Foreword

Dear media representative,

Welcome to the Group Phase of the Men’s EHF Cup; the next interesting stage of the competition begins with 16 teams from 13 countries. Germany and Denmark are the only two countries to have more than one team still in the competition. The Group Phase of the Men’s EHF Cup will deliver exciting matches as the teams have everything to play for, and they will be bringing everything they have got to the court. For the 16 teams the elimination process now begins and they know that this is not the time to be complacent - the places available in the quarter-finals are most definitely limited.

In Group A, HSV Hamburg who won the Champions League in 2013 will face Gorenje Velenje (SLO), Haslum Handballklubb (NOR), and Pfadi Winterthur (SUI). St. Petersburg (RUS) and HCM Constanta (ROU) compete against Fraikin BM. Granollers (ESP) and Team Tvis Holstebro (DEN) in Group B. After enjoying the greatest season in the history of the club, FC Porto (POR) enter the Men’s EHF Cup in Group C, their opponents include Füchse Berlin (GER), Skjern Handbold (DEN), and HC Vojvodina (SRB). The only Hungarian team in the competition, Balatonfüredi KSE are aiming to have a great European season hoping to follow in the footsteps of top teams MKB MVM Veszprém and MOL-Pick Szeged. The other teams in Group D are Eskilstuna Guif (SWE), newcomers MT Melsungen (GER), and RK Nexe (CRO).

The Men’s EHF Cup enters its third season and the European Handball Federation continues to revel in the positive development of the competition; especially since the introduction of the Final event that débuted in Nantes. The second edition found its stage in Berlin, where also a new champion will be crowned in 2015 as the previous title holders Rhein-Neckar Löwen (2013) and MOL-Pick Szeged (2014) entered the 2014/15 club handball season in the VELUX EHF Champions League.

We pride ourselves on our positive and cooperative relationship with the press and media and I am sure this will continue and develop in the future. Should you require any information, help or assistance during the course of the season, your first point of contact is the EHF Media and Communications Department based in our office in Vienna. They will be more than happy to assist you with any questions you might have.

We look forward to working with you in the upcoming season!

EHF Cup Finals return to BerlinThe EHF has confirmed that the third edition of the EHF Cup Finals, the final round of the Men’s EHF Cup competition, is to be played in the German capital Berlin for the second year in succession.

Following a highly successful event in 2014, the German Bundesliga club Füchse Berlin will once again play host to the two-day event on 16/17 May 2015.

The contract was signed on the fringes of the final weekend of the Men’s IHF World Championship in Doha, Qatar by EHF Secretary General, Michael Wiederer, EHF Marketing Managing Director, Peter Vargo, and Managing Director of Füchse Berlin, Bob Hanning.

The EHF Cup Finals feature the four top teams in the Men’s EHF Cup, competing over two days for the title with semi-finals played on Saturday (16 May) and final matches on Sunday (17 May).

Commenting on the awarding of the event, Michael Wiederer, EHF Secretary General, said: “Handball is not only about sporting performance, but also major events such as the EHF Cup Finals. We’re pleased to see this event return to Berlin and the opportunity that this offers us to once again showcase top class handball in the German capital.”

Peter Vargo, Managing Director of EHF Marketing GmbH, said: “We were extremely happy with the organisation of the EHF Cup Finals last season, and we are more than confident that Berlin will once again put together a highly attractive sporting and entertainment event in May.”

Bob Hanning, Managing Director of Füchse Berlin, is looking forward to the return of the EHF Cup Finals to Berlin: ”We are extremely proud that the EHF has placed its trust in us once again and are looking forward to offering the handball world another great event. We are of course hoping to fare better on court this year, though we first have to concentrate on the group phase.”

The Men’s EHF Cup Group Phase throws off on 11 February 2015 and features 16 top men’s sides, playing in four groups for a place in the quarter-finals and ultimately for a place in the EHF Cup Finals.

Website launched, tickets on sale

Just two days after the European Handball Federation (EHF) had announced that the EHF Cup Finals will return to Berlin for the 2015 edition, the tournament’s hosts Füchse Berlin launched the official website of the season ending event of the Men’s EHF Cup.

