After an improbable 2009 playoff run that featured wins over the nation’s 14th-ranked team Curry College and the conference’s fourth-seeded Salve Regina University, Endicott College looks to once again reclaim its spot atop The Common-wealth Coast Conference standings in 2010. The Gulls, who will be led by third year head coach Bryan Haley, won 20 games last year for the first time since 2006, which was also the year the Blue and Green last captured the TCCC title.

Senior Colin McGinn (Tolland, Conn.) and Benjamin Petrides (Belchertown, Mass.) will anchor the Gulls’ starting rotation, as the No. 2 & 3 starters from a season ago will spearhead the effort on the hill. McGinn, a 2008 All-TCCC Honorable Mention recipient, went 6-4 in 14 appearances in 2009, tossing a team-high 59.2 innings while sur-rendering 37 earned runs and striking out 48 batters. McGinn also pitched a squad-leading five complete games a year ago. Petrides had the team’s third-lowest earned run average, post-ing a 4.32 ERA in 15 appearances (50 innings) in his rookie campaign.

A handful of arms will duel for the privilege of taking the ball from Haley as a starter, as senior Nick Kelley (Malden, Mass.), sophomore transfer Robbie Goldstick (Deerfield, Ill.), and a trio of freshmen in Brendan Pittsley (Plympton, Mass.), Mike Griffin (Arlington, Mass.), and Kevin Dupras (Belchertown, Mass.) will compete. Kelley, the only returnee of the group, went 2-2 last season, logging 34.1 innings in 10 appearances including six starts.

The backend of the rotation will feature senior Matt Sharon (Wall-ingford, Vt.) and sophomore Rich Yutkins (Billerica, Mass.), two steady contributors from last year’s staff. Sharon appeared in 18 games and struck out 24 batters in 23.1 innings of work. Yutkins, who logged only 8.1 innings in seven outings, posted

a 3.24 ERA without factoring into a decision. Coach Bryan Haley is excited about the potential of Yutkins serving as the team’s closer, as a new arm angle has been extremely successful for the sophomore in the preseason. The pair will be joined by junior Mike Drinkwater (Hamilton, Mass.) and four freshmen in Mike Silva (Saugus, Mass.), Tyler Borosavage (Medfield, Mass.), Tyler Hitchcock (Abington, Mass.), and Justin Forman (Water-town, Mass.).

TCCC Honorable Mention recipient Joe Klein (Monroe, Conn.) will be back behind the plate for the Blue and Green. Klein, who appeared in 37 games a season ago, batted .295 with five doubles and 17 RBI. The senior catcher also fields his position proficiently, as he had 161 outs and 29 assists, committing just six errors last season (.969). Senior Dan Greel (Rockport, Mass.) and sophomore Scott Worth (Londonderry, N.H.) will also vie for time.

Senior Drew Betts (Bristol, Conn.) will man first base while sophomore Robbie Valair (Norwood, Mass.) and senior Andrew Skelton (Sudbury, Mass.) will also work in some reps. Betts started all 42 games last season and hit .305 with 19 RBI. The sure-handed Betts slugged at a .348 clip last season with a .371 OBP and went 23-of-27 in stolen base attempts, all while fielding .990.

Freshman Eric Lemke (Southington, Conn.) will start at second base in his rookie campaign, while junior Chris Dominguez (Braintree, Mass.) will hold down the shortstop position. Dominguez hit .277 as a sophomore and was plunked by a team-high 11 pitches. The Endicott shortstop had 64 putouts and 91 assists in 2009.

Rookie Joe Kasabuski (Saugus, Mass.) and sophomore John Halsey (Reading, Mass.) will share time on the “hot corner.” Halsey, who ap-peared in 11 games with seven starts last year, posted a .286 batting aver-

age in just 21 plate appearances. Utility infielders Robbie Goldstick and Benjamin Petrides will also work their way into the mix.

