Melba Voice What a wonderful busy, interesting and productive term and semester it has been. With camps, excursions, incursions, ANZAC Services, Open Night, House Swimming & Athletics Days, Dance Showcase, FONO, Band Concert, Musical Production rehearsals, Work Experience and exams the College has been a hive of activity. Thank you to our staff that have offered all these experiences to our students as well as delivering the very highest level of curriculum. Building works will continue during the holiday period including the construction of a space for a vegetable/kitchen garden. Thank you again to our college community for their understanding during this phase. Mid-Year Exams I would like to congratulate all students for the manner and attitude they displayed in undertaking their mid-year exams. Exams were held for Year 9, 10 and 11 students and our Year 12 students sat the General Achievement Test (GAT) and some practice exams. Part of the reason we have students undertake exams is to prepare students for Years 11 & 12 so that they are comfortable and experienced in sitting under exam conditions. I was most impressed with how our students approached the exams and the level of maturity they displayed. Reports Student reports will be issued this week and I suggest families take the opportunity to discuss these, celebrate achievements and identify focuses for the second half of the year. Semester 1 reports will be available via the Compass portal from Friday 28 June. Parents and students will be able to access the reports via the following link http://melba.vic.jdlf.com.au/login.aspx End of term Term 2 finishes on Friday 28 June. Students will be dismissed at 2.30pm on that day. Families of Years 7, 8 and 9 students are invited to join us for our ACE Assembly, from 11.50am in the Junior Learning Street. School resumes for all students on Monday 15 July. Havard University I’m spending my holidays at Harvard University Boston where I have begun a 10 day conference on the Art of Leadership. I see leadership on a daily basis from the students and staff at our college which regularly prompts me to reflect on the importance of leadership. Sometimes effective leaders are those that influence through restraint, to have the courage to say no to a course of action despite considerable investment through resources or emotion. At Melba College, I want our students to recognise there are many and diverse ways to be a leader and for all of our students to see leadership as something to aspire to whether they exercise that leadership is in their communities, friendship groups, the classroom or future work environments. All of us can be leaders. All of us can be influencers. All of us as educators have a responsibility to nurture and grow the leaders of tomorrow. At the beginning of Term 2, student representatives set out to improve their outreach and efficiency within the school. After much hard work, 4 smaller subcommittees have been established within Student Voice, each with a specific goal or function. These groups are: Teaching and Learning Engagement and Wellbeing Environment and Sustainability Fundraising and Events. The first task for our new fundraising and events subcommittee was to plan and organise this term’s casual dress day. We are glad to announce that we have raised $470 in aid of the WWF, a brilliant result! Thank you to all the student representatives and teachers

who assisted in the planning for the day. Samuel Thomas

Recently in the environment and sustainability sub committee we have been working on the Envision program which involves collecting plastic bottle caps which when we get enough will be melted down and turned into a prosthetic limb for a child in a low-socio economic country. There are collection boxes around the school so we would appreciate it if you could drop your bottle caps in there. We are also working on implementing paper recycling bins in the classrooms, offices and other areas around the school. Our current total is 643 plastic caps, a fantastic effort from the Melba Community. Keep collecting! Elin Murray - Year 12

Year 10 Leadership Program

You may remember from the last newsletter article that some of our Year 10 students are participating in a Leadership program, and that they had worked with the Grade 5 and 6 students from Ainslie Parklands Primary School. After a fabulous session, they asked us back to do some more activities with them. This was an added bonus for both schools, as we had only originally planned for one. You can see from the photos that everyone was having a great time. It was wonderful to see the older girls interacting with the Primary School students in a warm, caring and fun manner. Congratulations girls!

Wellbeing

The mid-year break is one of the most important during a school year. For our Senior VCE and VCAL students, it is the break where they can really begin to work on their studies to improve their results and competencies. For the students in lower levels, it is a chance to finish the semester and begin a new semester, for some students, to begin a new subject. We have also just had the winter solstice, so it is time that our days begin to get a bit longer again after the shortest day of the year. It is still really important to try and get some exercise. Rug up, go for a walk around the block, take the dog, go to the park, whatever it is, but try to get outside and breath in some fresh air. I hope everyone has a relaxing break, and has some time to refresh and recharge the batteries.

Year 7 Health Week

The last week of term is an immersion program for Year 7 students. They participate in a range of activities related to Health of their body, mind and soul. Sessions include; boxercise, healthy relationships, puberty, nutrition, stress management, first aid, team building, Ultimate Frisbee, self-defence and hip hop dancing. At the time of writing this article, we have not yet completed the feedback session from the students. I will be sure to have some student’s responses, and more photos, in the next newsletter.

