Pentair is already established in the US, Brazil, Mexico, Germanyand France, but new facilities in Poland and India have led toreduced delivery times to the Middle East. The company plans toopen further manufacturing facilities within the Middle East duringthe coming years.

WESTERN GLOBAL HAS used MiddleEast Electricity to herald its new soleagent within the region, AAAConstruction Equipment, and to displayits regionally-tailored fuel filtrationtransfer pod systems.

“They have a direct sales team that arewell-trained and professional, theirsupport services are fantastic, and theyhave the reputation and customer basein the UAE,” John White, Western Global’sExport Sales Manager, said of thecompany’s newly-approved distributor.“They already supply everyone that wewould consider a target customer, so itwas really a natural decision.”

Western Global’s relationship with AAAwill also enable access to the UAE’s oiland gas companies.

“It would be pretty time-consuming topenetrate that market and the goodthing is that AAA is already active in thatmarket,” said White. “So the route to thatmarket is wide open for us.”

Western Global is also showcasing itsnew range of three fuel filtration transferpod systems. The Western Transfer Pod

has been comprehensively overhauledfor the regional market.

“Many products that work fine inEurope have a lot of reliability problemsover here because operating ambienttemperatures are 50°C plus,” said White.“The fuel filtration unit is also workingreally hard because of the poor qualityof the fuel. So we increased the qualityand the capacity of all of the componentparts of the fuel filtration system.”

Western has already seen orders for thenew Transfer Pod range flood in from theMiddle East, with units being deployedin places like Oman and Yemen.

“What really counts out here isreliability and we got it right,” said White.“As a result, our name and our brand isgetting bigger and people associate itwith good quality.”

Founded in 1991 as a non-profit educational organisation, the mission of Solar Energy International (SEI) is 'to empowerpeople around the world through the education of sustainable practices'. The organisation's Technical Director, Kris Sutton,is leading today's Solar Middle East Workshop and spoke to MEE Daily about the increasing role of solar in the region'senergy mix, the rising output of modern solar systems, and reveals what attendees can expect from today's workshop.

MEE DAILY: Please can you give us a briefoverview of what Solar Energy International isand the work that the organisation does?

KRIS SUTTON: Solar Energy International(SEI) is a renewable energy technical trainingcompany based in Colorado, USA. SEI is anon-pro!t educational organisation with amission to provide technical training andexpertise in renewable energy to empowerpeople, communities and businessesworldwide. Founded in 1991, we havetrained over 35,000 alumni in renewableenergy worldwide. We teach classes variousrenewable technologies although ourprimary focus is solar electric or photovoltaic(PV) system technology.

MEE DAILY: As the technical director of SEIand 'trainer of trainers' what can people expectto learn from you during today's workshop?

KRIS SUTTON: SEI is known for its practicalsolar training and we pride ourselves onhaving experts with extensive real-worldexperience. We focus on how to design, install, and maintain systems for maximumsystem performance. Personally, I have been working full time inthe PV industry since 1999, with nearly 15years in this industry. My focus is on PVapplications, technology, design andinstallation best practices. I have a mix ofexperience between battery-based o#-grid,grid-connected with battery-backup, as wellas residential, commercial and utility-scalegrid-connected power systems.

MEE DAILY: What do you hope people thatattend the workshop will take away with themor do with the information you give them?

KRIS SUTTON: I hope that everyone thatattends the workshop will leave with a betterunderstanding of applications, capabilitiesand limitations of solar electric power

systems. The training is designed for peoplewho are engineering, designing, installingand troubleshooting PV systems.

MEE DAILY: Solar power seems like an 'easyenergy option' within the Middle East region. Isthis really the case and what are the challengesthat need to be overcome to better utilise whatappears to be a plentiful energy resource?

