10

After a three year absence from European Cup competitions, the 2011 and 2012 winner of the “old” EHF Cup qualified again for an international competition. The qualification stage with matches against Polish side Gornik Zabrze was anything but a high hurdle for Frisch Auf Göppingen, as they won both duels by an overall goal difference of +19. At that stage, Göppingen had hoped for hosting the EHF Cup Finals, but failed with their bid - against their group phase opponent HBC Nantes.

After a surprising opening defeat at Holstebro, Göppingen were awake and mainly unbeatable on home ground. Winning all three matches at EWS-Arena including the close 27:26 against later-on group winners Nantes, the team of Swedish born head coach Magnus Andersson paved the way to the quarter-finals. After winning the direct encounter against Holstebro by a clear 36:23 the gate was open, but Göppingen needed to wait until the away win at OCI Lions in the final round until the berth for the next stage was clinched.

Not only thanks to their 40:20 against the Dutch champions on home ground - the clearest win in all group matches, Göppingen finally had the best attack of all 16 teams (198 goals) and the best goal difference (+37) of all contenders. But funny enough not their internationally experienced top stars such as German World Champion Michael Kraus or Serbian EURO 2012 silver medallist Zarko Sesum were their top scorers in the EHF Cup so far, but the young guns Marcel Schiller (42) and Andreas Berg (36), both left wings and counter attack experts.

On domestic ground, the chance to make it again to the European Cup competitions is still there, as Frisch Auf currently are ranked seventh in the Bundesliga, in the German Cup they failed in the quarter-finals, as they were defeated by their upcoming EHF Cup opponent Magdeburg 29:25 in the quarter-finals. However, they paid it back to their domestic rivals in the EHF Cup Quarter-finals as they reached Nantes at Magdeburg’s expense.

Chambery are the only team to have finished the group phase undefeated. If you could argue their opponents were not the toughest you could find, they still managed to remain serious until the end, getting their quarter finals ticket two games before the end of the phase.

After beating title holders Füchse Berlin in the third qualification round, Chambery faced Ystad in their first group game and deserved a large home win. For the second game the French struggled against Bucuresti, coming back from Romania with a lucky draw. In fact, the Romanians were the only team against which Chambery did not win, both games ended in a draw. But that did not really matter since both Helvetia Anaitasuna and Ystad could not snatch a point against them. Timothey N’Guessan was the best scorer of the team, with 37 goals, while Melvyn Richardson, at only 19, is one of the best surprises of the competition so far. Able to play both on the centre back and the right back position, Jackson’s son proved to be one of the key asset in his team, and his talent will surely be needed in the national clash against Saint Raphaël.

In an exciting all-French affair they lost the first leg by five goals but in the dying minutes of the return leg managed to climb back and clinched their ticket to the final tournament.

Granollers qualified to the quarterfinals in a heart attack game against Aalborg in the last round of the group phase. The Catalan team only needed to win or draw to be in the next round, but the Denmark’s side was very near to ruin the dream of Granollers. Palau d’Esports de Granollers, the venue of the team, had the best attendance of the season to help its team to pass the round. Ferran Solé scored the goal that draw the game (24:24) and the Catalans reached the EHF Cup quarter-finals after 11 years.

The team of Carlos Viver began the group phase with a lost against Dinamo Bucuresti at home. They won the first two points in Denmark on court of Aalborg but they lost again in Germany – against Magdeburg. But the team won the next two important games, against Magdeburg at home - in the best match of the team in this group phase - and they won in Romania against Dinamo Bucuresti which propelled them to the top of the group. After a draw in the last game they finished the group phase in the second position with 7 points, 1 below Magdeburg, the first one. At the beginning of the season, the left back Juan del Arco - maybe the best player of the team - transferred to El Jaish (Qatar). It was an important loss for Granollers who tried to fill the void with the Brazilian, Henrique Texeira. In October, the right back, Jose Guilherme Toledo, left the team to sign for Wisla Plock to play EHF Champions League. Alex Marquez came from FC Barcelona and the last player who joined Granollers is another Brazilian: Fernando Pacheco. This year is very special for Salva Puig who announced his retirement at the end of the season. Puig played most of his career in Granollers in three different stages (1996-2003, 2008-2011 and currently), Göppingen (2003-04), FC Barcelona (2004-07), BM. Valladolid (2007-08) and Toulouse (2011-13).

In the most thrilling of the three quarter-final pairings Granollers eliminated Bjerringbro-Silkeborg only on the away goal rule as both teams won their home matches by six goals.

EHF Cup Finals without the host club wouldn’t have had the same taste and, luckily, HBC Nantes managed to snatch a ticket for the finals right after the group phase, by finishing first of their group.

The story was not already written though, as the draw put three contenders to the trophy in the same group. Nantes was about to meet Frish Auf! Göppingen and Team Tvis Holstebro as well as newcomers OCI-Lions, after beating RK Nexe without fear in qualification round three.

If the first clash with the German club ended in a narrow defeat, the rest of the tests was a success, as Nantes rounded up the first stage with five victories, including some impressive ones at home against Göppingen and Holstebro.

Nantes’s campaign has been a success so far, both on and off the court. The team, who reached the EHF Cup final in 2013, finished second best defence and third best attack of all the group phase teams, even if key players like Nicolas Claire, Rock Feliho, Matias Schulz or Rodrigo Salinas were all injured at some point or another.

In the meantime, in the stands, two of the three best attendances were recorded at La Trocardiere. The reception of Göppingen, a key moment of the group phase, 4,421 spectators filled the arena, while more than 4,000 were also present two weeks later, for the send-off of OCI-Lions. A good sign that the EHF Cup Finals will be a popular event after the already rousing success of the event, which took place three seasons ago at the old Palais des Sports de Beaulieu.
