steve nicholls, President – middle East& africa, Emerson Industrial automation, said “We have escalated our presence atmEE over the last four or five years and, forus, this show is one of the best in themarketplace.”

“I think we have a very strong messagein terms of sustainability and if you go toeach of the products on our booth atmEE, you will see that we’re talking aboutthe ways and means of saving energy onthe equipment that customers arepurchasing. We have varying degrees ofenergy efficient motors here and we haveways of modulating and controlling thespeed of the motor to our customers’needs. We can regulate that speed downwhile maintaining the same motorefficiency and motor operation in termsof torque, while still saving significantamounts of energy.”

nicholls stated that the messageregarding sustainability was getting outinto the market with cost consumptionplaying a key role in influencing peoples’mindsets.

“I think people are starting to stand upand listen,” he said. “some of the [moresustainable] products come with a higherinitial capital cost, but when you look atthe cost of the total life cycle of theproduct, it means bigger savings forcustomers and you end up improving onenergy utilisation.”

Vahid Fotuhi will be taking part in the opening panel session of today's Solar Middle East Conference, entitled‘Harnessing the vision, leadership and investment driving the region’s solar power and renewable energy researchand development’. Having held senior positions at Energy Intelligence, World Economic Forum and TransparencyInternational, Fotuhi went on to be regional director for BP Solar Middle East from 2009 to 2012. He is now presidentof the Middle East Solar Industry Association, the largest solar trade organisation in the MENA region.

MEE DAILY: How has the MENA solarmarket developed in the last 12-18months?

VAHID FOTUHI: We have seensignificant growth in the mEna solarmarket over the past year. In the uaE,masdar set the bar very high bylaunching shams 1, the largest solar csPproject of its kind in the world.meanwhile in dubai the governmentcommissioned Phase 1 of their solar1,000mW solar programme in october2013 and in a few short months they willlaunch the tender for Phase 2; a 100mWsolar PV IPP project. It will be the largest solar PV facility of itskind in the mEna region whencompleted. In saudi arabia, K.a.carE[King abdullah city for atomic andrenewable Energy] issued its WhitePaper which sets the foundation for howthe Kingdom’s 41,000mW solar marketwill take shape in the next 20 years. In Jordan, we witnessed the governmentapprove an attractive feed-in-tariff for aset of projects totalling 170mW whichwill be finalised as part of Phase 1 ofJordan’s solar programme. and just a fewweeks ago they closed the initial phasefor round 2 which will be roughly200mW. We are also seeing good progress inQatar, Kuwait, turkey and morocco. thewhole region is sizzling with activity andwe are thrilled to see solar finally take offin the middle East.

MEE DAILY: What are the latestdevelopments in the global supply chainfor photovoltaics?

VAHID FOTUHI: We have seen themarket for solar PV panels stabilise. thedays of plummeting solar panel prices

are long gone. What we see now is stableprices being offered by a set of provenand world-class module providers suchas First solar, trina solar, canadian solarand Yingli solar.this has provided end-users andinvestors with a level of assurance thatwas not there in the past. this improvedreliability has enabled solar solutions tobecome more bankable. on the balanceof system side we see a lot of innovation,be it with micro-inverters provided bythe likes of Petra solar or throughautomated installation and cleaningsystems provided by alion Energy. In fact, we are seeing a lot more activityin automated cleaning solutions with anumber of high profile investments inthis space, notably by sunPower. as awhole, solar systems are becoming morereliable, more efficient and morebankable.

MEE DAILY: Should the Middle Eastregion manufacture their own PVs andsystems to support the solar sector andfulfil its destiny as the world’s leading solarpower exporter?

VAHID FOTUHI: I have no doubt thatthe middle East solar market will becomelarge enough to warrant a ‘home-grown’solar solution, from solar panelmanufacturing to system installation andmaintenance. this will be an evolutionaryprocess. It will not happen overnight. the key will be to establish a sound andstable regulatory framework. If investorshave confidence in the long-term growthof the market then they will deploy thenecessary funds to manufacture locally. the best way for local governments to fanthis confidence is to put in place soundlegislation that outlines how much solarcapacity will be deployed, by whom, and

in what format. once this is establishedeverything else will fall in place.

