Central Oklahoma is in its first year as a member of the Mid-Amer-ica Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

The MIAA, a 15-member conference of NCAA Division II insti-tutions in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma, was first or-ganized in 1912 as the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

Over the past 100 years, the MIAA has gained the reputation of be-ing one of the top NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. MIAA schools have won 15 NCAA team championships and, since 1964, over 160 individual national titles.

The MIAA currently conducts champi-onships in eight sports for men and nine for women.

For the men, champions are crowned in football, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, baseball, tennis and golf.

The women compete for titles in vol-leyball, cross country, soccer, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, softball, golf and tennis.

The MIAA turned a new page on July 1, 1992, when the NCAA Division II confer-ence changed its name from the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

The decision to make the change originated in 1989, when Pittsburg State and Washburn became the first schools outside the state of Mis-souri to gain membership in the MIAA.

The conference was first organized in 1912 with 14 member institu-tions. Of those original members, Central Missouri, Truman State and Northwest Missouri State still remain a part of the MIAA.

The first change in membership came in 1924, when the MIAA reorganized to include only the five regional Missouri state colleges: Central Missouri, Truman (at the time known as Northeast Missouri

the mid-ameriCa interCOllegiate athletiCs assOCiatiOn State), Northwest Missouri, Southeast Missouri State and Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State).

Over the next 56 years, three schools joined the membership: Mis-souri School of Mines (later Missouri-Rolla) in 1935, Lincoln in 1970 and the Missouri-St. Louis in 1980.

Ken Jones became the first full-time commissioner of the MIAA in 1981 and would be in the position for 16 years, retiring in 1997. Ralph McFillen succeeded Jones, serving 10 years before his retire-

ment in 2007.Jim Johnson succeeded McFillen in

July of that year and served as commis-sioner until September of 2010, when Dr. Bob Boerigter took over.

Southwest Baptist brought member-ship back to eight schools in 1986, be-fore the major expansion of the confer-ence in 1989. Pittsburg State, Washburn, Missouri Southern and Missouri West-ern began competition in the 1989-90 season.

Southeast Missouri State left the MIAA following the 1990-91 season and was replaced by Emporia State in the 1991-92 season.

Missouri-St. Louis departed the MIAA in 1996, Missouri-Rolla left in

2005 and Lincoln forfeited its membership in 1999. Fort Hays State joined the MIAA in 2006, NebraskaOmaha entered the league in 2008 and Lincoln re-joined the conference in 2010.

On July 29, 2010, the MIAA CEO Council voted to extend invi-tations to UCO and Northeastern State to become members of the league and on Sept. 24, 2010 it voted to extend invitations to Nebras-ka-Kearney and Lindenwood.

Nebraska-Omaha left the league in 2011 and Truman State will do the same next year, which will leave 14 schools in the MIAA.

sChool nICkname“Bronchos” was the nickname selected for Central Oklahoma

in 1922 by Mrs. C.W. Wantland, wife of long-time UCO football coach C.W. Wantland. The name was chosen from a number of suggestions for the name of UCO’s football team and became the nickname for all athletic teams at the school.

Mrs. Wantland was made an honorary member of the Letterman’s Club as a result of selecting the nickname, becoming the first woman admitted to that organization. sChool Colors

Bronze and blue were chosen as Central Oklahoma’s school colors early in the fall of 1895 by school president Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh.

The first public display of the bronze and blue was in Guthrie when a student represented UCO in the first oratorical contest ever held in Oklahoma. on The Cover

He returned to coaching as an assistant at Edmond Santa Fe High School, spending the 1995-96 season there before taking over as head coach at Chickasha High School.

Evans was 9-13 in one year with the Fighting Chicks before going to Midwest City High School and leading the Bombers to a phenomenal 100-11 record and three Class 6A state championships in four years.

His first team went 25-3 and won the state crown in 1997-98, with the Bombers going 23-4 and losing in the state semifinals the following year. Evans led Midwest City to back-to-back 26-2 campaigns and consecutive state titles his final two years before going to OU.

Evans also had great success as a player, first at Millwood High School and then at OU.

He led Millwood to three state titles and was an All-State pick as a senior and then started throughout most of his four-year career at OU, helping the Sooners win 88 games in that span.

He played in 123 games and finished as OU’s career leader in 3-pointers (259), 3-point attempts (698) and as-sists (651).

A three-time Academic All-Big Eight selection, Terry earned honorable men-tion All-Big Eight acclaim his final two seasons and averaged a career-high 14.0 points a game as a senior.

Evans graduated from OU with a de-gree in business management and later earned a master’s in human relations.

Terry is married (Terri) and has two children (Carli and Tre).

terry evansNow in his 11th year at the helm of the

Central Oklahoma program is Terry Evans, a former college standout who has built the Bronchos into a perennial NCAA Division II power.

Evans is 208-90 in 10 years at UCO and has directed the Bronchos to seven national tournament appearances, includ-ing one Elite Eight and one Sweet 16. He also led the team to six Lone Star Confer-ence North Division titles and two overall league crowns during Central’s association

with that league.Evans has had six 20-win seasons in the past eight years -- including

a school-record 30-win campaign in 2010-11 -- and coached 14 All-LSC North Division players while earning LSC North Division Coach of the Year honors five times and South Central Regional Coach of the Year accolades once.

Terry took over the helm in 2002-03 and guided UCO to a 19-10 campaign and the school’s first national tournament berth since 1998.

