The Fighting Scots call the Bennett Athletic and Recreation Center home. Built in 1996, the 72,000-square-foot facility is home to the men’s and women’s basketball teams, the men’s and women’s swim teams, the Athletic Department offices, locker rooms, classrooms, the athletic training facilities, as well as the La Vida Center for Outdoor Education rock wall.

The facility is also home to the Recreation Department’s fitness and wellness center, equipped with free and Nautilus weights, along with cardio equipment, physio balls, and three televisions. The 1,500-seat gymnasium is one of the loudest basketball facilities in The Commonwealth Coast Conference. The men’s basketball program broadcasts each home game via the Internet, offering both audio and video.

The Fighting Scots men’s basketball program has enjoyed much success in the Bennett Center, boasting an .833 winning percentage in the past eight seasons in the building and a .862 winning percentage against conference opponents.

Murphy and his wife, Kelly, have three daughters: Annie, Lacey and Kylie. His brother, Tim, is an assistant coach at Cal Poly.

education: B.A., University of California-Irvine, Economics (1986)

Years of Coaching experience: 11

Tod Murphy was hired as the 33rd head coach of the Gordon College Men’s Basketball team in June 2009. Murphy joins the Scots after previous stints as an NCAA Division I assistant coach at both the University of California-Irvine (six seasons) and the University of California-Riverside (two seasons). At UC-Irvine Murphy was the top assistant. His responsibilities included director of recruiting, offensive coordinator and principal scout.

Prior to becoming a coach, Murphy experienced a storied career as a player. He still ranks second all-time at UC-Irvine in both career scoring (1,778 points) and rebounding (837 boards). As a senior he earned Honorable Mention All-American honors from the Associated Press. He was inducted into UC-Irvine’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000. After graduating with a degree in economics, Murphy led the Albany Patroons to the Continental Basketball Association title and was selected Most Valuable Player of the playoffs. He then played forward on the first Minnesota Timberwolves club in 1989, winning the team’s Defensive Player of the Year Award and leading the NBA in fewest turnovers per minute. Over Murphy’s four years in the NBA he completed stints with the Los Angeles Clippers, Houston Rockets and Detroit Pistons. Following his NBA days Murphy played for several top international clubs, including teams in Italy, Greece, Spain and Japan.

Krass is a 2008 Gordon College graduate and a four-year player for the Fighting Scots. Krass was a cocaptain for the Fighting Scots as a senior and helped lead the squad to an 18-9 record and berth in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Tournament Semifinals. Krass was on the only Fighting Scots men’s hoops team to earn a berth in the NCAA Tournament in the 2005–06 season. He also coached the 2008–2009 Gordon team on their two-week international trip to Argentina in May 2009.

In addition to his role on the basketball team, Krass also works in the Center for Christian Studies at Gordon as the assistant program director.

2009–2010 SeASon PrevieW

The 2009–2010 edition

of the Fighting Scots

will display many

familiar faces as the

team returns all but

one player from their

20-7 campaign last

year. However, Gordon

will be adding several

highly touted incoming

freshmen, two

transfers, and perhaps

the biggest change

from the previous regime, new head coach Tod Murphy.

Coach Murphy joins the club after spending the previous eight

seasons as an NCAA Division I assistant coach; first at the

University of California-Riverside for two years, then as the head

assistant at the University of California-Irvine. Prior to entering

the coaching ranks, Murphy enjoyed a very successful playing

career in which he was an Honorable Mention All-American at

UC-Irvine and a member of the Timberwolves, Rockets, Pistons

and Clippers of the NBA. Following his days in the NBA, Murphy

played professionally in Italy, Greece, Spain and Japan.

Murphy inherits a team poised for a historical season, in large

part due to the leadership of the six seniors on the roster. Aaron

Trigg (overland Park, KS) and brady bajema (Whitinsville,

MA) comprise a backcourt that was widely believed to be the

strongest in The Commonwealth Coast Conference last season.

Trigg enters his senior season after having one of the most

decorated individual seasons in Scots history. As a junior Trigg

led the team with an 18.2 ppg average; was named All-TCCC

First Team, TCCC All-Academic Team, D3Hoops.com Northeast

All-Region Third Team; and reached the 1,000 career points

plateau. Bajema completes the backcourt looking to build on a

very successful junior year in which he led the team in assists

(4.64 pg) and free-throw percentage (89%) while also setting a

new single season record for three-point field goal percentage

(.495%), a mark which also led the TCCC. Bajema was named All-

TCCC Second Team.

