Dear Neighbours,

Welcome to your January/February issue of My Moseley.

Happy New Year to you... and a happy new name for us! As this booklet has evolved into more of a community magazine than a directory I thought it high time we had a new name to match. So My Moseley it will be from now on. This name shows a pride in our local area at the same time as reflecting our warm, friendly and down to earth approach.

Hope you all like it; I would love to know what you think. Email, tweet or facebook me!

Riverford Organic's recipe of the monthJerusalem artichokes and mushrooms in a bag with goat’s cheese (serves 4)By Jane Baxter, Riverford Field Kitchen Taken from the Riverford Farm Cook Book

When in doubt, put it in a bag. These earthy flavours work so well together and look quite rustic when served in their parchment bags. As always with Jerusalem artichokes – and mushrooms – a drizzle of truffle oil would make a fabulous addition.

Ingredients:

• 4 large Jerusalem artichokes, scrubbed and cut into rounds 1cm thick

• juice of 1 lemon• 4 tbsp olive oil• 1 tsp thyme leaves• 200g mushrooms, sliced• 10g dried porcini mushrooms, soaked

in 400ml boiling water for 30 mins• 2 garlic cloves, chopped• 75g goat’s cheese, crumbled• 1 tbsp chopped chives• sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Method

Mix the artichokes with half the lemon juice, a tablespoon of oil and the thyme leaves, then set aside.

Sauté the fresh mushrooms quickly in 2 tbsp of the remaining oil until they are just tender. Season well and remove from the pan.

Drain the porcini, reserving the soaking water. Chop roughly and cook in the remaining tbsp of oil with the garlic for 2 mins. Add the reserved soaking liquor and simmer until reduced and quite syrupy. Add the fresh mushrooms and the remaining lemon juice and season to taste.

Spread out a large square of baking parchment. Tip the artichokes over one half of it, sprinkle the mushrooms on top and then fold over the parchment. Seal the 3 open sides by folding them over tightly, or simply use a stapler.

Place the parcel on a baking tray and bake in an oven preheated to 200°C/Gas Mark 6 for about 45 mins, until the artichokes are tender. Open the bag and sprinkle the contents with the crumbled goat’s cheese and chives.

Helping you cope with lossIn our first of the ‘meet the team at Tyndallwoods’ series we meet Clare Martin (formerly Sillery) Associate Solicitor who specialises in wills and probate, powers of attorney and trusts.

No one likes to mention the d word (death) but this is what Clare’s work is all about.

She helps people get their affairs in order to make life easier for their loved ones after they have gone and she helps people pick up the pieces for those left behind.

Clare gets an immense amount of satisfaction from working in this area. Having suffered bereavement herself she feels she can really empathise with her clients and help them through the toughest time of their lives.

When visiting a lawyer we all expect a level of professionalism and efficiency. Clare offers this and more. She takes time to listen and get to know her clients, even to the point of remembering their birthdays and the names of their dogs.

Much of Clare’s work comes through word of mouth because clients are so happy with how she has dealt with their affairs they tell their friends all about her.

Visiting a lawyer to deal with probate is essential, but making a will can often be the

kind of thing that is put on the back burner for some time. But there comes a time when making a will becomes more urgent, like when you start a family or a business.

People are often concerned that going to a solicitor will be vastly expensive but that is not the case. Clare offers a will writing service starting at £140 which is guaranteed to be robust and comprehensive helping families avoid conflict that inevitably arises when there is ambiguity in a badly drafted will, or no will at all.

For more information or to make an appointment you can call Clare on 0121 693 2222

Friday night, pizza night

Being a vegetarian is sometimes a bit limiting when it comes to pizza, but no more! Veggielicious is a new pizza parlour which serves only vegetarian food.

Located on Robin Hood Island, Stratford Rd on the left as you drive south, Veggielicious has a couple of tables inside but in essence it is a take-away. It also has forecourt parking out the front but offers free delivery for orders over £12 if you live within 3 miles.