The www.berlinfinals.de website will provide fans and media with all essential information about the tournament throughout the group phase and quarter-final stages until the four best teams of the competition meet in the German capital on 16/17 May 2015.

Handball fans across Europe can also purchase their place at the high-profile event through the website.

The tickets, valid for all four matches, went on sale on Monday and are available in four categories for 49, 69, 99 and 129 euro.

New logo revealed, poster released

The logo presentation o the Men’s EHF Cup Finals is made up of two parts; the Men’s EHF Cup logo and the secondary ‘Finals’ logo (see left) which contains the date and place. These two logos can be used together on promotional material but never to be joined together into one logo.

Füchse have also already launched a new campaign “Berlin Finals Calling” which will see the promotion of the event through posters all over the city, Berlin’s airports and advertising spots in cinemas.

Media Accrediation for the EHF Cup Finals

The accreditation procedure of media representatives for the 2015 EHF Cup Finals will start on 3 March 2015 through the HTML form on the EHF official website. The accreditation procedure will be open to all media professionals and will run until 24 April 2015.

Facts & FiguresBefore the Group Phase of the Men’s EHF Cup

16 teams from 13 different countries have made it to the group phase of the Men’s EHF Cup after some highly thrilling qualification matches in the Round 3.

0 teams have gone all the way from the first qualification round to the group phase.

0 winners of the “new EHF Cup” (since the 2012/13 season) are in this season’s competition: Rhein Neckar Löwen (winner in 2013) and Pick Szeged (2014) are part of the VELUX EHF Champions League Group Phase.

0 teams from France are part of the group phase – in contrast to three teams in the previous season.

0 teams have been part of all group phases, since the playing system has changed.

1 group phase participant has won the “old version” of the EHF Cup. Granollers won this trophy twice in the 1994/95 and the 1995/96 seasons. HSV Hamburg won the Cup Winners’ Cup in the 2006/07 season.

1 EHF European Cup competitions debutant has made it to the group phase: MT Melsungen from Germany.

1 former winner of the VELUX EHF Champions League is among the 16 teams: HSV Hamburg (Germany, winner in 2013). Thus in every season of the merged EHF Cup one former EHF Champions League winner was part of the group phase: SC Magdeburg (2012/13, CL winner in 2002), Montpellier Agglomeration HB (2013/14, CL winner in 2003).

2 of the 16 teams had been part of the first group phase of the EHF Cup in the 2012/13 season: Holstebro and Guif.

3 teams from Germany are among the 16 group phase participants.

3 teams from last season’s group phase have again made it that far: Füchse Berlin (GER), Skjern Handbold (DEN) and HCM Constanta (ROU).

3 teams are among those 16 which had been part of EHF Cup finals: Team Tvis Holstebro (DEN, 2013), Füchse Berlin (GER) and HCM Constanta (ROU, both in 2014). All three did not make it to the final.

3 teams were lucky to qualify for the group phase thanks to the away goal rule in the qualification: Berlin, Hamburg and Granollers. Their aggregate results were ties, but thanks to scoring the higher number of goals in their away matches, they are part of the group phase now.

3 countries, which had been represented in last season’s group phase, are out in this season: France, Slovakia and FYR Macedonia.

4 countries represent the EHF Cup winners since the original implementation in the 1993/94 season: Germany (15 titles), Spain (4), Croatia and Hungary (each 1).

4 of the 16 teams played in the VELUX EHF Champions League last season: HSV Hamburg (GER), Gorenje Velenje (SLO), St. Petersburg HC (RUS) and FC Porto (POR).

4 current national champions have qualified for the EHF Cup group phase: Haslum (NOR), Vojvodina (SRB), Porto (POR) and Constanta (ROU). Those teams had failed on way to the qualification for the VELUX EHF Champions League group phase and continued in qualification for the EHF Cup.

4 countries are represented for the first time in the group phase of the EHF Cup: Croatia, Russia, Serbia and

Page 13: Media Guide - European Handball Federationcms.eurohandball.com/.../MEHFC_Media_Info_GP_14-15_print.pdf · 4 Foreword Dear media representative, Welcome to the Group Phase of the Men’s

13

Switzerland. In addition, clubs from Norway and Slovenia were not part of the group phase last previous season.