The frontcourt will feature seniors ben gaskill (Columbus, oH)

and Jeff derr (barrington, iL). Gaskill has continued to improve

every season while at Gordon and last year proved invaluable

as he led the TCCC in field goal percentage (.610) and the team

in rebounds (7.7 pg). His biggest asset, however, was his unique

combination of size (6'9") and athleticism, which allowed Gaskill

to defend all five positions on the floor. After starting the season

slowed by an injury, Derr looks to build on his late season success.

At 6'8" Derr possesses a wide array of post moves but also the

ability to stretch the defense as evident by his career 40% three-

point field goal percentage.

Completing the senior class are guards Tim Macdonnell (Jericho,

vT) and ben drake (blooming glen, PA). MacDonnell appeared in

all 27 games in ’08–’09, starting in 10. MacDonnell led the team in

charges drawn and gives the Scots another viable option at the

guard position. Drake saw limited action in the ’08–’09 season,

appearing in nine games and averaging 1.8 points per contest.

The Scots will rely heavily on juniors greg Walker (uxbridge, MA)

and Austin bentson (branchville, nJ), who both look to build on

very successful sophomore seasons. Walker started all but one

game for the Scots and was third on the team in points (13.3) and

second in rebounds (5.4). Walker was also named to the TCCC

All-Academic Team. Bentson appeared in all 27 contests last year,

starting 20 times. Bentson averaged 4.7 points and 3.4 rebounds

per game last season and was arguably the Scots best player

during the team’s two-week missions trip to Argentina last May.

The biggest obstacle for the ’08–’09 Fighting Scots was a lack

of depth as only seven players averaged more than 10 minutes

per game. This issue will be answered by a more seasoned

group of sophomores, two transfers and a very strong incoming

freshman class. Leading the way are sophomores Jon Himottu

(Sterling, MA) and Jordan Kelly (braintree, MA). At 6'9" and 6'8"

respectively, Himottu and Kelly look to bolster an already strong

front line. Himottu appeared in 20 games as a freshman, and after

a strong off-season appears poised to contribute significantly

more as a sophomore. In nine games Kelly averaged 1.3 points

and one rebound per game but was slowed for most of the

season by illness. The guard position is equally well represented

by garrett Harden (Webster, MA) and JT Himmelstein (glendale,

AZ). Harden, a sharp shooter from the perimeter, appeared in

16 games last year. After an injury-plagued freshman season, a

healthy Himmelstein will compete for minutes at the onset of the

season. Brothers Adam and Stephen Herod (Manchester, nH)

add further depth to the roster.

The 2009–2010 edition of the Fighting Scots will be rounded

out by one of the strongest crops of incoming freshmen and

transfers in recent memory. This group includes david dempsey

(Wallingford, CT), david Hammer (Santa Monica, CA), Scott

nelson (oakhurst, nJ), Jordan Logan (Marietta, gA) and Luke

Perkins (Wilmington, de).

The Scots open up the 2009–2010 season on November 18

against Husson College.

With career percentages of 48% from the three-point line, 83% from the free-throw line and 51% overall from the field, Brady Bajema is already considered one of the best shooters to ever wear a Gordon jersey. In addition to setting a new school record for three-point percentage in a single season (.495), Bajema has also emerged as the team’s primary ball handler and best perimeter defender and looks to build on a junior year in which he set career highs in points, assists, rebounds and minutes played. Bajema has 42 career starts, is only 250 points short of 1,000 career points, and over his career he as compiled an assist to turnover ratio of 1.77.

As a junior (2008–2009): Voted a cocaptain by his teammates, Bajema enjoyed a very successful junior season which saw him set career highs in point per game (14.2), assists (209), rebounds (63) and free-throw percentage (89%). He was tenth in the conference in scoring, third in assist to turnover ratio, fifth in minutes played, fourth in field goal percentage, third in assists, and led the league in three-point field goal percentage. He also hit a career high 15 free throws against Bates on February 12, which helped Gordon defeat the Bobcats for the first time in school history. Bajema scored in double-digits 15 times and was named TCCC Second Team and to the Gordon Invitational All-Tournament Team.

