  • Beloved Friends,

Laudetur Iesus Christus. It is withgreat joy that I write this letter to youthat comes into your homes inspiredwith the missionary enthusiasmenkindled in all of us by theWorld YouthDay that was celebrated in Madrid lastAugust with the slogan, Planted andbuilt up in Jesus Christ, firm in thefaith.

The message launched by our HolyFather to all our youth and to all of theChurch has implanted in my missionaryheart two impulses that have inspiredme that much more in our everydayservice to the most poor.

First of all, our Holy Fatherreminded us more than once that theheart of the young is constantly and onlylooking for heroic answers. They arelooking for answers that they can onlyfind to full satisfaction when theydiscover that the secret of their ownexistence is to give back their talents toeveryone else. We have also experiencedthis restlessness of heart in the youth ofour missions in the Andes mountainrange; in the passage of these years therehave been many young people that havecome almost by chance to help thepoor and have discovered that, preciselyin the service to the most poor, our Lordhas revealed the secret of full personalfulfillment and, as a result, authentichappiness.

One of the gifts that the Holy Spirithas given the Church in these lastdecades is that of extending this gift ofputting oneself at the service of the poorto also include entire families, autheticdomestic churches: a clear example ofthis is our Fraternity of the youngmissionary families.

It is a missionary Nomadelfia(Nomadelfia is a fraternity of Catholicfamilies founded in Italy by Fr ZenoSaltini in 1952) made up of variousmarried couples hailing from diversenations (Columbia, the United States ofAmerica, France, Italy, Mexico, Peru andVenezuela), with varied specialties andlevels of formal education (architects, engineers, builders, professors, bankemployees, laborers, etc.), families thatwith their children have left theirhomelands, their jobs and their comfortsof modern life, to put themselves to theservice of the most poor and theirevangelization. This fraternity is madeup of young, married couples that wantto radically live the Gospel in missionterritory,

    AmissionaryNomadelfia in the

    heart of thePeruvian Andes

    3

  • following the rule of Imitating Christ, the spiritual compass of the MissionaryServants of the Poor of the ThirdWorld.

What characterizes thisNomadelfia isnt only the love thatreigns among the missionary families, but also the fact that their members liveas true brothers and sisters. Theyharmonize the different aspects of thedistinct cultures from which they come, giving importance to the evangelizationand the service to the poor. They arebeing guided and fortified by the dailyEucharistic Adoration, realized in theVilla Nazaret chapel, as it has beenbaptized by this community ofmissionary families.

Family privacy is guaranteed by thefact that each family lives in anindependent house, each one of thembeing, onto themselves, a smallcommunity, a domestic Church. The missionary husbands, on the one

hand, dedicate themselves not only toevangelization, but also to the educationof the poor. The young male childrenreceived in the City of Boys, some twokilometers from Villa Nazaret aretaught by them. The missionary wives,on the other hand, dedicate themselvesto the education of the poor; young girlsfrom the city of Cuzco and itssurrounding neighbourhoods, receivedin our Santa Mara Goretti school, nearly 350 in all.

It is amazing to see that, while inEurope the talk is about an increasingwave of divorces, separations andcouples living together, the MissionaryServants of the Poor of the Third Worldthat work in Peru are not only receivingyoung people from different nations butthey are also receiving requests fromyoung married couples wishing to jointhe missionary Nomadelfiacommunity.

  • 5Msgr. Michele Pennisi in Cusibamba, the village in the Andes where theMissionary Sisters SPTWmaintain a permanent mission.

The second great impulseimpressed upon me by the message ofthe Holy Father for World Youth Daywas to make us remember that the truemissionary is he or she who, rooted inChrist, makes themselves the bearer ofChrist, the only authentic good and onlytrue wealth that anyone has. It dealswith the principle that should alwaysguide all of our Apostle works and thatthe Holy Father himself has alreadypresented before, The more ardent thelove for the Eucharist in the hearts ofthe Christian people, the more clearlywill they recognize the goal of allmission: to bring Christ to others. Notjust a theory or away of life inspired byChrist, but the gift of his very person.Anyonewho has not shared the truth oflove with his brothers and sisters hasnot yet given enough.

    (Benedict XVI. Sacramentum caritatis,86)

We should never tire of bringingChrist to the poor.Whatever missionaryinitiative of ours that does not have thisgoal will be a grave betrayal in respectto our vocation, in respect to the Churchand in respect to the poor; a betrayalthat we will be held accountable for.

