Dear handball friends,

As we count down to the DELO WOMEN’S EHF FINAL4 in Budapest on 11-12 May 2019, the next and most exciting phase of Europe’s top competition is upon us. After 92 matches, we are left with eight outstanding teams from seven countries: Hungary, Romania, Norway, Montenegro, Russia, Denmark and France. Only one hurdle stands between the top sides and a ticket to Budapest.

It is with great pleasure that we welcome these remarkable teams to the quarter-finals. While six of them have reached this stage of the competition in the past, it is going to be a brand new experience for two clubs – Odense HC and Vipers Kristiansand.

The quarter-final pairings open several interesting possibilities for the final tournament in Papp László Budapest Sportaréna, as four former WOMEN’S EHF FINAL4 participants face four sides who are yet to make their debut in the Hungarian capital.

Two of the quarter-final pairings are identical to the previous edition, but the current form of these teams promises some exciting clashes. FTC-Rail Cargo Hungaria, who impressed with their main round finish, take on Rostov-Don again and are eager to succeed this time around. A quarter-final success would see them playing in front of a home crowd in the Hungarian capital.

Exactly like last year, Metz Handball have the chance to become the first French team to reach the final weekend in Budapest. However, they must overcome the biggest test of their impressive season and defeat the 2016 champions, CSM Bucuresti, who are tackling serious injury problems.

For the Danish newcomers from Odense, a ticket to the final tournament would be a fantastic achievement in what is their maiden EHF Champions League season. Their opponents, the defending champions Györi Audi ETO KC, will be keen to reach the most prestigious event in women’s club handball for the fourth straight time as they eye a record fifth trophy.

Two-time winners Buducnost have been pitted against Vipers Kristiansand in a pairing that will end with the Montenegrin side making their fifth trip to the final tournament or Vipers stopping a three-year run without a Norwegian club in the ultimate stage of the competition.

Even before the final matches have been played the 2018/19 season has already been a remarkable success – and not only because it has reached new heights, with a total of 24 TV stations covering more than 50 territories. The new two-year sponsorship deal with the Delo Group, signed in February, is a major breakthrough for the women’s game. The cooperation begins this season with the new title sponsor adding its name to the 2019 edition of the DELO WOMEN’S EHF FINAL4.

Important regulationsWhat decides when two or more teams have the same number of points

All matches of the WOMEN’S EHF Champions League shall be played in 2 x 30 minutes with a half-time break of 15 minutes.

The matches shall be scored as follows:a) win = 2 pointsb) draw = 1 pointc) loss = 0 points

Teams’ rankings are obtained by adding up the number of points won.

GROUP MATCHES AND MAIN ROUNDIf two or more teams have scored the same number of points, the ranking will be determined as follows:During the matches of the group:a) higher goal difference in all matches;b) greater number of plus goals in all matches;

After completion of the group if two teams have scored the same number of points:a) number of points in matches of the two teams directly involved;b) goal difference in matches of the two teams directly involved;c) higher number of goals scored in the away match of the two teams directly involved;d) goal difference in all matches of the group;e) higher number of plus goals in all matches of the group;

After completion of the group if three or more teams have scored the same number of points:a) number of points in matches of all teams directly involved;b) goal difference in matches of all teams directly involved;c) higher number of plus goals in matches of all teams directly involved;d) goal difference in all matches of the group;e) higher number of plus goals in all matches of the group;f) higher ranking in Group Matches (Main Round only)g) greater number of points in Group Matches (Main Round only)

* If the ranking of one of these teams is determined, the criteria are consecutively followed until the ranking of all teams is determined.

* If no ranking can be determined, a decision shall be obtained by drawing lots. Lots shall be drawn by the EHF, if possible in the presence of team managers.

QUARTER-FINALS

If, after completion of the two matches, both teams have won the same number of points (no extra-time will be played), the teams’ standings shall be determined by the following criteria:a) goal differenceb) greater number of plus goals scored in away matchc) penalty throws

RULES FOR EXECUTION OF PENALTY THROWS

- Prior to penalty throwing, each team shall name five players eligible to play at the end of the match by handing the referees a list of numbers. These players shall then take one throw each until a decision (a winner) is reached, alternating with their opponents. Each team is free to determine the sequence in which throwers will take their throws

- The goalkeepers may be freely selected from the match report and exchanged in accordance with the Rules of the game. Goalkeepers may take throws and throwers may play as goalkeepers.

- The referees shall choose the goal at which throws are taken. The team taking the first penalty throw shall be determined by the referees by drawing lots. The team winning the draw may choose whether it wishes to throw first or last.

- If scores are equal after the first round of penalty throwing, it shall be continued until a decision is reached. In the second round, the other team shall start. Again five players shall be named who are eligible to play (the players named before may be named once again).

- In the second round, a decision (a winner) is reached when a goal difference arises after both teams have taken one throw each.

- Eligible players are players entered in the match report who have not been disqualified or suspended at the time of the final whistle.

- Serious infractions committed during penalty throwing shall be sanctioned by disqualification. If a thrower is disqualified or suffers an injury, an eligible substitute player shall be named supplementary.

- While the throws are being taken, only the player taking the throw, the current goalkeeper and the referees may enter the respective half of the playing area.

- If the number of eligible players falls below five, players may be named to take a second throw in the same round.

• this is the third time in a row Metz have qualified for the Women’s EHF Champions League quarter-finals

Katrine Lunde goalkeeper• one of the best goalkeepers in the world, with a huge collection of trophies won with both her clubs and the Norwegian national team

• her move to Rostov-Don after five years at Hungary’s Györ was one of the biggest transfers in 2015

• joined Vipers two years later to be reunited with her twin sister, Kristine

Emilie Hegh Arntzen left back• joined Vipers from league rivals Byasen ahead of the 2017/18 season

• daughter of former Norwegian international Hanne Hegh and former assistant coach of Norway’s female national team, Ketil Arntzen

• started playing handball at age eight and started her senior career in Gjerpen, the club she reached the Norwegian top flight with

Jeanett Kristiansen left back• after two stints with Glassverket and one year in Larvik, she joined Vipers in 2016

• from a real handball family: her older sister Veronica has joined CL winners Györ for the 2018/19 season, while another sister, Charlotte, is also a handball player

• formerly played on the left wing at Larvik but was used on the left back position during her time at Glassverket

Marta Tomac centre back• joined Vipers from Byasen in 2015; played for Danish side SK Aarhus in 2010/11

• missed almost the entire 2017/18 season after tearing an ACL, but is back at full strength for the 2018/19 season

• born in Zagreb, Croatia, and represented Croatia before playing for Norway

• good at both ends of the court, and her ability to read the game, as well as her eye for her teammates in the attack, make her an all-round opponent

• made her international breakthrough when Norway won the EHF EURO in 2016

• practices athletics until taking up handball at the age of 17

• forms an excellent right back duo with Linn Jørum Sulland

Hanna Yttereng line player• joined from league rivals Byasen in the summer of 2018 as a replacement for Kari Brattset, who has left for Györ

• played with stars like Nora Mørk and Stine Bredal Oftedal in the Norwegian junior national team which won the WCh 2010

• has played abroad for SG BBM Bietigheim (GER) and Kisvarda (HUN)

• consistent line player with a good shot, strong at both ends of the court

Malin Aune right wing• joined Vipers from Oppsal in the summer of 2017

• her greatest triumph so far was winning the gold medal with the Norwegian national team at EHF EURO 2016

• only 1.65 m tall, but her speed, technical skills and willpower sufficiently compensate