As a sophomore (2007–2008): Played in 26 games for the Scots, starting 17 times. Bajema averaged 9.5 points per game and 2.3 assists. Bajema was second in the conference in three-point field goal percentage at .439 and had 70 assists. In a win against #19 ranked Plattsburgh State on January 4, Bajema didn’t miss a shot shooting 7-7 from the field 2-2 from the perimeter and 2-2 from the free- throw line for 18 points. The next night against Union College, Bajema’s 10 points helped the team win the Sig Makofski Tournament, and after the game he was named to the All-Tournament Team. In a win against Curry College on January 26, Bajema hit a three pointer on four

Senior guard Aaron Trigg has been an impact player at Gordon College since he stepped foot on campus his freshman year. He enters his senior campaign after one of the most successful junior years in Gordon College history, highlighted by being named to the D3hoops.com All-Region Team. Over the course of his basketball career Tim MacDonnell has won two high school state championships, and during his tenure at Gordon, the Scots won the 2006–2007 TCCC regular season championship. This is due in large part to MacDonnell’s willingness to do whatever it takes for his team. You will often find him diving on the floor for a loose ball, taking a charge or making an extra pass that leads to a teammate’s wide-open layup. MacDonnell has career averages of 1.6 points per game and 1.6 rebounds per game.

As a junior (2008–2009): Played in all 27 games for the Scots, starting 10 times. In 2008–09 MacDonnell averaged 1.6 points and 2.1 rebounds per game, totaled 18 steals and 46 assists on the

As a freshman (2006–2007): In 11 games for the Scots, MacDonnell had two assists, four steals, 10 points, and

12 rebounds. Grabbed three rebounds apiece in wins against Eastern Nazarene College on January 20 and on February 15 against Anna Maria.

Austin Bentson adds both versatility and experience to the 2009–2010 Fighting Scots. As a sophomore Benston appeared in all 27 contests for the Scots, averaging 21.6 minutes per game. Although he played primarily as a small forward in ’09–’10, Bentson can play both shooting guard and small forward and is poised for a big year after a very strong summer in which he was arguably the Scots best player during their two-week trip to Argentina. For his career Bentson is averaging 3.9 points per game and 2.8 rebounds per game.

As a sophomore (2008–2009): Appeared in all 27 games for the Scots with 20 starts. In his first career start against Eastern Nazarene College on November 15, Bentson poured

in a career best 16 points, going 3-5 from the perimeter. In a conference matchup against Wentworth on January 10 Bentson played 40 minutes and contributed nine points and five rebounds. In a win against Bates on February 12, Bentson tallied 11 points. For the season Bentson averaged 3.9 points per game and 2.8 rebounds.

As a freshman (2007–2008): Saw limited action, appearing in nine games. On January 26 against Curry, Bentson scored four points and collected two rebounds and matched that point total on January 15 against Anna Maria. For the season Bentson averaged 1.6 points per game and 1.1 rebounds.

before gordon: Attended High Point High School in Sussex, New Jersey. Bentson was named captain and team MVP as a senior and was named to the Sussex County Interscholastic League First-Team.

Personal: Austin is majoring in recreation and leisure studies and is the son of Bob and Wendy Bentson.

At 6'9" Himottu adds further depth to an already very strong front line. Himottu possesses a soft touch around the basket and the ability to step outside the paint and knock down medium-range jump shots. As a freshman (2008–2009): Averaged 4.4 minutes per game for the Scots, appearing in 22 games throughout the season. Himottu collected a career high seven rebounds in just five minutes in his first collegiate game against Eastern Nazarene on November 15. Against Crown College on January 5, Himottu set another career high with six points going 3-5 from the field. For the season he totaled 22 points (1.0 per game) and 19 boards (.9 per game).

MiSSionS TriP To ArgenTinA Aaron Trigg ’10

“I probably should have given this to you at the beginning of

the trip,” Julio said. “But here is your schedule for the past two

weeks.” That was our Argentinean guide, Julio, as we were

boarding the vans to the airport for our return to the solid

ground of the U.S.A. That’s right; he said “past” two weeks.

This was not the beginning of our trip, not the middle, but

30 minutes before we arrived at the airport to finish our trip.

