Business Mission to Mongolia 29th May to 4th Taiwan is situated in the West Pacific between Japan and the Philippines. Its jurisdic9on extends to the archipelagoes of Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu, as well as numerous other islets. The total area of Taiwan proper and its outlying islands is 36,192.8 square kilometers. At about the size of the Netherlands, but with a popula9on of some 23 million, Taiwan is more populous than three- quarters of the world’s na9ons. Mountain ranges with many peaks reaching over 3,000 meters—including East Asia’s highest, Jade Mountain (Yushan)—and forested foothills occupy more than half of its area. The island also features volcanic mountains, tablelands, coastal plains and basins. SiXng in the path of warm ocean currents off the east coast of con9nental Asia, Taiwan proper is uniquely blessed with a wide range of clima9c zones from tropical to temperate. This, in combina9on with fer9le soil and abundant rainfall, makes it an agricultural paradise with land covering 7,998.3 square kilometer, where virtually any kind of fruit or vegetable can be cul9vated. Economy at Glance: Taiwan has a dynamic capitalist economy. Exports, led by electronics, machinery, and petrochemicals have provided the primary impetus for economic development. Free trade agreements have proliferated in East Asia over the past several years. Following the landmark Economic Coopera9on Framework Agreement (ECFA) signed with China in June 2010, Taiwan in July 2013 signed a free trade deal with New Zealand and, in November, inked a trade pact with Singapore. The island runs a trade surplus, largely because of its surplus with China, and its foreign reserves are the world's fiah largest, behind those of China, Japan, Saudi Arabia, and Switzerland. In 2006 China overtook the US to become Taiwan's second-largest source of imports aaer Japan. China is also the island's number one des9na9on for foreign direct investment. Taiwan since 2009 has gradually loosened rules governing Chinese investment on the island and has also secured greater market access for its investors in the mainland. The Forbes report in 2015 ranked Taiwan in “best countries for business” No: 21 and in “Innova9on” No: 11 Taiwan in figures 2015: GDP (PPP): USD 530 bn. GDP Growth: 3.8% GDP per Capita: $46,000 Trade Balance/GDP: 12.4% Popula9on: 23.4M Public Debt/GDP: 33% Unemployment: 4% Infla9on: 1.2% Benefits of the Mission: SACC is organizing an entrepreneurial mission to Taiwan in close co-opera9on with the Chinese Interna9onal Economic Coopera9on Associa9on (CIECA) in Taipei. Swiss entrepreneurs will be able to meet key representa9ves of various industries and organisa9ons as well as meet with relevant Ministries in order to get a first hand understanding of the vast business poten9al Taiwan offers. The mission par9cipants will benefit from the following: Networking events and official recep@ons in order to establish important economic and poli@cal contacts.
