The women of the JLI have been very busy over the past several months!

We conducted a wonderful bus tour attended primarily by our newest members. Lulu Lapp ensured that our members visited Riley Hospital for Children’s Occupational Therapy Department and a current community partner, Girls Inc. Julie Rowlas facilitated the morning and the participants learned more about the JLI and its history during this wonderful experience.

We assisted in the second Weekend to End Breast Cancer. Co-Chairs Jayme Jones and Ashley Powell led our members in a successful volunteer experience.

Two wonderful sustainer events have already been conducted during the 2010-11 JLI year! Sustainer Representatives to the Board this year are Julie Davis, Kelley Hurst and Tanya Stuart Overdorf. They have an amazing committee of sustainers who are conducting very engaging opportunities. Committee members Patty Curran and Jane Schlegel arranged for a wonderful time at the Indiana Historical Society this fall. Additionally, a second sustainer event was held at Holiday Mart Shoppers’ Eve. Nearly 60 sustainers were present including Claire Clark, the first Holiday Mart Chair from 1971. Claire spoke to the attendees about her wonderful experience as the chair of the first event and thanked her committee for all of their hard work. Nancy Harris, Link Krimendahl and Suzie Wurster served on the first committee and were in attendance. Also, Sue Zinzer, who served as the JLI president during the first Holiday Mart, graciously attended. Thank you to Lisa Allen and Karen Heldt for Co-Chairing the event. It is so wonderful to be part of an organization that honors and celebrates our newest members and those who have sustained us for years. Please consider attending future sustainer led events.

Holiday Mart was a wonderful success this year. The committee was energetically and passionately led by Anne Buskirk, Stacie Hannaford and Jacquie Rosen. So many women contributed to the success of our 40th event. Members like Megan Berg, who has graciously given much of her time and expertise in graphic design to the JLI, continue to make our events successful.

What an honor to have Sally Lugar and Tanya Stuart Overdorf receive the 2010 Mayor’s Community Service Awards this year! Additionally, Julie Davis is a 2010 Spirit of the Prairie Honoree. I know these women would assert that the JLI provided some of the foundation and training for them to become trained civic and community leaders! We are so proud that they are JLI members.

The JLI sent Jeri Duncan, Tory Flynn, Larissa McCormick, and Racquel Richardson to the AJLI’s Organizational Development Institute (ODI) for leadership and area specific training. These women have provided detailed feedback and each have provided reports to the Board and the Nominating Committee. The JLI was well represented by these enthusiastic women who will work to create the future of the JLI.

Please read the article enclosed by Nicole McCulloch and Julie Rowlas. We are working to ensure that your efforts with the JLI result in meaningful change in Indianapolis. Thanks to each of you for your continued support of the JLI!

Members of this year’s Board of Directors volunteer at Holiday Mart tear down. Molly Chavers, Melissa Etzler, Larissa McCormick, Stacy Payne Miller, Cece Gerdenich, Lulu Lapp.

2010-11 At LArGe PosItIoN to exPLore reteNtIoNBy Molly Chavers, Board at Large

MEMBERSHIP

In a time when so many of us feel pulled in a million directions, from family to work, volunteer experiences to nurturing relationships with the ones we care about, we’ve probably all examined the time we spend outside home and office.

For some, their JLI experience has come into question. Do I feel like my time is well spent? Am I valued by the organization? Am I getting back as much as I’m putting in? As with any experience, it’s important to take inventory of these questions. But what if the answer to any of the questions above is no?

Many organizations – both locally and across the nation – are experiencing a downturn in members. The Junior League of Indianapolis is no exception. That’s why President Cece Gerdenich has asked me, in the role of Board at Large, to explore the memberships’ varying viewpoints on how the JLI can best maximize and optimize our members’ time and energy spent.

To fulfill this responsibility, I’ve been working closely with Membership Vice President, Lulu Lapp, and Marketing Vice President, Stacy Payne Miller, to ensure that every member who wants to have her voice heard on this issue is able. The work of strategically positioning our league with an issue-based community impact focus, under the leadership of Community Vice President, Julie Rowlas, as well as the relevant and informative trainings that the Training and Personal Development Vice President, Jen Rueth, have planned with their committees are key components to our league’s ultimate goals of achieving higher membership satisfaction.

In July, I spoke to the incoming Provisional members. Several shared their thoughts with me on the course of their year to date. The Transfer Committee has provided excellent suggestions as

well. At the October General Meeting, I shared the focus of my position with the membership. Since that time, I’ve received valuable feedback from many of you. Many thanks to you who have reached out to share ideas, suggestions and thoughts in such a positive way.

