In the Gospel this weekend, Jesus says “You are the salt of the Earth, You are the light of the world.” In these phrases, Jesus describes the identity and mission of his followers “Your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly father.” This is the life and calling for all Christians. This is a reverse side to Jesus’s message. You don’t need light on a bright sunny day. You don’t need salt when your food is seasoned the way it should be. The reverse side of the need for light is that there is darkness to find our way through. And salt, used in the days before fridges, was to stop food from spoiling/rotting. Jesus’s words about salt & light comes in his ser-mon on the Mount. In the sermon, Jesus is saying that the meek will inherit the earth, not the rich & powerful. Jesus says our words and speech matter. We are not meant to hide the truth with empty phrases or double meaning. Je-sus says that the way of peacemaking and reconciliation, of faithfulness in relationships, of love for enemies and prayer for persecutors is what it means to live as salt and light. When it comes to salt & light, very little of these are needed for these elements to accomplish their purpose. One candle can transform a dark room, but too much light can damage or hurt our eyes. A small amount of salt can bring out the flavor in food , but too much salt can make the food not good to eat. What is required here is balance in regards to salt and light. Our task each day is to do the work that God has given us to do with intention, with pur-pose, and with confidence. Jesus shows us a way to be human-forgiveness, holiness, generosity and the courage and strength to do it. We are given a chance each day to show the world that the church is a living and real presence of God who gave him-self in love for the world. Each day, let the love of God radiate in us and be a people of hope.