So, it is even more wonderful tothink that our Missionary Sisters upthere in the villages of the high Andes, are daily opening the doors of theirsmall churches built from "adobes"(handmade bricks of clay and strawmud) during the Adoration of the dailyEucharist, so that the poor can meetwith Christ. It is equally marvelous toknow that our priests every Sunday

  • climb the Andes on muddy roads, totake all the way to the very highestaltitudes the Body, the Blood, the Souland the Divinity of Jesus Christ!

That is why, to all of us, theMissionary Servants of the Poor of theThird World, and all those called to liveamong the Indians of the Andes as wellas those called to a humble and silentministry in the western world, I say:Courage!

And in a special way I say to thoseof you that follow from far away, thanksto this, our Newsletter, the marvelousthings that the Lord realizes among thepoor: Do not let the missionary fire thatis in your heart go out! On the contrary, nurturing your Eucharistic life every

day, do not tire of organizing SupportGroups and of collaborating with yourparishes in the various types of servicesfor charity, and trying to organizemissionary encounters.

And to you, the young people, taking up again the cry of the latestPopes, I say: Do not be afraid todiscover that until we have giveneverything we have to give, we havegiven too little!

  • 8There is no doubt that the firstcondition, for everyone who seriouslywants to walk toward holiness, is, as JohnPaul II reminded us, the perfection ofcharity (Christifideles Laici, 16). Theuniversal vocation of all men, consists inthe daily struggle against lukewarmness.

Lukewarmness is typical of those who tryto undertake the road to saintliness, towards the intimate union with God,only halfway, without generosity, withlittle effort, almost without any penance, even though knowing that only in Him ismankinds true happiness

In the Sacred Scripture, we findseveral condemnations of this style oflife: A curse on him who is lax in doing

the Lord's work (Jer. 48, 10). I knowthy works, that thou art neither cold norhot: I would thou wert cold or hot. Sothen because thou art lukewarm, andneither cold nor hot, I will spew thee outof my mouth. (Rev. 3, 15-16 (KJV))

Saint Josemaria Escriv (Camino,331) shows us some symptoms of thisevil. It deals with a collection, probablynot exhaustive, but useful for anexamination of conscience about thisaspect of our life. Saint Escriv says:

    You are lukewarm:- if you carry out lazily and reluctantlythose things that have to do with ourLord;

48Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which isin heaven is perfect. (Matt 5, 48)

FIGHT AGAINST LUKEWARMNESS (First part)Fr. Piefilippo Giovanetti, M.S.P. (Italian)

  • 9- if deliberately or 'shrewdly' you lookfor some way of cutting down yourduties;

    - if you think only of yourself and ofyour comfort;

    - if your conversations are idle andvain;

    - if you do not abhor venial sin;- if you act from human motives.

A symptom of this evil consists innot taking venial sins seriously. It is alack of zealconscious and willing, founded upon erroneous ideastoward the spiritual: that you shouldnot be meticulous; that God is mercifuland that for that reason he does notpay a lot of attention to little things;that others also do the same; and othersimilar excuses.

It is clear that the root of this lackof enthusiasm does not reside in venialsins, but in coming to peace with ourlittle defects, as can be distractions inprayer, useless words, the desire toappear good in front of others,

gossiping (to talk about defects inothers), resentment expressed withwords, etc. These sins can be avoidedwith the help of God, help that weshould ask for in prayer.

On the contrary, lukewarmnessdraws us to them and thus prevents usfrom arriving at perfection, becausevenial sin diminishes the fervour ofcharity, augments difficulties inpractising the virtues that every timebecome more difficult andpredisposes one to mortal sin, that willcome if one does not react swiftly.

And how can we react to thesesins, but above all against this lack ofenthusiasm that predisposes us tothem? In the first place, we shouldseek sincere contrition, which does notlead us to seek conformity with thesesins and weaknesses. To makecontrition from the sins committed, itis very useful to put ourselves in thepresence of God, at the foot of thecross. If we want to measure the evil of

Fr. Pierfilippo, Priest M.S.P., going to the encounter with poor peoplefrom the Andes in Peru.

our sins, we need a point of reference, and for that there is nothing better thanto attach ourselves to the love of Christ, nail our gaze upon the Crucified, themaximum expression of this love. In anyother way we will not give fair weight toour sins and the tendency to justifythem will easily win out.

Moreover, a useful instrument inthis struggle is the recourse ofmortification. We need to distinguish, inthe first place, between passive andactive mortification.

The first ones, which we have calledpassive, consist of all those annoyancesthat we findagainst which wecollidethroughout the day, at workand in living with others (defects ofpeople with which we must coexist, inconveniences at work, misunderstandings in the family, etc.).To accept these daily mortifications itwould be very useful to remember often, possibly every morning, that the day webegin will be also characterized by the

cross, which could be an especiallyheavy cross, one that demands us themost to carry.

