In a popular Christmas time hymn, we sing the refrain,

“O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy, O tidings of comfort and joy.”

Comfort and joy. During these troubled and unsettled times, the people of God can indeed sense

the true comfort and joy that Christ brings us as we celebrate the coming of Christ this Advent and

Christmas.

For the four Sundays of Advent we will celebrate the theme of “Comfort and Joy” throughout our

worship services. Using the words of Isaiah 40 as our guide, we will explore the themes of:

First Sunday of Advent – November 30: The Peace of Christ. True peace comes only

through Jesus Christ and the forgiveness that He brings. He ends warfare without

and within. He is our Prince of Peace.

Second Sunday of Advent – December 7: The Pardon of Christ. We prepare the way

of the Lord through repentance, as the forgiveness we receive through Christ

makes the rough places of our lives smooth.

Third Sunday of Advent – December 14: The Presence of Christ. We remember that

Christ is present with us now and that He will come again in glory on the Last Day.

Fourth Sunday of Advent – December 21: The Power of Christ. God Himself came to

live among us and be our Savior, but His power was displayed in the weakness

and humility of the manger and the cross.

In addition to the Sundays of Advent, we will prepare ourselves for the coming of Christ this Advent season with additional worship opportunities on the three Wednesdays of Advent. On the Wednes-day’s in Advent we will focus on the theme: “Unto Us A Child Is Born” drawing upon the words of Isaiah 9:6. Worship service times will be 11:00 am, 5:00 pm, and 7:00 pm. A time of food and fel-lowship will be at 5:45 pm. Our worship services and themes will be:

December 3 – “Wonderful Counselor”

December 10 – “Everlasting Father”

December 17 – “Prince of Peace”

Please mark your calendar and invite friends and family to worship with you for our Christmas Eve Candlelight Worship at 4:30 pm, 6:30 pm and 8:30 pm and our Christmas Day worship at 10:00 am. May the Lord bring to you and your family gifts of “comfort and joy” this Advent and Christmas Sea-son.

Call Committee Update

Congregational Meeting on November 2: Members approved priorities for the Pastoral Call. Names of 19 pastors were submitted by members and approved as our Call List. The list was submitted to District President Walton for information on each pastor. District is expected to add names and may remove some at the pastor’s request or for other reasons. We hope to receive a revised list & pastor information by early January. Names submitted include:

Members also approved a list of ministry priorities, which were based on results of congrega-tion surveys and forums. These ministry priorities will serve as a basis for selecting a pastor and give direction in ministry.

Call Process Update: As we await the return of information on the pastors (which may take up to about 60 days), the Call Committee has been working on refining the interview process. Upon receiving the pastor information, we will initiate interviews to develop our recommenda-tions to the congregation. Members may wish to research the pastors on the LCMS website: www.lcms.org.

Blessed celebration of the birth of our Lord!

Below is a thank you from Rob & Micah Hilbert, who are missionaries in Africa, The Hilbert's are members of Messiah and a number of members support them at Lutheran Bible Translators. They have been evacuated from Sierra Leone due to the Ebola epidemic.

Thank you for your support and prayers! They mean so much to us personally and to the ministry.

It was so difficult to be evacuated due to Ebola. We can only trust God continues to have a plan for us and Sierra Leone. We're thankful He made you a part of that plan.

We'd love to hear from you. [email protected]

In Christ, Rob, Micah, Carsten & Annabelle

Culminating over two years of work, a new LED sign was re-cently installed in front of the church next to Hutchison Road. Over 14,000 vehicles travel this road each day, so it is only fit-ting that we try to reach travelers with news of Messiah's min-istries in an attractive and visible way. Thank you to the sign committee: Grant Walters, Sandy Hansen, Tom Windsor, Gary

Weber, Jack Proeschel, Connie Buckner, Teresa Klicker, and Claudia Bohren. Contributions are still accepted.

A bountiful and delicious catered gourmet meal will be placed before ye. Women of Messiah – LWML

We will be hosting the Advent meal on Wednesday, December 17th in

the CLC. The ladies are making delicious soups like the last couple of years.

They do a great job making a variety of soups, so plan on coming to the

meal before the service on the 17th.

We will not have meetings in December. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, January

13 for the morning group and Thursday, January 22nd. for the evening group. We will be

doing a project for Lutheran World Relief in January and February.