4 teams turned an away defeat in the first leg of Round 3 into qualification for the group phase: Haslum, Balatonfüredi, St. Petersburg and Granollers.

7 teams have already played four qualification matches, as they began their campaign in Round 2: Nexe, Balatonfüredi, Skjern, Holstebro, Winterthur, Guíf and Melsungen.

13 different countries are represented by those 16 clubs. While Germany have three group phase participants and Denmark two, Croatia, Spain, Hungary, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Slovenia, Serbia, Switzerland and Sweden are represented by one team each. Seven of those countries (DEN, ESP, GER, HUN, POR, ROU, SWE) were represented in last season’s group phase.

27 goals was the biggest winning margin in qualification round 3: Skjern scored an aggregate result of 72:45 against Oroshazi (HUN).

36 goals were scored by Marcel Hees (Pfadi Winterthur) to sit on top of the scorers list prior to the start of the group phase. Second best scorer of the teams still involved is Balasz Szöllösi (Balatonfüredi), who found the net 29 times.

48 group matches will decide the six or eight teams to proceed to the quarter-finals.

Page 14: Media Guide - European Handball Federationcms.eurohandball.com/.../MEHFC_Media_Info_GP_14-15_print.pdf · 4 Foreword Dear media representative, Welcome to the Group Phase of the Men’s

14

For the third year in a row, a new winner will have to be found in the Men’s EHF Cup and the lucky team will come from the group phase which starts this week. 2013 winners Rhein-Neckar Löwen are in the VELUX EHF Champions League this season, and this also applies not only to last year’s winners Pick Szeged but also to their opponents in the final Montpellier Agglomeration HB.

However, maybe the winners are still to be found among the four participants in the Finals last season, as both losing semi-finalists from the final weekend in Berlin are to be found in this season’s edition of the tournament. Füchse Berlin and HCM Constanta, who finished third and fourth respectively last year, are both in the group phase and both are in with a chance of not only repeating last season’s semi-final berth, but also going a step further. Füchse may have an advantage in that respect as they will have the home advantage once again should they make it to the final tournament. The Max-Schmeling-Halle will welcome the top four sides on 16/17 May. Six or eight quarter-final spots at stake At first sight, the modus of the tournament is quite simple. Number one and two in each of the four groups qualify for the quarter-finals, from which the winners obviously proceed to Berlin. However, some things depend on the way hosts Füchse perform in the group phase. If Füchse win their group or finish among the three best second ranked teams in the group phase, they qualify directly for the EHF Cup Finals. This means that there will only be three quarter-finals instead of four, and that the worst second ranked team will be out of the tournament. In case Füchse finish second in their group and are also the worst ranked number two in all the groups, they will have to play the quarter-finals, and there will be four quarter-finals. If Füchse finish third or fourth in their group, they will be out of the tournament, and the quarter-finals will be played between eight teams as usual. Favourites hard to spot If they make it all the way to the Finals again, Füchse may be considered to be among the favourites again. However, it is generally difficult to point out really big favourites among the 16 teams in the group phase in what looks like the most even EHF Cup since the current tournament system was introduced in 2012. Of course, it is always natural to look for the German Bundesliga to find favourites, and that is what most coaches in the 16 remaining teams tend to be doing. A club with proud European traditions like HSV Hamburg will always draw some attention. However, the Northern German team had problems getting past Swedish side IFK Kristianstad in the third and last qualification round for the group phase, and their current 11th place in the Bundesliga does not point towards a favourite either. Other German teams may seem more likely as possible winners. We mentioned Füchse already. The Foxes may only be one step above Hamburg in the current Bundesliga table, but the possible home advantage in the finals speaks in favour of Füchse. Their talented young left back Paul Drux must have returned from the World Championship in Qatar with additional self-confidence, and that may come in useful for Füchse. We also have to mention the third German team in the competition. A lack of European experience may speak against MT Melsungen, but the current number six in the Bundesliga possesses a lot of potential and their group does not look frightening. If we are going to look for possible tournament winners outside of Germany, there are a couple of dark horses to keep an eye on. One of those could be Team Tvis Holstebro, who sprung a surprise two years ago by reaching the Finals and finishing third. The Danish team’s charismatic coach Klavs Bruun Jørgensen will undoubtedly want to finish his time with Holstebro in style, before taking over as the Denmark women’s national team coach, and what better way to say goodbye after three years than by going all the way in the EHF Cup? Another possible dark horse could be Futebol Clube de Porto, who did quite well in the group phase of the VLUX EHF Champions League last season and have gained a taste for big matches in Europe.