What can the JLI do to raise the level of satisfaction of our members? How can we ensure that an organization that has contributed so much to the Indianapolis community is positioned to do so for the next 100 years?

This leads me to a question I pose to all of you: “why do you choose to be a part of the JLI?”

In the coming weeks, you’ll be asked to participate in a stay survey through the Hotmail. This idea was brought to the Membership Council by one of its chairs. Keri Korkhouse Hale was asked to do this by her employer. Why did she stay in her current role or at her company? It’s a question some of us probably ponder in many facets of our lives.

Suffice it to say, no organization, person or thing can be everything to everyone. The JLI is no exception. But as each month goes by, and we find ourselves working diligently in our committees, attending a sustainer event or a general meeting, learning something new in a training, volunteering, or taking on the large task of identifying our issue-based community impact focus, it’s my hope we can all take note of the many benefits of being a part of this great organization.

We’ll report back to you on those things that hit the top of the list, as well as the things that strike at the heart of our varied interests, and individuality in a few months. Until then, help us make the JLI all it can be by letting your voice be heard.

You know that friend who is so much like you – the one who is energetic, with a generous spirit and contagious smile, the one who is a natural leader with a strong sense of responsibility and community? Is she a member of the JLI? If not, then why not? Maybe it is just because no one has ever asked her.

The Membership Recruitment Committee has already begun the search for next year’s provisional class. We met lots of interesting and enthusiastic ladies at Get IndyVolved, a SunKing Social, and the Holiday Mart booth who are interested in learning more about the JLI, the work we do and the opportunities it presents. But making this initial contact is just the first step. We need your help, not only in finding more potential members, but in encouraging and supporting them to join the JLI.

The JLI will be holding informational meetings for women

interested in joining the JLI before the general meetings in January, February and April. Dates, times and locations are available on the website. You can help by inviting that friend (or friends) you think would be perfect for the JLI. Even better, you can help by making guests who attend the meeting feel welcome. This year, each guest/prospective new member will be given a distinctive name tag identifying her as a guest. Please seek out our guests, introduce yourself and share with them why you love the JLI, and please, if you invite a guest, be sure to follow up and see how she enjoyed her experience and whether she had any questions that were not answered.

Thanks in advance for doing your part in helping us keep the JLI growing with women who share your commitment and enthusiasm for our mission.

JLI leadership, a couple of transfer members and much of this year’s provisional class took a tour of the city on October 2. President Cece Gerdenich narrated what turned out to be a wet but fun Saturday morning. The tour kicked off outside our current office and traveled south past the Blue Ribbon Pavilion at the Indiana State Fairgrounds – current home to Holiday Mart! Our first stop was Riley Hospital for Children, where we visited the Occupational Therapy Department, JLI’s first community project in 1922. We also had the chance to see the Ronald McDonald House within Riley Hospital and the ground floor of the new Simon Family Tower.

Our next stop on the tour was Girls Inc. of Greater Indianapolis, which was especially fun, as we noticed several sustainers highlighted as past Touchstone Award winners. We also heard from a couple of Provisional members who are just starting their placement as facilitators for Girls Inc. – how exciting to see how our members are positively impacting the lives of young women around Indianapolis!

We passed by St. Mary’s Child Center, the Julian Center, the Children’s Museum, and the Schnull-Rauch House on the trip. The tour made a dreary morning much brighter and offered just a glimpse into our history of building better communities. There may have to be two buses next year, as everyone wanted to see more!

The second annual JLI Scavenger Hunt was held on September 30th where the participants explored Indianapolis’ Historic Canal. Approximately twenty women were in attendance for this year’s event where team work was accomplished and fabulous prizes were rewarded. Thank you to all the ladies who participated and made this event spectacular. See you next year …

The second MOC event of the season was a huge success! Twelve JLI members gathered at the Indianapolis Art Center on October 7th for a chance to get close and personal with the art of glass sculpting. Though the ovens were over 1,200 degrees, members braved the heat and made beautiful flowers of all different colors. After the session was complete, members had some social time to discuss their experience over a glass of apple cider and a pumpkin cupcake. Overall, everyone had a great time, even though most of them could not see a future in glass sculpting!