The Bronchos fell to 11-17 in 2003-04, but bounced back the follow-ing season to go 22-8 and make it to the second round of the national tournament after capturing the LSC North Division title.

UCO claimed a share of its second straight LSC North championship and returned to the national playoffs in 2005-06, then missed out on a third straight LSC North title and were denied a national tournament berth the next year despite a 20-8 record.

Evans and the Bronchos enjoyed one of the best seasons in school history in 2007-08, with the Bronchos finishing 28-6.

UCO took the LSC North title, swept three games at the LSC Tourna-ment to claim the overall conference championship and followed with a three-game run at the South Central Regional, pulling out a last-second finals win to claim its first regional title since 1992.

That earned the Bronchos a trip to Springfield, Mass. for the Elite Eight, with UCO dropping a heartbreaking double-overtime decision to eventual national runner-up Augusta State in the quarterfinals.

The Bronchos continued their dominance of the LSC North Division the next season in making it back to the national tournament before los-ing in the first round to end a 24-6 campaign.

UCO captured its third consecutive LSC North crown and again made it to the Division II playoffs in 2009-10, finishing 22-7 after a first-round loss.

Evans directed UCO to a school-record 30 wins in 2010-11, with the Bronchos finishing 30-4 in making it to the Sweet 16.

Central won its fourth straight LSC North title, rolled to the LSC Tournament championship to claim the overall league crown and then hosted the South Central Regional for the first time since 1993. UCO won its first two games to advance to the finals, but lost a tough decision to Midwestern State before an overflow crowd at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos went 15-11 last year despite playing one of the toughest schedules in school history while competing as an indepedent.

A highly-successful high school skipper whose father (Eddie) coached the Bronchos from 1978-82, Terry came to UCO after serving as direc-tor of basketball operations at the University of Oklahoma in 2001-02.

He handled the day-to-day administrative duties in addition to several other assignments as the Sooners went 31-5, won the Big 12 Conference Tournament title and made their first Final Four appearance since 1988.

Evans started his coaching career as an assistant at Texas Christian, spending the fall of 1994 with the Horned Frogs before going to Mexico to play professionally.

rodney dindy

Rodney Dindy is in his fifth year as Central Oklahoma’s full-time assistant coach, coming to the Bronchos after a highly-successful career as head coach at Midwest City High School.

Dindy has helped UCO to a sparkling 91-28 record the last four years, with the Bronchos having made three NCAA Division II national tournament appearances. The 2010-11 team won a school-record 30 games (30-4) and ended the season ranked No. 4 nationally in making the Sweet 16 before falling in the finals of the South Central Regional.

Dindy started his coaching career as a volunteer assistant at Midwest City in 1996, then served as the Bombers’ full-time assistant from 1997-01 for UCO head coach Terry Evans.

Rodney helped lead Midwest City to a 100-11 record in that four-year span, with the Bombers winning three Class 6A state championships.

Dindy took over the Midwest City program in 2001 and put together a 140-50 record over the next seven seasons. He led the Bombers to three Mid-State Conference titles and five state tournament appearances, with the 2007 team going 27-1 in winning the Class 6A state title.

Dindy was a two-time Mid-State Conference Coach of the Year winner and coached in the 2007 All-State games.Rodney, a product of Sasakwa (Okla.) High School, is a 1992 graduate of East Central. He is married (Ramona) and has four children (Khalil,

Raven, Rachael and LaBria).

Helping out the Central Oklahoma program as a student assistant coach is Javvero Baker, who ended a two-year career with the Bronchos last season.

Baker came to UCO after spending two years at Northeast-ern Oklahoma A&M and was a key reserve for the Bronchos the past two years, seeing part-time starting duty during his

senior campaign in 2011-12.A local product of Edmond Santa Fe High School, Baker helped lead the Wolves

Serving as a student assistant coach for Central Oklahoma in 2012-13 is former standout player Brent Friday.

Friday finished up his career with the Bronchos last season, when he led the team in scoring (14.4 ppg), rebounding (5.4 rpg) and field goal percentage (58.7). He was a second-team All-Independents Collegiate Athletic Association selection.

Friday was a part-time starter while battling an assortment of injuries his first two years and then averaged 11.3 points and 4.8 rebounds a game as a junior in 2010-11 to help UCO win a school-record 30 games in making the Sweet 16.

Cormier is a versatile guard capable of running the of-fense while also giving the Bronchos another dangerous outside scoring threat.

UCO has two other returners in redshirt freshmen Seth Heckart (6-0, 175) and Jacob Strassle (6-3, 205), with both expected to push for major minutes after picking up much-needed experience last year.

The other eight players on the roster are newcom-ers, led by a trio of junior transfers ready to vie for playing time.

Nic Combs (6-0, 175) and Josh Gibbs (6-5, 235) are Division I move-ins

who should provide immediate help, while Christian Huffman (6-5, 175) is coming off a fine junior col-

lege career and should be a valu-able addition.

Several of the freshmen will be asked to contribute right away, with Cal Andrews (6-7, 200), Garrett Hermanski (6-5, 190),

Rico Hogan (6-0, 180), Gabe Houston (5-9, 160) and D.J. Ma-

hone (6-4, 210) all capable of doing just that.

“Our goals are to be the best that we can be every day,” Evans said. “We want to defend and rebound every possession. If we do the little things, then the big things will fall into place.

“And by big things, we mean win-ning the MIAA title, earning an NCAA

berth and making another trip to the Elite Eight to win our first national champion-

ship.”UCO has more wins (119) over the past

five years than anybody else in the 15-team MIAA, but that success didn’t impress many people in the pre-season polls, with the

Bronchos predicted to finish seventh by league head coaches and ninth by conference media members.