2013 VELUX EHF Champions League winners HSV Hamburg faced tough times in 2014. Due to financial reasons it was even unclear if the club would manage to play in the first German league. The trophy-winning coach Martin Schwalb was sacked and he later also suffered a heart-attack.

A huge number of top stars like Canellas, Duvnjak, Nilsson, Lackovic and Markovic left the club and the new arrivals are from a complete different level than the previous signings. But the club managed to survive, as president and main sponsor Andreas Rudolph stepped in again, also installing a new club management headed by former German national team player Christian Fitzek.

In contrast to previous years - HSV played seven straight times in the VELUX EHF Champions League and made it twice to the VELUX EHF FINAL4 in Cologne - the goals are not the same anymore in the Bundesliga, but on international level Hamburg want to complete their collection of silverware after winning the former Cup Winners’ Cup in 2007.

After eliminating Swedish side Kristianstad in a highly close manner, HSV now will face Winterthur, Velenje and Haslum in the group phase. After French Christian Gaudin had taken over the coaches’ position from Schwalb in summer 2014, he was already replaced in December by assistant coach Jens Häussler.

For team captain and 2007 world champion Pascal Hens “it is always something very special to compete on international ground. We are looking forward to matches against opponents we did not face that often.”

Haslum Handballklubb has managed to qualify for the group phase of the EHF Cup for the first time in the club’s history. The Norwegian champions failed in the VELUX EHF Champions League qualification against Turkish side Besiktas, but then beat Russian club Volgograd in the qualification for this competition.

Now Haslum will face tough opponents in Group A in the form of former Champions League winners HSV Hamburg, Swiss side Winterthur and experienced Champions League side Velenje from Slovenia.

Despite those high hurdles coach Tom Eirik Skarpsno was happy with the draw: “We have the chance to meet some of Europe’s best teams. Of course, it will be a special experience for us to play against Hamburg in particular.”

He coaches an all-Scandinavian team, mainly with Norwegian players and two from Sweden. One of their top stars from the previous season, Thomas Kristensen, left to Ademar Leon (Spain) and the Norwegian top talent Sander Sagosen to Champions League participant Aalborg.

Manager Petter Andersen hopes for a huge audience in their new arena in Oslo, mainly when they face their German opponent: “I believe that the Norwegian spectators will see great matches. And from the sporting point of view our young team will gain great experience by playing in the EHF Cup Group Phase.”

Team captain Anders Røe thinks that “everything is possible, and why not trying to qualify for the quarterfinals? It is going to a tough spring for us with 13 matches in six weeks, but we’re up for it.”

As finalists in the old format of the EHF Cup, two Slovenian championships in the past three seasons and two consecutive appearances at the Last 16 stage of of the VELUX EHF Champions League, Gorenje Velenje are without a doubt among the most experienced sides in the EHF Cup Group Phase.

Already in the qualification Ivan Vajdl’s team proved their strengths and ambitions, beating Russian side Permskie Medvedi twice in a clear way. In Group A Velenje will face Hamburg, Haslum and Winterthur.

The upcoming stage is only an intermediate part of their grand scheme to reach the EHF Cup Finals, as manager Tomaž Juršič says: “We are glad that we reached the group phase, but this is not our final goal. We are aiming much higher.

“We have an interesting group. In addition to us there are also our “old friends” Hamburg and Winterthur. The German team we know from the last year’s Champions League and the Swiss we met in a friendly match last year.

“It will be hard but I think we have the quality to proceed to the quarter-finals. That is our goal for now but much more will be known after the completion of this stage.”

