A NOTE FROM LUTHERAN SERVICES IN IOWA
Dear Pastor and members,
Children once abused find love with a forever family. A refugee woman from Bhutan finds hope through a community garden. A young dad finds new confi-dence in his parenting.
When LSI steps into a family’s life, I believe anything is possible . . . all because of you.
Thank you for your wonderful gift of $300.00 to LSI! We are so grateful!
Already, your gift is hard at work helping Iowans dur-ing their times of greatest need. Thank you for being a person who takes action to bring hope and healing to our world!
With gratitude,
Jason Lee Vice President of Philanthropy and Church Relations

LANDSCAPERS WANT YOU TO MEET THE NEW TREE at the bend in the driveway—Picea Omoria “Berliner’s Weeping ‘or’ Weeper Spruce. Mr. Ben Ber-liner of New York introduced this narrow strict upright selection of Serbian Spruce. The cascading branches turn upward at the terminal. This tree has silvery-blue-green needles and will be 20’ to 30’ at maturity.
SERVICE AND WITNESS
THE SOCIAL MINISTRY COMMITTEE will hold their next meeting on Tuesday, July 7th, at 7:00 p.m. at the church. We would like to invite anyone interested in working with us to attend this meeting. We welcome all ages – teenagers on up – to join us. If you have any suggestions concerning possible future projects or services, attend this meeting and share your ideas with us. Or, call Marjorie Hawk at 752-8009 in the evening to give us your suggestions.
From the Pastor’s desk
One of the compelling, difficult, dimensions of the Christian journey is ‘servant leadership’. Compelling? We are commanded, straight from Jesus’ mouth, to love unselfishly, love the best we can, willing to learn better how to love, willing to love in the face of indifference, even opposition. Difficult? Agape love is sometimes easy, sometimes even irresistibly winsome. And sometimes not. Back to ‘compelling’. Love is who we are and what we do as servant leaders.
Here is a Messiah story: a letter dated April 30, 2015, is pinned to the global missions bulletin board outside the church office, from Bethany Lutheran Schools in Suakoko, Bong County, Liberia. “Dear Miss Miller, We received the money you sent for us, and it was very timing. We extend our immense thanks and gratitude’s for the assistance you have being given us. We highly appreciated it because posts Ebola war in Liberia things are very hard yet for us to collect our broken pieces and put them together. God been in controlled and because of his love and grace he was able to keep us alive to see this day. Many thanks and we wish you God blessing. Sincerely yours, Administration and Staff BLS”.
One of Messiah’s leadership commitments is to contribute about $1000 annually towards the expense of our ELCA missionary companions in Liberia. You will see the signup sheet on our global missions bulletin board across from the church office. Pastor Brian and family spent some of 2014 working in Cameroon, away from the Ebola misery, but he is now back at the Lutheran seminary in Liberia. We get to pray for them, for Bethany schools, for Phebe, and for Naomi Wilson, the Liberian Lutheran church’s representative to many international organizations, and assistant to Bishop Nelson Seyenkulo. And they pray for us, while they are advancing Christian education, healing, and justice in their own culture and country. Our mission bulletin board also has brochures that invite YOU to volunteer in global mission with the ELCA. Go take a look!
Servant leaders lean into the future, anticipating a future under Jesus’ leadership, certain it will be different from the past. Servant leaders pray for insight into how the kingdom of heaven will be revealed in new ways and work towards that vision. Servant leaders learn to laugh about making mistakes and having to straighten themselves out, one more time, and get back on track. But they move ahead. Messiah is moving ahead, collaborating with other congregations, stewarding our resources and creating a vision for the next generation of Christians in this place. Are we all in?

Piecemakers
(Outreach Committee → Missions → Piecemakers) The Piecemakers is a group of women from Messiah and Faith (men are welcome, too) interested in helping people throughout the world by making simple quilts and donating them to Lutheran World Relief. Some-times, a few may be donated for local needs.
The quilts are made from materials that have been largely donated, then machine stitched and hand tied. Sewing skills are not required. Volunteers are needed to tie the quilt layers and others can assist in laying out the blocks for the top layer.
There are two groups that meet at different times. One group meets from 9 a.m.—12 noon on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday the months of September-May. An evening group meets the 2nd Tuesday of each month from 7 p.m. for an hour and a half to 2 hours. There are also some women who make the tops at home from fabrics of their own choice or from kits assembled for sewing.
Quilts are transported to Cedar Rapids the 3rd Saturday of April and 2 vehicles and drivers are needed to make this delivery.
For more information, please call Joanne Mohr (752-2849), Marjorie Hawk (752-8009), or Lisa Weiler (759-9247).
Our goal is to finish about 100 quilts a year. Many of our youth have helped as part of their service projects. We welcome others that want to help in our mission. Friends who are not members of Messiah or Faith may join us as well.
Messiah Merry Munchers Supper Club
(Parish Life Committee) The Messiah Merry Munchers is a supper club of Messiah members who gather for good food and enjoya-ble fellowship. This group meets monthly at a restaurant—in Burlington or in the region—determined by the members at the previous monthly gathering. The person or couple in charge for the month changes each time. For further information about getting a supper club organized, please contact the Parish Life chair. Present-ly, that person is Joanne Mohr at 752-2849.

