Owen Handy will be in his third season as the head coach of the men’s basketball team in 2014-15. During his first two seasons, the Ravens have undertaken some significant changes to the culture of the program. Coach Handy describes his ideal player: “We want players who are mentally tough, committed, and very competitive. They must be academically motivated and excited about our unique

Christian atmosphere. This is not the right place for everybody, but for the right player this is a very special place.”

In two years, Coach Handy’s freewheeling motion offense has already produced the school’s single-season scoring average record-holder (Phil Hogan, 25.5), single-game scoring record (Phil Hogan, 55), and two of the top-eight leaders in career three-pointers made (Phil Hogan, Max Mollaun). An emphasis on academic success has also produced a member of

the NABC Academic Honors Court (Nate Gross).Handy came to Anderson from Wheaton College, where he

served as an assistant coach for the Thunder for nine seasons under Mike Schauer and Bill Harris. During his tenure at Wheaton, the Thunder had a 72 percent winning percentage (177-69), five NCAA tournament appearances, and three Sweet 16 appearances. He was a part of recruiting or coaching five All-Americans, five Academic All-Americans, six Josten’s Trophy finalists, and one national player of the year.

Owen has worked numerous basketball camps and clinics around the world, including L’Arcada, a basketball camp in Catalunia, Spain. Among the highlights of his career has been the opportunity to be involved with G.O. Ministries in the Dominican Republic, working alongside former player and current missionary Kyle Bradley. As a freshman in college, Handy coached Bradley’s 8th grade basketball team.

The Holland, Mich., native played varsity basketball as a prep at Holland High School for Coach Mark Werley, graduating from the school in 1999. He double-majored at Wheaton in political science and history and holds a master’s degree in teaching from Aurora University. He is an active member of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis.