Then, there are those that we callactive mortifications, those that we lookfor. Among these, you need todistinguish between interiormortifications (for example, to distanceyour thoughts and fantasies or harmfulmemories) and exterior ones (not lookat things that can hurt us, refrain fromuseless conversations, rumors, etc.).Many times it has to deal with giving upcomforts, fun . . . . These are things andpleasures that by themselves may not bebad, moreover they could be totallypermissable, but theyre not helpful forprogress in our spiritual life.

If we have a tendency to attachourselves to them, we need to rememberwhat Saint John of the Cross said, Hewho seeks God wishing to carry on withhis pleasures, looks for Him by nightand thus will not find Him (SpiritualCanticle 3.3)

The devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is veryold in the Church, however, it was Saint Margaret Mary

de Alacoque (1647-1690) who made it popular.Jesus appeared to her during the octave of the

festival of Corpus Christi and said to her, Behold this,my Heart, that despite being consumed in ardent love forman, did not receive from the Christians anything otherthan sacrilege, scorn, indifference and ingratitude, although in the same Sacrament of My love. But whatpierces My Heart most heartbreakingly is that I receivedthese insults from people especially consecrated to My

service. Our Lord made great promises to those that demonstratetheir love and make atonement for their own and otherssins, I promise, the all-powerful love of My Heart willgrant to all those who receive communion on the firstFriday of nine consecutive months the grace of final

repentance; they shall not die under My displeasure, norwithout receiving the Sacraments; My heart shall be their

assured refuge at the last hour.To take advantage of these promises, we must: Receive continuously Holy Communion the firstFridays of nine consecutive months.

Have the intention of honoring the Sacred Heart ofJesus and of obtaining final repentance.

Offer every Holy Communion as an act of atonementof offenses committed against the Holy Sacrament ofthe altar (the Eucharist).

We are an Italian family originally fromthe Northern Italy that has however inthe past few years lived in Assisi. Ournames are Vincenzo and Roberta, andour children are Nicola, Lorenzo, Anna,Mattia and Raffaelethe last arrival, born in Peru.

It seems incredible to us that we havealready spent two years in Peru. But letus go back in time to remember how wefirst came to know of the Movement.

We had been in Assisi for a few monthswhen one day we went to the sanctuaryof Our Lady of the Baths in the provinceof Perusa. There we found theMissionaryServants of the Poor of the Third Worldnewsletter. We took it home and, readingit, felt right away the desire to adopt at adistance. We have had difficult momentseconomically, but the Lord has alwaysspurred us to go on, to sacrifice so that wecould help others, above all the mostneedy.

In the seven years that we lived in Assisi, the Lord led us to discover the importanceof daily Mass with our children, ofpersonal prayer and family prayer, of theeveryday Eucharistic Adoration . . . . All of

this, thanks also to the help of the radiostation Radio Maria and to thisnewsletter of the Missionary Servants ofthe Poor of the TW.

It was important for us not to give in tothe seductions of the world when we wereoffered, for example, jobs that from acertain perspective were gratifying, butthat took us away from our family anddestroyed it. We had committed thiserror in the past. Now, it was our turn tohave more confidence in the Providenceof God.

So we have always accepted simple andhumble jobs that allowed us to be closerto our family and to be able to pray morein family.

Our question was always the same,What do You want us to do for You,Lord?

During the last year in Assisi, you couldsay that we were fine: Vincenzo workedin agro-tourism, and for him it wassatisfying to be able to occupy himself inthe maintenance of the gardens, alsobecause of the fact that he liked thecontact with nature.

    TESTIMONYOF THEMATTERAFAMILY

  • We only had a small preoccupation:where to register our oldest childwho hadto start middle school. We askedourselves which school would havehelped us to continue cultivating in himChristian values.

This problem preoccupied us a lot, to thepoint that we decided to make a novenato Saint Jon Bosco.

In that same year, during Lent season,we wrote a letter to Father GiovanniSalerno, founder of the MissionaryServants of the Poor of the TW, makingour feelings known to him and our wishto serve the poor, and asking how wecould do that with all of our personal andfamily difficulties, the language, etc. Justthe idea of the six of us boarding a planeterrified us . . . .

Afterwards, finally, Father Giovannivisited us and, leaving us to reflect with

total liberty and above all prayer, told usthat the Lord was calling us to take ahuge step, almost in total darkness, and he also told us these words, If youare looking for God, you will find him inour homes; and if you are looking for agood and wholesome school for yourchildren, you will find it over there. This phrase accompanied us during theperiod of our decision; and finally, aftersome six months, we headed out: on the25th of October, 2009, we stepped downin Peru as a missionary family.