It’s not that we would have liked to think there was a plan or

something! Holy smokes! The most direction we had the entire

trip was “Breakfast is at 8:00 and we leave at 8:45 for a clinic.”

(Breakfast, by the way, was croissants, coffee, and naranja sin

gas for two straight weeks. Try to get excited about that on day

11.) And the whole time he was holding out on us. I guess you

could say that was a microcosm of our trip.

My name is Aaron Trigg. I am a guard and one of six seniors

and 14 returners from last year’s 20-7 team. Every four years

the team has taken an international trip. Our trips take on

a different personality than most due to our religious faith.

While one of our goals is to play basketball and compete with

international competition, our main goal is to spread the gospel

of Jesus Christ. Four years ago the team went to Taiwan and

had an incredible experience. We anticipated that our trip

would be much the same.

The leaders of the trip were assistant coach Keith Krass,

Gordon's former vice president of enrollment, Silvio Vazquez,

and former Gordon basketball stud Ryan Smith. The days

leading up to the trip were stressful for these folks (for stress-

related illnesses see Krass, Keith), but everyone made it on the

plane passports intact, and we were off to Argentina.

Once we landed from the 26-hour traveling

bonanza, we were introduced to what

many Spanish books call “La hora Latina,”

which roughly translates to: “We are late

everywhere, but that’s ok because everyone

is always late, so technically no one is ever

actually late.” After the 30-minute wait

for our guide, Julio, and our two drivers,

Mattias and Juan Carlos (fondly referred to

as Juanca), we were off to our hotel. Our

living arrangement was quite nice once we

got past the approximately 6'x1' mattresses.

We had cable TV, Internet access and, most

importantly, a bidet. I will spare the details

of the fun thirteen 18–22 year old males can

have with one of them; just know they’re

awesome. After a little time to get situated,

we headed out to meet with our first

church and play our first game.

Little did we know that the first church was about an hour and

a half from our hotel. Did I mention we didn’t have a schedule?

As worried comments kept making their way from the back

seat of our vans, I wondered if Julio knew what exactly he was

doing. Julio was the type of person who made us wonder at

times if he had any idea what we were trying to say. English

wasn’t his first language. Other times it seemed as though he

knew way more than he was letting on.

Another little tidbit we were unaware of was that the churches

in Argentina would prepare merienda, a traditional meal eaten

around six or seven in the evening that consists of pastries,

sweets and coffee. Basically anything to throw your blood

sugar through the roof and keep you from wanting to play a

basketball game an hour later. Nonetheless, we left the church

for our 8:00 game at 8:45 and proceeded to play a giant stink-

bomb of a game in front of our Argentinean faithful. We lost by

5. I would like to blame it on the 26 straight hours of travel plus

the wonderful insulin booster that is merienda. Whatever it was,

we lost. It was pretty disappointing to lose to a team we felt we

should have beaten, but what was most disappointing was the

thought that we might lessen the effectiveness of our message

if we were not successful on the court. As we did each game,

a teammate gave his testimony at halftime and encouraged

anyone in the stands to connect with the local church if

anything we said struck a cord with them. We handed out small

pamphlets explaining the gospel in hopes we might reach a few

people. That night four people returned their pamphlets to me

with their names and addresses, saying they wanted to know

more about Jesus Christ. That quickly changed my perspective

on our success. As became tradition throughout our time in

MiSSionS TriP To ArgenTinA

Argentina, we ate dinner with the opposing team. Argentineans

are surprisingly fond of pizza; either that or they think we are.

I’m still undecided. Conversations usually revolved around Manu

Ginobili (my favorite player), Luis Scola and Boca Juniors vs.

River Plate soccer.

One of the more memorable experiences of the trip occurred

the next day. We visited a prison for juveniles no older than

22 years, several of whom were from overseas. As we were

providing a clinic I attempted to explain in my broken Spanish

where one guy should stand. He looked at me and said, “Dude,

I’m from London.” Oh. He told me he was in his second week

of a 22-month sentence for drug trafficking. He has a wife

and daughter back in England. I couldn’t imagine being in

his position, thousands of miles from home with no one who

even speaks your language. Coach Krass gave his testimony

explaining that no matter what you have done in the past, it

is never too late to return to God and ask for his forgiveness,

and He will always accept you. It was a powerful message for a

group desperately in need of hope. They were the most captive

audience we had for the two weeks—no pun intended—and

they were clearly searching for something. It is my hope that

we were able to help them find it.