In leftfield, Endicott returns sopho-more All-TCCC Honorable Mention Mike Russo (Natick, Mass.). As a rookie, Russo hit a team-best .397 in 22 conference games which included a .452 slugging and .443 on-base percentage. For the season, Russo had a team-high 48 hits and was second on the squad with 23 RBI. Russo was a big reason the Gulls qualified for the postseason in 2009, as the freshman batted .714 in the final week of the season, including six RBI in four games.

All-Conference member Aaron Santos (Cambridge, Mass.) will return to center-field after overcoming a foot injury. The speedy Endicott standout hit .325 with team-high’s in runs (42), doubles (9),

triples (5), homeruns (2), sacrifice flies (5) and walks (34). His slugging percentage of .524 and OBP of .474 were also tops on the team.

Bryant University transfer Colin Sitarz (West Hartford, Conn.) is penciled in to see action in the corner outfield, as will designated hitter Ralph Fidaleo (Fairfield, Conn.). Rob Valair will also get his fair share of at-bats at the DH position and spelling Russo in left.

A young and talented squad will once again open the season at the RussMatt Baseball Central Florida Invitational Tournament during the Gulls’ annual Spring Break trip.

Bryan Haley - Head CoachThe spring of 2010 will be Bryan Haley’s third season as head coach of the Endicott baseball team. Haley, who took over the program in February of 2008, is only the second coach in the 15-year history of the

Endicott baseball program. In Haley’s first two seasons as skipper of the Gulls, the team has seen steady improvement. In 2008, the Gulls’

baseball team improved its win total from 16 to 19 and finished in fifth place out of twelve teams in the TCCC standings. In 2009, the Endicott baseball team won 20 games and finished in a fourth place tie in the final league standings. In the first round of the conference play-offs, the Gull’s travelled to Newport, RI and downed Salve Regina 10-0. This victory was followed by a trip to Milton, MA to take on nationally ranked Curry College. The Gulls stunned the Colonels with a 2-0 victory and advanced to the bracket finals in which they were eliminated, ending their play-off run. The team wrapped up the season by defeating, regional participant, Suffolk University 8-5, to finish the season at 20-22.

Coach Haley is very optimistic as the Gulls prepare for the start of the 2010 season. “We have a great balance of upperclassmen leadership and young talent both in the field and on the mound. We are all looking forward to the spring season and expect to compete for a confer-ence title in May. Our team is working hard to restore the tradition of excellence to the baseball program here at Endicott.”

Before arriving in Beverly, Haley spent six seasons as the top assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Columbia University. In his final season with the Lions, Haley’s first recruiting class, as seniors, led Columbia to their first Ivy League title in 32 years. Haley developed six All-Ivy pitchers while at Columbia and two of his Lions’ pitchers were signed to professional contracts.

Prior to his time at Columbia, Haley spent two seasons as the pitching coach at Brandeis University and one year as a pitcher/coach with the Ryde Eastwood Hawks in Sydney, Australia.

While at Brandeis, Haley coached a pitching staff that ranked 16th in the nation with a 3.41 ERA and earned an NCAA New England Region-al Tournament bid. Three of Haley’s pitchers at Brandeis went on to sign professional contracts. In Australia, Bryan pitched the Hawks to a club championship, going 14-4 with a league leading 150 strikeouts and a 2.54 ERA on the mound. One of Haley’s pitchers with the Hawks, Richard Thompson, was signed by the Los Angles Angels of Anaheim and pitched on the silver medal winning Australian Olympic team in 2004. Thompson made his Major League debut with the Angels in 2007.

Haley is a 1999 graduate of Brandeis University, holding a Bachelor of Arts degree in American Studies. Bryan was a member of the most successful four-year span in Brandeis baseball history in which he was a four-time letter winner, a 1998 All-New England honoree and a first team all conference and Athletic Director Outstanding Male Athlete award winner in his senior campaign. Over the course of his career, the Judges posted a 111-47-1 record and made their first Division III College World Series appearance in 22 years.

Coach Haley currently resides in Peabody, Mass. with his wife Jennifer and two children, Brayden and Madelyn.
