Medical Leadership in PracticeMedical Leadership in Practice is a leadership course for hospital-based higher specialty trainees in the Health Education North West area. It has been developed by Manchester Business School (MBS) and the Health Services Management Centre at the University of Birmingham.

The course has been commissioned by Health Education North West since 2011 to fulfil the requirements of the Medical Leadership Curriculum and meet the specific needs of higher specialty trainees.

Who is the course for?This MBS accredited, leadership course will be of interest to all hospital-based higher specialty trainee doctors working within the area of Health Education North West to help support their current and future leadership roles in healthcare as they take up their first consultant posts.

What are the aims of the course?• to provide an overview of the fundamentals

of leadership theory and practice relevant to doctors working in the English healthcare system

• to support the development of skills relevant to medical leadership

• to facilitate learning through real work-place based projects.

The course will be based on a blended learning approach, consisting of:• work-place based learning through a project

from your current practice and organisation• assessment of self against medical

leadership competencies• directed reading• face to face delivery through workshops

and action learning sets• e-learning, available through MBS’ secure and

dedicated virtual learning environment (VLE)• access to academic faculty as personal tutors.

About the courseThe course has been developed by MBS and its partner the Health Services Management Centre at the University of Birmingham to be delivered across the North West. This brings together two highly experienced academic centres who regularly work with clinicians and managers across a wide range of health services research and development courses.

THE COURSE BRINGS TOGETHER TWO HIGHLY EXPERIENCED ACADEMIC CENTRES WHO REGULARLY WORK WITH CLINICIANS AND MANAGERS ACROSS A WIDE RANGE OF HEALTH SERVICES RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT COURSES.

The course will require approximately 150 hours of study including personal study, attendance at workshops and action learning sets.

There will be two full-day classroom based workshops and two half-day facilitated action learning sets. Attendance is mandatory for both the workshops and the action learning sets. The workshops will consist of lectures, case studies and seminars from academic faculty and speakers from local NHS organisations.

Course structure

Course content The content supports the Medical Leadership Curriculum approved by the General Medical Council (GMC) and the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges and addresses four main themes:

Demonstrating Personal Qualities with particular consideration to time management, goal setting and stress management.

Working with Others through understanding different approaches to leadership, the dynamics of teams, advanced communication skills and presentation skills.

Managing Services by exploring the structures and functions of different NHS organisations including providing and commissioning functions, appreciating the effective management of both financial and human resources and developing and implementing clinical guidelines.

Improving Services with reference to quality management and quality improvement, the effective use of the clinical audit cycle, risk management and dealing with critical incidents and complaints, change management, business planning and business cases .

Course assessmentYou will be required to select a work-place based project at the start of the course and you will be assessed at postgraduate level through two assessments directly related to this project. The assessments will consist of the creation of supporting materials for a presentation and a critical reflection on the experience of the project.

On successful completion of the course you will be awarded 15 postgraduate credits from The University of Manchester. A Masters course consists usually of 180 postgraduate credits. You may for instance then elect to continue your studies on the MSc in Healthcare Management at MBS or another Masters course.

LocationThe course is to be delivered on sites across the North West including Bolton, Manchester and Preston.