The rest of our first week began to evolve into a pattern.

Carbohydrate bonanza for breakfast, clinics in the morning,

lunch with a church, clinics in the afternoon, sugar high for

merienda, game, dinner at 10:00 with the team, and hit the hay

after midnight. While the format was the same, every day was

a new experience. Several clinics we performed were at schools

with 400 students and zero basketball hoops. We used two of

our players standing on chairs with their arms in front of them

as baskets. And you know what? The kids loved it. They didn’t

care if there were great baskets, or leather balls, or tackle twill

uniforms. They just knew that some people from the U.S. came

just to see them, and they were ecstatic. It was an incredible

platform from which to speak. We were commanding audiences

of thousands of children each day to hear about basketball and

Jesus Christ. It was an incredible opportunity.

The one break in this pattern came when we attended an

Argentinean futbol match between Boca Juniors and a team

from Paraguay. I have never experienced any type of sporting

event like this. We sat in a section in the “end zone” of the

stadium behind the goal. To say we were in standing room

only would be like saying Brett Farve has some trouble making

commitments; a complete understatement. One guy literally

stood on the railing while holding on to the fans below him.

These fans stand for the entire game, but they don’t just stop

there. They sing and play music and jump and dance, all while

doing a wimpy-looking arm motion from the second they are

in view of the stadium. During introductions, what has to be

the world’s largest Boca Juniors flag was hung from the top of

the stadium to the field over the section opposite us. Before

the start of the game a group called “Jugador 12” or “The 12th

Player” entered the stadium, beating on drums, singing and

swinging sparklers and, in some cases, fire. Needless to say,

this lasted the whole game. The pregame introductions were

a spectacle in themselves. It was a 4th of July style fireworks

display while everyone in the stadium sang Boca songs and

drowned out the announcing of the players. After what we

witnessed at the beginning of the game, the game itself was

sort of a letdown. Boca lost and we left unscathed, a minor

victory in itself. It was an experience I will never forget and

gave me a different definition of diehard fans. As a gift, we

were given a CD of Boca Juniors songs. I’m working on a similar

set of songs for our fans this year.

On another note, I have to mention my buddy Moose. He may

or may not have been responsible for the recent increase in

Argentinean breakups and divorces. Ladies in Argentina loved

him! He’s not even that good looking! What he does have is

great blonde flow, and chicks dig that. I vividly remember him

running from a school to the vans to get to another clinic with a

crowd of girls chasing him. You would have thought he was one

of the Jonas Brothers. I heard him compared to anyone from

Brad Pitt to Matt Damon to Nick Carter to Orlando Bloom to

The Jo Bros. Seriously? Come on girls. I’m still speechless.

Anyway, back to the important stuff. We began winning

basketball games after that first night, and we were 4-1 as we

headed off to La Rioja in western Argentina. Joining us on

our 14-hour bus ride was Sports Ambassadors Director Robin

Cook. Robin is a great guy, and we were glad to have this highly

experienced man as a member of our group. After arriving

in La Rioja, we were taken on a parade throughout the city

announcing our arrival to anyone who would listen. We knew

we were in for something we had never experienced before.

The pastor of the local church we worked with while in La

Rioja, Gabriel, had began a sports ministry in La Rioja to keep

troubled youth off the streets and to teach them discipline

through athletics. These were the most disciplined and giving

people I have ever met. For every meal they served us, they

MiSSionS TriP To ArgenTinA

Page 47: Men's Basketball Media Guide 2009-2010

45

waited for us to eat before they sat to eat. They catered to

our every need without ever once complaining. Meals for 30

or more people were prepared in a kitchen the size of a large

porta-potty. And we thought we were the ones coming to

serve. A clinic had been organized by Gabriel that afternoon at

a local community center. The van they rented for us was not

big enough to seat everyone, so the players went on the van,

while the coaches and Julio crammed into Gabriel’s 1972 Ford

Falcon. Another way to look at it was all Spanish speakers in

the car, all non-Spanish speakers in the van. This would not end

well. Somewhere communication was crossed (Who woulda

thunk?) and we ended up at the community center two hours

before we were supposed to, and our coaches ended up at

the hotel. Did I mention we didn’t have an itinerary? So, 13

English-speaking college students were trying to tell the one

Spanish-speaking bus driver that we needed to go back to the

hotel. Great. Turns out we had one player who spoke Spanish

well enough to explain where we needed to go and reunite with

our leaders. Not a great start. Despite that, the clinic went off

without a hitch as reporters and the local newspaper arrived to

interview us. Other than Coach Krass becoming “Coach Grass”

in the La Rioja Times, we were well-represented in the media.

