Police constable Mike Warren of Sparkhill Police Station has been charged with im-proper conduct and the handling of 17 year old Sarah Wilks. Wilks was seen by members of the public being taken to Sparkhill Police station for causing loud noise and disturbing behaviour due to being heavily drunk in the early hours of Saturday morning. Wilks was out enjoying her weekend with friends Mela-nie Vaughn, Kim Asher and Otto Bains. They were reported for being drunken and disor-derly by three local shopkeepers, two from supermarkets nearby and the owner of local newsagents. They had been accused of mak-ing excessive noise and constantly wandering in and out of shops harassing customers for various items in the shop they weren’t able to afford and being violent and verbally abusive. Despite all four of the group doing so, Sarah Wilks was taken alone to the station. Dra-matic video footage has emerged of a police sergeant dragging the teenage girl to cell and throwing her inside. This can be seen at www.sparkhilltimes.co.uk. He claims to have “accidently” been a little too harsh than usual, an “accident “that led to his suspension.Wilks was left with severe gashes to the right-hand corner of her fore head and brutal scars across her face. She was also left with

expected of a police officer bringing this unacceptable incident to the attention of another supervisor”Smith said 16,000 people a year were dealt with in Birmingham custody centres in what could be a hostile environment, adding“Whilst that is unacceptable, the reality is that policing is complex and dif-ficult, and again we repeat (that) there can never be any excuse for excessive behav-iour by police officers or police staff”The assistant chief constable said there had been no other serious assaults of this nature, adding “Although there have been a total of 13 complaints of assault, none have been substantiated following investigation”Sarah spent her weekend out on the town with friends celebrating her 17th birthday. She was illegally let into a club without I.D and was later thrown out for drunken and disorderly behaviour. The manager of the club “Legs 11” was called out onto the dance platform to remove the youngster and her friends for disrupting and abusing other customers. The other customers watching the arguments and fighths said “She looked over 18 and she was really bad, like she was pushing people and spitting in their drinks laughing, she looked drugged”The manager of the club have been charged for letting under age customers enter the premises and selling them alcohol.

bruises on both wrists by which she was dragged across the floor of the cell.CCTV footage shows how PC Warren threw Wilks to the ground causing severe injury to the head. She was made unconscious by the force and was left covered in blood. The officer was convicted of assault causing actual bodily harm at Birmingham Magistrates Court last week and is due to be sentenced in mid-march. He faces a formal disciplinary hear-ing next month and is currently suspended on full pay.

Wilks, now 18 told Sparkhill Times “Icouldn’t tell what was going on and I couldn’t control myself because I was drunk but even I knew that how I was being treated was wrong. When I finally gained consciousness, I tried to piece everything together and figure out what had hap-pened, I was still a little out of it but after 10 minutes I fully understood what had happened…..I was scared for my life, I didn’t know if I’d make it out alive. The stories we hear now, we can’t even trust the police anymore, the people who are supposed to help us just make things worse” In a detailed statement, Birmingham Po-lice’s assistant Chief Constable Eric Smith said “We are very concerned when anyone is injured in our custody, and the court has decided that this injury was a result of a criminal assault by Sergeant Mike Warren, full pay.Wilks, now 18 told Sparkhill Times “Icouldn’t tell what was going on and I couldn’t control myself because I was drunk but even I knew that how I was being treated was wrong. She was thrown out at quarter past 10 and left alone wandering the streets drunk.

Half an hour after her dismissal, a nearby corner shop rang the police to report a young girl causing disruption and distress to the customers of his shop. He said “She was clearly drunk and I had to ask her to leave 3 times, every time she left, she’d come back pestering the customers to bguy her alcohol and ciggarettes, I told them all to ignore her but then she’d just attack them”

The youngster has now been fully compen-sated for the behaviour inflicted on her by PC Warren. The manager of the club “Legs 11”will be fined in court this August.
