---~odern, streamlined streetcars and buses wiILre-__ _place old equipment on Halsted Street, effective at12:01 a.m. Sunday, December 4, 1949. Streetcars willoperate between Waveland Avenue, on the north, andan off-street terminal at 79th Street. .

Service on the portion of the Halsted Street line •south of 79th Street, will be provided by modern motorbuses which will make transfer connections with thenew streetcars in the off-street terminal at 79th Street.

• Extensions of ServiceTwo route extensions are included in the new Halsted

Buses replacing Halsted streetcars on the south endof the line will operate on Halsted and on VincennesAvenue to Monterey Avenue, and then on 11lth Streetas far west as Pulaski Road, eliminating the transfernow required at Sacramento Avenue, the present ter-minal of the Halsted streetcar line.

The present South Halsted Street bus route, whichoperates from 127th Street to 87th Street, will be ex-tended northward to 79th Street, connecting directlywith streamlined Clark-Wentworth cars at 81st andHalsted, and with the modern Halsted streetcars inthe off-street terminal at 79th and Halsted.

• 16V2 Percent Increase in LocalTransit Units on Halsted Street

104 modern streetcars and 30 motor buses will re-place the 115 vehicles now operating on the HalstedStreet route. Rush hour headways between streetcarswill be about lY2 minutes, and between buses on thesouth end of the line, the intervals will be about 2~

't. minutes.

• 180,000 Riders Every Weekdayto Share the Benefits of ModernEquipment and Better Service

Every weekday approximately 106,000 riders starttheir local transit .trips on Halsted Street. An addi-tional 74,000 transfer to the route. Thus a total of180,000 riders each weekday will be benefited by thenew equipment and improved service on Halsted Street.

• 663 Miles of Surface RoutesEquipped with New Busesand Streetcars

With modern streetcars and motor buses in serviceon Halsted Street, CTA will have a total of 663 milesof its surface routes equipped with new vehicles. Sixroutes, including Halsted, are equipped with noise-proofed streetcars, forty-nine routes with motor busesand six routes with silent-operating trolley buses. Thenoise level on all of these routes has been substan-ti;.IlY ~educed-by -the~~w -rubbe-r-tiTed'""or rufiher..--insulated vehicles.

• 53 Percent of eTA -WeekdaySurface System Rides NowOriginate on Modern Vehicles

With Halsted Street added to the list of newlyequipped lines, more than half of each weekday's orig-inating rides-53 percent-will start in modern CTAequipment. This percentage, of course, will continueto increase as the CTA modernization program pro-gresses .