Throughout the week we played in a wide variety of venues.

Cement outdoor courts with chain nets were not out of the

question while we also played in rather large club gyms that

would rival some American college facilities. The most exciting

game we played was against Club Facundo, the shining star of

La Rioja basketball. They had previously won their division of

the Argentinean Professional Basketball League and probably

did not expect to be pushed by some young Americans.

When I researched their roster I discovered they had a 6'10"

American center. Forty-year-old Calvester Ferguson was still

living the dream playing basketball in Argentina. Unfortunately

for everyone involved, Calvester was not at the game. Shucks.

That will battle the in-flight entertainment as the biggest

disappointment of the trip. Facundo took it to us for the

majority of the game, but not without some help from Mr.

Referee (yes, that is singular; there was only one). I left early

in the first half with my second foul and later returned, having

picked up my third while on the bench. I was not the only

player to have that happen to them. In my best estimate, Mr.

Referee was just guessing, and I would not advise him to buy

a lottery ticket anytime soon. After falling behind by 17 late

in the second half, we began our comeback. With under two

minutes to go, we completed our improbable run with a three

to put us ahead by one. We weathered the furious last two

minutes, marred by several missed free throws to escape with a

win. Against the toughest competition we faced, we were able

to make, in the words of Robin, “an extraordinary comeback

after being down 17 points with seven minutes and 18 seconds

remaining. What a game! One of the greatest comebacks in

basketball history!”

Not only did the game end in a win, but we also experienced a

valuable learning experience along the way. As the game and

calls were not going our way, our attitudes and body language

suffered as well. Everyone involved was a culprit; we were not

being the witnesses for Christ that we had intended to be.

As the game began to change, so did our psyche. I think we

all learned that we cannot let external forces that we cannot

control, such as referees, affect our attitudes or our overall

mission, which is to live for Christ. It was an added bonus to

have escaped with a victory, but the real win came from the

mental discipline we gained.

After playing on what could have doubled as an ice rink, we

proceeded through the rest of our schedule unblemished as

we finished our trip 8-1*. (Under different circumstances that

one loss would have been different, hence the asterisk, I swear.)

But that was not the most valuable part of our trip. What we

saw from the people of Argentina was unforgettable. These

were people who did not have as much as we have in the

United States. Their clothes, their houses, their cars, were not

as valuable as what we call ours back home. And yet they gave

everything they had to welcome and thank us. Some people

literally gave us the shirts off their backs just because they

wanted to give us something. This was the type of experience

that forces us to reevaluate our priorities and how we treat

others. Do we really give sacrificially to others just so they feel

welcome and loved? Probably not. I will never forget the love

and generosity we saw from the people of Argentina. The many

thanks we receive did not seem justified. We thought we were

going to serve the people of Argentina. It turns out we were

the ones who were being served.

I still have that itinerary from the last day. As it turns out, we

were right on schedule for two weeks. We were off schedule

more because of Silvio than Julio. We did all our complaining

because we thought we knew better than the guy who had

been doing this for as long as we’d been alive. I can’t tell you

how many times I thought, “Do we have any idea where we are

going?” or “I bet I could have organized this better.” Or “I swear

that is the same tree we passed 20 minutes ago.” I was wrong.

Julio couldn’t have been better. We accomplished everything

we could have dreamed and more. It’s funny how we can sit

back and be convinced we know better than whoever is in

charge, especially if we don’t know the plan. Our relationship

with God is the same way. We swear we know better than He

does. If He would just let us have our way, we know everything

would work out. And God is just sitting in heaven, like Julio

in the front seat, thinking, “Just wait till I give them their

itineraries.” And the whole time we will have been right on

schedule.