Being a nearly vegetarian (I just eat chicken and fish and there is no word for people

like me yet) I was quite excited to be doing a cheating meat pizza review.

Veggielicious does have your usual vegetarian pizzas but it also has cheating chicken, cheating pepperoni, cheating king prawn and loads more. They have a fabulous range of flavours including piri piri, tandoori, pesto, chilli, BBQ and coriander so I had

Page 17: MM Jan/Feb 2013

17

the rare experience of finding it difficult to choose what to have. Usually I can discount 80% of the menu before I start choosing because of the meaty ingredients.

As well as pizza, Veggielicious offers the side dishes you would expect like garlic bread, salad and chips but also has yummy dishes like spicy hummus with pitta strips, stuffed jalepenos with cream cheese and onion bhajis. And they have some unusual paninis, wraps and sandwiches if it’s lunch you’re after. The menu also includes delicious sounding desserts, hot drinks and soft drinks.

I timed my review for Friday night so that all the family could enjoy it together. We shared the Cheating Pepperoni Pizza, Cheating Meatfeast Pizza and the Tandoori Paneer Pizza with some garlic bread and salad.

It took all my self control not to start eating them in the car on the way home they smelled so good. The pizzas were deep crust, with the dough cooked perfectly; they had a generous amount of cheese and the cheating meat was really tasty. The whole lot was gone in minutes!

Veggielicious premises are clean, smart and you can see them cooking your food which is always reassuring. The staff are polite and the service is fast.

Veggielicious has a whole load of special offers on at the moment. You can either get ‘buy one get one half price’ on the large pizza or claim a 10% discount on pizza orders exceeding £12 when collecting by quoting code: MDDEC. They can cater for children’s parties and have lunch time meal deals and family meal deals.

So if you fancy a pizza this Friday, check them out!

New bells ring in the New YearSt Mary’s old steel bells were nominated as the ‘worst bells in Britain’ on a recent Radio 4 broadcast. Now Moseley has a new ring of 10 bell metal bells that sound terrific.

The steel bells were installed in 1874, but for most of the 120 years that followed, they remained silent, until a team of ringers got them back into working order in 1991. This was only meant to be a temporary measure but in 2008 the heaviest bell (the tenor) fell into the floor of the bell chamber and was thought to be dangerous.

So in April 2009 a team was put together to raise £140,000 for a new ring of

bells. This team was led by Sharon Wall and following nearly three years of fund raising, the steel bells were removed and placed in storage ready to be shipped to the Swan Tower museum in Perth, Australia, to form a public display at the entrance of the museum.

Taylor’s Bell Foundry in Loughborough were commissioned to cast 7 new bells to fit the profile of three high quality Gillett & Johnston Bells.

Page 21: MM Jan/Feb 2013

21

The fund raising success was down to the huge support from local people and businesses. Reuben Colley Fine Arts donated two paintings for a promises auction which took place in 2011 and was the catalyst for a string of donations that led to the instruction for Taylor’s to start work.

The old steel bells were rung for the last time on 15 January 2012 and then removed. The new bells were cast in April and then transported to the Church for a service of Dedication in September given by the Very Reverend Catherine Ogle.

The bells and frame are now in place and ringing has begun again. St Mary’s has already had visitors from Quebec City in Canada, Aachen in Germany and Newcastle upon Tyne in the UK, to see the new bells and ring with the now expanding band of ringers who practice at St Mary’s on Monday evenings between 7.30 and 9.00pm.

The bells can also be heard on Sunday mornings from 9.30am, when they are rung for the service at 10.00am, led by the Tower Captain, Ian Bryan.

They were rung for the switching on of the Christmas lights in Moseley and will no doubt be rung for many other special occasions in the future. Listen out for them and see what you think!

Two Carls for the price of one

One of the great local fundraising successes here in Birmingham is TLC Lottery which last year celebrated the 15th Anniversary of its first draw.