319-754-7591 ext.2 • 2411 West Ave., Burlington, Iowa 52601
Greetings from the children’s wing. Yes, we have a few openings in our 3 and 4 year-old ses-
sions. Call Ms. Margie (our Director) at 754-7591 ext. 2. If I am not available, leave me a
message with your phone number, name, address, and the class you are interested in. I will
return your call and answer any questions you may have. I would like to invite you to renew or
lend your support for Messiah Preschool students by donating to the Scholarship/Tuition Fund.
This helps with tuition assistance to our church family members. Several families still wish to
have their children attend a private Christian preschool setting rather than attend the public
school programs at this age. The opportunities we offer the children give them a jump start
throughout their educational journey in a nurturing setting. These experiences are develop-
mentally appropriate and balanced between structure and free choice. Other items that you
could donate to the preschool would be gift cards from Walmart, Staples, Walgreens, Fairway
or Hy-Vee. Also, we can always use craft or art materials. We continue to still collect Camp-
bells soups labels or product labels and proof of purchases. Every donation helps in great
ways. Have a safe and relaxing summer!! Thank you for your continued support and prayers.

July Youth News
The road to Detroit began over 2 years ago with youth hearing stories from those who participated in the ELCA National Youth Gathering in New Orleans in 2012. This new group of high school students began thinking about what an experience like attending a National Youth Gathering would look like for them and how it would impact their faith journey. They spent time learning about this opportunity and decided to sign up to show up in Detroit in July 2015.
They have been selling script cards, putting on brunches, selling community basket tickets, hosting a silent auction, having bake sales, and a car wash to help them raise money to attend. These youth have spent hours in community together learning about the city of Detroit, what it means to be a disciple, how we will impact Detroit when we arrive to accompany this city for 5 days with 36,000 of our closest Lutheran friends, and about the Gospel of Mark which our Gathering theme comes from.
On behalf of the youth attending this trip I would like to thank you for your support of our young people. I would like to ask that you continue to pray for us and for the people of Detroit especially during the 2015 ELCA National Youth Gathering July 15-19. You can also follow us and watch live streaming of the mass gatherings. For more information, please visit www.elca.org/gathering.
Blessings,
Kelly

The Church in Liberia took up the fight
The international community reacted only when the Liberians were about to fall on their knees due to Ebola. The country's Lutheran church played an important role in the fight against the disease, but had to pay a high price.
At first it was difficult to convince both Liberians and the international community about the seriousness, says Naomi Ford-Wilson, general secretary of the Lutheran Church in Liberia (LCL). But the Church was convinced and quickly alerted the ACT Alliance’s Office in Geneva.
In the early months, the number of cases constantly increased, and also LCL's hospitals were hit early by the epidemic. In one of them four nurses died.
The Church got the strength to forcefully say, "this is an epidemic, this is not an imagination" and the Church took lead role in fighting the Ebola. But the international community acted too slowly and became active only when our president sent out a cry for help "we are dying", says Naomi Ford-Wilson, general secretary of the LCL.
To reduce the spread of infection people was not allowed to move freely in the society. Religious organiza-tions and leaders had a special opportunity to reach out to the population. They could take up people's fear, talk about the stigma and the discrimination which arose as a result of the Ebola. Naomi Ford-Wilson ex-plains how the LCL bishop used the Church as a network to reach out into the country.
During the Ebola epidemic the Church of Sweden supported the work of LCL that included dissemination of information about Ebola, how it is transmitted and how to protect yourselves against it. The result of the work changed among other things the traditional funeral rituals - an important source of contamination. They provided protective clothing for those who were in contact with the sick and dying people, and provided victuals and cleaning detergents to families – Ebola shattered families and visit to market places became a dangerous thing to do.
Children in Liberia reminded the adults: "You must wash your hands so you do not get sick". They as well took part in the fight against Ebola, says Naomi Ford-Wilson.
It is almost four weeks ago that the WHO officially declared Liberia free from Ebola, and people celebrated. We are pleased, but we are not one hundred percent happy until our neighbors, Guinea and Sierra Leone
are also free from the infection, says Naomi Ford-Wilson.
After the epidemic the Church of Sweden continues to support LCL’s work that include trauma healing, practi-cal support to people who for example are trying to build up small businesses and orphans who need care and education. But Ebola has hit the country hard.
Many educated Liberians left the country during the civil war. They started to come back, but when Ebola broke out it stopped of course. We as well lost too many doctors who died of Ebola. So we are back to square one, says Naomi Ford-Wilson.
FACTS
LIBERIA
Liberia has 4.4 million inhabitants. 85 percent are Christian, 12 percent Muslim.
Ebola is a viral disease with a mortality rate of 65-90 percent. Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone have been hardest hit. In Liberia declared some 10,000 people have been infected and more than 4500 have died from March 2014 until the country was declared Ebola free in early May this year.
The Lutheran Church in Liberia has 70,000 members. The Church runs among others two hospitals that had an important role in the fight against Ebola.
Last year the Church of Sweden collected around 2.4 million crowns to the Ebolawork.