Team captain Niko Medved goes one step further: “Our goal is to be part of the EHF Cup Finals. Hamburg is the strongest team in our group and if they play at 100% then I think the first place in the group is reserved for the German team. For the second place it’s hard to say. My opinion is that it’s going to be decided between Gorenje and Winterthur.”

For more than a decade Pfadi were the leading force in Swiss handball, becoming domestic champions nine times until 2004 and making it at least to the quarter-finals of all EHF European Cup competitions (Champions League, EHF Cup, Cup Winners’ Cup, City Cup and Challenge Cup). In 2001 Winterthur even managed to reach the final of the Challenge Cup.

Now Pfadi is the first Swiss team to reach the group phase of the “new” EHF Cup. The team of head coach Adrian Brüngger will face Haslum, Hamburg and Velenje in Group A. The club’s best known new arrival is highly experienced Lithuanian goalkeeper Arunas Vaskevicius, who had been part of Kadetten Schaffhausen’s Champions League squad in the past. Now Pfadi will start their international adventure and at the same time hope to raise a trophy in domestic competition.

Manager Bruno Schenk is eagerly looking forward to the maiden voyage in the group phase: “We are very proud, having reached this stage of competition. This will be a big sporting and financial challenge, but with the great passion we have within our club, we will take this hurdle in a good manner.”

Team captain Marcel Hess hopes that the European journey will continue after the group phase: “The team of Pfadi Winterthur is thrilled to have reached the next step in the EHF Cup. Regardless of the competitive opponents we are dedicated to show our best handball to let the great adventure continue.”

They were the surprise package of the previous EHF Cup competition – and now HCM Constanta aim to continue in the same vein this time around. The Romanian champions and cup winners made it all the way to the 2014 EHF Cup Finals in Berlin, before going on to finish in fourth following defeats to Montpellier and Berlin.

Constanta are back in the EHF Cup Group Phase after beating Norwegian side Elverum in the final qualification round, having failed to reach the VELUX EHF Champions League Group Phase, falling to Turkish champions Besiktas. Stars Alexandru Simicu (HSV Hamburg) and Alexandru Csepreghi (Creteil) may have left, but Macedonian head coach Zvonko Sundovski still has a number of internationally experienced players to call upon, including Montenegrin international Mladen Rakcevic.

Club director Ali Nurhan hopes to recapture the magic of 2014. He said: “Our team’s objective is to proceed from the group phase and then to reach EHF Cup Finals again, like last year in Berlin. It was a great and spectacular experience for our team and with hard work we can compete with the best four teams in this competition.”

Team captain Laurentiu Toma shares those hopes as he added: “The main international objective is to qualify for the EHF Cup Finals like last season. Even though it’s very difficult for us, because each team has equal opportunities, we will play until the last chance, and we’ll give all the best to make our country and supporters feel proud of us.”

Granollers is a big name in the history of Spanish, and international, handball.

The club, based close to Barcelona, is the only former EHF Cup winner among the 16 teams that have reached this season’s group phase, with the Catalans lifting the trophy in 1995 and 1996, in the competition’s previous format.

In 2011, Granollers were knocked out of the EHF Cup in the Last 16, but now – after a long absence – they are back in the big time, and have high hopes for this campaign.

Under new coach Carlos Viver Arza, who previously led the club’s women’s team, Granollers eliminated Sporting in qualification on the away goals rule.

The main goal for the club this term is to build on this qualification by securing a spot in next year’s competition through their Liga ASOBAL ranking, and to go all the way to the EHF Cup Finals, in their 21st run on the European stage.

But their Group B opponents will not make life easy for them. St. Petersburg (RUS) and Constanta (ROU) both have VELUX EHF Champions League experience while Holstebro (DEN) recently reached the EHF Cup Finals themselves.

And Granollers’ cause is not helped by the departure of the key South American duo of Argentine goalkeeper Matias Schulz, who left for Nantes, and Chilean Rodrigo Salinas, now with Steaua Bucuresti.

After four consecutive years of reaching the group phase of the VELUX EHF Champions League, HC St. Petersburg are taking their first steps in the EHF Cup – the first Russian side to do so at this stage.

