On April 23rd and 24th, the ArtsCouncil of Mongolia, in collaborationwith the Ministry of Culture, Sports, andTourism, and the Intellectual PropertyOf ce of Mongolia (IPOM), with fundingfrom Rio Tinto, organized an IntellectualProperty Seminar. Four different sessionswere held for members of the library, lm,music, and ne arts communities and over 200 individuals participated.

Professor Kenneth Crews, Director of Columbia Universitys Copyright AdvisoryOf ce, led each session to consider theinternational scope of intellectual propertyand copyright issues. The sessions werefollowed by a presentation on Mongoliaslegal infrastructure by Ms. Myagmardorj,Director of the Copyright Of ce of IPOM.Each session involved a few select experts

from each eld of intellectual property todiscuss contemporary issues. The audience

participated in a n inte ractive question andanswer forum that truly demonstrated theimportance of this topic to Mongoliansociety.

This seminar represented an importantopportunity for many members of Mongolias thriving artistic and intellectualculture to learn about intellectual propertyand the legal bene ts and responsibilitiesof copyright. Perhaps one of the mostfundamental lessons that was repeatedduring the two-day seminar, was to

become used to uncertainty becauseinternational conventions, national laws, and legal verdicts are always shifting our interpretation of copyrights. Embracingcreativity is the goal of intellectual propertyrights that empowers both content creatorsand content consumers.
