General News

We have had a great term three with lots of projects across all of the studios, congratulations to the participants for all of their hard work. Hope everyone enjoys a well-earned holiday!!!

The Arts for All - Royal South Street

Monday, Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s Arthur Creative’s three performing art workshops took to the stage at the 2018 Royal South Street Eisteddfod.

There were 15 different performances in total spanning across the categories of Speech and Drama, instrumental, Vocal and Dance. Arthur Creative won fourteen prizes including 4 firsts, 4 seconds, 3 thirds, 3 honorable mentions and 1 highly commended.

Maria Van Ravenstein, came first for her contemporary vocal performance for the second year running. Maria sang ‘We are Australian’, which received a standing ovation.

Jenna Rathgeber was fantastic in her solo dance performance and Boxheads ensemble dance of which she choreographed both.

Jamie Lyons and Kaitlyn Bell received an honorable mention for their wheelchair dance.

All of the performers did a fantastic job and it was great to see a build-up of confidence in individual performers from last year.

Bryce Ives, the adjudicator, artistic director from Theatre Works in St Kilda, gave all the performances feedback which was positive encouraging and honest. Bryce said he felt the Arthur groups had great group dynamics and to keep rehearsing and building on peoples individual skills.

Everyone really enjoyed the experience of having the opportunity to perform and showcase skills, such as choreography, costume design and staging.

A fantastic experience for all the artists involved.

In paintbox this term we finalised works for our successful exhibition at unicorn lane.We were very excited to visit the Ballarat Gallery this Term and view the new acquisitions. We have been continuing with 3D works and mixed media, incorporating gouache, collage and acrylic. A number of our artists have enjoyed using the large easels and taking inspiration from the Gallery's large works. Fantastic work by everyone this term!

Studio Art

Studio Art had a terrific first term finding interest in still life objects and drawing, we explored different drawing and painting projects. We drew bottles, fruit and plants, including sgraffito technique drawing with oil pastels and resist method of drawing on paper with oil pastel and ink wash.

Multi Media Studio

Mixed Media/ Film

This term we worked on individual film ideas and projects. One of the projects was based on a World War 2 period piece inspired by the artists own family experience, this generated a lot of discussion and involved finding, making, researching and setting up of props from this period. Both film and photography were involved in two days of filming a Melba Karden production which will eventually be on the website. This gave the participants the opportunity to be part of a

professional production, using a storyboard and script, making cue cards, operating the camera, using the clapper board and staging lights. The second day we travelled to Lillydale to continue filming. Thank you to Jenna Rathgeber, Liam Abery and Aaron Bligh who came along to assist with the production- great team work from everyone involved!!! Mixed Media/ Film Monday

This term we looked at ‘slap stick’ humour. We took inspiration from the three stooges, Jerry Lewis and Buster Keaton. The group then created their own movie based on these ideas and enjoyed the light-hearted project.

Congratulations to the Monday film group with 2 of their original films being selected to be screened at the ‘Sit Down, Shut Up and Watch’ Film Festival. The festival will be held in South Australia over 19-20 October. Fantastic work guys!!!!

Photography

This term we explored using the instax camera to create atmospheric shots for the exhibition at Unicorn Lane –‘small stuff’. The theme was Interior/Exterior, the artists created their own miniature “set “and then photographed it using the Polaroid camera. The result was lots of great mini instant shots that were part of the exhibition at Unicorn Lane. Further this term we have been re-creating favorite images from film scenes and looking at re-creating album covers, one of which was School of Rock.