“We definitely feel a little disrespected, but I guess we’ll have to earn our respect in a new

league,” said Evans, whose team went 4-1 against the MIAA last year. “We know it’s a great conference and we’re excited to be a part of it.”

new league doesn’t mean new goals for Central Oklahoma in 2012-13, with the Bronchos look-ing to enjoy the same level of success in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athlet-

ics Association that they did in the Lone Star Conference.

UCO ended its long association with the LSC in 2011 after winning four consecutive North Division titles, and making four straight trips to the NCAA Division II national tournament, including an Elite Eight appearance in 2008 and a Sweet 16 showing in 2011.

Now, after spending the 2011-12 season as an inde-pendent, the Bronchos are ready for their initial season in the MIAA.

“This team has a chance to be as good as any team we’ve had here at UCO,” said head coach Terry Evans, who enters his 11th year at the helm with a 208-90 ca-reer record. “On paper, they have more potential than any past team, but we have to play hard, play smart and play together for 40 minutes in order to reach our goals.”

Leading UCO’s quest for success this season will be five seniors, only two of whom played for the Bronchos last season.

Josh Davis (6-5, 250) and Spencer Smith (6-6, 220) were part-time starters on last year’s 15-11 team, while June Carter (6-7, 200) and Antonio Ross (6-7-230) redshirted after both played key roles on the 2010-11 squad that won a school-record 30 games. Jamell Cormier (6-0, 180) is a transfer who joined the team after sitting out last season.

The 6-foot-5 Davis is a rugged, physical presence in the paint who averaged 5.8 points and 3.6 rebounds a game last season, with the Bronchos looking for him to be even more of an inside force this winter.

Smith netted 8.7 points and 3.1 rebounds a contest a year ago and came on strong down the stretch after assuming a starting role. He’s an inside-outside scoring threat ready to take his game to a new level this winter.

The lanky Carter averaged 5.4 points and 4.0 rebounds a game as a part-time starter in 2010-11 to help UCO reach the Sweet 16 and is a smooth ball-handler with good shooting range.

Ross also saw some starting duty on that record-setting team while averaging 3.1 points and 2.4 rebounds a game

2011-12 Review

One streak continued and another ended for Central Oklahoma in 2011-12 as the Bronchos played a rugged schedule while competing as an NCAA Division II independent.

UCO finished 15-11 for their eight consecutive winning season, but had a string of five straight 20-plus win campaigns stopped in the transition year between leaving the Lone Star Conference and joining the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

The Bronchos had just seven home games last season and played nine of 10 games away from Hamilton Field House during one stretch.

half scoring spurt that enabled Central Oklahoma to regain control and the No. 11-ranked Bronchos went on to roll over Northwestern Oklahoma 77-58 on the first day of the SWOSU Chamber of Commerce Classic.

UCO never trailed after jumping to a quick 5-0 lead, but the Rangers trimmed a 14-point deficit to just six at 43-37 with 15:17 left to play before Davis sparked the deciding run with five points and a pair of steals.

Ten players scored for the Bronchos, with Johnny Stephene hitting 7-of-8 free throws in a team-high 14-point outing off the bench.

UCO 82, liNCOlN 67WEATHERFORD, Okla. (Nov. 12) -- Tucker Phillips sparked a first-half

run that gave No. 11-ranked Central Oklahoma the lead for the good and the Bronchos went on to cruise past Lincoln 82-67 on the final day of the SWOSU Chamber of Commerce Classic.

The game was tied 14-all when Phillips hit a 3-pointer to ignite a 9-1 scoring spurt that gave UCO a 24-15 lead en route to a 46-36 halftime advantage and the lead never dipped below double digits in the final 20 minutes.

sOUthwesteRN OklahOma 76, UCO 70EDMOND (Nov. 15) -- Slow-starting Central Oklahoma played from behind

nearly the entire game and had a late-game rally fall short at Hamilton Field House as the No. 11-ranked Bronchos were upended by Southwestern Oklahoma 76-70.

UCO shot just 37.3 percent (19-of-51) from the floor and never got in an of-fensive flow during the physical contest that saw the teams combine for 61 fouls.

taRletON state 87, UCO 65STEPHENVILLE, Texas (Nov. 18) -- A showdown between two perennial

NCAA Division II powers never materialized as No. 11-ranked Central Oklahoma couldn’t recover from a slow start in falling to No. 8 Tarleton State 87-65 on the first day of the Tarleton Tip-off Classic.

UCO 91, CameRON 81STEPHENVILLE, Texas (Nov. 19) – Tyler Phillips scored 18 of his game-

high 26 points in the first half and No. 11-ranked Central Oklahoma built a big second-half lead before holding on down the stretch to down Cameron 91-81 on the second day of the Tarleton Tip-off Classic.

Phillips had six 3-pointers in the opening 20 minutes as the Bronchos built a 45-35 lead and UCO was ahead by 28 (76-48) midway through the second half. The Aggies went on a 30-7 run to pull within five (83-78) with 1:03 remaining, but the Bronchos went to the free throw line to put the game away.