Of course, we did not come to Peru astourists, but to serve God. The first yearwas not easy for various reasons:physical difficulties caused by thealtitude (3,400 metersover 11,000feetabove sea levelthe body needs toadapt and this takes time . . .), the newcustoms, the language, the actual contactwith the children (generally dirty andalways with runny noses . . .

without a doubt it isnt like when yousimply see them in a newsletter . . . yourflesh rebels a little). But, with the grace ofGod, you can confront everything, and itbecomes even more lighthearted andgratifying.

Coming here we have discovered that theLord called us not only to be with themost poor but to also share above all ourpath with the other missionary familiescoming from diverse places in the worldfamilies from Peru, Columbia,Mexico, theUnited States, Venezuela and France.

Only through them, thanks to their love, have we been able to go on in this path. Now that we are in Villa Nazaret, wherepresently 12 missionary families reside, our option becomes even moreinteresting; families from around thewhole world share the same ideal: Lookfor God in the poor.Without a doubt it will not be easy: so

many families, so many ways of thinking, etc. But, in the Villa Nazaret centre, wehave the most important thinga chapelwith the Eucharist and the Most HolyVirgin Mary that accompanies us,sustains us and inspires us to stay on thepath.

We givemany thanks to all the lay people, the numerous cloister monks and nunsthat in Italy and other nations of theworld are praying for us, our children andour vocation.May the VirginMary rewardyou with all numberless blessings.

    Fr. Pierfilippo Giovanetti, M.S.P.(Italian)

Saint Luis Gonzaga was born onMarch 9, 1568, in Castiglione delleStiviere, Italy, to an important family ofSpanish origin. From a young age, hedemonstrated a strong tendency towardstudy, prayer (he used to separatehimself from others to pray morepeacefully, just as, latterly, Saint Thereseof Lisieux would do) and works of charityfor the poor. After 1577, he spent twoyears in Florence, and it was there hisdesire to regularly confess increased. Hereceived his First Communion on July22, 1580, at the hands of Saint CarlosBorromeo, archbishop of Milan, withwhom he had a long conversation thatmarked his life.

He cultivated the spirit ofmortification, as much as in looks as indress, to the extent that he provoked theanger of his father, Ferrante, for whomthe behaviour of his first-born was adisgrace for the Gonzaga name. Thecompany of Jesus was a new religiousfamily at this time, which did not havemuch prestige. Hence when he told hisfather that not only did he intend tobecome a member of an order, but thisorder; the clash between father and sonescalated. The act of choosing preciselythe Companymanifested the young Luisdecision of escaping from all mundaneambition and all privilege connected tohigh ecclesiastical offices. They weredifficult times, but the tenacity andresolve of the youth allowed him tosucceed. Little by little and with greateffort, he overcameall paternal resistance.

Once he had left his fathers house,Luis found himself in the Roman Schoolof the Company when, between the endof 1590 and the beginning of 1591, in theCapital a plague broke out that caused60,000 deaths in the month of February1591 alone. Under these circumstances, the young Gonzaga found theopportunity to express his spirit ofcharity dedicating himself to the serviceof the sick in all of the hospitals of thecity, especially in Consolation Hospital.

On account of this, he met his deathwhile still very young, on June 21, 1591,at the age of 23.

Saint Luis Gonzaga, Patron Saint ofyouth, is the Patron of one of our groupsof boarding children in the City of Boysand, especially, of our Minor Seminary. We all hopeand for this we praythatunder the protection of this Jesuit Saint,a model of innocence and penance, theseyoung people can continue to persevereand mature that much more in theirvocation, to become one day holyMissionary Servants of the Poor of theThird World.

There, for the first time, Davidmet his mother, his grandparents andsome uncles and aunts and nephews andnieces, after 17 years of separation, without having heard anything fromthem. David is one of these boys from ourcenters that have known how to takegood advantage of all of the opportunitiesthat God has offered through theMovement: material sustenance, ahealthy human environment, school, human and religious education, professional development. As the yearshave gone by, our boarding boys learn tolive with an attitude of gratitude towardyou, our benefactors, because they knowthat everything that passes through ourhands is the fruit of many sacrifices ofpeople that truly love the poor.

