NOW that the Coronavela had bid farewell in our tubes, the government, more in particular, our lawmakers can confront more pressing issues that have continuous-ly beset the country today.

The passing into law of the reproductive health bill has remained elusive as it is still enveloped with issues of morality. Thus, the tug-of-war between the church and the state has stirred various reactions. However, this issue should be put at rest anytime soon because teenage pregnancy is becoming a major chal-lenge for the government in the health department.

Statistics show that births born to teenage moth-ers in Northern Mindanao in 2009 is recorded at 11, 309 (5.2% of the country’s total) placing the region at 9th place among regions in the country with most num-

ber of births with teenage mothers. Total births born to teenage mothers in the country was recorded at 195,662 or approximately 11.2 percent of the total births in 2009.

Northern Mindanao is on the ninth spot next to the Bicol Region with 5.5 percent and is higher than 0.7 percentage point to Cagayan Valley. Top three spots were grabbed by the National Capital Region (14.6%), CALABARZON (14.3%) and Central Luzon (12.2%).

Most alarming to this

figure is that 56 of the births born to teenage mothers in the region were of mothers aging below 15 years old. This figure is a disturbing fact since these teen-age mothers do not know yet the dynamics of motherhood and caring for a child espe-cially that they themselves still need it. More than ten thousand births were born to fifteen to nineteen year – old mothers.

Births to young women also posed high health risks both for the child and the mother. This might lead to maternal deaths because

the body is not yet ready for giving birth. They are at increased risk for complica-tions, such as premature la-bor and other consequences. On the other hand, children born to teenage mothers are more likely to suffer social, and emotional problems. Effects of teenage pregnancy are not just pointed towards the health of the mother and the baby; these teens are far more likely to end up poor and have their children grow up in poverty.

Not only that, young women who gave birth loses opportunities like finishing their education and might not find a decent job. Teen mothers usually never fin-ish schooling, so the lower level of education doesn’t allow them to get a proper job or be prepared for the parenting that is ahead of them. Their career options are more than limited.

WITH the opening of class-es this week, Mayor Vicente “Dongkoy” Y. Emano or-dered the Cagayan de Oro Police Office (COCPO) to increase police visibility in all private and public schools and universities in the city.

He said security should be tightened to protect pupils and students from criminal elements who prey on them.

He noted that petty crimes are prevalent dur-ing school days and near school campuses.

“Kinahanglan gayud ang police visibility sa atong mga tunghaan ning pagbu-kas sa klase aron mapak-gang ang mga dautang elemento nga mohimo og krimen sa atong mga ka-bataan,” the mayor cited in a press statement. (LCR)

IN preparation for the hold-ing of the joint commemora-tion of the 114th year of the declaration of the Philippine Independence, the 62nd an-niversary of Cagayan de Oro as a Charter City and the 151st birth anniversary of Dr. Jose P. THINK a minute.A famous professor from

Harvard University did a study in a primary school.

At the beginning of the school year the teachers were given the names of 5 children.

The teachers were told that these 5 were the best students in the class. But the fact was that these students were only average.

Well, guess what? By the end of the year all 5 average students scored among the highest in the class. They even gained 15-30 I.Q. points!

So what made those aver-age students change so much to become top students?

The only difference was the change in the teachers’ attitudes.

Since the teachers be-lieved that these five kids were the top students, they expected more from them

Expect the best

and treated them with more respect.

So these 5 average stu-dents began to believe and expect more from them-selves, just by the way the teachers viewed and treated them.

You know, if you expect the best from people, they’ll usually want to give you their best.

A great leader said: “Treat a person just how he appears to be on the outside, and you’ll make him even worse. But treat a person like he’s already a success,

and you’ll help make him the best he can be.”

It reminds me of the true story of seven-year-old Johnny.

His school teacher got so tired of him one day she said: “Johnny, you’re the naughtiest boy in this class! Besides that, you’re the dumbest!”

The next year Johnny had a different teacher.

After the first day of class, his new teacher met with him.

She said: “Johnny, I’ve heard a lot about you!”

Then she smiled and said to him: “But I don’t believe a word of it!”

From the beginning, Johnny’s new teacher treated him as if he was one of the smartest, best behaved stu-dents. Well, you guessed it.

After just a few months, Johnny became one of the top students in that class. Later on he was made a school prefect and leader!

That’s the power of our love, belief, and encouraging attitude toward our children.

You see, that’s how God loves and believes in you and the abilities He gave you.

So won’t you ask Jesus Christ to take charge of your life today, and every day of your life?