KRIS SUTTON: Yes, solar power is plentifulin the Middle East and most of the world. Itis of course the most abundant source ofenergy on our planet. The limitations arescale, cost, storage, market and knowledge. On scale, every year the size of systems andthe scale of solar gets bigger. Fifteen yearsago, 10 kW was a huge PV system. Ten yearsago, 100 kW was a big system, now 5-50MW PV systems are normal and gigawattsof solar are common discussions. Costs ofsolar are reducing at a rate far quicker thanmost people have ever expected, and solaris now cost e#ective against fossil fuel inmany markets around the world. The solarmarket has the capability of high levels ofgrid penetration without energy storage, but at a certain level energy storage will bea requirement for continued growth. This isknown to the solar industry, the utilities andthe energy storage industry. The batteryand storage industry are moving at recordpace trying to develop and deploy large-scale energy storage systems to handle thefuture growth of solar and otherrenewables. The cost of energy storage inlarge-scale applications still remains hightoday, although these prices are rapidlydecreasing and technology is improving atrecord paces. Last but not least isknowledge. That's where SEl comes in. Asan organisation SEI works hard day in andday out to teach people how to properlydesign and install PV systems for the rapidgrowth and deployment of solartechnology.

MEE DAILY: While there are ambitious plansin place to increase the role solar power playswithin the region's energy mix in certainplaces like Saudi Arabia and Qatar, do youbelieve that the region is fully embracing solaras an energy option?

KRIS SUTTON: Yes and no. Yes, because thediscussion has begun, there is e#ort andmomentum in the direction of embracingsolar as part of the energy mix. It is achallenge for oil rich nations to fully embracesolar due to their low costs of energy. So thefact that the region is starting to look to solaras a future energy supply is forward thinking, and that's a great start. When the economyof the region is based in abundant oil, it'schallenging to push a higher cost alternative,so I don't fault the region for not beingfurther ahead based on the situation. Solarhas been expensive, and although it's pricesare dropping rapidly competing directlywith oil is still a !nancial challenge. Give it afew more years and it could be a di#erentdiscussion.

MEE DAILY: Do you see solar energy as beingTHE answer to spiralling energy demandwithin the Middle East or just as a vital part ofan energy mix that includes nuclear and fossil-based power?

KRIS SUTTON: Well, on the spirallingdemand question, the demand for energy isa combination of issues. One is the rapidgrowth of the region - more people, morebuildings, more air conditioning, moredemand. The other issue that I see in certainareas at least is the fact that the prices forenergy are highly subsidised. And whenconsumers don't pay the true price forenergy, there is less interest in conservationof energy. It's hard to get people to use lessenergy when it costs them so little. When ithurts your bank account people will changetheir habits.I am personally a !rm believer in a 100 percent renewable energy end game. But I'malso very technical and practical. I know full

INTERVIEW/SHOW NEWS

SDMO HAS LAUNCHED two new generating set models at Middle East Electricitythis year.

The K27 generating set features a maximum power of 27 kVA and a new engine manufactured by Kohlar. Philippe Forest, Communications DepartmentManager for SDMO, described the product as “very compact, inexpensive and easyto use”.

The model is being exhibited for the first time at MEE 2014 alongside anotherdebutant – the GZ60 generating set.

Targeting markets in Africa, the Middle East and Russia, the GZ60 has a gas engine, rather than a more traditional gasoline engine, and can use either natural gas orLPG as fuel.

Alongside these two machines, the company has also been exhibiting the R1650Cgenerating set, which features a special cooling system and has been designed tocope well with the region’s arid weather conditions, as well as a model from thecompany’s popular Rental Power Compact range, launched in the Middle Eastearlier this year.

Speaking about the French manufacturer’s participation in the 39th edition ofMiddle East Electricity, Forest remarked, “It has proven to be a very dynamic show.

“We get to see a lot of our competitors, suppliers and distributors, and it is greatto see that after all these years it’s still a very good show.”

Layer Electronics brings Italian style to MEE 2014well that solar is not able to replace allother sources of generation over night, and though the cost of energyproduction is dropping quickly, we needstorage and smart grid management tofollow along. For a little while longer itwill require a mix of energy sources, untilwe can get massive energy storage andsmart grid management techniquesdeployed to compliment solar energyproduction.

MEE DAILY: How do you perceive thefuture of the solar energy industry in theregion and what role do you see SEIplaying?