SANTA’S MAILBOX FOR HOPE CHILDREN’S HOME

Messiah Social Ministry is making the annual call to all of our Christmas angels! Please show your love and help make a happier holiday for one or more of the children at Hope Children’s Home, located only a few miles

from our church. The precious children in residency at this Christian-based campus are separated from their parents for months or years due to domestic or economic reasons. You will find envelopes containing Christmas gift “wish lists” for each child in Santa’s Mailbox which will be located in the Narthex between November 30th and Dec. 14th. Please place your wrapped gift(s) under the Mailbox. Plan your holiday activities to include attending our Hope Children’s Home Christmas Party scheduled for Friday, December 19, 2014 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Your generosity will bring smiles to the faces of Hope’s children and joy to your heart. Thanks to all who respond to this special project for the dear children at Hope. Messiah Social Ministry.

HOPE CHILDREN’S HOME CHRISTMAS PARTY

All of the donated gifts from Messiah members and friends will be dis-tributed to the children at Hope Children’s Home during a Christmas Party scheduled for Friday evening, December 19, 2014 from 6:00 p.m

to 8:00 p.m. Anyone wishing to join in the fun evening may meet at the church park-ing lot at 5:30 p.m. to carpool to Hope. During this party, you will have the opportunity to get to know the children and enjoy seeing their happy faces as they receive and open their special Christmas gifts. Messiah Social Ministry Team thanks you for your expressions of love and thoughtfulness to our Hope kids!

Family Christmas Festival

Christ is the Heart of Christmas Family Christmas Festival

This festival is open to children and adults of all ages. It is for families

and singles, members and friends. Just as Jesus is a gift for all, this

event is for all people!

Instead of a “Sunday School” Christmas program, this year we would

like to get families and people of all ages involved in our Family

Christmas Festival program. Everyone has a hand in putting together

the program! The story and parts are learned during the first 15 min-

utes of Sunday School/youth group during the next few weeks.

Individuals/families willing to help with a reading can work on lines

on their own time at home too. Not an actor? Not a singer? No fear

this is designed for involvement no matter your comfort level. Just

come and experience the Nativity like never before.

We know December is busy so we will gather together on Sunday

December 21st during the 9:45AM hour in the Sanctuary for a

special time of learning about whom is at the center of Christmas.

Contact Abby Moss or Kim Capsas to get involved and everyone is

invited to join us on the 21st!

From Abby… (Not to be confused with Dear Abby,)

Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord! I have to admit these words of Isaiah 40:3 and reiterated in Luke 3:4 so often heard during Advent, jumped

out at me this year.

Advent is to be a time of preparation. Our worldly understanding of that often trans-lates to all the earthly preparations we must make for Christmas, like decorating,

and gift buying, and parties, and more. It is often too much. What is supposed to be a time of great joy and anticipation can quickly become burdened with more to do than time to do it all. We become like Martha in Luke 10:38 where we become so distracted by the earthly here and now and the preparations that need to be made that we miss what is truly in front of us, Jesus sitting in our living room with an

open invitation to find renewal and rest and to focus on things that matter eternally and not temporarily.

Our spiritual understanding knows this season (like all of life) is supposed to be

about God’s Word, worship, and prayer that we might prepare the Way for God. It can seem like one more thing to add to the December list. We might continue to feel like Martha and even cry out to God, “help me get through all of this and to do all of this.” It may seem like devotions or Advent services are another thing to do until we remember that we don’t have another thing to prepare or do, Christmas is about God

coming to us, and offering everything to us freely and us merely receiving Him. Jesus reminds Martha few things are needed, in fact only one thing is needed, Jesus.

That is true in December and all year through.

When it comes to our faith, nothing is needed or required, Christmas is all about Emmanuel, God coming to us in Christ, and God providing us everything in Jesus we need to be saved, we merely need to be ready to receive. Christmas is all about God doing all of the work. Christmas is all about God keeping His promises and doing what He said He would do. Christmas is all about Christ and what He has

done, not what we need to do.

May we find comfort and rest in this season of “preparation.” May we be the Marys of the Mary and Martha story whose hearts are prepared not only for Christmas but

for Christ’s return, focused on Him above all things.
