In May 2002, Universal Instruments opened a new research andtraining center — the Technology Excellence Center — inSuzhou, Jiangsu Province, China. This world-class center is a

significant investment for Universal Instruments, and forms a keypart of the company’s strategic growth plans for China and Asia.

The center will be used to provide hands-on process andmanufacturing training support for existing and potentialcustomers, and to demonstrate Universal’s unique process andproductivity solutions, as well as the company’s renownedproduction and semiconductor assembly equipment solutions.

To mark the opening of this new world-class facility, Universal helda grand opening celebration and ribbon-cutting ceremony May 16.This event — attended by members of the electronics industry press,customers, and local dignitaries — included a press conference,facility tour, luncheon, opening ceremony, and ribbon cutting.

During the opening ceremony, Universal’s KH Ong,China Country Manager, explained how critical theTechnology Excellence Center is to Universal’s growthin Asia. He said, “I think it’s an indication of howsuccessful Universal has been in China, that it is lessthen 10 years since we first started to manufactureproducts in China and now we are constructing a newfactory in Shenzhen and celebrating the opening of theTechnology Center here in Suzhou. This new, US$1million, 6,000 square foot Technology Excellence Centeris a world-class laboratory and applications engineering

facility that will provide hands-on process and manufacturing training support forour existing and potential customers in China.”

According to Ong, “The Center will be used to demonstrate our unique process andproductivity solutions, as well as our renowned production and semiconductorassembly equipment solutions. Located in this facility are our latest advanced assemblymachines, including the newest 4797 HSP chipshooter and GSM® Platform FlexJet®

system, as well as DEK printers, Vitronics reflow ovens, and GSMxs™ Platform advancedsemiconductor assembly machines. At the heart of the line is our Dimensions™Manufacturing Automation software, and we plan to install additional reliability andfactory automation equipment in the near future.”

Universal President Ian McEvoy was also on-hand at thegrand opening celebration (shown cutting the ribbon inphoto above). During his brief remarks, McEvoy said, “Thisis a very special day for Universal, and I am proud that weare in such a strong position in the China market and areable to open this new, world-class facility.”

The following day, customers were invited to a half-dayseminar where senior managers from UniversalInstruments and some of its business partner companiesoffered presentations. Participating were representativesfrom the Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (formerly the GINTIC), DEKPrinting Machines, Sanyo High Technology, and Vitronics Soltec Asia. This eventconcluded with equipment demonstrations

Equipment available at the Technology Excellence Center includes a DEK 4265 InfinityScreen Printer, 4797A High-Speed Placement System, GSM2™ Platform, Platform TrayFeeder, Vitronics Soltec XPM820 Reflow Oven, GSMxs Platform with Wafer Handler,and the Dimensions Manufacturing Automation Software suite.

Newest Version of UPS+ Software

Starting with June 2002 shipments, Generation 8 through

hole insertion machines will be shipping with new features

and improvements as a result of a new block release. There

is no machine price increase with the addition and release

of these new features and improvements.

The highlights for this block release include a new version

of IM UPS software (3.1.0); 1° insertion capability on the

Radial 8XT; a new clinch offering (standard clinch) for the

Radial 8XT; and network communications capability for all

Series 8 machines.

Machine improvements and new features are the result of

customer and internal feedback that gets scheduled for a

block release. The frequency of a block release for our

through hole machines is typically every 6 to 12 months.

Through these block releases customers get easier to

operate, faster, and more reliable machines.

In August 2002, Universal Instruments will release the latest

version of Universal Platform Software, UPS+ 2.0. This software

is designed to run on the GSM, GSMx and GSMxs Platforms.

Universal’s UPS+ software increases GSM Platform flexibility

while making the machine easier to use.