He’s the One Who will help you become your best.

He’ll also help you to love and expect the best from others.

THE adoption of K+12 program of the Department of Education (DepEd) is a product of ‘thinking without know-ing.’ Does it sound ridiculous? Yes, it does! Indeed, it is unimaginable for education technocrats to ‘think with-out knowing’ programs that benefit only their daydreams. While these ‘think tanks’ believe that K+12 will upgrade the educational system, its result is actually dismal to the entire educational system.

Education Secretary Armin Luistro is the only person who believed in K+12. He wants to impress President Aquino that he is an asset to this administration. Bull! The truth is Luistro is no better than other ‘sipsips’ (stooge) of this administration. He wants to tell Aquino that he is better than the rest of the education Secretaries that this government ever have had. Thus, in his efforts for Aquino to give him preferential treatment, he (Luistro) conceptualized K+12. In addition, here is an administra-tion that only ‘approved’ ‘without thinking’ to stooges. One cannot blame Aquino ‘though. The President wants to assure his men that he will always be at their side –even if the benefit of the common good is at stake. This illustrates the adoption of Luistro’s K+12 projects.

Why adopt K+12 and add burden to the impoverished nation? Luistro contended that the Philippines is the only country in Asia left behind in terms education. He argued that all other countries in Asia already adopted the K+12 programs in their education system. ‘It is time

for the Philippines to be at par with other Asian nations, it is time to adopt K+12,’ Luistro said in defense of his brainchild K+12 projects. ‘Paghilom! Ga lamlam ka lang.’ (Quite! You (Luistro) are just gibbering).

Who told you Luistro that the Philippines is the only country left behind by other Asian countries in educa-tion? Hey, this education Secretary does know what he is talking. Okay, Mr. Luistro, as a refresher, ‘the Philippines is the only English speaking country in Asia.’ Tell us, Mr. Luistro, if being the only English speaking country in Asia (perfect grammar and spelling) would mean behind other Asian countries. How could ‘brain drain’ be a problem in a country with a substandard education? Mr. Luistro is dreaming! This education Secretary is not a Filipino. Maybe, he came from Timbukto, the birthplace of Nixau.

Mr. Luistro, we could advance the country’s education without adopting K+12. A viable approach is for public schools to hire competent technical teachers to improve the existing curriculum. For instance, kindergarten pu-pils could learn the basic in computer and technology subjects until reaching the Grade 4. At Grade 5, these pupils would decide on areas interesting to them. If a pupil would go for computer then he would now learn to operate the basic of computer. If he would decide on automotive, then he or she would learn details of the machine and probably driving and road courtesy. These subjects should be under the curriculum of ‘home economics and livelihood education’ that, at this time, are useless. Another useless curriculum is the Optional Subject from Grade 1 to Grade 6. Mr. Luistro, your K+12 is only good in Timbukto. React: [email protected]

THE most difficult thing is to instill the intellectual culture in the intellectuals’ mind. Yet, IAMURE (In-ternational Association for Multidisciplinary Research) has practiced this effort. The birth of this intellectual organization was in its first conference, held in Cagayan de Oro City, exactly on Au-gust 17-20, 2011. At this time IAMURE members had themselves appointed.

Culture of having research habit among the members has been developing since then. With the brilliant master thinker, Dr. Genaro V. Japos, IAMURE has undergone tremendous progress. Conferences have been conducted involving member countries in its intellectual activities. Not only has IAMURE improved its management and leadership styles but also the quality of its research and publication.

Some of its journals have been issued and some writ-

ers have come up: the experienced writers and the new comers. This expresses the advancement of research culture habits among the members in IAMURE. This also reflects that IAMURE is a sustainable intellectual organization. It has its conferences and publications in different places and years.

The most recent conference was held in Kuala Lum-pur, exactly on May 28-30, 2012. It was co- hosted by UCSI, Malaysia and STIE Perbanas Surabaya, Indonesia with the key people from Philippines. It gave some new awards to the members who have passed the qualifica-tion selection by the team of the judges. Some awards were awarded to the winners.

The outstanding researchers of Malaysia, the host country of conference were Associate Prof. Dr. Keoy Kay Hooi, Alan, from UCSI, Malaysia and Associate Prof. Dr. Asmah Laili Yeon, from University Utara Malaysia, Kedah, Malaysia. These two outstanding were presents and awarded by the IAMURE president, Dr. Genaro V. Japos, from Philippines.

Next were the outstanding Asian research Leaders: Prof. Dr. Tatik Suryani and Prof. Dr. Romanus Wilopo both from STIE Perbanas Surabaya, Indonesia.

