Front Royal UMC is joyful to announce the addition of a new full-time Minister of Music and Worship Arts. David Chavez is a graduate of the Pennsylvania State University with a Masters degree in Music Composition. He comes to Front Royal with a desire to bring together his:

Calling to honor God and spread the message of Jesus through music

Love of creatively integrating a variety of arts (musical, visual, movement, dramatic, literary, etc.) in a variety of styles into worship, ministry and mission

Leadership experience over volunteers and professionals ranging from children and youth through young adults and older adults

Ability to work across organizational divisions, forge effective working relationships even in difficult circumstances, and realize big-picture vision in practical reality

Experience starting ministry initiatives from scratch and raising the level of existing ministries

Rich variety of practical experience playing and leading contem-porary and traditional worship music, popular music, and classical music

Knowledge of contemporary songwriting, arranging and tran-scription, as well as classically- trained composition

Strong understanding of and leadership experience in audio and video technology

EBS FUN FEST On Saturday, October 8th,EBS will again host the Kid's Fun Fest on the grounds of EWM Elemen-tary during the Festival of Leaves. Last year, this was a wonderful outreach and visibility event that reached well over 500 children who participated. Last year, 11 FRUMC families donated a total of $1445 to help with this fundraiser and others volunteered their time. The EBS family is so grateful and hopes this year will surpass 2010! If you are able to volunteer or donate, please call Beth Waller at 540-671-6145 or bethwaller@mris.com. Areas of need are: penny prizes, gift cards for raffle prizes, gently used stuffed animals for prizes and VOLUNTEERS. Beth's goal is to again find 10 families to donate $100 each to cover the projected expenses for the day. Activities will include two bounce houses and dozens of games for kids of all ages, so please mark your calendars for October 8th from 11-5! The EBS mission thanks you for your support!

Goin’ Green… Going Green? Eat Local!

Enjoy the Front Royal Farmer’s Market! Located behind the gazebo on Main Street, the market is open on Thursdays and Saturdays from June through October. On Thursdays they are open from 3pm to 7pm and Saturday hours are from 9am to 1pm. The ven-dors offer a wide variety of vegetables, fruits, and berries, with eggs, honey, candles, cookies, herbs, jams, jellies, bread, sausage available for purchase. Several artisans also participate. Head on down to the market and enjoy some of our wonderful valley summer produce!

“A Trip Down Memory Lane” promises to dredge up unique events and dark secrets as the Free Spirits congregate at Isaac Walton Park on September 28th. After a tasty lunch in the old farm house by the lake, we’ll share significant (and insignificant) events from our past, with several games of bingo featuring unusual prizes, interspersed between our “slices of life.” Who knows? In this peaceful set-ting, we may even have a “bare” visit us.

On October 19th, Graves Mountain is the site for a fantastic home-cooked, family style luncheon. We’ll return home over Skyline Drive to view the fall flora and fauna. Sign up in the church office early because this is always a sold-out event.

Shenandoah Caverns and its three special mu-seums is our destination for the November 16th outing. A spe-cial luncheon and guided tour of the attractions is included.

All church seniors, 50 and over, are invited to join in the fine fellowship for fantastic fun and good food!

A robe, specifically one that’s new and white, symbol-

izes the righteousness we receive through Jesus’ death and

resurrection. Isaiah 61:10 speaks of “the garments of salva-

The Mission Leg will be sponsoring Coffee Hour after the 8:30 Service on September 18th.

Join us for the wonderful refreshments and fellowship!

The Music Ministry will be sponsoring a farewell Coffee Hour on September 25th to thank Delyn Celec for her con-tributions to FRUMC over the last year. Please join us after

the 8:30 Service.

The UMCOR Coffee Project links congregations with small coffee producers through the Equal Exchange organization, which pays a fair price to the growers. The great thing about this project is that you can save money and do some good at the same time. This premium product is available in a variety of roasts and grinds, as well as whole beans. Typical prices run between $6.00 and $8.00 for a 12 oz. bag. Tea and wonderfully rich chocolate bars are also available!

As hard as it is to believe, Fall is coming and the church of-fice will be getting back into full

swing. We are once again

appealing to you for a bit of your time once or twice a month as a volunteer in the outer office. If you have computer skills, that is great—if you have no computer skills, that is great too!

Morning and afternoon shifts of 3 hours are available. We have a great time, so come and join us! If you are interested please call Ginger in the church office.

The Flower Chart Calendar is located in the church office and you may sign up for any avail-able Sunday for Altar Flowers by writing your name and phone number on the chart. If you would like an altar committee member to arrange the flowers please let Susan know. The committee can prepare a nice ar-rangement with minimal expense if you desire or you may contact a local florist to prepare and deliver your arrangement. Thank you.

$tewardship New$

We were able to pay our bills in a timely manner this summer. Now let us focus on keep-

ing up the good work and catching up on our apportionment payments. To date we owe $29,473.00. I hope to

report a lower number in this column next month!

The hot summer and price increase hit the electric bill hard this month. Our average bill of

around $1300.00 increased significantly due to the warm weather and the watering of our new plantings..

Thanks for your continued financial support of FRUMC.

A BIG thank you to all of our teachers and volunteers who worked tirelessly during the

last 5 weeks for Vacation Bible School and Kidz! Summer Camp. We had a wonderful turnout for

both, including many families not already members of FRUMC. Your love and dedication to

teach about the love of God thru Jesus will live on within the children and their families forever.

Mission Saturation Events

During the month of September there are several opportunities for

Missions. The Winchester District will be hosting Bishop Kammerer

at a banquet on Friday September 23rd.

On Saturday the 24th, there will be a gleaning at Marker Miller

Orchards at 11 am in conjunction with the Society of St. Andrew.

