THANK YOU letters

Dear Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church members:

Thank you so much for your recent donation of $500.00 to Community Action of Southeast Iowa for community needs.

Today is a critical time for families with which we are working. Families are having a hard time making the decision on whether to pay utilities, rent or to buy food. In Des Moines County we served over 2,645 households last year. Of these families, 49% were working and were still living in poverty.

Because of people like you who care, we are able to make life better for families who are in crisis.

Thank you for caring about families who are in need.

Sincerely, Sharon L. Ford, CCAP Executive Director

Scholarship Committee,

Thank you for your generous Messiah Lutheran Church Scholarship. I am honored and very appre-ciative to receive it. I returned to Iowa State Univer-sity this fall for my junior year, as I am majoring in History Education. I am extremely excited to take full advantage of my learning experience and achieve my goals. With the Messiah Lutheran Church Scholarship, it has lessened the financial burden and allows me to focus more on my educa-tion.

I want to thank you for your time and consideration, as I hope one day I will be able to help other stu-dents as you have helped me.

Thank you, Bailey Galvin Dear Friends of Messiah, I want to thank you for the donation of $1,300 to the Homeless Shelter. I was amazed at the amount. Please know how much I appreciate your kindness and your support. This money will be a great help to us and will help to keep our bills paid. Painting our living room, planting the flowers and the work that was done in the park was also very much appreciated. Thank you again and God Bless all of you. Sincerely, Char Blodgett

Messiah Preschool News Greetings from the children’s wing in the church. Our Braided Bread and Cookie Dough fundraiser is over and I want to thank the couple of you that helped us out by making a purchase. Our next project is the HELP US FILL THE CART for our Sharing and Caring curriculum. The children and their families will bring canned and boxed foods in to fill the gro-cery cart and then share with needy families in our community. We will talk about the first Thanksgiving and how we now celebrate the holiday by having

a special meal with our family and friends in Thanksgiving for the many blessings we are given daily. At the end of our food drive we will celebrate with our traditional “Tasting Party” the days before Thanksgiving so we can share a meal with our friends and teachers and give thanks for all the fun things we do each day and the many new friends we have made.

Our classes have been very busy with all our community friends that come to visit us. The firefight-ers and paramedics came to help us get to know them and learn some very important fire safety rules and to share their fire trucks and ambulances with us. Don Myatt and the Noon Lions Club did their annual eye exams and Tammy from the WIC program came to do her annual dental screen-ings. Miss Kathy has come to read to us from the Burlington Public Library and Pastor Susanne has come to share stories of how much Jesus Loves Us. Ms. Frances from Starr’s Cave has come to teach us about the Bees and how honey is made and this month will come to talk about hibernation with us. We will end our month just as busy as the beginning was as we will have conferences on Friday and Saturday and on Sunday we will share in the Trunk or Treat fun with the Children’s Minis-try at Messiah. We are asking our Preschool Board to participate by bringing your vehicle decorated or not and handing our goodies to the children. Our families are all invited to this annual event. Of course we will have had some Halloween Fun parties in our rooms at the end of October.

Young House Family Services is offering a FREE Parenting Class to all of our families once again and we would like to invite any of you new, already parenting and looking for new ideas, or “grand”parents again, to come to these classes. This is targeted to 3 and 5 year olds but can be adapted to all ages! There is a free support manual that goes with the program. “Raising a Thinking Child: I Can Problem Solve!” was developed with 25 years of research. Times and location to be announced. If you are interested you can contact Joanie Juvinal at 319-457-1752 or Ms. Margie at 319-754-7591 ext. 2.

TEACHING AND LEARNING

CONFIRMATION--not just for middle school stu-dents anymore! Anyone who wishes to participate in Messiah’s confirmation classes is welcome to attend classes on Wednesday evenings, 7:30-8:30 p.m. in the conference room. This is a Bible year in a two-year curriculum rotation, and we are presently in the book of Genesis. For more information, talk with Pastor Susanne.

ALTERNATIVE GIFT GIVING THROUGH THE ELCA’S GOOD GIFTS CATALOG We who have nearly everything can still give great gifts to eachother at Christmas. The ELCA’s Good Gifts catalog lets us choose a gift of 10 chicks or a piglet, a cookstove, blankets and food for a refugee family, training for a community health team, school uniforms and tuition to send a girl to school, and much more. Give these gifts this Christmas, and give your loved one an ELCA Christmas thank-you card that gives them the credit for inspiring your gift. Catalogs and cards are in the narthex at the church for you to take home.

Messiah Faith Story/Camp Ewalu It’s Saturday night in late October. Messiah member Zach Morgan is going square dancing tonight with other young staff from Ewalu Lutheran Camp. The camp is in Strawberry Point, Iowa, but they have made such good friends with eachother that one group is driving down from Cedar Rapids to meet Zach in Iowa City, and they’re all going to Mount Vernon to meet another group from Des Moines. “There’s no predetermined judgment with these friends. Nobody decides how you are supposed to be. Everyone accepts you as you are. It’s just the way camp is. Everyone there has the same ideas about getting along and being friends. “I want to go back to Camp Ewalu next summer because I’ve had experiences there I wouldn’t have had anywhere else. You can behave at camp like nowhere else in the world. Even when people are a little grumpy with eachother, like we are all there for weeks on end. But I was never mad at anyone, just annoyed, but we all get over it. We’re there to work for the kids that come to camp, and our problems become second to that. God’s first, the kids are second and we are after that. So we don’t worry that much about ourselves or each other.” Zach says he’s going back to Ewalu next summer for another experience in leadership training. He’ll be doing everything the counselors do, spending time with the campers, and keeping the program week moving. We are hoping that Messiah’s confirmation students will be at Camp Ewalu when Zach is available to spend time with them. God bless Zach and this ELCA ministry that supports young people on their faith journeys through the dedication of a fine staff and the blessing of the out of doors.

