St. Basil and the Holy Spirit

As we celebrate the feast of Pentecost and the coming of the Holy Spirit, did you know that our patron, St. Basil, had an important role in understanding the Holy Spirit? After the council of Nicaea in 325 there were still some questions about the relationship of the Holy Spirit to the Father and Son. In 375

St. Basil composed a treatise entitled “On the Holy Spirit.” His explanation was the source for Saint Ambrose on his work about the Spirit and that is how St. Basil‘s ideas came to influence the Christian west.

At the time of his writing there were opponents who argued against the Divinity of the Holy Spirit. St. Basil clarified the role of the Holy Spirit in that it shares the same divine attributes as the Father and the Son. The Holy Spirit is the Paraclete (advocate, comforter, helper) who reflects the goodness of God the Father, who is everywhere present, who is in all things, who gives life, and who energizes Mary and the disciples at Pentecost giving them the courage and boldness to preach the Gospel. It is the same Spirit that has been given to us in Confirmation.

The church owes a huge debt to Saint Basil for his wonderful writing and clarification on the divinity and role of the Holy Spirit.

As I submit this note, we have just received approval from the diocese to begin the public celebration of Mass under very controlled circumstances. Because worship services are among the places people are most likely to contract COVID-19, due to having a number of people together for a relatively long period of

time, we have to be very, very careful to follow all the safety protocols.

Registered parishioners were sent a letter listing the protocols. Keep in mind that these restrictions need to be followed if we are to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe – especially those who are most vulnerable. Bishop Bradley has extended the general dispensation from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass (or the Saturday Vigil) until September 6, 2020. This applies to all Catholics in the Diocese of Kalamazoo – whether you live here or not – but it especially applies to those who are vulnerable or who come into close contact with them. Also, if you cannot wear a face mask for some medical reason, you should not attend Mass.

We are starting very slowly, with only one Sunday Mass, to get some experience with how it will all work and also to give us a chance to recruit and train the necessary volunteers. If you would like to volunteer to be a check-in person, an usher, or part of the team spray-disinfecting the building after Mass, please call the office.

I can tell you, this isn’t anything they trained me for in seminary, yet it’s all part of the adventure with God.

St. Basil - Did You Know?

Have you wondered how you can use your YOUCAT or Bibles on a daily basis? Here is a link to a free app called YOUCAT Daily: https://www.youcat.org/daily that does both. It can be down loaded in English, Spanish, or 5 other languages of your choice.

Once the app is downloaded, each day you will receive a daily Bible verse, a question and answer right from the YOUCAT, and short words of inspiration. This is a great way for families to sit, reflect, discuss, and pray though the word of God together.

Please email me with your ideas and suggestions to [email protected] or by text or phone at 269-355-5671.

Join with other St. Basil teens for some face time on Zoom at 8:00 p.m. this Sunday, May 31. Father Jim and Sylvia Verdonk will be online, leading discussion. The meeting ID is the same as in past weeks; the password is StBasil. Contact Sylvia at 616-446-5113 by phone or text, or email [email protected] for more information. HAPPY PENTECOST.... HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO OUR

CATHOLIC CHURCH!

In last Sunday's Gospel reading, Jesus told his disciples to "Go,...and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit...." This Great Commission is our "co-mission" with Jesus, led and strengthened by the Holy Spirit. Jesus is with us! He did not "leave us orphans."

After Pentecost, the Apostles traveled throughout the known world, spreading the Good News of Jesus' life, death, and resurrection. Only John was spared a martyr's death. The Apostles gave their lives in service to God's Kingdom as presented to them and lived out in the person of Jesus Christ.

This weekend, we celebrate the Feast of Pentecost, the birthday of the Church, remembering our own call to sacrifice and service: to "make disciples of all nations." Whenever we are able, let us feed the hungry, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless, visit the sick, help those who doubt, comfort the sorrowful, and pray for the living and the dead. We are called to greatness, in mission with the Holy Spirit!

Please, if you are able, consider donating non-perishable food to the We Care I.N.C. Food Pantry. If there

We have moved the drop-off location to ensure that the items make it to the appropriate agencies. Items should be dropped off in the church near the office. Personal Care Pantry We will also accept contributions to the Personal Care Pantry. We Care I.N.C. asks for items such as laundry soap, shampoo, hand soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes. We will continue the collection through the month of May.

The St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry remains open during the pandemic. We are providing a drive through service on Thursdays between 1-4 p.m., located at 201 S. Walnut, Bangor (back door).

Happy end of the school year! It certainly didn't end the way we thought it would, but all survived, learned a few things (both students and teachers), and we're now starting to look ahead to 2020-21. Even though we missed out on a few of our fun May and June activities, the teachers have done their best to fill the void with a few different activities such as virtual field trips, a virtual field day, and virtual award ceremonies. Mrs. Beery took some time to make quick socially-distanced stops to her students' homes.

Ms. Melissa visited each of her stu-dents through her alter ego "Ms. Flat Melissa." While no virtual activ-ity can ever replace the real thing, we hope that students enjoyed them none the less.

As I said, we're now looking ahead to next fall, knowing that there may be some changes to how we do things. The main thing is the safe return of our students to school. We so miss being with them and look forward to being back in the classrooms. Our school building has been too quiet! While there is still an element of uncertainty as to how things will look, the staff and I are committed to our students' well-being and anxiously look forward to once again see all those smiling faces!

Don't forget about our Virtual Ribs ’n Raffle Auction—online style! We have a great selection of raffle items and also plan to do a modified version of our Fund-a-Need. The auction will run from noon on June 11 until 11:59 p.m. on June 14. More details coming soon!

It sure is nice that it has finally started to feel like spring (even a bit like summer!). I managed to make a stop at Countryside Greenhouse with my mom and found every-thing on my list. I got all my flowers planted and now have the hubby adding new water lines from our sprinkler system so nothing goes "dry" while we're out camping this summer (if we ever manage to get out camping!). At least the mice are enjoying themselves in there! Have a wonderful week-end and thank you for your continued support of Saint Basil Catholic School!

St. Boniface, Feast Day June 5

Lord, send out Your spirit,

and renew the face of the earth.

Ray Llorens, keeper of our St. Basil Prayer List and all around good and generous man, recently sent an email of gratitude to our parish for all those working to make the live-streaming of our Sunday Masses a reality.

He wrote: I want to thank you for celebrating the Masses on Facebook. Martha, I admire your reading of the Scriptures, and I am pretty sure the organist is Cecilia. Good job as always. Fr. Jim, thank you for the streaming of the Masses on Facebook. Last, but not least, Deacon John: Your efforts are what brings the celebration and the messages together. Whenever you give the homily, I feel like I'm in a history class, and there is going to be a test after Mass. So I listen.

I have been trying to let more people know about our website and Facebook timeline through our Daily Prayer Chain. It’s a great way to spend our homebound hours.

Thank you for continuing the Sunday bulletin format. It’s nice to know the daily and Sunday Mass intentions are still included. Please let me know if there is anything I can do for the PR of our parish through the Daily Prayer Chain. Until we can make it to Mass again, thank you all and God bless you.