UCO 79, PittsbURg state 72PITTSBURG, Kan. (Nov. 22) – Josh Davis and Tyler Phillips combined for

23 second-half points to spark Central Oklahoma past pesky Pittsburg State 79-72. Davis had 12 of his 16 points and Phillips all 11 of his in the final 20 minutes,

with the Bronchos using a 10-0 run down the stretch to put the game away.Davis was 7-of-8 from the field in his 16-point outing that led the Bronchos

and he added a team-high eight rebounds, while Shane Carroll had all 14 of his points in the first half before missing most of the second with a hand injury.

emPORia state 71, UCO 70BOLIVAR, Mo. (Nov. 25) -- Emporia State made two free throws with just

five seconds left to hand Central Oklahoma a heart-breaking 71-70 setback on the first day of the SBU Thanksgiving Classic.

BOLIVAR, Mo. (Nov. 26) -- Tyler Phillips and Brent Friday combined for 34 points and 19 rebounds to lead No. 11-ranked Central Oklahoma to a 77-66 victory over host Southwest Baptist on the final day of the SBU Thanksgiving Classic.

The Bronchos bolted to an early 7-0 lead, went up 47-34 by halftime and then overcame a second-half SBU rally to earn the win. Phillips scored a game-high 18 points while adding eight rebounds, with Friday netting 16 points and 11 boards.

UCO 84, sCieNCe & aRts Of OklahOma 56EDMOND (Nov. 29) – Shane Carroll ignited an early-game scoring spurt that

put Central Oklahoma in control and the Bronchos went on to throttle Science and Arts of Oklahoma 84-56 at Hamilton Field House in a bizarre contest that saw both teams end the game with four players on the floor.

Carroll scored eight straight points at the start of a 14-0 run that snapped an 11-11 tie and UCO went on to seize a 22-point halftime lead before coasting in.

The game was marred by a bench-clearing brawl with 4:54 left to play, which resulted in massive ejections for both teams. USAO lost 10 players and the Bronchos eight, with each team ending the game with four players.

Brent Friday led a balanced attack with his second straight double-double, finishing with game highs in points (16) and rebounds (10).

UCO 79, aRkaNsas teCh 68EDMOND (Dec. 3) – Brent Friday and Johnny Stephene scored 16 points

apiece to lead another balanced attack and Central Oklahoma upended No. 15-ranked Arkansas Tech 79-68 at Hamilton Field House to hand head coach Terry Evans his 200th career win.

All five starters scored in double figures for the Bronchos, who led 36-26 at halftime and were up by as many as 19 in the second half before staving off ATU’s late comeback try and closing out their third straight win.

Friday was 5-of-6 from the field and 6-of-9 from the line in his 16-point outing, while Stephene made all five field goals and 4-of-5 foul shots.

sOUthwesteRN OklahOma 75, UCO 67WEATHERFORD, Okla. (Dec. 6) – Crucial free throw misses down the

stretch helped spell Central Oklahoma’s demise here Tuesday night as the Bronchos fell to Southwestern Oklahoma 75-67.

UCO trailed by eight points (67-59) with 3:05 left to play before going on a 7-0 run to make it 67-66 with 1:31 remaining, but the Bronchos made just 1-of-5 free throws in the final 47.7 seconds and SWOSU scored the final six points.

aRkaNsas teCh 54, UCO 53RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. (Dec. 10) – Central Oklahoma never trailed in a

defensive battle with No. 25-ranked Arkansas Tech until the Wonder Boys hit a last-second 3-pointer to hand the Bronchos a tough 54-53 loss.

UCO led by nine (27-18) at halftime and it the first tie came with 35 seconds left when ATU scored. The Wonder Boys took their first lead on a 3-pointer with nine seconds left to make it 54-51 and the Bronchos weren’t able to get off a tying 3-point try, with Josh Davis scoring at the buzzer to arrange the final margin.

ChRistiaN bROtheRs 81, UCO 62LAS VEGAS, Nev. (Dec. 17) – A 10-minute dry spell to end the first half and

open the second turned the tide and Central Oklahoma couldn’t recover against sharp-shooting Christian Brothers in dropping an 81-62 decision on the first day of the Division II Holiday Hoops Classic here.

The Bronchos led 32-23 with 4:42 left in the opening half, but CBU went on a 28-6 run over the next 10 minutes to go on top 51-38 barely six minutes into the second half and UCO never got closer than 11 the rest of the way.

UCO 72, wilmiNgtON 63LAS VEGAS, Nev. (Dec. 18) – Shane Carroll scored seven of his season-high

22 points during a 9-0 run early in the second half that put Central Oklahoma in control and the Bronchos went on to topple Wilmington 72-63 on the second day of the Division II Holiday Hoops Classic.

Carroll was 4-of-6 from long range in his 22-point outing to lead four players in double figures. Spencer Smith came up big with season highs in points (13) and rebounds (game-high 12), while Brent Friday had 14 points and Tyler Phillips 10.

hillsdale 79, UCO 62QUINCY, Ill. (Dec. 30) -- Poor shooting put Central Oklahoma in an early

hole and the Bronchos never recovered in falling to Hillsdale (Mich.) 79-62 in the first round of the Quincy/Subway Holiday Tournament.

UCO never led after the Chargers hit a 3-pointer 14 seconds into the contest and the Bronchos shot just 34.6 percent (18-of-52) from the field.

QUiNCy 78, UCO 71QUINCY, Ill. (Dec. 31) -- A big lead turned into an eight-point deficit during

a second-half stretch and Central Oklahoma went on to drop a 78-71 decision to host Quincy in the consolation game of the Quincy/Subway Holiday Tournament.