L-R: Gulayan sa Paaralan Focal Persons from LGUs and School Divisions in Region 10 attends during the Briefing and Orientation on Gulayan sa Paaralan Project for CY 2012; Department of Agriculture-10 Crops Division OIC Chief Janen T. it at home to ensure sustainability. The meeting tackled on the amended guide-lines of the implemen-tation as stipulated in Executive Order No. 15, series of 2011; criteria and composit ion of evaluators for the best school garden contest; status and accomplish-ments for the 2011 ben-eficiaries of the project; and the 2012 target ben-eficiaries. The five-year program aims to cover 42,076 school gardens by 2016. As of writing, 574 beneficiary schools are confirmed to have benefited from the proj-ect in Region 10, while the other 342 is yet to be confirmed by the provinces of Bukidnon and Misamis Oriental. Meanwhile, for 2012 it is expected that 650 schools in the region will benefit from the project by receiving vegetable seeds and plant ing mater ia l s . Focal persons in each schools and districts will also undergo train-ing prior to implemen-tation of the program. Furthermore, the re-cipients of the project

are also encouraged to establish their own seed banking facility to sustain the implemen-tation of the project and since it’s also one of the criteria for the district level search for best school garden contest. A re pre s e nt at ive from the DepEd Di-vision of Misamis Oc-cidental raised an issue that there are second-ary schools identified as beneficiary of the program where agri-culture is not even of-fered as a subject and normally takes most

of the extra time of students. DA-10 Crops Division OIC Chief Janen T. Paradero said that there should be a written documenta-tion submitted to the higher management so that they can hear it out and find ways to address it to make the implementation better. Meanwhile, another representat ive f rom DepEd also said that if the school head has the will to implement the program whether it is part of the curriculum or not, then he would find a way to address

the issue. Regional Reports Officer for Agri-Pinoy Gulayan sa Paaralan Gleen A. Janubas an-nounced that the De-partment of Agricul-ture will also distribute 5 kilos of worms and vermi bed for each of the 316 benef iciar y school from CY 2011 and 400 schools for CY 2012 beneficiaries in the region. Training will also be conducted prior to the distribu-tion of materials for vermiculture. It has been agreed during the meeting that focal

persons should dissem-inate the information to the heads of target school beneficiaries so that they could prepare the area intended for the project. Moreover, to continually moni-tor the development of the project focal persons are also tasked to submit a monthly report with regard to the distribution of in-puts and production data of existing gardens every end of the month to DA- Regional Field Office 10.# (VANESSA MAE S. for extortion activities and kidnappings and ter-rorism in Basilan.

Just last week, Isabela City Vice Mayor Abdulbaki Ajibon narrowly escaped a motorcycle bomb explo-sion in Basilan, one of five provinces under the Muslim autonomous region.

Police said the explosion occurred minutes after the politician’s convoy passed. Ajibon said he was the target of the attack.

The motorcycle was parked near the house of Isabela City Mayor Cher-ryln Akbar, whose husband Basilan Congressman Wa-hab Akbar, was killed in a 2007 motorcycle bomb attack outside the House of Representatives in Manila.

Police said the bomb was placed inside the tool box of the motorcycle which was parked on the side of the road. No individual claimed responsibility for the blast.

are bitter enemies have a peace deal Tuesday, ending long years of feud and legal battles.

Governors Mujiv Hata-man, of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mind-anao, and Jum Akbar, of Basilan province, agreed to end their political feud in a ceremony held attended by hundreds of supporters from both sides in Isabela City.

Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo and Presidential

peace adviser Teresita Deles and three other provincial governors – Sakur Tan, of Sulu; Sadikul Sahali, of Tawi-Tawi; and Mamintal Adiong, Jr. of Lanao del Sur - were also present during the peace pact initiated by Muslim religious leaders in Basilan.

“We are glad that peace has been achieved between two families,” said Tan, an influential politician, who are also closed to both Akbar and Hataman.

Akbar is the wife of Basi-lan Congressman Wahab Akbar who was among 4 people killed in a motorcycle bomb explosion outside the House of Representatives in 2007.

Akbar’s family impli-cated Hataman and for-mer Basilan governor Ab-dulgani Salapuddin, and other politicians as behind the attack. Hataman and Salapuddin, who is now in hiding, strongly denied all accusations against them.

The feud began after Hataman, who was then an aide to Basilan Congressman Wahab Akbar, split with the politician to support his brother Jim Hataman, who is now a congressman. (Mindanao Examiner)
