These meals will be sent into Haiti and South Carolina. All these meals were packaged by volunteers here in the state of Iowa that continu-ally work to change the statistics in global hunger. In 2015, Take Away Hunger teams produced nearly 3,000,000 meals that were shipped into 7 different countries and also distributed over 200,000 here in Iowa. TAKE AWAY HUNGER will be packaging on Satur-day, November 19 with Messiah scheduled for 11 a.m. Please sign the sheet in the narthex if you plan on helping. Thanks so much for your support. Messiah Preschool 3, 4 & 5-Year-old Sessions

SHAPING FUTURES THROUGH FAITH BASED EDUCATION

Messiah Preschool News Greetings from the children’s wing in the church. Our classes have been very busy with all our community friends that come to visit us. The firefighters and paramedics came to help us get to know them and learn some very important fire safety rules and to share their fire trucks and ambulances with us. Be sure to check your own fire/smoke alarms for working batteries. Don Myatt and the Noon Lions Club did their annual eye exams and Tammy from the WIC program came to do her annual dental screenings. Miss Pat has come to read to us from the Burlington Public Library and Pastor Susanne has come to share stories of how much Jesus loves us. Ms. Frances from Starr’s Cave has come to teach us about our changing season and this month will come to talk about hibernation with us. We will end our month just as busy as the beginning was as we had conferences on Friday and Sat- urday and on Sunday we shared in the Trunk - or - Treat fun with the children’s ministry at Messiah. It was an awesome experience seeing so many families participate this year. The day was beautiful and you missed seeing so many cute hooligans marching from car to car spreading joy in the day! We will have had some Halloween fun parties in our rooms at the end of October for the kids to sing and recite our fun poems and songs and listen to some exciting stories.

Our next project is the HELP US FILL THE CART for our Sharing and Caring curric-ulum. The children and their families will bring canned and boxed foods in to help fill the grocery cart full of good foods for those families in our community that need some help. We will talk about the first Thanksgiving and how we now celebrate the Holiday by having a special meal with our family and friends and express our thanks for the many blessings we are given daily. At the end of our food drive we will celebrate with our traditional “Tasting Party” the days before Thanksgiving so we can share a meal with our friends and teachers and give thanks for all the fun things we do each day and the many new friends we have made.

Young House Family Services is offering a FREE Parenting Class to all of our families once again

and we would like to invite any of you new, already parenting and looking for new ideas, or

“grand”parents again, to come to these classes. This is targeted to 3 and 5 year olds,

but can be adapted to all ages! There is a free support manual that goes with the

program. “Raising a Thinking Child: I Can Problem Solve!” was developed with 25

years of research. Times and location to be announced. If you are interested, you can contact

Joanie Juvinal at 319-457-1752 or Ms. Margie at 319-754-7591 ext. 2. .

It was so nice to see all the children dressed up for Trunk-or-Treat last month and all the congregational and preschool families that were gracious hosts and set up their trunks to pass out candy. This year’s event was by far one of our biggest with 150-170 children (We lost count of all the princesses, ghosts, and other masked trick-or-treaters!). Thank you for making this outreach ministry possible!

As we move past Halloween and look towards time together with our families during Thanksgiving and Advent, here are a couple reminders of upcoming activities.

Sunday school students are working on making placemats for Thanksgiving Eve worship. Be sure to join us November 23rd and see all their work!

Practice for the Christmas program will begin soon during Sunday school. Please make sure your child is at Sunday school so they can be a part of this time. The Christmas program will be held on December 11th during the 10:30 a.m. worship service with a simple play and music they have been working hard on with Marcia Taeger.

We will also be sponsoring Adopt-a-Family tree for Christmas. Any member that would like to be considered for adoption, please see Kelly. Names and family information (congregational or community) is kept strictly confidential. We receive families from Community Action that are unable to participate in Toys for Tots.

Blessings, Kelly

Psalm 24 begins, “The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it, the world, and those who live in it”. Messiah continues to grow our commitment to a holy life in God’s holy world. We continue to support our Liberian students, and we are now offering financial support to Messiah preschool students affiliated with our congregation. Our Thanksgiving Eve service, Wednesday evening, November 23, we will collect money to support the orphan school in Arusha, Tanzania, started by Messiah members Lotegeluaki Lengai and his wife, Wendy Lotegeluaki. Come for the slide show and the Tanzanian hymns!

Did you know we are also working to become a more ecologically responsible congregation? Committed to the care of God’s creation, we are making good decisions for our facility and campus. When we repaired our building four years ago, our building committee put in energy star certified windows and doors. We have replaced all the sanctuary lighting with LED bulbs, and our new sanctuary fans are energy star certified. Property committee is now waiting for a first bid on an engineering study to replace our aging boiler and energy-inefficient air conditioning systems. You might enjoy being a part of this committee!

Our landscapers have planted over a dozen trees on the Messiah campus in the last several years. Our trees are the No. 1 way we remove carbon from the atmosphere and store it for the long term. And we are now a nationally certified monarch butterfly waystation. Landscapers have been grow-ing pollinator gardens that feed butterflies, bees and helpful insects, and maintaining our walking paths for the neighbors who walk here. We will install bike racks near the west entrance next year, and property committee is considering creating a storm water retention area, called a rain garden, at the east end of the church parking lot.

Matt Mitchell uses a mulching mower to return grass clippings to the soil. Jill Fuqua collects and recycles paper, bottles and cans from the church office and kitchen. And just this fall, council authorized a Columbarium Task Force to research a proposal for a cemetery for ashes here at the church. Cremation is an increasingly popular, ecologically aware choice for our last resting places.

How else would you like to see Messiah care for the earth and for the property under our care? Come talk about it—you will please both yourself and our Creator. Pastor Susanne+

Lutheran World Relief has worked in Haiti since 1997, and since Hurricane Matthew, has launched an emergency response that will bring 7,000 people in south Haiti temporary shelter, hygiene and food, after the storm brought as much as 24 inches of rain in 24 hours. Fishing villages along the coast were destroyed, livestock drowned, and crops of banana, peanuts and sweet potato, ready for harvest, were lost.

Two weeks ago, LWR shipped 100 community water filtration units, essential for cholera prevention, and will be distributing seeds, tools, and fishing equipment. LWR has worked in Haiti since 1997 to support farmers, increase food security, strengthen agricultural cooperatives and promote reforestation in northern Haiti. To give to LWR’s relief fund, please visit lwr.org/donate/hurricane-matthew, or write a check to the church, noting “Hurricane Matthew – LWR Haiti Fund” on your check.