The Bronchos appeared in control after Brent Friday’s dunk gave them a 58-44 cushion with 10:58 left to play, but UCO made just two of its next 13 shots and the hot-shooting Hawks went on a 29-7 run to take a 73-65 lead with 54 seconds left.

midwesteRN state 80, UCO 61EDMOND (Jan. 5) – Short-handed Central Oklahoma grabbed an early lead

and hung with No. 16-ranked Midwestern State for 25 minutes before the un-beaten Mustangs surged back to beat the Bronchos 80-61 at Hamilton Field House.

UCO led by 10 points eight minutes into the contest and were up 44-39 with 16:19 left to play before MSU unleashed an 18-0 run over the next five-plus minutes to grab a 13-point lead and take control of the contest.

UCO 64, NORtheasteRN state 53 TAHLEQUAH, Okla. (Jan. 12) – Brent Friday hit back-to-back 3-pointers in

a 13-0 run to open the second half that got Central Oklahoma back in the game and the Bronchos went on to rally past Northeastern State 64-53.

The RiverHawks led 30-18 at halftime, but Friday’s outside marksmanship keyed the spurt that gave UCO a brief 31-30 lead and the Bronchos went ahead to stay later in the half with an 8-0 run en route to ending a three-game losing streak.

liNdeNwOOd 88, UCO 58ST. CHARLES, Mo. (Jan. 19) – A 10-minute scoring slump turned an eight-

point first-half lead into a 15-point second-half deficit and Central Oklahoma went on to drop an 88-58 decision to Lindenwood

UCO 80, aRkaNsas-fORt smith 59 FORT SMITH, Ark. (Jan. 25) – Brent Friday scored 10 points during a 27-2

run that put Central Oklahoma in control and Tyler Phillips reached a scoring mile-stone to lead Central Oklahoma to an 80-59 thumping of Arkansas-Fort Smith.

Phillips led the Bronchos with 18 points in becoming the 39th player in school history to score 1,000 career points, reaching the magic number on a trey late in the first half. The Bronchos also got 17 points from Friday.

UCO 59, NORtheasteRN state 52EDMOND (Jan. 28) – A scintillating second-half performance by Brent

Friday rescued Central Oklahoma from a severe shooting slump and propelled the Bronchos past Northeastern State 59-52 at Hamilton Field House.

Friday scored 13 straight points during an amazing four-minute sequence midway through the second half as UCO overcame a six-point deficit to claim the win. The senior guard scored 19 of his team-high 21 points in the final half while adding eight rebounds and three assists.

UCO 72, CeNtRal missOURi 71WARRENSBURG, Mo. (Feb. 14) -- Brent Friday scored the last of his

career-high 27 points with three seconds remaining to lift Central Oklahoma to a 72-71 upset of No. 25-ranked Central Missouri.

The Bronchos overcame a 13-point first-half deficit to pull out their fourth straight victory and improve to 13-10 in the Valentine’s Day showdown against their future Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association rival.

The Mules scored with seven seconds left to move in front 71-70, but Friday drove in and converted at 0:03 to give UCO back the lead. UCM took a quick timeout and then missed a long 3-point try at the buzzer as the Bronchos held on.

Friday was brilliant all night long, hitting 11-of-18 shots and all five free throw tries in his career-best night while adding seven rebounds and four assists.

UCO 68, liNdeNwOOd 56EDMOND (Feb. 16) – Central Oklahoma jumped on top early and never

trailed in toppling Lindenwood 68-56 at Hamilton Field House to avenge a 30-point road loss to the Lions on Jan. 19.

The Bronchos won for the fifth straight time in improving to 14-10 and snapped LU’s 11-game winning streak to make up for that 88-58 setback.

UCO used a swarming defensive effort to hold the Lions 32 points under their 88.0 scoring average in handing them just their third loss of the season (24-3).

Brent Friday led UCO’s balanced attack, hitting 7-of-9 shots to finish with 15 points. Josh Davis came off the bench to add 14 points and Spencer Smith had 12.

midwesteRN state 69, UCO 48WICHITA FALLS, Texas (Feb. 18) – Cold-shooting Central Oklahoma fell

behind early and never recovered in falling to Midwestern State 69-48.The Bronchos got behind 7-0 in the opening minutes and made just 5-of-20

shots to trail 31-16 by halftime in having a five-game winning streak snapped by the No. 7-ranked Mustangs, who improved to 22-2 on the year.

UCO 89, NORtheasteRN state 59EDMOND (Feb. 22) – Tyler Phillips’ early-game marksmanship put Central

Oklahoma in cruise control early and the Bronchos ran past Northeastern State 89-59 in the season finale at Hamilton Field House.

Phillips drilled four 3-pointers in first 10 minutes of the contest and UCO led by as many as 29 points in the first half en route to ending the season 15-11, with its sixth win in the last seven games.

The senior trio of Phillips, Brent Friday and Shane Carroll nearly outscored NSU themselves, combining for 54 points in their final game.

Friday racked up 26 points while adding seven rebounds, five assists and three steals. Phillips had five of UCO’s season-high 14 treys in scoring 17 points with six rebounds and Carroll had 11 points, eight boards and three assists.

Central Oklahoma has had 74 players earn all-conference honors a combined 119 times in the 86-year history of the program in the Okla-homa Intercollegiate Conference and District Nine while in the NAIA and in the Lone Star Conference and LSC North Division as members of NCAA Division II.