MEE DAILY: What are the latestdevelopments within the Middle East SolarIndustry Association?

VAHID FOTUHI: the goal of mEsIa is tosupport the growth of the solar industryacross the middle East. We do this byorganising events which aim to raiseawareness and bring the stakeholderstogether. We also cultivate innovationthrough our solar Pioneers programmewhich identifies and champions the topten brightest minds in the mEna solarindustry. We provide thought leadership throughperiodic publications; our latest one, produced in partnership with mEEdInsights, provides an in-depth overviewof the solar markets in 15 countriesacross the middle East. at mEsIa, werepresent companies and organisationsfrom the entire solar value chain and wework hard to make sure that everyonehas a voice. this is achieved through our monthlynewsletters, quarterly breakfast briefings, and annual general meeting which takesplace in march. our rapid growth and oursuccess would not be possible had it notbeen for our 15 founding members andour 130 corporate members. I am absolutely thrilled by the growth wehave achieved in the past five years andI’m confident that the best is yet to come.

‘‘Worldwide export constitutes 55 countries, where our profile includes construction, sub-contracting and we wish to continuethis way.’’

talking about finished copper products, arthit Prathumpuang, area sales manager, dubai, added that they related to switchboards, power distribution, power generator, locomotive industries and even for medium voltage systems.

according to comini, oriental copper is the only approved manufacturer from companies from Japan. toshiba, mitsubishi are fewof the clients of the thai company.

thai company oriental copper has been reportedly contracted for nuclear power plants in Japan. With regards to new projects, the company has been contracted for a power plant project in Indonesia. ‘‘this means that such is

the quality of our product that it is being approved for such difficult projects. and this gives us a sense of satisfaction.’’the middle East market for the company is based on tin-plated products. the region is a big market in terms of consumption. oriental copper, in 2013, had received two orders of more than 7,500 metric tonnes of tin-plated products. ‘‘our market share in

WItH onE oF the world’s fastestgrowing economies, Qatar’spower sector is expected to see

strong growth over the coming years, one contributing factor being theupcoming FIFa World cup in 2022.

Between 2000 and 2010, Qatar'selectricity consumption rose from anestimated 8bn kilowatt hours to 20.5bnkilowatt hours. still on the rise, Qatar'sminister of energy and industry revealedthat electricity consumption in 2012grew by a further 13 per cent. In that yearQatar’s installed capacity of 8,761mWwas able to deal with the peak usage of6,255mW, despite power demand growthrising above 10 per cent over the pastfive years.

“current indications in our strategic andtechnical planning show that in the nextfive years, there will be a need foradditional capacity – with huge schemesplanned everywhere – particularly inpreparation for the [FIFa 2022] Worldcup. For the past three years, many of theprojects were in the planning stage, butnow we are seeing them start, includingport and metro schemes and manyothers,” said

Qatar General Electricity and Watercorporation (Kahramaa) technicaldirector, ahmed al-naser.

Experts have identified factors which will

trigger the surge in demand for electricityover the next decade and those includegovernment spending, strong economicgrowth and a rising population.

the country’s current generatingcapacity is natural gas-fired and althoughthere is no coal-based or nuclear-basedgenerating capacity, the Qatarigovernment has begun implementingplans to roll out solar power projectsacross the country to meet the increasingdemand for electricity.

“the country has witnessed a steadyincrease in population in the past fewyears, and this has led to an increase indemand on power and water," said thehead of Qatar’s administrative andtransparency agency, abdallah benHamad al atia.

"We have also set a target of producing1,800 mW [of clean power] by 2020," alatia added.

Qatar’s growing population isdependent on air-conditioning in homesand offices because of the country’sextremely hot climate, making air-conditioning systems (acs) the singlebiggest source of electricity consumption.