Also on Saturday September 24th, the Stephens City UMC will host

the Winchester District Mini School of Missions from 9-4.

On Sunday September 25th Derrick Parson, a Mission Witness

will be speaking at all of the churches in the Winchester District.

UMM Munch and Mingle…from Bob Cullers

Following our summer hibernation, the UM Men resume our regular second Tuesday of the month meet-ings in the Fellowship Hall on September 12th at 6 pm. Chaplain Cad Hrbek’s devotional program precedes our sumptuous supper, then our agenda features the 13 affiliated non-profit agencies supported by our local United Way. We’ll be the first audience to view their newly updated film. Also in September, UM Men tee off in a golf tournament which will benefit Heart Havens home for the handicapped. The tourney is scheduled for September 10th at Bowling Green Country Club. In addition, we’re continuing our regular 9am Tuesday morning yard-upkeep chores at the Heritage Society on Chester Street. At our October 10th dinner meeting, we’ll hear about Chad Hrbek’s and Emily Crawford’s adventures in the Dominican Republic during their “Voices of Youth” mission trip. Since their return, they have been touring churches around the Virginia Conference. A presentation saluting the American Legion is the feature of our November 14th feast. In November, we’ll also be helping the UM Women with their Fall Bazaar set for the 4th and 5th, as well as traveling to the UM Men’s Annual Retreat and Spiritual Conference in Blackstone and participating in the Winchester District Fall Rally. Capping off the year is our December 12th special Christmas program, accompanied by the UMW and our significant others. Vice President and Program Chairman Dave Hardy has promised special surprise entertain-ment for this annual shindig.

The Jubilant Bells and JC’s Crew will begin rehearsals on September 11th according to Sherry Haffer and Allyson Shaner. This is a schedule change so please make a note on your calendars. The Crusader Choir and Joy Bells will meet at 4pm on August 31st in the Choir Room to begin the Fall practices. Please contact Cary Burke at frumceducation@comcast.net with any questions. The Carillon Bells will begin practice at 7pm on Wednesday, September 7th. Sanctuary Choir rehearsals begin on Wednesday evening, September 7th at 8pm. All are welcome. Tom Bowen will lead the Sanctuary Choir in the month of September. We are grateful to Tom

An “Ecumenical Community Choir” is being formed to

include singers from throughout the community. The

first practice is Saturday, September 24th. The

scheduled performance is November 1st at 7:00 p.m. at

FRUMC.

Participants must attend at least four rehearsals in order

to participate in the performance. For more informa-

we bid farewell to Delyn Celec as a staff

been instrumental in developing our music

ministry in new directions. Delyn and Sarah

will continue to be connected to our church

of their musical gifts with the congregation.

Coming Events: The calendar “says” this month is September and that means time for The United Methodist Women of Front Royal to start their fall meetings. If you are new in our church and/or the community and don’t know about our UMW, call Betty Ann Gibson (635-5946) our Membership Nurture and Outreach chairperson or Jacque Bowman (635-4948) our UMW President. If you would like to meet other ladies, help with Mission Work Projects, Fall Bazaar items, quilting, enjoy a social time, attend District and/or VA. Conference events, or National, come for a meeting. You need not be a member of our Methodist Church. If you are interested or need a ride, call one of the ladies above, We meet 4 times a year and have subgroups who meet monthly at various times, on usually the first Tuesday and Wednesday of the month. The Front Royal UMW is starting off a busy year with Violet Carter (635-8401) Chairing the Book Sale on Septem-ber 9th 10th and 11th. It will be held in the Fellowship Hall. Books and help are needed. If you have some books that are just taking up space on your shelves or have books with no place to put them, our UMW would like to have them for their sale. Ladies will be there all day Thursday (September 8th) setting up and receiving books. If you have many books, and would like a pick-up, call Violet Carter at the beginning of the week to arrange pick-up. Watch the weekly church Bulletin for further information. Violet could use some help especially on Thursday, and she also needs cus-tomers! All are invited. Call your Circle Leader or Violet if you can help. September 18th from 2:30 to 5:00 PM. is the Annual Winchester District meeting. It will be held at the United Methodist Church in Emmanuel UMC in Fred. Co. We will car pool from the church parking lot! Come and meet new ladies, your district officers, and hear of events of the year. Call Jacque Bowman (635-4948) if you would like to go. There is usually a social time from 2:30 PM to 3:00 PM with the annual meeting to follow. September 20th at 12 noon will be a salad luncheon, program and meeting in the Fellowship Hall. The Sarahs will be providing a variety of salads for the ladies to share with Phyllis Blankenship presenting a Mission program. September 27th at 7:00 PM in the LFK, the UMW Executive Meeting. All Circle leaders, all UMW officers are asked to attend, if you can’t attend, please get a substitute and/or call Jacque Bowman, 635-4948.

The Mission Leg has placed jars in the Sanctuary to collect change to send to Clara Biswas, our Missionary in Cambodia. She had spoken to our congregation regarding her desire to take the children she works with to a water park once a year. She has been unable to take the children due to lack of funds. Please feel free to drop your spare change or a few dollars in the jars to show the children that we care.

During Labor Day weekend worship, many congrega-

tions bless members of various occupations. From painting to parent-

ing, from truck driving to teaching, from farming to pharmaceutical

research, work is honored as holy.

Some might believe that certain jobs — pastor, missionary,

bishop — are holier than others. But in his classic book The Practice of

the Presence of God, Brother Lawrence tells of performing even the

most common, tedious tasks as holy service to God: “I turn the cake

that is frying on the pan for love of [God],” he wrote. “It is enough for

me to pick up but a straw from the ground for the love of God.”

No matter your field of work, remember that any task done in

God’s name and to his glory is holy.
