Dear Messiah,

As summer is upon us it’s a great time to be outside with your neighbors. What are some of your favorite summer memories with friends? These times outside are great opportunities to build relationships were we can follow Christ’s call to love our neighbor.

Here are a few of my favorite ways to build relationships with neighbors: ● Move to the front yard. Rather than doing all of your Barbecuing or whatever activity you do in the backyard, move to the front yard. Say hi to neighbors as they walk and drive by. ● Have a community 4th of July BBQ. If your neighborhood already does this, simply show up. If they don’t, talk to a few neighbors and see if they would be interested. Have each household bring their own meat to throw on the grill and a side dish to share with the neighborhood. It’s a great way to get to know your neighbors. We do about 4 of these type of community gatherings on my street a year. ● Offer to serve your neighbor if they are traveling on vacation. You could roll their garbage up and down their driveway, bring their mail and packages in, or even mow their lawn so it’s not so tall when they return. ● Drop off a “welcome to the neighborhood” basket to new neighbors. Summer it seems people are always moving into the neighborhood. When you see the truck arrive, bake some cookies or drop off a basket of produce to welcome them. This is something your family can work to get together. It’s a great way to meet them and start building a relationship. ● Go on a prayer walk. Prayer walking is simply walking through your neighbor- hood praying for what you see. You can do this alone or with someone. For example on a walk you might see a basketball hoop and pray “Lord, when I see this hoop it makes me think of the kids that grew up in this home. I pray that you be with them and guide them.” You might see a beautiful garden and pray “Lord be with the gardner who makes this garden full of life.” You might even know your neighbors and as you pass their homes pray for a specific request they might have.

Do you have any other ways you connect with people? There are so many things you can do. I want to charge you to speak to your neighbors this month. Work on build-ing relationships and as you develop those relationships go and love your neighbor.

God’s Peace, Pastor Mark

“Feed Your Neighbor”

School Kids Food Program

School kids Food Program is a partnership between Messiah’s Feed

Your Neighbor (FYN) Ministry and Citrus Park Elementary School.

The goal of this program is to provide school-identified disadvan-

taged families with a breakfast and lunch for their children each

weekend during the school year.

Every Friday during the school year the FYN Ministry will prepare and deliver approxi-

mately thirty sets of weekend meals to the school social worker for distribution to the fami-

lies. There are 36 weeks in the school year. Four meals per student will be prepared each

week. Approximately 4,320 meals will be provided during the school year.

You can help by donating food items. To make this process simple we have created a 3

week cycle menu which will repeat 12 times during the school year. This allows us to know

exactly what items we will need to ensure a proper variety. Just take one of the ‘shopping

lists’ from the Feed our School Kids bulletin board. After you have completed buying your

shopping list return the items with the list in a bag or box and place it in the FYN Food

collection. REMEMBER WE NEED THE SMALL INDIVIDUAL SERVING SIZE FOOD

ITEMS.

We invite you to pick up your shopping lists anytime throughout the school year, along

with a brochure explaining all the details of this program.

Thank you for your continued support of Feed Your Neighbor.

From Abby… (Not to be confused with Dear Abby,)

One of my favorite moments from Vacation Bible School didn’t come in the middle of one of Pastor’s exciting Bible Stories or the awesome worship of the Opening/Closing pro-gram (though many great moments did happen at those times). My favorite moment was a much calmer and quieter moment at VBS that most others weren’t aware of, and it was when a 2nd grader that had been a handful on Wednesday arrived on Thursday morning and trembling with mom by his side apologized for not being a good listener and follow-ing instructions. I got to get down at his eye level, thank him for apologizing, and then tell him the best thing about Jesus loving us is that He also forgives us when we are sorry and that because He forgives us, I could forgive him too. This child got a huge smile on his face. He had a great rest of the week. I also later overheard him tell someone else who had wronged him, “it’s ok, everyone makes mistakes, you’re forgiven.” Sometimes I think we lose sight of or take for granted (at least I know I do) the power of forgiveness. Receiving forgiveness can be truly transformative, giving it can be as well for both us and the person receiving it. Colossians 1:9-14 says, “ For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light. For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the for-giveness of sins.”

Part of living lives of faith means living as those who know what forgiveness is and extending it the same way we have been given it (more than we deserve). Forgiveness isn’t always easy to practice but it is truly unique to Christianity and what we as Christians can offer the world that they won’t get anywhere else. Our faith comes out of what God through Jesus HAS DONE, for us. He fixed what we couldn’t fix, and gave forgiveness freely though undeserved and unearned. Satan wants us to think that what God has given us isn’t good enough, that we still need more, or he wants us to lose sight of how awesome forgiveness is and expect it as not a big deal, not something needed by us or others. Forgiveness is tied to everything that God gives us. It is proclaimed in His Word, it is a part of the benefits of both Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. It’s the 5th petition in the Lord’s Prayer. We rou-tinely use Confession/Absolution in worship as a way to remind us of wrongs we do, to confess them and then to receive forgiveness from the Pastor as from God himself. It is also part of the Church’s (that’s you and me) calling and mission (Office of the Keys) to proclaim the Gospel and offer forgiveness to others who need it. May we all be reminded of this great gift of forgiveness, rest assured in it, and pass it on to others. Acts 13:38-39 Therefore, my friends, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is pro-claimed to you. Through him everyone who believes is set free from every sin, a justification you were not able to obtain under the law of Moses.

Consider Helping with our Sunday School this fall: We are recruiting teachers and assistants for the 2018-2019 school year starting August 12, 2018 and ending May 26, 2019. Please pray about your involvement to volunteer to be a Sunday School teacher or assistant. Why should you get involved? Many teachers, year after year, keep returning to teach our children the Bible. We need some new adult teachers/helpers to commit to teaching for the coming year. We need enthusiastic participation by our adults if we are to remain a Bible based church. How can members know we are growing to touch lives if we are complacent about the Word of God? Being a teacher is partaking in a needed ministry right here in the mission field. Being a teacher allows you to give back of the salvation that you believe. Being a teacher causes an impact on your students to be moved by the lesson and to have fun and fellowship in the classroom. Pray about being a teacher or assistant. Can’t help every week? No problem! While we love consistency, our curriculum is set up with some flexibility so that you can help every week, for a series of weeks, or even one Sunday a month (like every 3rd Sunday). Why would you want to be a Sunday School teacher or helper?

It is our duty and responsibility to teach our children the Word of God.

It is a joy and privilege and it is fun and exciting to minister the Word.

The Word, once administered, will not return void.

Sunday School is a fundamental ministry of the congregation; we would not be a Bible based church without it.

Teachers and assistants become evangelists by proclaiming the Word.

By preparing the lessons, you become knowledgeable of the Bible.

Teachers and assistants leave a lifelong lasting impression on their students.

Teaching Sunday School puts your faith into action.

Plus, it is a lot of fun!

We are especially looking for help with our two year old class, our 1st-4th grade class, and our middle school class. It is required that all teachers and helpers attend a child abuse pre-vention seminar to be announced later (being scheduled for August). It is a rewarding experience to teach the Bible to our children. Can we count on you? Please sign up today on the bulletin board in the Narthex. Please join this ministry: We must be in the Word in order to Grow to Touch Lives. Talk to Ernie Munzen, Abby Moss, or Pastor Mark for more information or with questions. Can’t serve in the ways indicated above? We also need Substi-tute teachers: persons who can teach or help and fill in when others are sick or out of town, often, on short notice.