A note from Kelly...

It was so nice to see all the children dressed up for Trunk or Treat Sunday and all the congregational and preschool fami-lies that were gracious hosts and set up their trunks to pass out candy. Thank you for making this outreach ministry pos-sible! As we move past Halloween and look towards time together with our families during Thanksgiving and Advent here is a couple reminders of upcoming activities. The chil-dren’s choir will be singing on Nov. 15th during the 10:30am worship service a prayer they have been learning during their snack rotation. Practice for the Christmas program will begin on Nov. 29th during the lesson rotation of Sunday School. Please make sure your child is at Sunday school so they can be a part of this time. The Christmas program will be held on Dec. 13th during the 10:30am worship service with a simple play and music they have been working hard on with Marcia Taeger. We will also be sponsoring Adopt-a-family tree for Christmas. Any member that would like to be considered for adoption, please see Kelly. Names and family information (congregational or community) is kept strictly confidential. We receive families from Community Action that are unable to participate in Toys for Tots.

Mission Trip

2016

I am super excited to announce that our mission trip for 2016 will

be in Brownsville, Tennessee! Brownsville is about an hour away from

Memphis and two hours from Nashville.

We will leave early Friday morning July 8th and work with Group

mission trips on home repair within the community. We will finish our

work on Monday, July 11th and take our time returning home on Tues-

day, July 12 or Wednesday, July 13. I am hoping to be able to have

some fun in Nashville, Memphis, or St. Louis on our way home.

Cost for the mission trip portion is $289.00 (this includes lodging

while in Brownsville and food). There will be additional costs depending

on what fun we have on the way home and gas/van rental expenses. My

best guess is $400-$500 per person.

To register, please get Kelly a $50 non-refundable registration fee by

November 22nd.

If you have questions, please let me know. Also, you can watch a video

about Group mission trips at http://groupmissiontrips.com/workcamps/

Thanks! Kelly

For youth entering 7th grade and up

You must be at least 12 years old by July 8th.

From the Pastor’s desk

Messiah is a generous congregation. We recognize this partly in the thank-you notes that come back to us, like this one that Bishop Burk wrote in response to our giving an ‘over and above budget’ gift to synod this summer from the Carl Pedersen bequest.

October 7, 2015 Dear Pastor Smith and congregation leaders,

We are grateful for your generous gift over and above your regular mission support. And we give thanks for the abundant blessings that come from that support. Your prayers and part- nership strengthen our shared mission and ministry that serves the church throughout south- eastern Iowa and the world. Your donation of $5803.70 has been added to the “Where Need- ed Most” category of the ELCA’s ‘Always Being Made New’ campaign. This gift helps en- sure that we will fulfil our promise to care for congregations in time of transition, seminary stu- dents, and people who are hungry and living in poverty. Together, our impact is far-reaching and life-changing. Thank you, again, for this gift and thank you for your partnership through out the years. For the ministry done within and through Messiah Lutheran Church—Thanks be to God!

Sincerely, Bishop Michael Burk

The ELCA’s ‘Always Being Made New’ campaign is a recent initiative of the ELCA, aspiring to raise nearly $200,000,000 in five years. Please go see the details on the ELCA website.

You have read Joel Hanger’s excellent article in the September newsletter, outlining the strengths of Messiah’s finances. We are incredibly blessed, but Joel reminds us that the income of our trusts does not support our program and staff, our utilities and scholarships. We fund these areas through our mutual commitment to support our annual budget, and we are already planning Messiah’s 2016 budget. I am asking every ministry group in the congregation to pick up and use an outline that rec-ommends what should go in your annual report to the congregation, and your request for resources for 2016—time, people-power, prayers and money--needed to accomplish your group’s mission in the coming year. You will find that form on a table in the narthex and on the website. I am also asking everyone in the congregation to review, prayerfully, the scope of your commitment to support the ministry here. What are you willing to commit, of your time, your talent, your intellect, your presence in worship and your prayers, your physical and financial resources?

So why do we ask eachother for pledges like these? We want to live a vibrant, generous, and faith-ful life, and we want to follow the gospel’s leading. We want to be the best stewards we can be. And to do this we must have vision, and a plan to accomplish that vision. Thank God for Messiah’s staff. Thank God for Messiah’s work in the community and in support of the poor in many places. Thank God for our worship, for liturgy and music, for the Word and the sacraments. Thank God for our fellowship and our mutual support. Thank God for the spiritual formation provided to our children and grandchildren, and the comfort we offer eachother in times of grief. Thank God for our trusts and the freedom from anxiety they provide about our physical facility and some of our own members’ needs. Thank God we are able to do God’s work with our hands.

All this happens because we are a community of Jesus, a community of the gospel in this place. Bank on it, everything we share with eachother blesses God’s world - and it will come back to bless us too, in surprising and saving ways. Jesus is like that.