Only three players earned all-conference honors four times during their careers -- Bill Ballew (All-OIC in 1947, ‘48, ‘49 and ‘50), Wesley

Clark (All-District Nine in 1976, ‘77, ‘78 and ‘79) and Sam Belt (All-LSC North Division in 2005, ‘06, ‘07 and ‘08) -- with each being a first-time selection three times and a second-time pick once.

Five players were three-time all-conference picks -- Otis Delaporte (1937, ‘38 and ‘39), Larry Wood (1953, ‘54 and ‘55), Leo Holland (1956, ‘57 and ‘58), Bryce Vann (1959, ‘60 and ‘61) and Alfred Murrell (1965, ‘66 and ‘67).

1937-38UCO earned its first-ever national tournament in 1938, opening the

NAIA meet with a 43-34 win over Arkansas Teachers before being eliminated by Ambrose (Iowa), 38-36, in the second round.

1938-39The Bronchos made a repeat trip to the NAIA National Tournament

in 1939, but were ousted by Manchester (Ind.), 53-50, in the first round.

1958-59UCO ended a 20-year national tournament drought in 1959 with its

third NAIA appearance. The Bronchos defeated Kentucky State 72-65 in the opening round before being knocked out by Pacific Lutheran, 68-57.

1992-93UCO hosted the South Central Regional for the first time, but lost

to Washburn 92-88 in the first round. The Bronchos ended the season with a 116-109 triumph over Missouri Southern in the third-place game.

1994-95The Bronchos followed a first-round bye in the South Central Regional

with a 94-88 win over Mississippi College before dropping a close 117-112 decision to Central Missouri in the finals.

NatioNal tourNameNt History

Central Oklahoma has qualified for the national tournament 17 times during its 86-year history -- five in NAIA and 12 in NCAA Division II, including the last four in a row. The Bronchos have an all-time record of 18-16 in national tournament games and have made four Elite Eight ap-pearances -- 1961 and 1964 in NAIA, 1992 and 2008 in Division II.

A year-by-year look at UCO in the national tournament:

1996-97UCO was the No. 1 seed in the South Central Regional, but was upset

by Pittsburg State 90-84 in the first round of the national tournament.

1997-98UCO came up short in a stirring run at the South Central Regional.

The high-scoring Bronchos clipped Texas A&M-Commerce (107-103) and Missouri Western (109-101) to make the finals before falling to host West Texas A&M, 105-101 and finish a 25-7 season.

2002-03

UCO’s first playoff appearance in five years ended with a 78-67 loss to Northeastern State in the first round of the South Central Regional.

2004-05

The Bronchos routed Washburn 84-66 in the first round of the South Central Regional before losing to host Texas A&M-Commerce 81-73 in the semifinals.

2005-06

UCO qualified for the national tournament for the second straight year, but lost a 75-68 first-round decision to Tarleton State 75-68.

2008-09

The Bronchos made their fourth national tournament appearance in five years and were eliminated in the first-round by Dallas Baptist, 89-75.

2009-10

UCO’s third consecutive Division II national tournament showing ended with an 80-64 loss to Fort Hays State in the first round of the South Central Regional.

2010-11

UCO hosted the South Central Regional for the first time since 1993 and opened with a 79-70 overtime thriller over Texas A&M International. The Bronchos beat Fort Hays State 81-69 before dropping a 73-66 decision to Midwestern State before a packed house at Hamilton Field House and finished a best-ever 30-4 on the season.

1963-64Central Oklahoma made it back to the Elite Eight again in 1964

in its final NAIA National Tournament appearance. UCO routed Cedarville (95-40) and Pacific Lutheran (84-72) before bowing to Carson-Newman, 61-55 in the quarterfinals.

President

dr. don Betz

Now in his second year as Central Oklahoma’s president is Dr. Don Betz, who became the school’s 20th president in August 2011 after having previously served as UCO’s Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs from 1999-2005.

President Betz developed several initiatives and programs that helped transform Central into one of the leading metropolitan universities in the nation during his first stint at the school and he’s been the driving force in making UCO a destination of choice in higher education since his return to campus.

President Betz has enjoyed a distinguished career in higher education that spans more than 40 years, developing a reputation for teaching and encouraging students, leadership development and diplomacy through his international activities, most notably with the United Nations and its affiliated non-government organizations.

Prior to returning to UCO, he served as president of Northeastern State, a post he held for three years. He also served as Chancellor at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls from 2005 until his appointment at NSU and as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Palmer College (Iowa) from 1994-1999.

In the 23 years prior, he fulfilled various capacities at NSU, including the Vice President of University Relations and Professor of Political Science. While at NSU, he also was the Executive Director of the Educational Foundation, Assistant to the President, Dean of Continuing Education and Special Programs, Director of the Sequoyah Institute/Center for Tribal Studies, the founder and advisor of the university’s President’s Leadership Class and its Model United Nations program.

From 1982 through 2003, President Betz worked for and with the United Nations on Middle East issues. He founded and chaired the International Coordinating Committee on the Question of Palestine (ICCP), a UN-affiliated non-governmental organization (NGO) network pursuing peace in the Middle East based on UN resolutions.

A frequent writer and speaker, Dr. Betz has addressed international, educational, motivational topics, and has worked with news-papers, radio and television. His life-long interest in global issues and his passion for promoting cross-cultural understanding has led him to more than 80 countries.

While president at NSU, he served as the chair of the Northeast Oklahoma Public Facility Authority, board member for BancFirst in Tahlequah, the Tahlequah Area Chamber of Commerce, Creative Oklahoma, Inc., and chair of the Regional University System of Oklahoma Council of Presidents. He is a member of the Oklahoma Academy, Leadership Oklahoma, Universities and Colleges President’s Climate Commitment, International Association of University Presidents and has served as Chairman of AASCU’s International Education Committee.

