In hisfast-and-furious Hamlet at GableStage direcshytor-adaptor Tarell Alvin McCraney gets right down to business

William Shakespeares great tragedy and longest play doesnt begin with two Elsinshyore Castle sentinels spying the ghost of Hamlets murshydered father Instead the play opens with a magnetic Edgar Miguel Sanchez launching inshyto Hamlets famous Act 3 Scene 1 soliloquy a contemshyplation of suicide To be or not to be - that is the question

Miamian McCraney and British theater artist Bijan Sheibani crafted this adaptashytion for the Royal Shakespeare Company With its 90-minute running time and emphasis on action it was designed to apshypeal to contemporary audishyences with a well-known exshyciting story in Shakespeares words

Purists may miss the more complete character developshyment of the original The excishysion ofcharacters and speechshyes plus the editing and placeshyment ofother passages might bug Hamlet aficionados But taken on its own terms the GableStage Hamlet achieves

COLORADO SPRINGS Colo - Three deserving head coaches and one distinguished player have been tabbed for the 2013 class of the NJCAA Womens Basketball Coaches AssoCiation Hall of Fame This years class includes former Roxbury Community Colleges (Mass) head coach Alfreda HarriS current Miam Dade College (Fla ) head coach Susan Summons the NJCAAs winningest active head coach in Copiah Uncoln Community Colleges (Miss ) Gwyn Young as well as two-time All-American Kim Ortega from Seward County Community College (Kan)

S-~~ 11i I~~~I~~h~ ~~~n~i~~t ~~~~e~f~~~~~~~v~~~aecn~sD~~~i~ ~et~~a~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~ Harris Community College (Mass) to fi ve Region 21 championships while receiving league Coach of the Year honors from 1981-86 During her tenure RCC posted a 130-20 record She became the first female head coach in any sport for the University of Massachusetts - Boston (NCAA Division III) and was Inducted into the colleges Athletics Hall of Fame in 2011 She later served as the head womens basketball coach at Emerson College (NCAA Division III) A strong advocate and driving force behind athletic and academic achievements of thousands of student-athletes In the City of Boston Harris founded a SAT Preparation Program that serves high school students in Boston She also founded girls basketball leagues and AAU teams for the city as well as the Owen Wells Fitness Center and the Reebok Educational Athletic Partnership that provides students with community programs in social development computer skills and tutoring For these efforts she was honored with the Mannie Jackson - Basketballs

Umiddot - =7 t laquo ~ - I Human Spirit Award from the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010 She has recei ved a lifetime achievement award from the mayor of Boston and was recently awarded the Henry L Shattuck Award for Public Service by the Boston Municipal Research Bureau

Harris currently serves as a board member for the Shelbourne Community Council Boston Neighborhood Basketball League and the Police Athletic League

Susan Summons first success in the NJCAA came as a student-athlete at Roxbury Community College (Mass) Under the gUidance of head coach Alfreda Harris she helped lead Roxbury to back-to-back appearances at the NJCAA Womens Basketball Championship Tournament (1977 78) She later excelled at Lamar University helping the Lady Cardinals to two postseason appearances in the regional AIAW Tournament She began her head coaching career at Roxbury in 1982 and led the program to a 57-6 record through 1986 including an appearance at the NJCAA national tournament (1983) She is currently in her 27th season as the head coach at Miami Dade College (Fla) Her teams have appeared in the Region 8 Championship Tournament 22 times compiling a 432-196 in the process and six 20-win seasons More Importantly the womens basketball program at MOe has maintained an impressive 93 percent (9300) graduation rate Her aU-time head coaching record in the NJCAA stood at 458-325 heading into the 2012-1J season

In addition to her work on the court Summons is highly sought after and is considered one of the nations best motivational speakers She has served on numerous committees and initiati ves whose miSSions and focus has been the advancement of student success through education athletics and womens sports She was a key player in the launch of the World Peace Youth Summit and in 2010 was honored by the Institute for International Sport and the World Youth Peace Summit at its historical Ambassadors of Peace Dinner She was named one of the Top 100 Most Influential Sports Educators in America by the Institute for International Sports Summons was also a 2009 Pulitzer Prize nominator for the book The Encyclopedia of Sports Parenting by Dan Doyle

