In China the Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon or Harvest Moon Festival, is celebrated on the 15th day of the eighth month of the ancient lunar calendar (where the seventh, eighth, and ninth lunar months are classified as autumn) when the moon is the fullest... So, September 13 this year! Families gather for celebrations and to share “moon cakes” as a way to thank the moon for a good harvest. Let’s learn about the moon and make crafts and eat our own “Moon cakes” to celebrate awesome Autumn! Leader: Shelby Miller

Nuts for Squirrels: a Fall Forage for Wildlife and Presentation

Come to the nature center to learn what goodies nature is putting out this time of year for our favorite fluffy tailed woodland friends. We will identify what fruit, nuts, grains, and more are in season and who is eating them. A short classroom discussion about squirrels and their favorite foods will lead into a nature hike where you will have the opportunity to forage food for wildlife in rehabilitation with Lillie Birds Wildlife Rehabilitation in East Nashville. Please bring a re-usable bag to collect items on the hike. If you would like to donate food or other items to Lillie Birds for animals in care, please ask a nature center staff member for items needed. Self Aware Creations was founded to help those suffering from a variety of different mental health disorders through the arts. For this program, we will combine art therapy based practices and nature, as being in a natural setting often helps individuals relax and open up their creative mind; like Bob Ross would say, “Happy trees” while painting. There will be a licensed professional counselor and registered art therapist who will explain how art therapy helps those who are suffering across the mental health continuum. We will also be exploring different art materials and the thoughts and feelings that they may evoke. You don’t have to be a Picasso to come. If you want to just draw in circles with a bunch of colors, you are welcome! This is YOU time. Musicians are encouraged to bring banjos, fiddles, guitars, dobros, and mandolins to gather in groups and play the night away (and bringing your instrument with you gets you a free drink). All proceeds from the event series will go towards revitalization projects at the Cornelia Fort Air Park Trailhead of Shelby Bottoms Greenway.

Invasive Plant Removal - Volunteer Day

Thursday, October 17 12 - 2 pm Ages 16+ Registration required

Need to get out some anger? Want some firewood? By special request: bring your brute and help us remove non-native plant species that are negatively affecting Shelby Bottoms. You'll learn how to identify (and effectively remove) the most common invasive plant species in the park, including privet, honeysuckle, and Johnson grass. You'll also learn about native species we aim to preserve. We will provide tools and gloves, but feel free to bring your own. Long pants recommended. Enjoy the October tradition of pumpkin carving outside of the nature center during one of our Back Porch Picking Parties! You can bring a pumpkin if you would like to participate in the carving, we will have the tools. Self Aware Creations was founded to help those suffering from a variety of different mental health disorders through the arts. For this program, we will combine art therapy based practices and nature, as being in a natural setting often helps individuals relax and open up their creative mind; like Bob Ross would say, “Happy trees” while painting. There will be a licensed professional counselor and registered art therapist who will explain how art therapy helps those who are suffering across the mental health continuum. We will also be exploring different art materials and the thoughts and feelings that they may evoke. You don’t have to be a Picasso to come. If you want to just draw in circles with a bunch of colors, you are welcome! This is YOU time. Shelby Bottoms connects to another dynamic Greenway creating 16+ miles of paved trails! Come see us at what we are calling our Satellite Nature and Outdoor Recreation Center at Stones River Greenway’s J. Percy Priest Dam Trailhead! You’ll find restrooms, a dog park, and a non-motorized boat access. We’ll have trail maps, outdoor rec and nature centers info, binoculars, puppets, and more! From 11 to 1, join us for a naturalist-led Fall Colors Bike Ride for approximately 5 miles. We’ll meet at the Satellite Site. Helmet required for bike ride participation.

Did you know the Shelby Bottoms Park is home to dozens of native White-tailed Deer? This time of year, they are very active finding mates and literally leaving their marks on the park. A hike searching for antler rubs, deer tracks, and deer spotting will be led by volunteer naturalist and permitted wildlife rehabber Devon. During the hike, discussion will take place about the natural history of deer and the impact of human development on their habitats. Bring your hiking shoes and a camera!