Every year the Movement lives throughthese farewells, like that of DavidSalomon, as a great moment of grace, full of reverent gratitude toward God,Father of the poor, and conscious of itsgreat educational responsibility for thehundreds of children, boys and girls thatthe Lord brings to His homes withoutany publicity. With these fewwords we want to echo this reality, thatdoesnt cease to surprise ourMissionaries as well, and that leads us tohave confidence in God with humility, and to be always thankful to all of you, inthe name of the poor, in the name, forexample, of Francisco Javier: On March8 of this year, the Cuzco police call ourSister Missionaries telling them, Wehave found in the street, abandoned in ashopping bag, a child that was born

about a month ago with cleft lip . . . Canyou pick him up? How could wepossibly not accept him? But, with whatinspiration and generosity have we beenable to accept him? With yourinspiration and generosity! Also in thename of Francisco Javier . . .

    From The World

In a message sent to the General Director of the Food and Agriculture Organizationof the United Nations (FAO), Jacques Diouf, on the occasion of the World Day ofNourishment 2010, our Holy Father Benedict XVI points out that the theme chosenfor this yearUnited against hungerreminds everyone that they have to realize acommitment to give the agricultural sector adequate importance. It is necessary thateveryone from individuals to the organizations of civil society, states andinternational institutions give priority to one of themost urgent goals for the humanfamily: freedom from hunger, writes the Pope who remarks that this does not onlysignify enough food is available, but also that everyone has daily access to it.

The efforts to reach this objective will help to build the unity of the human familythroughout the world, continues the Pope, expressing later his satisfaction for therecent decision of the international community to protect the right to water.Essential for human nutrition, for rural activities and the conservation of nature. If the international community is to be truly united against hunger, then povertyshould be overcome through authentic human development, based on the idea ofthe person as a unity of body, soul and spirit. Today, though, there is a tendency tolimit the vision of development to one that satisfies the material needs of the person, especially through access to technology. (. . .) authentic development (. . .) must alsoembrace higher values of fraternity, solidarity and the common good. The HolyFather exhorts us to keep in mind a model of development based upon fraternity, inspired in solidarity and directed toward the common good, that will be able toproportion corrections to the present global crisis. He points out that Developedcountries have to be aware that the worlds growing needs require consistent levelsof aid from them. They cannot simply remain closed towards others: such anattitude would not help to resolve the crisis.

Finally, in his Message, Benedict XVI reminds us that, In order to eliminatehunger and malnutrition, obstacles of self-interest must be overcome so as to makeroom for a fruitful gratuitousness, manifested in international cooperation as anexpression of genuine fraternity. This does not obviate the need for justice, though, and it is important that existing rules be respected and implemented (. . .)Individuals, peoples and countries must be allowed to shape their own development, taking advantage of external assistance in accordance with priorities and conceptsrooted in their traditional techniques, in their culture, in their religious patrimonyand in the wisdom passed on from generation to generation within the family.

    Valeria from Italy

Dear children, boys, girls and adolescents from the San Tarcisio choir:I am the Mother Superior of a monastery that follows you with prayer and that ashort time ago received a visit from your dear founder Father Salerno. He gaveme a CD with your songs entitled Salve Mater Misericordiae.I feel the need to write to tell you that you sing with the heart of God.Your chants, but above all your way of singing, give true peace of heart.Thank you my dear singers!I feel that love reins in you, and your singing transmits this. From poverty youhave become rich, because it is Love that reins in you.The Lord is great, eternal is His compassion. With Him I bless you

From the silence of the monastery.

Dear Father Salerno,We received your very pleasant letter with great joy and we thank you becauseyou always make us feel a fatherly participation in your missionary work, sharingwith us so many beautiful things the Lord does in favor of the poor, the favoritechildren of His Heart. We have also followed with prayer the inauguration and progress of themissionary Nomadelfia, confident that the Villa Nazaret will be a great centreradiating divine love that asks for our collaboration (you in the front line, us inthe rearguard) to spread and carry to the entire world the news of salvation. And, while we ask for His blessing, we assure you our constant intercessionbefore the Tabernacle.

From the silence of a monastery

My Dear and Reverend Father Giovanni,Having returned to the monastery, I want to thank you for your invitation tospend a week with you in Cusco. The devotion of your Sisters and the simplicityof the children affected me profoundly. I will conserve in my heart manytouching memories. But it has been above all the visit to the village Cusibamba that has impressedme. There I left my hearta little Christian stole it. I was able to begin to see allthe good that can be done if one puts their mind to it. But, as I have already saidduring the Mass in the Santa Teresa church in Cusco, it is remaining faithful tothe cloister and to prayer that will be more useful to the Movement and to thechildren, and, therefore, also to Christ.I assure you my fraternal prayer for this work of God, for which you have beenthe chosen instrument.