KRIS SUTTON: I perceive the future ofthe solar industry to continue to growinto a robust market in the region. SEIprovides not only solar training, but thirdparty services (consisting of designreview, commissioning, andtroubleshooting) for developers andsystem owners, which are invaluableespecially within an emerging market.SEI's role in that market growth is up tothe local industry. We only go where weare invited. We have been developingrelationships with local business andgovernments who continue to ask us fortraining assistance and third partyassistance. We hope to have a long termrole in the development of the solarmarket in the region. If we can be oftechnical assistance we are happy to help.

INSTALLING OPTIMUM LIGHTING canensure the commercial success of amodern residential development or

refurbishment. Luminaire fixtures andfittings, their controls and their locationsshould all be designed to complementthe lifestyles of potential occupants. When planning the wiring, switches andaccess points developers need to beable to predict what activities will betaking place where, and when.

Food preparation and study, forexample, need better and moreintensified illumination than leisure andentertainment activities. The impact onnatural light of door and windowopenings should be remembered, butthe choice of furnishing fabrics andother colour schemes/decorativefeatures should always be left to thepurchasers or tenants. When in doubt, the services of a lighting specialist canbe sought, as now employed by someequipment suppliers in the Gulf. He orshe will always take into account theavailability or otherwise of naturaldaylight.

A good specialist will start out byasking what the customer wants thelighting fixtures and fittings to achieve, expecting a different answer fordifferent positions within thedevelopment. The different types oflighting are usually described as ‘generalbackground’, ‘task orientated’ and ‘mood’.

General lighting, usually but notalways centrally placed and fixedoverhead, provides overall illuminationwithout any troubling and distractingglare, and is suitable for all members ofthe household. It provides comfort andsafety whenever natural illumination isinadequate, and can provide animpressive ‘wow’ factor, as displayed inthe entrance halls of many Gulf hotels.Usually left on for extended periods oftime, even permanently, and thereforeideally suited to non-incandescentlamps, it is often designed to besupplemented with smaller localisedappliances that provide focusedillumination for specific tasks as andwhen required.

Functional task-orientated illuminationis designed to be switched on and off asrequired, allowing the occupants tocarry out physical activities such asplaying, reading, writing or hobbycraftwork. There are many specific typesof fitting available, some of thesedesigned to be permanently attachedand others moveable around the room,or even the entire residence. The qualityof such task lighting is important, andsome of the latest LED and compactfluorescent devices provide an excellentmatch with natural daylight.

The important thing with task lightingis to avoid shadows and distracting glarewithout losing readability. Generally the

older the users are, the more importantthe location and quality of this type oflighting is.

Finally there is mood lighting, called‘accent’ in North America. Oftenprovided in the form of a wall-mountedfitting or recess, this is designed tocreate a lasting and appropriateimpression once the space is entered,

even sometimes to invite people in, as ina hospitality suite. It can be used tocreate a specific mood – sometimesenhanced by recorded music or othermeans – and, when well designed, willdraw the occupants’ attention to adecorative features such as artwork, anoutside view or a public speaker.

Middle East Electricity is once againproviding visitors with the opportunityto investigate the information andservices offered by the world’sspecialised lighting industry tradeassociations. Whatever the combinationof types of illumination chosen, thesources of light supplied should beadequately matched to purpose. Theirinstallation needs to be designed interms of the amount of power they

Modern illumination can transform the sales or rentalprospects of a modern development. Designers andcontractors come from all over the world to checkthe latest trends and innovations at MEE.

Energy efficient light sources likefluorescents and LEDs are universallyapproved by energy specialists, both interms of power consumption and thelife of the devices themselves, and byutility companies – but in some‘ambience’ circumstances the warmglow of a traditional incandescent canstill hit the right note. Various add-onreflective treatments can be used toboost the energy efficiency of these.

A good lighting designer will considerthe frequency and difficulty of fittingnew and replacement sources, as well asautomated controls that sensemovement and switch themselves offwhen the luminaire is not in use.

Research in various countries hasshown that up to one-tenth of theelectricity used in a modern home canbe used to energise lighting circuitsalone. Power is an increasingly scarceresource everywhere, especially nowthat so many older generating stationsare having to be retired. Choosing theright fixtures and fittings can make a bigdifference to the load placed on yourlocal utility; the lighting section of MEEis the best place to see the widestselection available anywhere today.