Government plans are expected to seea ban imposed on conventional(incandescent) light bulbs and old tubesor otherwise a huge reduction in theiruse as they have been recorded to

consume more electricity. around 90 percent of the energy incandescent lightsemit results in heat, and only about 10per cent transmits light. then alternativeuse of fluorescent light bulbs and tubeswill be encouraged as they consume 20to 40 percent less electricity, sourceshave revealed.

Qatar General Electricity and Watercorporation (Kahramaa) announced backin February 2013 that it will makeinvestments worth us$22bn in thecountry’s power and water infrastructure.the new upgrades will include the rollout of 140 electricity substations as wellas more than 2,000mW of capacity over afive-year period. In line with these plans,in october last year the government alsorevealed it was planning to construct a

huge us$3bn power plant known as raslaffan d.

doha-based Qatar General Electricityand Water corporation (Kahramaa) isnow working alongside the ministry ofEnvironment to outline the newspecifications to ensure that acs used inthe country are equipped with high-efficiency compressors with heattransfer surfaces, in an attempt to saveelectricity which is available to nationalsfree of charge, however only subsidisedfor expatriates.

despite rising electricity demand, Qatarhad a recorded surplus generatingcapacity of approximately 2.5GW, ornearly 30 per cent, in 2012. althoughthere is a rising demand for electricity inthe country, Qatar is seeking to exportelectricity through the Gulf co-operationcouncil Interconnection authority(GccIa) power grid, with countries in themiddle East such as Bahrain and Kuwaitshowing interest in importing liquefiednatural gas (lnG) to meet demands. thecountry is currently the largest exporterof liquefied natural gas (lnG) in theworld, in which the energy sourceaccounts for a considerable portion ofgovernment revenues. the largestexporter of lnG in the world since 2006,Qatar ships nearly 85 per cent of itsnatural gas as liquefied natural gas (lnG)to other countries for electricitygeneration. the country has to dateinvested more than us$8bn to expand itstransmission and distribution networks, with several power and water projects inthe pipeline commencing between 2012and 2015 at an estimated total ofus$4.1bn.

Qatar expects to see a huge rise in the demand for electricity over the next five years.

Qatar is faced with a rising demand in energy asexperts predict electricity needs will increase by10 per cent annually over the next five years.

“BEama has been running a programmefor around 13 years primarily because, particularly in the circuit breaker market andrelated areas, there were a number of the big

counterfeiter doesn’t actually put all of theparts into the machine that they should,” saidPotter. “these products are meant to besafety products. If you have a fault, andparticularly with the less robust electricalsystems that you may have in areas wherethe power supply isn’t as consistent, youreally need these products. sometimes inthese sorts of projects we talk a lot about theproject and raiding, but ultimately it’s aboutthe protection of business and actuallykeeping people safe.”

THE IEA SAID in its most recent WorldEnergy Outlook (WEO) factsheet thatglobal electricity consumption will

increase by two-thirds or more by 2035. Thisis against the current backdrop of powersupplies that are dwindling relative todemand and the infrastructure that isageing fast.

The Gulf states are central to the IEAreasoned ‘new policies’ case (a scenario inWEO that takes into account broad policycommitments and plans that have beenannounced by countries) for matching

supply with demand, and doing so withoutharming the environment. The agencypoints out that which power plants are runto meet demand typically depends on theirvariable costs. There are basically two typesof local power market, fully liberalised andfully regulated, with many in between. These determine both how prices andnecessary investment evolve.

Global electricity consumption nearlydoubled between 1990 and 2011, and by2035 demand is expected to grow morethan for any other form of energy, with

electricity use strongly linked to economicgrowth. The nature and extent ofgovernment interventions, such asefficiency drives, is critical in determiningthe actual level of consumption.

“Without any change in electricityintensity with respect to the last fiveyears, world electricity demand wouldrise to 43,100 TWh in 2035," the IEA saidin the WEO report. "In the ‘new policies’scenario it is lower by about one-quarter.Energy efficiency is the main driver ofthis difference.”

Under its ‘reasoned and reasonable’scenario it maintains that industry will holdon to its position as the largest consumerof power through 2035, accounting for 41per cent of total demand by that time. Butusage in the domestic (residential) sectoris expected to expand by 2.5 per cent eachyear, much faster than population growth.