St. Petersburg have finished as runners-up in their domestic league six times in a row - behind Chekhovskie Medvedi on each occasion - but will be aiming for top spot in Group B after beating Hungarian side Tatabanya to qualify.

Dmitry Torgovanov’s men will face Constanta (ROU), Granollers (ESP) and Holstebro (DEN) in the group phase, but boast a team full of international talent and have a coach in his fifth season in charge. One key man missing, however, is left winger Sergey Kuzmin, after a knee injury ruled him out for the rest of the season.

The Neva-based club failed to advance to the knockout stages of the Champions League in each of the past four seasons, but club director Sergey Ziza is cautiously confident they can make that jump this time around.

“All four teams in our group are almost equals, so it will be hard for us to make it to the quarter-finals, but this is our goal,” he said.

“Maybe our expectations will be changed, because first of all we have to see the level of our opponents.”

Team captain Eldar Nasyrov remains humble too. He added: “It will be interesting to play against our opponents, at the same time I hope that our goal will not only be the participation, but also a good result.”

Team Tvis Holstebro face some of the longest journeys in the EHF Cup Group Phase, but hope to extend the adventure for as long as possible - emulating their trip to the 2013 finals in Nantes.

Coach Klavs Bruun Jørgensen has bolstered his young squad with the signings of experienced stars Anders Oechsler, and Jonas Larholm, who lifted the EHF Cup with Pick Szeged last season. The Danes line-up in Group B along with Constanta (ROU), Granollers (ESP) and St. Petersburg (RUS), having recorded three wins and a draw in their qualification matches against Kriens (SUI) and Bacau (ROU).

Bruun Jørgensen would have liked to face a German team in the group phase, but while his wish did not come true, his objectives remain the same.

“There is no doubt that our goal is to go on from the group, and preferably as number one,” he said.

Manager Jacob Jørgensen meanwhile expects a very close group. “We are going to play against three very good teams, but if we play at our highest level, we will have a fair chance to fulfil our objective, and move on to the quarter-finals,” said Jørgensen.

Team captain Allan Damgaard hopes to relive the success of 2013. He said: “It’s a tough group, but we will play our best. I think we can use some of our experience from the 2012/13 season. It would be very nice to be a part of EHF Cup Finals again.”

The 2013/14 season was a historic one for FC Porto. The Portuguese side became the only club to claim their domestic title for the sixth year in succession and they advanced to the VELUX EHF Champions League Group Phase for the first time.

This term, attention turns to the EHF Cup and an even longer run in this competition for Ljubomir Obradovic’s men, after they fell to Ukrainian side Motor Zaporozhye in qualification for the top flight competition. Porto then pulled off a shock in reaching this stage by overcoming Spanish powerhouse Ademar Leon.

Despite the departure of some top talent, including line player Tiago Rocha, who has joined Polish giants Wisla Plock, the squad remains strong and it will need to be, if they are to emerge from Group C. Porto have been pitted against Vojvodina (Serbia), Berlin (Germany) and Skjern (Denmark) in one of the tougher line-ups in the competition, but club director Manuel Arezes insists his side are ready to make their mark once more.

“After a historic qualification for the group phase of the EHF Cup, FC Porto will try to reach the quarter-finals and continue making history in this competition. The experience from last season’s Champions League participation might be a good help, as well as the support of a crowd that loves handball. We invite everyone to join FC Porto on this fantastic journey,” he said.

Team captain Ricardo Moreira added: “We are so happy that we qualified for the group phase and our only goal is to continue to achieve more and more, so we’re really working for that to happen.”

Serbia will be represented in the EHF Cup Group Phase for the first time since the implementation of the current system and HC Vojvodina are proud to be the team to fly the flag.

The three-time Serbian champions might not have experienced this stage of the competition before, but their impressive home, Spens Arena, has already hosted matches in the Men’s and Women’s EHF EURO, the 2013 Women’s World Championship and the final of the SEHA Liga.

Vojvodina were then drawn in Group C, where they will face Skjern (DEN), Berlin (GER) and Porto (POR) and will therefore be delighted to welcome back long-term injury absentees Danimir Curković and Nikola Arsenić against the difficult troika.

