Microsoft Services Provider Licensing Model

The Microsoft software products included in the program are available for licensing through two models:

• Subscriber Access License (SAL)• Per Processor License (PL)

Flexibility• For products that can be licensed in either PL or SAL, the service

provider can switch licensing mode from one month to another.

Note: as of today only Windows Server and SQL Server are available in both license models

Subscriber Access License (SAL)

• A SAL is generally required for each unique individual who is authorized to use the software in any given month

• Not all products are available to be licensed in the SAL mode

• Benefits of the Per Subscriber model include: – Subscribers can access any

number of servers– Service providers have minimal

start-up costs

SPLA Model

Per Processor License (PL)

• An unlimited number of end users can use the software running on a single CPU for each processor license acquired

• Some products are not available to be licensed in the PL mode

• Benefits of the Processor License Model include: – Processor licenses are easier to

monitor and count– Processor licenses replace Internet

Connector licenses