Exams

Year 10 Semester One exams are now complete. I’d like to thank the students for the generally impressive manner in which they conducted themselves during the exam period. Thanks must also be extended to staff for supervising the exams and, in particular, Mr Richard Allan and Mr Matthew Lee for overseeing the organisation of the exam period as a whole. Exam feedback has now been provided and Semester One Reports will follow in the short-term. Work Experience

Next week (Monday 24 June to Friday 28 June) will see Year 10 students complete their Work Experience placements. During the week, all students will be visited by various members of staff. This is an important part of the school year and will provide students will an enhanced insight into the world of work. Students are reminded that they need to complete their Work Experience journals and have employers fill out their evaluations. Holidays

As this is the final edition of Melba Voice for Term 2, I’d like to take this opportunity to wish all Year 10 students an enjoyable, relaxing and safe holiday. Term 3 will commence on Monday 15 July Forthcoming Dates - Term 3

Thursday 25 July- Workplace visit to Accenture Tuesday 13 August- Beacon Breakfast and Speed Careers event Wednesday 11 September- Beacon Mock Interviews event Further information about these events will follow in due course. Year 10 Health

The students had a chance to be creative for their final assessment task in Year 10 Health for the semester. We have been studying the topic of 'safer choices' this term and the students were asked to create a board game based on any of the topics they have studied. The students went above and beyond expectations and put a lot of work into these games. I am so proud of all of these board games and the student’s performance. Well done Year 10s, keep up the good work. Miss Luiyf Year 10 Health Teacher

Some of our brilliant Year 9 students from 902 have been out and about working at different locations in our local community throughout the first half of this year. A massive thank you to Mr Mammoliti for organizing our Year 9 Community program that’s given our students an opportunity to develop some amazing skills and fabulous connections in our community. Next semester more of our Year 9’s will continue the work 901 and 902 have started. With Tasmania Camp coming up at the end of Term 3 and City Experience in Term 4, our Year 9’s have a big semester coming up. Rest up over the semester break and we will see you all back at the College for a new term on July 15.

After training and practising hard all term, the Year 7s got to put their skills in action at the Year 7 Sport round robin on Monday 17 June. The Year 7 girls netball had an A and B team enter, and many of these girls hadn’t played netball before and the girls improved so much from that first training to taking the court on the day. The Girls A team had a very successful day, winning their first game against Mooroolbark, and then winning their second game against Norwood by 1 goal. They then had to play Ringwood who had a very good team and unfortunately lost that game. As they had won 2/3 games, they made it to the grand final where they fought with all their might against Ringwood again, where again they unfortunately lost. I am so proud of the girls for coming 2nd overall, they each improved as every game got on and not once did they drop their heads. They showed true Melba spirit with their team work, encouragement and didn’t give up until the siren went. Well done girls on an awesome achievement, I can’t wait to see how we go next year once we have had even more practise! Year 7 A team The Girls B team who were coached by Meg McDowell and Abbey Watson (thanks girls), had some very close games against Norwood, Mooroolbark and Ringwood. Unfortunately they didn’t walk away with any wins, but again their skills and teamwork improved so much from their first game until their last game for the day. The girls showed great persistence, and had a lot of fun. Well done girls also, on a successful day! Miss Luiyf

June was a very busy month for Interschool sport competitions with our students training and competing throughout the month. Year 11/12 Winter (2) Round Robin:

At this level, we were represented by two boys Basketball teams, a Boys Hockey team and both a Boys and Girls Table Tennis team. The basketballers found the opposition quite formidable, although pleasingly our ‘B’ team did manage to win 2 of their 3 games on the day. The hockey team were very competitive however they were twice on the wrong end of a 1-0 result. Our most successful team on the day was our Girls Table Tennis team who played very well to win their competition. The following is a report from Mr.Warburton who took the table tennis teams on the day: On Monday 3 June our senior students competed at Kilysth Basketball Stadium in the District Table tennis round robin. Our boys played each other first, with Melba A coming out on top. Melba A then played Norwood. The boys played extremely well to win convincingly, 6 rubbers to nil. We then played Ringwood who were just too strong on the day. Our girls played Ringwood in the best of 6 rubbers. Each rubber was the best of 7 games. It was a very close contest being 3 rubbers each. Four of the rubbers were 4 games to 3. We ended up winning by 21 games to 16. Team members: (Girls)- Karina Grubacki, Alex Banci, Ruth Tlu Mang, Isobel Buchan,

Olivia Thomson, Promreasmey Pech. (Boys)Tluang Kheng Lawt, Ezekiel Kheng Lawt, Tom Khuk Zawn, Anawl Kheng Lawt, Sina Setoodehtazangi, Navid Moalee, Khai Za Thang and Ryan Mackie. Senior Boys Hockey Year 8 Winter (1) Round Robin

Our teams had been training throughout the term in their Sport Education classes to prepare them for the competition on Tuesday 11 June. We entered two girls Netball teams, a boys and girls Badminton team as well as a Boys and Girls Soccer team. Overall our teams were very competitive, however unfortunately none of the teams won their competition to qualify for the Eastern Region finals next term. The boys Soccer team went the closest, losing a penalty shootout in the final against Ringwood. They played extremely well to easily defeat Norwood 9-0 which meant they had to beat Ringwood, who had also defeated Norwood in their round robin competition. The boys conceded an early goal against the run of play however John Thang scored a fantastic goal from just inside the halfway line to equalise! The boys unfortunately conceded again however Henry Henry took his opportunity late in the game on his left foot to again tie the game up. Two periods of extra time was not enough to break the deadlock so a penalty shoot out was required to decide the winner. Unfortunately, we missed two of our shots whilst Ringwood held their nerve and this was enough to take out the competition. Year 8 Boys Soccer Team