By 2030, 970mn people are expected tohave no access to mains power comparedwith 1.2bn in 2011. The non-OECDcountries will account for by far thegreater part of this incremental demand. And by 2035, despite a variety oftechnological developments, transportwill still only account for just over two percent of demand.

How supply will develop to meet thisdemand will vary by region according toindividual government policies and thetype and level of competition betweenthe different types of power generation, including renewables. Relativeinvestment costs and fuel prices arecentral to this outcome. Under ‘newpolicies’ global generation is expected toreach almost 37,100 TWh by 2035, withfossil-fuels technologies declining from68 per cent to 57 per cent, with the powermix itself changing and "renewables as agroup accounting for almost half of theincrease in global electricity generationover 2011-2035".

The IEA went on to say, “The evolution ofthe power mix in OECD countries ismarkedly different from that in non-OECDcountries. In absolute terms the secondlargest increase in non-OECD generation

The region’s gas will be increasingly vital tomaintaining supplies, according to theInternational Energy Agency

Managing the globalpower surge

l Electricity demand grows more than that for any otherfinal form of energy through to 2035. Industry, domesticsand air conditioning are the main drivers.

l Non-OECD countries account for most of the increase, led by China and India (almost one half ). The Middle Eastwill account for six per cent.

l Global generating capacity will increase from 5,649GW in2012 to around 9,760GW in 2035. About 60% of energycapacity 'retirements’ (1,940GW in total) will be in thetraditional industrialised countries.

l Coal will remain the principal fuel in thermal plants, one-third of the total in 2035, almost the same as all-forms ofrenewables. Worldwide, gas’s share will hold steady.

l Transmission and distribution (T&D) line lengths, the

often overlooked component of electrification, willincrease from 69mn km to 94mn. By 2035, around one-half of today’s grid infrastructure will have reached 40years of age, necessitating major investments inrefurbishment.

l Cumulative global investment in the power sector is ex-pected to be US$17 trillion between 2012 and 2035, withnew generating plants accounting for 58 per cent. T&Dnetworks will account for the rest.

l Prices are certain to rise in most regions, but with in-creasingly significant country-by-country differences. By2035 US industrial electricity prices will be 40% lowerthan in China; this is already proving to be a contentiousissue in both Japan and the EU.

from a single-energy source comes fromgas, primarily in the Middle East, Chinaand India.”

The relative costs of generation vary byfuel used, with total (fixed plus variable)generating costs for each technologydiffering widely across the world. For bothnuclear plants and most renewables, thecapital element is the most significant.

As well as varying construction times (lessthan two years for open-cycle gas turbines)the IEA notes that the expected lifetimes ofdifferent types of plant vary widely too; 40years for gas plants compared to just 20 forsolar PV. The age of plant used for baseload

generation in the Gulf is much lower thanin the OECD, and most new plant isbrought on line to meet previouslyunserved demand.

Gas- and oil-fuelled generation remainthe backbone of power supply in theMENA region. According to the IEA, globaloutput from gas plants will rise from 4,847TWh in 2011 to 8,310 TWh in 2035, eventhough its share of the total will remainconstant at 22%. Around 20% of thisincrement will take place here in theMiddle East, and pricing issues will befundamental.

“Despite the higher gas prices in theEuropean and Asia-Pacific markets [cf. theUS],” the agency said, “gas-fired generation

still has characteristics that make it anattractive option relative to thealternatives, notably lower capital costs, shorter construction times, greateroperational flexibility and lower emissions.”

Globally oil-fired plant is projected tocontinue to decline, from 1,062 TWh to lessthan 560. Oil remains fundamental here, but elsewhere this fuel is increasinglyconsigned to a marginal role as anemergency back-up.

By 2035, the IEA predicts, the Middle Eastwill account for almost one-half ofworldwide oil-fired power generation,“because of the assumed persistence offuel price subsidies in several countries andstrong electricity demand growth”.
