    Just so theres no confuson

Billy and Bubba, were walking home together after each had purchased a pig. Billy

said to Bubba, "How are we going to tell them apart?" Bubba answered, "We'll cut

the left ear off of your pig." And so they did. After a while, the pigs got into a fight and

they had bitten off each others ears. Billy asked, "Now what are we going to do?"

"Well, how about if we cut the tail off of my pig?" Bubba replied. "That sounds like a

good plan to me," Billy agreed. A little while later, the pigs got into another fight, and

when it was over, they were both missing their tails. "What will we do now?" Bubba

asked Billy. After giving it some thought, Billy replied, "Well, we could cut the leg off

of yours." "That's not humane!" Bubba cried. So after some more thought, Billy said,

"Well, let's do this. We'll just call the white one yours and the black one mine."

    Celebratng Ronscontrbutons

The City of Merritt will celebrate RonSherwoods years of civic service onMonday, March 25, 10am in CouncilChambers, where he will be presented aNote of Appreciation by Mayor & Coun-cil, for his years on City Council.

Ron served 16 years on Council: 1987-1990, and1997-2008. He was a drivingforce behind the Liquid Waste Mgt Plan, and a member of several Council Com-

mittees, including the Heritage Commis-sion. Prior to his role as a city councillor,he served as a volunteer firefighter formany years.

Ron contributed to the governanceand safety of our community over themany years he lived and owned a busi-ness in Merritt. He & Joan retired to Vic-toria last year, but returns often to visitfamily and friends.

Rons real contrbuton to MerrttThe statistical record doesnt begin to

paint the real picture of Ron Sherwoodas a civic servant in this town. He holdsthe title of most popular city council-lor, garnering the popular vote at eachelection during his last 3 terms in office.

He was always vocal during councilmeetings, posing questions to draw outinformation about what was being dis-

cussed, so that the facts & discussioncould be understood by the viewing pub-lic. He always posited alternatives, oftenthinking out loud about potential pitfallsor merits of one solution or another, andlooked at an issue from all perspectives.

Ron never shirked from stopping todiscuss the concerns of any Merrittonian. He lived a very public life, attendingcommunity events, and was always ac-cessible to anyone who wanted to talk tohim. He wasnt afraid to admit he didntknow the answer to a question, butpromised hed find out & get back to theperson and he always did. He also be-lieved in consulting all those involved inan issue before making any decisions. His method was to work with people for the best possible outcome for all involved.

Ron was from a time when public service meant serving; when promising to dosomething meant actually following through with it; and when being responsible forsnow removal meant mobilizing the plows when it started to snow no matter thetime of day, scraping it into piles in the middle of the streets & hauling it away!

So, stop in on Monday, and say thanks to Ron for his dedication to our town. Hesthe one to thank when we remember the good old days when they plowed the snowaway from the curb, loaded it into trucks, and actually removed it. Thanks for every-thing, Ron! Kim Leclair

NVTUs wf resolutons abandonedResolutions regarding limiting wireless networks in schools, proposed by the NV

Teachers' Union, evidently never really got off the ground during the BC Teachers'Federation AGM last weekend.

Several contentious resolutions suggesting health hazards from wireless technolo-gies in school were abandoned Monday before they could be debated at the BCTFannual general meeting. Resolutions called on boards of education to stop installingwireless networks in schools where other networking technology is feasible and todesignate one school at elementary, middle and secondary levels to be free of wi-fifor educators and families who are worried about possible health effects.

The resolutions were divisive, and debate was fierce on Twitter before the issue hitthe convention floor. Those who supported the resolutions said exposure to electro-magnetic fields may be responsible for various ailments among teachers and students, such as headaches, nausea, vertigo, anxiety and fatigue. They also complained thatthe Education Ministry was pushing wi-fi installation without consulting teachers.

Others said such claims are groundless and noted that Health Canada takes theposition that low-level exposure to radio-frequency energy from wireless connectionsis not dangerous. Wi-Fi exposure levels are typically well below Canadian and in-ternational exposure limits, and there is no convincing evidence that they are a healthhazard, it states on its website.