President Betz received his B.A. in Political Science and Philosophy from the University of San Francisco and his M.A. and Ph.D. in International Studies from the Graduate School of International Studies at the University of Denver. He also completed Harvard University’s Institute for Educational Management.

Joe mUller

Now in his fifth year as athletic director at Central Oklahoma is Joe Muller, who has helped return the Bronchos to national prominence in NCAA Division II.

UCO finished 32nd among more than 300 Division II schools in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Standings for 2011-12, the highest finish in nearly 15 years for the Bronchos, and the athletic department’s fund-raising efforts have reached new heights.

Muller brought a wealth of Division I experience when he became just the seventh athletic director in school history in July of 2008 after previous stints at Oklahoma State and Purdue.

Joe served as senior associate athletic director for external relations at Purdue for two years before coming to UCO. He oversaw all facets of external relations while at Purdue, including development, marketing and promotions and the John Purdue Club.

A graduate of Stillwater High School, Joe earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from OSU. He served as director of athletic marketing and promotions at OSU from 1985-90 and then was involved in the television industry for more than a decade.

Muller returned to Oklahoma State in 2002 as associate athletic director, serving in that capacity until going to Purdue. His duties included all development activities of the athletic department and under Muller’s watch, OSU raised over $90 million to renovate its football stadium, set football attendance records in 2003, ’04 and ’05 and had all-sport ticket revenues increase more than 115 percent.

Joe is married (Julie) and has three sons (Jaxon, Brandon and Matthew).

sCott WilliAmsScott Williams is in his third year as Central Oklahoma’s senior associate athletic director, coming to Edmond in

December of 2009 after a nearly five-year stint at Oklahoma State.His main duties include overseeing UCO’s athletic facilities and the day-to-day operations of the athletic department

and he was the event manager for three NCAA Division II regional tournaments the Bronchos hosted in 2011-12 -- soccer, wrestling and softball.

Williams was associate athletic director for compliance at OSU for three years, overseeing the entire compliance program. He spent the previous two years at OSU as assistant athletic director for compliance, with the responsibility of seven varsity programs.

Scott spent seven years as assistant athletic director for compliance at Oral Roberts before going to OSU. He was responsible for all compliance-related matters in addition to supervising eight varsity programs and coordinating all event management activities for home athletic events at ORU.

A 1995 graduate of OSU, Williams earned his Juris Doctorate from the University of Oklahoma in 1998 and worked in the University of Kansas athletic department before going to ORU.

Scott, a product of Deer Creek High School outside Edmond, is married (Tammy) and has four children (J.R., Matthew, Hannah and Luke).

dArnell smith Serving as Central Oklahoma’s Director of

Athletic Compliance is Darnell Smith, who took over the position in June of 2010 after serving in the same capacity at the University of New Mexico.

A native of San Antonio, Texas, Smith was a four-year member of the Oklahoma State football team from 2002-06 at defensive end. He was a

three-time recipient of the Arthur Ashe Scholar award at OSU and also earned second-team honors on the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America Team.

Darnell was named OSU’s Outstanding Senior and earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from there. He served as a graduate assistant in the OSU compliance office in 2007-08 and worked as a management development trainee for the United States Olympic Committee from June 2008 to February 2009.

Smith went to New Mexico in February of 2009 and was there until coming to UCO.

He is married (Candace).

GUnner PoFF Gunnar Poff is in his third year with the Central

Oklahoma Athletic Department, coordinating tick-et sales for the Bronchos while also assisting in a host of other roles related to game-day operations.

A native of Sayre, Poff earned his bachelor’s degree in health and physical education from Southwestern Oklahoma in 2007.

Gunnar was a pitcher on the baseball team while at SWOSU.

He went on to earn a master’s of education in intercollegiate athletics administration in 2009 from the University of Oklahoma, working in the office of event management during his tenure with the Sooners.

Poff is married (Tessa) and has two daughters (Presley and Piper).

BrAndon BAker In his second year with the Central Oklahoma

athletic department is Brandon Baker, who is responsible for corporate sponsorships and mar-keting for athletic events on the UCO campus, working with local, regional and national busi-nesses to create memorable experiences for both fans and sponsors.

Baker was at the Oklahoma City RedHawks for 10 years before coming to UCO, working with corporate sponsorships, baseball operations, game-day experience and ticket office manager. He spent two years prior to that with the West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx, a minor league affiliate of the Chicago Cubs.

A native of Fulton, Mo., Baker is a University of Missouri graduate and was involved with the Mizzou chapter of Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Baker is married (Erin) and has two sons (Benjamin and Evan).

Britni BrAnnon New to the Central Oklahoma Athletic Depart-

ment is Britni Brannon, who took over as business manager in the fall of 2012.

An Oklahoma native, Brannon graduated from UCO in 2002 and spent the next five years work-ing for an audio/visual company doing marketing, advertising and materials management.

A Certified Procurement Officer with the State of Oklahoma, Brannon returned to UCO in 2007 as a Buyer II in the Purchasing, Payment Services & Travel department and was in that capacity until moving to the athletic department.

Britni is married (Todd) and has one son (Alex).

The Central Oklahoma Athletic Media Relations Office is under the direction of Mike Kirk, whose main duty is to keep local, state and national media informed about UCO’s 14 varsity sports.