UPS+ is the first software release for the GSM Platform family

designed to run on Microsoft’s® Windows® 2000 — the world’s

most recognized and reliable operating system. Windows 2000

offers a simple, robust and widely supported network

connection. UPS+ incorporates state-of-the-art programming,

operating, and diagnostic tools to address shifts in volume and

accuracy requirements, allowing you to better compete in a

rapidly changing assembly arena. An icon-driven user interface

offers easy access to common production tasks. Customizable

interface screens provide across-the-line commonality.

Language support for Chinese (Simplified and Traditional) will

be supported in the initial release. Auto Pick Coordinate Update

with Nozzle Tip Calibration automatically adjusts the pick point

for improved pick performance.

Products and databases are saved in a single file format for

simple copy, export and backup. Component ID name strings

are expanded to 32 characters. Easy-to-use diagnostic software

enables advanced machine service and troubleshooting. A faster

calibration process requires less user intervention. Advanced

system security requires each user to log in.

Asia SMT Lab

Universal Instruments and the Singapore Institute of

Manufacturing Technology (SIMT), formerly known

as Gintic Institute of Manufacturing Technology, will

set up the Universal Instruments Asia Surface Mount

Technology Laboratory (SMT Lab) in Singapore. This initiative,

the first outside the United States for Universal Instruments,

will introduce Universal’s process support capabilities to Asia

and also establish Singapore as a training base for its

customers, engineers and technicians in the region’s

electronics industry.

The Asia SMT Lab is an extension of the Universal laboratory

in Binghamton and equips Universal’s Asia operations with

the capability to offer customers total line solutions and

systems, as well as provide them with a full applications and

process support structure.

“We are excited to team up with a global company like

Universal Instruments and look forward to the mutual

exchange of manufacturing technology and expertise,” said

Dr. Lim Khiang Wee, Director of SIMT. “We are confident that

this collaboration will contribute to develop Singapore as a

manpower development and technology hub for the

electronics industry in Asia.”

SIMT to establish our Asia SMT Lab in Singapore.

Manufacturing is still a critical focus in Asia, and Singapore

serves as an excellent training and technology exchange hub

for many world-class manufacturing facilities,” said KH Ong,

initiative is an extension of Universal’s strategy to be closer

to our customers and contribute to their growth by helping

them build their overall process yield improvement capability

and develop their skills.”

Universal presented its latest solutions and also shared insights on various technologydevelopments at the SEMICON Singapore event held at the Suntec Singapore InternationalConvention and Exhibition Center.

Solutions showcased included new options on Universal’s GSMxs Platform and the new Look-Before-Pick software offering precise “find” functionality. Universal also demonstrated newwafer feeder options including the integrated Wafer Feeder with on-line wafer processing andshuttle delivery of die for gang picking.

The Technology Seminar hosted by Universal in conjunction with SEMICON Singapore was verywell received with the audience hearing and discussing latest insights on developments in“Optoelectronics”, “Lead-Free Process” and “Wafer Bumping”.

The Japan office had been strategically relocated to the center

of downtown Tokyo to allow easy and quick access to customers,

correspondingly allowing for a faster response time to

customers’ support calls.

The office occupies two floors and is better equipped to support

your businesses. Some of the facilities include a show room, a

conference room and a parts stock room. We are confident that

this move will help cater to the growing customer base in Japan.

Comparative Analysis

Third-Party Parts

Parts are reverse engineered by measuring dimensionsfrom a Universal part and then transferring informationto a drawing. Using this process, tolerances can’t bedetermined and parts can’t achieve the same level ofcontrol as the original design.

Material grade is presumed. Steel is most often selectedfor ease of manufacturability, without regard to wearcharacteristics.

Surface f inishes don’t conform to Universalspecifications; this has been found to affect speed andfunctionality.

Without access to Universal’s design library, there is nomeans to ensure all aspects of compatibility andinterchangeability have been incorporated.

Third-party manufacturers have no knowledge of partupgrades, and can’t make comparable improvements.

Nonstandard or uncontrolled manufacturing methodsadd variability to a part’s overall performance.

When measurements are not kept within exacttolerances, problems can develop in related assemblies,causing downtime and additional maintenance costs.