She is a member of the New England Basketball Hall of Fame the Florida Community College Hall of Fame and has received the WBCA Carol Eckman Award as well as the WBCA Josten Berenson Award which recognizes service and advancement of athletics education sports ethics and commitment to the ideal of student success

Gwyn Young has compiled an impressive resume in his 37 years as the head coach at Copiah-lincoln His head coaching record in the NJCAA of 797 wins and 232 losses makes him the wlnOingest active womens basketball coach in the organization Under his direction the1 Lady Wolv es won 23 Mississippi Association of Community amp Junior Colleges (MACJC) regular

season first place finishes 17 MACJe South Division Championships 22 MACJC State Tournament appearances six MACJC State Championships and been runner-up to the MACJe State Champions eight times

The Lady Wolves have won seven NJCAA Region 23 Championships finished regional runnermiddotup nine times and have advanced to the NJCAA national tournament seven times At the national tournament hIS teams have finished seventh (2010) sixth (2007) sixth (2007 2011) and fourth (1989)

Young has garnered Region 23 Coach of the Year honors seven times and MACJe Mississippi Association of Basketball Coaches Coach of the Year five times

A graduate of Copiah-Uncoln where he was a standout for the Wolves mens basketball team Young was inducted into the colleges Athletic Hall of Fame in 1997 Copiah-Uncoln dedicated Gwynn Young Court to him in 2011 and he was inducted into the MACJC Sports Hall of Fame in 2012

-- --- -------- Kim Ortega is one of just a few basketball players to twice earn first-team NJCAA AIIshyAmerican honors when she achieved the feat following the 2001 and 2002 seasons In two seasons at Seward County she led the Lady Saints to a 71-1 overall record and a perfect 32shyo record In Region 6 play During this time the SCCC Lady Saints won back-to-back Kansas Jayhawk West Division titles as well as the programs second Region 6 tournament championship in 2002 The Lady Saints captured the NJCAA Division 1 Womens Championship in 2002 with a perfect 38-0 record and she earned Tournament MVP and Player of the Year honors For her two-year career at Seward County she averaged 176 points 36 rebounds 4 S assists and 4 7 steals per game

After SCCC Ortega excelled on the court at Texas Christian University helping the lady Horned Frogs to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances and the 2003 Conference USA Tournament Cham pionship After one season of professional basketball she returned to Seward County as an assistant coach in 2005 She most recently was an assistant womens

basketball coach at UNLV

30 CULTURAL ORGANIZATIONS RECEIVE

GRANTS FROM CITIZENS INTERESTED IN ARTS

AVENTURA FL -- Thirty South Florida visual and performing arts organizations will receive 2013 grants from Citizens Interested in Arts (CIA) - a charitable group founded 15 years ago to help struggling arts groups in South Florida it was announced this week

CIA president Lenore Toby-Simmons of Aventura and Grants Chairman Dr Dorothy Koreman said the 2013 grants of $81500 pushed the entire monetary CIA donations to $930000 since the group was founded by two North Dade women - Gloria Muroff and the late Colleen Werner in 1997 She said she was hopeful that the donation total would hit the million dollar mark next year

All 30 grantees awarded this year will officially be recognized at CIAs Grantees on ParadeChampion of the Arts Bruncheon Feb 17 at the Aventura Arts amp Cultural Center The annual event -- a lunch and show featuring some of the performing arts honorees-- will pay tribute to this years Champion of the Arts Robert and Florence Werner for their philanthropy in supporting the arts

Toby-Simmons emphasized how the recent economic downfall had impacted the arts She explained that theatrical companies museums and exhibits are disappearing Now our group and other concerned citizens are organizing to turn things around

Weve come a long way in a short time she said Our first grants went to two aspiring opera singers from Miamis New World School of the Arts We are proud to say the young tenor has gone on to perform at the New York Metropolitan Opera Now this year we can help 30 groups

CIA gives award in both the performing and visual arts Its funds come from membership dues luncheon events and special fund-raising programs such as a recent bus trip to visit cultural attractions and museums in