Kirk is in his 26th year with the Bronchos, coming to UCO in November 1987.

Mike started his career in sports information as a student assistant at Oklahoma State University, where he worked for four years before graduating in 1982 with a journalism degree.

He was a sports writer at newspapers in McAlester and Lawton for five years before starting his UCO career on Nov. 2, 1987.

An active member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) who has served on several committees during his career, Kirk worked as the Press Information Manager for wrestling at the 1996 Olympic Games.

He is in his third year as a member of the NCAA Wrestling Championships Committee, serving as the chair of the Division II Committee in 2012-13. Kirk was inducted into the Oklahoma Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame for Lifetime Achievement in the fall of 2012.

Kirk has received 58 CoSIDA publication awards at UCO, including 27 Best in the Nation citations.

Mike is married (Debbie) and has two children (Alex and Jessica).

New to the Central Oklahoma Athletic Depart-ment is veteran broadcaster David Garrett, who serves as the Media Specialist for the Bronchos.

Garrett oversees future creation and production of UCO Athletics’ enhanced presence on the inter-net, radio, and television. He has been UCO’s foot-ball radio play-by-play announcer since 2007, add-ing men’s and women’s basketball in recent years.

A native of Henryetta, Garrett began his play-by-play career in high school and through a 37-year career called college games in various sports for

Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and others in addition to doing dozens of high school championships and all-star games.

Garrett also served as the voice of the New Orleans Saints in 1992 and the Dallas Cowboys in 1995, winning the 1996 KATIE Award from the Dallas Press Club for his broadcast of the Cowboys’ 27-17 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XXX.

Garrett also won “Best Play-By-Play/Large Market” from the Oklaho-ma Association of Broadcasters for his UCO football broadcasts in 2008, ’09, and ’10.

David, who is working to complete his bachelor’s degree in organi-zational leadership at UCO, is married (Rajeana) and has two daughters (Allison and Alicia).

Central Oklahoma plays all its home basketball games inside Hamilton Field House, which opened its doors on Jan. 8, 1965 when the UCO men’s team downed intrastate rival Northeastern State 64-52.

The Bronchos have a 423-167 (.717) home record in 48 and 1/2 years at Hamilton Field House, including an impressive 251-40 mark (.863) over the past 23 seasons. UCO has won 74 of its last 80 home games.

Hamilton Field was re-named from Broncho Field House on May 1, 1993 in honor of long-time UCO coach and athletic director Dale Hamilton, who helped design the building in the 1960s.

The facility underwent extensive renovation before the 2001-02 season, with new chairback seats installed around floor level.

Hamilton Field House is also the home facility for the volleyball and wrestling teams and numerous other events, including the university’s graduation ceremonies, are also held in the building.

Central Oklahoma is in its first year as a member of the Mid-Amer-ica Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

The MIAA, a 15-member conference of NCAA Division II insti-tutions in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma, was first or-ganized in 1912 as the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

Over the past 100 years, the MIAA has gained the reputation of be-ing one of the top NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. MIAA schools have won 15 NCAA team championships and, since 1964, over 160 individual national titles.

The MIAA currently conducts champi-onships in eight sports for men and nine for women.

For the men, champions are crowned in football, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, baseball, tennis and golf.

The women compete for titles in vol-leyball, cross country, soccer, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, softball, golf and tennis.

The MIAA turned a new page on July 1, 1992, when the NCAA Division II confer-ence changed its name from the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

The decision to make the change originated in 1989, when Pittsburg State and Washburn became the first schools outside the state of Mis-souri to gain membership in the MIAA.

The conference was first organized in 1912 with 14 member institu-tions. Of those original members, Central Missouri, Truman State and Northwest Missouri State still remain a part of the MIAA.

The first change in membership came in 1924, when the MIAA reorganized to include only the five regional Missouri state colleges: Central Missouri, Truman (at the time known as Northeast Missouri

the mid-ameriCa interCOllegiate athletiCs assOCiatiOn State), Northwest Missouri, Southeast Missouri State and Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State).

Over the next 56 years, three schools joined the membership: Mis-souri School of Mines (later Missouri-Rolla) in 1935, Lincoln in 1970 and the Missouri-St. Louis in 1980.

Ken Jones became the first full-time commissioner of the MIAA in 1981 and would be in the position for 16 years, retiring in 1997. Ralph McFillen succeeded Jones, serving 10 years before his retire-

ment in 2007.Jim Johnson succeeded McFillen in

July of that year and served as commis-sioner until September of 2010, when Dr. Bob Boerigter took over.

Southwest Baptist brought member-ship back to eight schools in 1986, be-fore the major expansion of the confer-ence in 1989. Pittsburg State, Washburn, Missouri Southern and Missouri West-ern began competition in the 1989-90 season.

Southeast Missouri State left the MIAA following the 1990-91 season and was replaced by Emporia State in the 1991-92 season.

Missouri-St. Louis departed the MIAA in 1996, Missouri-Rolla left in

2005 and Lincoln forfeited its membership in 1999. Fort Hays State joined the MIAA in 2006, NebraskaOmaha entered the league in 2008 and Lincoln re-joined the conference in 2010.

On July 29, 2010, the MIAA CEO Council voted to extend invi-tations to UCO and Northeastern State to become members of the league and on Sept. 24, 2010 it voted to extend invitations to Nebras-ka-Kearney and Lindenwood.

Nebraska-Omaha left the league in 2011 and Truman State will do the same next year, which will leave 14 schools in the MIAA.