Year 7 Winter (1) Round Robin

The Year 7s struck it lucky with magnificent sunny weather on their round robin day. We were represented by a boys Football team, a girls and boys Soccer team, two girls Netball teams and a boys and girls Badminton team. It is fair to say that the boys football and soccer teams struggled against the bigger schools in our division however it did provide the students with an opportunity to learn and test their skills against strong and skilful opponents. The Boys Badminton team finished the day second in their competition which was a great effort. Our best performed team on the day was the ’A’ netball team who were very competitive and indeed played off in the Grand Final. Miss Luiyf;s report is at the beginning of this section.

Eastern Region Cross Country- Tuesday June 18

Ten students qualified to run in this event by finishing in the top 15 of their age division at the Maroondah District competition which was held three weeks ago. A couple of students were unable to take part due to injury, whilst it is fair to say that our students found the level of competition to be a big step up from their qualifying run. Results on the day were as follows: 15 y.o Boys 14 y.o Boys

Maroondah Division Athletics- Friday September 6 Mid-Year FONO concert

The Melba College Mid-Year FONO concert was held on a very chilly evening on Wednesday June 19. In spite of the cold, the enthusiastic performers, an appreciative audience and a cosy theatre atmosphere made for a very entertaining evening. The concert included students from all year levels and showcased a wide variety of musical talent. Some of the highlights of the night included: - the multi-talented Meg McDowell, Year 9, who sang in three different groups as well as playing piano in the Year 11 band - the classy vocals of Miranda McDonald, Year 10, who sang the jazz standard ‘Orange Coloured Sky’ – the exuberant drumming of Vikatoa Topou in the Year 9 band – the all-round guitar skills of Thang Za Thang and Arthur Yuill in various performances – and the wonderful voice of Bonnie Haworth-Hooker who performed in five different songs. We also had a first for a FONO with Jasper Grubacki performing with the Year 9 band on a ‘Keytar’! A big thank you to all the students (listed below) who performed, the friends and family who came to support them and of course our wonderful music staff: Mr Harris, Miss Calder and Mrs Doolan. Dance Showcase

Our theatre was filled with family and friends for the Dance Showcase a few weeks ago. Students in year 7.01, 7.02 and Year 10 Dance performed a variety of dances - solos, duos, group dances and whole class routines. All students showcased their talents and the variety of skills and technique they had learnt throughout the semester. For many of the Year 7s it was their first time performing their own dance in front of an audience, and whilst that can be a scary step, everyone did a wonderful job! Stand out performances were the Mamma Mia girls - Jessie, Alex, Tahlia & Jasmine who challenged themselves with dynamic movement. Another wonderful performance was from the Sunflower group - Taleigha, Mary, Delphine, Eliza who incorporated a prop and creatively approached choreography. A huge round of applause to all performers for their focus throughout the semester and overcoming any nerves to perform in front of family and friends. We look forward to another Dance Showcase with 7.03, 7.04 & 7.05 next semester. Mrs Colette MacLaren

So, you want to be a Journalist? According to the Good Universities Guide, journalists write and edit news reports, commentaries, feature articles and blogs for newspapers, magazines, radio, television and websites, including online publications. Journalists often start as cadets and report routine events. In newspapers and on radio and television, most reporters are expected to be 'generalists' who are able to cover almost any topic of interest. With experience, and sometimes further training, journalists may perform a variety of tasks according to their area of specialisation. Successful journalists need to –

Be able to write clear, concise, objective and accurate material quickly

Have good general knowledge

Have an interest in current events

Have an aptitude to learn keyboard and shorthand skills

Be able to speak clearly when working on radio and television To become a journalist, a student usually has to complete a degree in journalism or in a related field with a major in journalism, followed by a one-year graduate cadetship involving on-the-job training. Alternatively, students can become a journalist by completing a three-year cadetship, during which they receive instruction and gain experience in practical journalism under the supervision of senior journalists. To get into the degree courses students require a VCE, and universities have different prerequisites and some have flexible entry requirements. Job Outlook provides information on the various specialisations in journalism including –

Uniform Shop Hours for 2019

Tuesday 3.15pm - 4.00pm Wednesday 2.00pm – 4.00pm Thursday 8.00am – 8.45am It is important that all second-hand uniforms items offered for sales are in excellent condition. Items should be checked for wear and tear no missing buttons and zippers working. All uniforms must be laundered and no yellow stains under armpits. Items should be

priced at between half and two-thirds of the retail price. Melba College retains 25% of the sale price as a fee for the service. If uniforms have not sold after 9 months the college will reduce the price of the item by $10.00 - $15.00. You can reclaim your items if you do not want the price reduced.
