Summary of Events

Membership Meetings Monthly membership meetings are a fun way to hone teaching skills, stay current on the latest teaching resources, refresh your enthusiasm and socialize with other teachers in our area. A vote by the general membership is required in order to change the By Laws of this branch organization. Members must attend 2 branch meetings during the year to qualify for event participation. Sign the attendance record!

Certificate of Merit, Path A The Certificate of Merit program (CM) is a graded student evaluation covering performance, technique, ear training, sight reading, and written theory. Students receive the evaluator’s comments and a certificate. There are awards and other performance opportunities for students who excel. More information and registration forms are available online or from the program chair.

Certificate of Merit, Path B Path B is a workshop intended for beginners, or for students who prefer less formal testing conditions. It consists of the same material in Path A, but the evaluation is administered in a casual setting. It may be administered by the teacher, or in another studio. Administrators may help students complete the test.

Festivals Each year, our branch presents a Romantic Festival, a Baroque Festival, a Classic Festival, and a Contemporary Festival. Student performers are assigned to a certain recital time according to their age and CM level. Performances are judged and awards are given.

Bach Festival The Bach Festival is sponsored by the Southern California Junior Bach Festival, Inc. and is open to students of active, provisional or student members of MTAC. A student may not enter both the Bach Festival and the Baroque Festival. More information and registration forms are available online or from the program chair.

Concerto Competition Students audition for the opportunity to perform a concerto with one of the Irvine Youth Symphony Orchestras. Winners will be chosen from each of 3 age divisions; Elementary (up to age 11), Junior (ages 12-14), and Senior (ages 15-18).

Music Students’ Service League Recitals MSSL presents student recitals in retirement homes. This is done as a service. Students arrive early to socialize with the residents. Afterwards, there is a reception. Community Service Credit is awarded to performers, ushers, and assistants.

Composers Today This is a state-wide program to encourage composition and improvisation. Students submit their own compositions to professional evaluators and receive constructive comments and ratings. Additional performance opportunities are awarded to outstanding student composers.

How your branch can donate to MTAC by registering with eScrip

Electronic Scrip Incorporated is a California based corporation dedicated to establishing a relationship between commerce and community by providing resources to organizations and projects that support children. ESI introduced the eScrip program in 1999 and has distributed over $120 million dollars to schools and youth organizations across the country.

By registering one or all of your store loyalty, credit and debit cards with www.escrip.com you can

contribute to MTAC whenever you use your card at participating stores. Participating merchants will make contributions to MTAC based on purchases you make when using the cards you have registered. Stores include Macy’s, Eddie Bauer, Office Max, Linens and Things, Big 5 Sporting Goods and many more. Check the website for an updated list of stores and restaurants in your community. You can also shop at eScrip’s Online Mall which includes over 700 merchants.

Your purchases are tracked and available to you online, allowing you to see just how much you

are earning for MTAC. To get started you need only to go to www.escrip.com, enter our Group ID #500001198 and then

follow the instructions. If you have already registered your card with another organization you can still add MTAC. Three designated organizations are allowed. If every teacher signs up think of the dollars rolling in to Certificate of Merit, Young Artists and Composers Guilds, Concerto/Solo Competition, etc.!

MTAC Privacy Policy and Children

The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), which is directed towards websites that

interact directly with children under the age of 13, reminds us to be careful of the information that we may have or store online in our website, relating to children. Although it is not entirely clear whether we fall under the provisions of COPPA, we feel the necessity to be protective of children and MTAC through the following measures:

1. We will post a privacy notice on our website which describes the website and refers parents to the student’s teacher or Branch Chair for further information. It will tell them that they can have this information removed by contacting their teacher and disengaging from Certificate of Merit.

2. We will provide a descriptive paragraph in the CM Information letter that goes to parents, informing them of the fact, that in the process of Certificate of Merit registration, some personal information about children is collected in a database. This letter will refer them to the privacy notice on the website for further information.

3. We are adding a layer of security to our website to further protect the information that is there. 4. We will be removing the options in the CM database for student’s address, email and phone

which are not needed. This provides another level of security in the protection of children.

Branches and Other Websites

Branches should be aware of the legal requirements of COPPA and maintain a level of awareness and concern about privacy issues and the gathering of information of children under the age of 13. Branches need to be aware that they may fall under the requirements of COPPA if their websites interact with children or if they collect personal information of children on their website. Branches that have online registration programs, or other features that relate to young students, should not collect any information about children under the age of 13, which is not absolutely necessary for the administration of their programs. See the State MTAC Online Privacy Policy (enclosed herein) for a suggested online policy to post if your website does such things. Our Attorney has suggested that a permission form, signed by the parent, may be a good idea to be completely compliant and a sample of this can be provided to those branches which are interested. For further information, contact Lee Galloway at [email protected].

ASCAP

American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers

Do you agree that music composers should receive royalties from the performances of their music? Yes, of course! Not only should they receive royalties, the Copyright Law states that they must receive a royalty when their work is performed. ASCAP protects the rights of its members by licensing and distributing royalties for the performances of copyrighted works. ASCAP members are individuals who make their living writing music. Many of our MTAC members are members of ASCAP. We know that many months, even years, can pass between the creation of a piece, its publishing, its recording, its release, its performance, and the day when the revenues due to the composer actually arrive. ASCAP exists to ensure that music creators are paid when their works are performed publicly. Rental or purchase of music does not authorize its public performance. A public performance is one that occurs either in a public place or any place where people gather. This includes all MTAC recitals, master classes, concerts, workshops, etc. With one license fee, ASCAP saves us the time, expense, and burden of contacting thousands of copyright owners, and gives us the right to perform any or all of the millions of musical works in the copyrighted repertory. Works created after January 1, 1978, are protected for the life of the composer plus 70 years. Copyrights in effect on that date, if renewed, will continue for 95 years from the date copyright was originally secured. MTAC has an ASCAP Copyright License. Our License Number is 500605062. This license is at no charge to individual members, as it is paid for by a portion of our dues. It covers each and every MTAC member for all branch public performance, plus individual recitals and concerts by MTAC members. However — for ASCAP members to be sent royalties from the performances of their works, we must turn in programs of all performances to ASCAP. This is where we need your help. Please have someone in your branch in charge of mailing all programs to State Board Member Susan Clark, 107 East Lake Drive, Antioch, CA 94509. You may mail programs in bunches, and any time during the year. Susan, then, will send them all to ASCAP. MTAC also has an ASCAP Media License. This allows us to post recordings on our www.mtac.org website. This does not allow individual branches to post music on their branch websites, however. You may check on what pieces are in the ASCAP repertory, and also who is an ASCAP member, by accessing the ACE part of the website www.ascap.com. Any questions - please contact Susan Clark at [email protected] or 925-754-2992.