COMMUNITY

JLI ExPLoRINg WAyS to IMPACt CRItICAL EDuCAtIoN ISSuESBy Julie L. Rowlas, Community VP and Nicole R. McCulloch, Community VP Elect

From early childhood education, education reform, and the staggering high school dropout rate (Marion County has the second highest in the nation), education issues are getting a lot of attention in our community. In October, The Mind Trust and United Way of Central Indiana hosted screenings of a documentary film called “Waiting for Superman.” Following the movie, key educational figures in our community were called upon to respond and discuss the film. While the movie does not provide all of the different views or answers to the problems, it is opening up the eyes of a wider audience, sparking debates, and motivating our community to take action.

In accordance with our mission, the Junior League of Indianapolis is positioning to take action.

As we have explained through Hotline and Hotmail articles and at the Fall general meetings, our community impact model is being revised to focus on a particular issue in order to achieve significant and measurable outcomes. We are no longer going to wait and see who comes to us for assistance; we are going to proactively seek to partner with organizations who are tackling issues that are important to our community and to our members. We have asked membership what matters the most within our topic of “health and education of children and their families.” Based on member feedback, we are proceeding to investigate how we can impact education issues.

This new approach to community impact takes the elements of our mission to a new level, and we hope to become a much stronger and more relevant organization through this process. All of our members will be educated on the issues we undertake and there will be more opportunities to develop civic leadership skills. Also, all of our members will know exactly how their volunteer hours and financial contributions are bettering the community. We will likely be able to attract more donors and sponsors by being tied to a particular issue; and the community at large will recognize the talented and powerful organization of women that we are. Most importantly, we will be able to affect more positive change in our community than ever before.

Over the next few months, the Community Council and Community Research and Development (CR&D) Committee will take the lead to define our focus areas and desired outcomes with the help of our Community Advisory Council, which includes community experts outside of the JLI. The CR&D Committee will look to develop strong partnerships which maximize the resources the Junior League brings to the table. Working with the Membership and Training and Personal Development Councils, they will aim to create meaningful placement opportunities for our members that will not only help the community, but foster personal growth, develop civic and community leadership skills, and increase commitment to the JLI.

We sincerely appreciate all of the feedback provided by our members on their areas of interest. It is clear that we have many members who are well informed, well connected, and ready to take action. Please continue to support our transition and let us know if you have questions or suggestions. We hope you are as excited as we are to use the power of our organization to make a lasting positive change in our community.

COMMUNITY

gIRLS INC. - BECoMINg StRoNg, SMARt AND BoLD!By Kris Willing, Girls Inc. Committee

Several women have suggested that I volunteer at Girls Inc. for my placement this year. I am so glad that I followed their cue! After participating in two well thought out training sessions with fellow JLI volunteers, we were prepared to deal effectively with the girl that has all of the answers, the one that distracts the class, or the girl that chooses not to participate at all. My JLI partner, Marianne Proctor, and I agree that we have a fine group of seven girls.

Girls Inc. teaches girls, ages 6-18 to be Strong, to be Smart, and to be Bold. Their bill of rights allows girls to have the right to:

• be themselves and to resist gender stereotypes• express themselves with originality and enthusiasm • take risks, to strive freely, and to take pride in success• accept and appreciate their bodies • have confidence in themselves and to be safe in the world• prepare for interesting work and economic independence

Marianne and I are in the midst of facilitating a six-week program called “Work it Out” for 9 to 11-year-olds. “Work it Out” teaches young ladies how to get along with others...more specifically, with other girls. JLI volunteers also have opportunities to teach Economic Literacy, Media Literacy, and Redefining Beauty. There are 14 programs in all. All programs are fairly easy to facilitate with the help of a Girls Inc. messenger tote full of supplies and a binder with step-by-step actions to follow.

In our particular group of seven girls, one girl is very wise for her age and already has a good sense of who she is. A few girls seem very meek and shy. And the remainder of the girls ... well ... we haven’t quite figured out yet. We are anxious to fast forward a few weeks and see the glimmers of positive change that we have helped instill into these ladies.

Girls Inc. is serving close to 2,000 girls throughout the greater Indianapolis area. Girls Inc. has helped many girls, just as the JLI has helped many women ... women like me.

JLI was proud to be an official sponsor of the Weekend to End Breast Cancer benefiting St. Vincent Foundation for the second year. Thank you to all of our fabulous volunteers who supported the event the weekend of September 25-26. Our participation will impact the lives of thousands through breast cancer and gynecologic cancer research, treatment, and care right here in Indianapolis. Congratulations to WEBC Co-Chairs Jayme Jones, Ashley Powell and the WEBC Committee members for their hard work and enthusiasm.

tWo SuStAININg MEMBERS RECEIVE MAyoR’S CoMMuNIty SERVICE AWARDS

At a ceremony at the Indiana Historical Society on Tuesday, October 5, Sustainers Sarah “Sally” Lugar and Tanya Stuart Overdorf received awards to honor their volunteer service to the City of Indianapolis.