The Lottery is a joint fundraising venture between Three Local Charities (TLC) – Acorns Children’s Hospice, Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice and Focus Birmingham.

Lottery Manager Carl Bayliss was recently a guest on Carl Chinn’s BBC WM 95.6 programme.

In 2012, TLC raised over £120,000 for each of the three charities and Carl Chinn asked “what difference has this made for the charities?”

Carl Bayliss explained that the money raised was enough to provide 4,500 hours of hospice care at Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice, all the food and catering staff at Acorns plus transport

and day care for 60 visually impaired people at Focus Birmingham.

Finally Carl Chinn asked Carl Bayliss “why should people support TLC?”

Carl Bayliss responded by saying “it’s just £1 a week, you have a chance to win £1,000 but win or lose you know that the money is going to three great good causes making a real difference to people in our community”

Following on from the programme, TLC have had many telephone and email enquiries which just shows the power of local radio in raising awareness of good causes.

Spiritual inspired exhibition

Don’t miss the chance to put some colour into your life at the darkest time of the year.

Moseley Exchange is hosting a solo exhibition of new work by D’Arrelle Harrison. This is the second solo show of the artist’s work in Birmingham. The exhibition will open with a public reception on Tuesday 8 January, from 7 to 9 pm. And will remain at Moseley Exchange until 8 March.

D’Arrelle has a really strong relationship with the natural and spiritual world. His new series of work has taken his knowledge of the concept of

‘ethereal’ and expanded it into candy coloured paintings that explore transformation and perception.

D’Arrelle has had exhibitions in the UK and USA. Originally from Birmingham he has a long career on both sides of the Atlantic. He is also exhibiting at MAC, Pallant house Gallery, The mall Gallery, The alchemy Gallery, Talisman, Zimmer Steward Gallery and the Gallery of Cork St.

A sneaky peek upstairs at Winterbourne

Fans of Winterbourne House and Garden at the University of Birmingham will soon have even more to enjoy during their visit, with a whole new floor of Edwardian exhibition rooms to explore.

The new set of rooms complement those on the ground floor, revealing more about the lives of the family who lived there: a nursery with beautiful turn of the century toys and information about the Nettlefold children, an Edwardian teenage bedroom (not an iPod in sight!) and a comparatively sparse bedroom belonging to the household’s governess.

Whilst photos of the rooms themselves are strictly forbidden until the big reveal at the end of January, you can see some close up views as a taster.

Using source photographs from a 1911 photoshoot in Country Life magazine, the long corridor on the 1st floor has been returned to its homely feel with soft furnishings and artwork on the walls.

There is also a room dedicated to the collection of Magic Lanterns at Winterbourne, with more information for visitors about this Victorian form of entertainment.

Staff at Winterbourne have had a relatively short period of time to complete the project which has included

Page 35: MM Jan/Feb 2013

35

reinstating period features such as fireplaces, flooring and decorations. Up until the end of November, rooms were still being used for conferences and meetings which was a real challenge for the hospitality team. Each day a new feature has ‘appeared’ whether it’s a piece of furniture or a wallpapered wall. It has been a real labour of love!

Anna Williams, Marketing Manager at Winterbourne explained how the project has been undertaken through kind donations and existing budgets: ‘we felt that this stage in our development was really important, especially as so many visitors have asked about seeing the upstairs of the house, and there was never

going to be an ideal time or easy way of doing the work. We have an incredibly hard-working team and all this has been achieved alongside our day to day jobs. We can’t wait to see visitor’s faces when they see the rooms for the first time!’

Winterbourne will be open 7 days a week from Monday 28 January and admission is charged at £5 for adults and £4 for concessions. Alongside the exhibition rooms, there is a 7 acre arts and crafts garden, gift shop, tea room and gallery. The second floor continues to offer excellent meeting room space for team away days, board meetings and presentations.
