Letters to the Editor Fixing higher education Keystone pipeline and texting while driving

308 PM EST December 4 20) I

In Dean Cannons Dec 2 My Word (Constitution should be basis for fixing advertisement higher education) he wrote I wish I could say we have several of the top 10 universities in Florida but we dont have even one

But Cannon and others can be proud that Florida has two of the nations top 10 community colleges Both Valencia College and Miami-Dade College have been so recognized by the Aspen Foundation Why Because they are relentlessly focused on three non-negotiable outcomes a high bar for learning a focus on college completion and real attention to preparing their middot students for 2 I st Century jobs

On Dec 12 the Aspen Foundation witt announce its winner and runnersshyup While it would be great to land the top honor isnt it nice to know that Central Floridians have the distinct opportunity to attend a top-10 community colleges

Keith Houck Orlando

President should put Keystone pipeline on track

Last year I learned of the potential to further our countrys relationship with our largest trade partner by bringing more Canadian oil to the United States via the Keystone XL Pipeline By expanding this pipeline the US would be able to send 700000 barrels of Canadian crude a day to refineries across our country

It makes sense we would look to a trusted ally to help us meet our ever-increasing energy demands and [ was encouraged when the State Department initially gave this project the green light to move forward to the next step

That encouragement has since turned to disappointment upon learning the State Department has instead decided to further delay the pipeline

America is about to miss an opportunity to ensure we have a steady reliable source of oil while creating jobs and tax revenue along the way

Canadian officials have already indicated they will join a new Asian trade bloc in an effort to expand their energy exports and have China lined up to be on the receiving end of a pipeline carrying its valuable crude to the Pacific Ocean

The less oil the United States gets from Canada the more it will have to rely on unstable countries

While the Keystone XL Pipeline will not run through Florida Floridians and our fellow Americans all stand to benefit from its expansion hope President Obama and Secretary Clinton will reconsider this decision and put the Keystone XL Pipeline project back on track

Rocky Randels Cape Canaveral

Restrictions and attitudes fuel economic uncertainty

The Thursday article Panel Uncertainty will keep holding back areas job market speaks volumes not just about the Florida jobs market but for the nations economy Like it or not the one common factor that keeps the countrys employers and risk-takers from doing more to grow the economy is the adverse effect the presidents undeniably grudging attitude has had on them as a class It is a risk to invest hardshyearned assets in business at any level If a business venture fails there is no refund only when it succeeds does the government want any part of it It is the expressed desire of President Obama to take more from those who have risked the most and the uncertainty of how far his tentacles will reach that have done the most to stifle our economic recovery Proof of this would be supported by polling business leaders who do not unconditionally support this president

Letters to the Editor Fixing education pipeline and while dri ving OrlandoSentinelcom Page 2 of2

It is a fundamental law of economics that with greater rewards comes greater risk more from those who stand to lose the most can be argued as as deplorable as to take even a little from those who have little The poor are deceived when politicians advocate replacing the benefits of hard work in a free with government attempts at redistribution of wealth It is not the softer of life which stimulate mans will to strive but endless encouragement and freedom from needless restriction

issued a careless ticket In my opinion this isnt enough for this offense This is more needs to be done to stop this from

The punishment for a DUI is so harsh because of the the motorist driving tmder the influence is other people in Studies have shown that while driving is even more rl~middotrr then someone driving under the influence because the drivers attention is

The article one of many that could have ended a Jot worse than a sutmcrg(d in a pond We need to take a stand on making sure drivers are punished accordingly for this offense

Part-time workers have trouble finding enough hours

By Cindy Krischer Goodman McClatchy-Tribune Newspapers In Print Sunday December 4 2011

I recently m et Luis a Miami father of two young children who sits atop his lawn mower like its a throne LuiS used to be a mortgage banker but hes been out of work for more than 20 months Like others he has become frustrated with the job hunt

One day while Luis wa s mowing his lawn a neighbor offered him a few bucks to do his yard Word spread plentiful rain caused Miami lawns to grow tall and Luis now has cobbled together enough business to consider mowing lawns a part-time job

At least its some incom e said the humbled executive wh o asked me not to use his full name

Today the face of the part-time worker is drastically different from what it was only a few years ago It used to look m ore like mine a mother who wanted to better balance her work and family It might also have been the college student who needed to earn income while in school

But the recession and high unemployment have changed the once coveted status Increasingly the face of the part-time worker has become the dad j umping at any chance of income or the college graduate desperate fo r an opportunity to get a foot in the door It might be the loyal worker whose weekly hours have been cut to save the company a few bucks or the desperate former executive patch ing together jobs to pay rent

As of September about 88 million Americans are working part time while deSiring full-time work That number is double what it was in 2007 just before the recession bega n And another roughly 26 million people want work shyeven part-t ime work - but have stopped active ly looking Combined the underemployed part-timers wh o want full-time work and discouraged people who have stopped looking make up 162 percent of working-age Americans The Labor Department

Part-time workers have trouble finding enough hours

The punishment for a DUI is so harsh because of the the motorist driving tmder the influence is other people in Studies have shown that while driving is even more rl~middotrr then someone driving under the influence because the drivers attention is

On Dec 12 the Aspen Foundation witt announce its winner and runnersshyup While it would be great to land the top honor isnt it nice to know that Central Floridians have the distinct opportunity to attend a top-10 community colleges