Coach Djordje Cirkovic has an almost entirely Serbian squad to pick from, with Bosnia and Georgia the only other countries represented, each with one player. Cirkovic previously led Vojvodina between 2010 and 2012, before returning for the 2013/14 season - ending the long series of successes in the Serbian league for Belgrade-based teams such as Partizan and Red Star.

Club director Darko Jevtic is honoured that his club will participate in the group phase. He said: “It obliges us to be more efficient and more organised. By qualifying for the group phase we have given the fans in Serbia at least three handball spectacles, and we must be worthy of it.”

Team captain, Curkovic, added: “The opportunity to compete with top European teams, is not an everyday opportunity, so we will give our best to stay in the EHF Cup as long as possible.”

Füchse Berlin are aiming to continue their impressive recent record in European competition having squeezed through to the EHF Cup Group Phase. The German cup winners made it all the way to the VELUX EHF FINAL4 in their maiden Champions League campaign back in 2012 before reaching the EHF Cup Finals in the German capital last season.

Berlin lost to eventual winners Pick Szeged (HUN), but will hope to go one better this term with the final tournament returning to the Max-Schmeling Halle. They almost did not make it this far, however. Dagur Sigurdsson’s men required the away goals rule to come through their qualification tie with HBC Nantes.

Füchse’s desire to take the title is heightened by the fact that captain Iker Romero and coach Sigurdsson will leave the club at the end of the campaign.

Romero is set to retire in June while Sigurdsson will focus on his work as German national team coach with his successor, Erlingur Richardsson, already identified.

Sigurdsson can once again call on a talented squad, but has had to adapt following injury problems, leading to the signing of Serbian star Petar Nenadic ahead of entering Group C, where they will face Porto (POR), Vojvodina (SRB) and Skjern (DEN).

Bob Hanning, Managing Director of Füchse Berlin, is looking forward to the return of the EHF Cup Finals to Berlin: ”We are extremely proud that the EHF has placed its trust in us once again and are looking forward to offering the handball world another great event.

For Spaniard Romero it would be a dream come true to finish his career at the EHF Cup Finals. “We have strong opponents. But we were in the EHF Cup Finals last year and we want to reach this stage again. We live for our dream of a European title,” he said.

Skjern Handbold take part in the EHF Cup Group Phase for the first time in its current format after winning all four of their qualification games. The Danish club maintained a perfect record through four contests with Bregenz (AUT) in round 2 and Oroshazi (HUN) in round 2.

Skjern boast impressive EHF Cup pedigree having reached the semi-finals in 2007, but face a tough test to reach that stage this time around. Ole Nørgaard’s men have been drawn in a strong Group C alongside Berlin (GER), Vojvodina (SRB) and Porto (POR), and their coach anticipates a real battle to advance.

“Our team will fight with Porto for the second position below Berlin,” said Nørgaard.

Skjern’s top signing prior to the start of the season was the towering Danish international Nikolaj Markussen, who stands at 2.11m tall and returned to his home country after playing for Atletico Madrid and Qatar side El-Jaish. Another well-known face in Skjern’s squad is right back Kasper Söndergaard.

Team manager Anders Dahl-Nielsen, former coach of Champions League holders Flensburg-Handewitt, said: “[I expect] six thrilling matches in February and March. We know it will be difficult to reach the quarter-finals due to the strong opponents. But we also have a strong team, stronger then last year, and we believe in ourselves.”

MT Melsungen have reached the EHF Cup Group Phase in their maiden campaign in European competition, having seen off the challenge of some tough teams in qualification.

Under the stewardship of head coach, Michael Roth, who earned a silver medal at the 1984 Olympic Games playing for West Germany, the German club overcame French powerhouse Toulouse. This was followed by something of a personal triumph for Roth, who got one over on his old assistant Peter David, and David’s current side Tatran Presov in Qualifying Round 3.

It seems their run of success stretched to the draw for the group stage too, placed in Group D against Balatonfüredi, Guif and Nexe, giving them a strong chance of extending their European adventure into the quarter-finals. Roth’s men also harbour hopes of returning to the international scene next season via the German Bundesliga, as they celebrate 10 years in that competition.