The Mayor’s Community Service Awards were created to recognize citizens of Indianapolis for their volunteer contributions and commitments to community service. Nominees are judged on initiative, good work accomplished through volunteer service, and commitment to the improvement of the City of Indianapolis and Marion County through voluntary personal service to its citizens to meet community needs.

Sally was acknowledged for her service in the category of Health/Sports/Youth and Tanya received her award for dedication to the Arts and Philanthropy. Sally was nominated by the Presidents Roundtable and Tanya by the JLI. Mayor Ballard personally provided a certificate of accomplishment as well as two tickets to the Mayor’s Suite for the Monday night football game on November 1 to each recipient. In addition, a brick will be engraved with their names. The bricks will be placed at the Mayor’s Volunteer Plaza.

Congratuations Sally and Tanya!

Tanya Stuart Overdorf and Sally Lugar (pictured with Indianapolis mayor Greg Ballard) were each awarded a Mayor’s Community Service Award

Julie Davis was recently chosen to receive the 2010 Spirit of the Prairie Award. The Spirit of the Prairie Award provides Conner Prairie the opportunity to acknowledge those who have created a distinctly American story with their vision, passion, dedication and courage. Honorees must exemplify the values of Conner

Prairie through their achievements, courage, innovation, vision and commitment to excellence. The Award was presented on September 11, 2010 during the eighth annual Spirit of the Prairie reception. TRAINING & PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

M&M’s. You love the candy, your kids love the candy – but what relevance do M&M’s have to the Junior League of Indianapolis?

Everything.M&M stands for Membership & Money – two pivotal items

that our organization needs in order to continue carrying out our mission. It is easy for us to say, “Membership Committee handles recruiting, I need to focus on Holiday Mart,” or “I don’t know how to raise money, besides that’s what Fund Development is supposed to do.”

We must start taking accountability for our organization and become invested in both Members – and raising Money. M&M’s – it’s for everyone.

Our vision is to “be a catalyst for lasting change”, let’s focus on that word “catalyst” and lastly our diversity statement starts with “The Junior League of Indianapolis reaches out to all women…” Do we…really? When was the last time you mentioned Junior League to someone? Maybe you know of a donor whose personal mission coalesces with the League’s? Why not step forward and partner the pairs of member and money to the League? We, the women who make up the Junior League of Indianapolis, are supposed to comprise an organization and be a catalyst ... these

two things cannot be done alone: it takes the whole League to make a difference.

We want to make an impact in our community, we want to make lasting change, and that takes time and money; less time however, with more hands. The more members we have the more hands we have to complete more projects and to pair financial partnerships with the community through their personal relationships with the end goal in mind, to make a bigger impact.

So, get out there and promote the Junior League of Indianapolis. Know who we are and what we do so that you can spread the word and get other women to want to join our organization, and other companies and individuals to donate to our mission. Do you want to change the community? Be the change you foresee, be the catalyst for change. When it is time for a new provisional year, make it your personal mission to sponsor. Make it your personal mission to connect members of the Finance Team to those within the community that you have relationships with.

As a member, be fully involved, be fully motivated, and don’t limit yourself to your placement. M&M’s can melt in your hand, so become fully vested and open your hands and minds to new members and new money to the organization that we love so much.

TRAINING & PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

Would you like to be able to walk into a room and talk to anyone?

Would you like to learn how to take the perfect picture?Would you like to be able to understand enough to effectively

communicate finances with your family or friends? These questions are just a sample of the topics that will be

covered in Personal Improvement Challenge (PIC) Series this year. The Personal Development Committee hopes to have a topic of interest that appeals to everyone. The following list is a few financial basics that everyone can use right now:

1. Don’t borrow from your 401k. It is a leg breaker, and it wants its money back.

2. Being upside down on a house or car is avoidable. Avoid it.3. Match your 401k match. And it will match your match.

4. Don’t take your debit or credit card to a casino. There is no need to tempt yourself with other peoples’ money.

5. Married with kids and no life insurance? You will not win parent of the year and you will not collect $200.

6. Going over maximum lease miles? Why? Do the math. 7. Stop giving money to your adult children. 8. Donate some money to charity. No matter how broke you

are, someone is always broker. 9. Always buy lemonade from your neighborhood kids’

lemonade stand. It is the right thing to do. Don’t pay in coins. Give them a dollar.

10. Do your taxes on time. Late fees are nuts.– from www.petetheplanner.com