Manager Axel Geerken cannot wait for the action to begin. “Our first participation in a European competition is the most successful chapter in our history of more than 80 years as a club,” he said.

“Over and above that, MT Melsungen is the first handball club in our region to play in an international competition. In addition to the team, many helping hands in the background have contributed to this success. We are very proud to have reached the group phase of EHF Cup. Our opponents in Group D are internationally much more experienced than us, but still we are very ambitious and hope to reach the quarter-finals.”

Pick Szeged became Hungary’s first winners of the EHF Cup last season, but having moved on to take part in the VELUX EHF Champions League, it is up to Balatonfüredi KSE to fly the flag this time around. Balatonfüredi KSE have developed a reputation as something of a farm club for VELUX EHF FINAL4 participants Veszprem, developing players on their way to the top.

But it is two players who have moved in the opposite direction who form the basis of Istvan Csoknyai’s current squad with ex-Veszprem men Tamas Ivancsik and Uros Vilovski, key to the Balatonfüredi KSE’s plans. Under the guidance of new president Janos Erpel, the club achieved their greatest success in Europe, reaching the EHF Cup Group Phase after eliminated Astrakhan (Russia) and Hard (Austria) during their qualification campaign.

Csoknyai’s men will compete with two other newcomers to the competition in Group D facing up against Nexe (CRO) and Melsungen (GER) as well as the more experienced Guif (SWE).

Winger Boka Bendeguz is the club’s chief injury concern heading into the group phase, but playing their home games at the famous Veszprem Arena could give the Hungarian side a boost. Csoknyai is delighted to have made it this far, but hopes to extend the club’s maiden voyage for a while yet.

He said: “I am satisfied with our group, looking at the other groups I must say we were lucky and have a chance to play some great games with excellent teams. Our aim for this year was to gain international experience but this does not mean that we will not fight for qualification.”

Two years ago, Eskilstuna Guif were taught a lesson during the EHF Cup Group Phase – six times, failing to gain a single point as they lost each Group A game. But the Swedish side hope to use that experience to their advantage as they target a place in the quarter-finals this time around.

After eliminating SonderjyskE (DEN) and Huesca (ESP) in qualification, Guif earned a favourable draw, which pits them against Balatonfüredi, Melsungen and Nexe in Group D. Coach Kristjan Andrésson can count on a stronger squad than last season, with no departures, four new arrivals, and Patrik Johansson the only long-term injury absentee.

The four-time Swedish league runners-up hope to finish among the top four in their domestic competition to qualify for European competition once more.

But they have their sights set on the last eight of the EHF Cup too.

“We aim for the quarter-finals,” said Andrésson, who also acts as the manager.

His team know what to expect from some of their Group D opponents with Melsungen including three Swedish internationals in their squad while Nexe centre back Luka Sokolic, was part of the Guif squad during the 2012/13 season.

RK Nexe are celebrating their 55th anniversary with perhaps their greatest success - reaching the EHF Cup Group Phase. The Nasice club have long lived the shadow of domestic rivals RK PPD Zagreb, but will now welcome the European spotlight after cruising to qualification with victories against BESA Famiglia and Potaissa Turda.

The Croatian runners-up and cup finalists, nicknamed ‘Thunders of Krndija’ - taking that name from the mountain near Nasice - will face Melsungen, Guif and Balatonfüredi in Group D.

“It is a big privilege for us to be a part of such a big competition. Our main goal is to play quality handball in Europe and I’m sure we will do that, we’re a good, quality team,” said coach Zdenko Kordi.

Kordi’s team is made up almost entirely of Croatian talent with only one player, Turkish right back Can Çelebi, coming from outside the country. It is Nexe’s goal to hold on to second spot in Croatia while challenging for a place in the last eight of the EHF Cup.

But manager Josip Ergović anticipates a tight battle for second spot in Group D.

“We are very happy to be part of the group phase of the EHF Cup, our main goal is fulfilled,” he said. “The group is very interesting and we are pleased with it. There are some of the finest European clubs with Melsungen, who are favourites a little more than the others. We think that we have a chance of reaching the quarter-finals as well as the other clubs. We will try to win every game. I hope that we will play all our home games in front of stands full of our fans.”
