The 2010 University of Mobile baseballteam will have a largely new look headinginto the season opener Friday, Jan. 29 atBelhaven College, but that is nothingnew for the Rams.

"We recruit a lot of junior college playerswhich means we have a lot of turnover,"UM Head Coach Mike Jacobs said. "Twoyears ago, we had pretty much a wholenew lineup, but ended up with probablythe second best season in school history, and last year we had to deal with a wholenew pitching staff. This year will be a bitof both."

Dustin Lee and Alan Butts will return toanchor the pitching staff, along withnewcomers Jarrin Brister, CameronWhite, John Ladnier, Jeff Lyons, MichaelClay, Eric Meeks and Chris Peacock.

"We really need our returning guys tostep up big," Jacobs said. "But, it's nicethat most of our newcomers are jucoproducts and already have collegiateexperience."

Lee did not start pitching until the lasthalf of last season, but he put up asparkling 1.29 ERA in 21 relief innings.Butts logged 40.1 innings as a starter andreliever.

Ladnier went 6-2 with a sub-3.0 ERAlast season, Clay fanned 39 in 48.2innings of work and Lyons picked up 3saves and 3 wins for Faulkner State.Peacock limited opponents to a .213 bat-ting average in 40.2 innings, while Whiteput up a 6-2 record while splitting timebetween the mound and the field forHolmes Community College. Brister hashad a great fall for the Rams and Meeksis a sidearm relief pitcher from BishopState.

"We like the arms we brought in, but itmight take some time to get everyone inthe roles that will fit best," Jacobs said.

The 2008 and 2009 lineups were among

the best ever at Mobile, placing in thetop three all-time in homeruns and runsscored at the school. This year, seniorsNick Laico and Brad Sheffield are theonly returning players who received significant at bats.

"Obviously, when you lose so many greathitters, including a pair of All-Americansin Carlos Romero and Kevin Orso, youare going to have some uncertainty,"Jacobs said. "But, we like our returningplayers and our new guys and feel thatthey can make their own mark."

Sheffield will be expected to anchor thelineup after hitting .388 with 16 extrabase hits and a .461 on base percentage.Laico logged 84 at bats between catcherand DH, batting .310. Travis Williamsonis a senior that will split time behind theplate and the outfield.

Joining Sheffield on the infield will beJustin Beck, Ben Negus, Eric Perez,Cody Sanderson and Brady King.Sanderson brings some much-neededpower to the lineup after slugging .797with 12 homers at Jefferson Davis, whileNegus hit .302 at Jefferson Davis. Perez,Beck and King are versatile freshmanthat the coaches are excited about.

"Our infield has a great deal of depth,"Jacobs said. "Sheffield will start at 1stbase and Sanderson will start at short.Bourgeois has had a good fall and willadd depth in the middle if his armcomes around. Second base will havetwo freshmen see time in Beck and King, while Negus, White and Lee are allshowing the ability to see action at 3rdbase. The only clear-cut starters areSheffield and Sanderson."

Joining Laico behind the plate isWilliamson. Williamson caught in juniorcollege in 2008, while Michael Tedesco isexpected to be ready sometime inFebruary after shoulder surgery in thesummer.

The outfield will likely see some combi-nation of Cody Barber, Jake Halverson,Hunter Norris, Eric Perez and TravisWilliamson.

Barber, brother of former Ram BrettBarber, will be looked upon to be a keyrun-producer after hitting .358 with 56runs at Faulkner State. Norris hit .326 atJefferson Davis. Halverson is a transferfrom Dana College where he hit .307 in137 at bats.

"We don't have three clear-cut starters inthe outfield, but have several guys thatwe feel will help us there," Jacobs said."It's up to them to settle playing timewith their on-field performance."

Team Captains Sheffield and Lee willlook to have the team ready quickly, asthe Rams jump right into Gulf CoastAthletic Conference action with three-game series versus Belhaven and Loyolato start the year. Spring Hill, WilliamCarey, Tougaloo and LSU-Shreveportround out the conference foes.

"The GCAC will be as tough as alwayswith William Carey and LSU-Shreveportranked and Belhaven on the cusp ofbeing ranked," Jacobs said. "And youcan't overlook anyone, as conferencegames always seem to bring out every-one's best."

Non-conference play will keep the teamtested throughout the season with home-and-away matchups versus SSAC mem-bers Auburn-Montgomery and Faulknerand teams such as West Florida,Oklahoma Wesleyan and LambuthUniversity.

"We like to have a solid non-conferenceschedule to keep us battle-testedthroughout the year, and this year will beas tough as any, as we will have to showup for every game," Jacobs said.

The Gulf Coast AthleticConference developed out ofa series of meetings held overa period of almost four years.A number of private four-year schools in the GulfCoast region with similar educational standards, enrollments, budgets, and athletic philosophies mutuallyfelt the need for a conference.

In April and May, 1981, a constitution was developed, officerswere elected and the decision was made to proceed with conference competition during the 1981-82 school year. Charterofficers were Anthony M. Rachal, Jr., Xavier University, president;John Burton, Spring Hill College, vice president; Mark Windham,Belhaven College, secretary-treasurer; and Thomas Howell,Louisiana College, commissioner. Charter members wereBelhaven College of Jackson, Mississippi; Dillard University andXavier University of New Orleans, Louisiana; Louisiana Collegeof Pineville, Louisiana; Spring Hill College of Mobile, Alabama;Tougaloo College of Tougaloo, Mississippi; and William CareyCollege of Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

In August, 1981, the GCAC received recognition as anNAIA-affiliated conference. The University of Mobile was admitted in October, 1985; Southern University in New Orleanswas granted admission in May, 1986; Loyola University wasadmitted in April, 1995; and Talladega College was admitted inApril, 1999. In May 2000, Louisiana College and BelhavenCollege withdrew while Louisiana State University - Shreveportbecame a member in August, 2000. Belhaven College rejoined theGCAC in 2002.

The purpose of the conference is to regulate and promote allrecognized activities of intercollegiate athletics sponsored bymember institutions through the maintenance of high standardsof honor, integrity, and fair play. All member institutions agree topursue the highest standards of ethical conduct and personalintegrity in all aspects of intercollegiate athletics.

The University of Mobile baseball teamentered the 2009 season with high expectations coming off a 43-win seasonand Gulf Coast Athletic ConferenceChampionship in 2008. The Ramsreturned a potent lineup, but lost keycontributors from the pitching staff.

"Baseball usually boils down to pitchingand defense," Head Coach Mike Jacobssaid. "We had a great offense, but losttoo much pitching to take that next stepwe were hoping to take."

The Rams went 34-23, and the newpitching staff struggled early. The Ramslost all three games in the opening week-end against LSUS, and that sweep sentthe Rams into an early-season spiral thathad the team sitting at 9-11 overall and6-8 in GCAC play on Feb. 27.

"That opening series was a wake-up call, and told us this season would not beeasy," Jacobs said. "Just because you areone of the conference favorites cominginto the year, doesn't mean the otherschools will roll over for you, and it tookawhile for our guys to get rolling."

Mobile started to turn things aroundwith a 12-4 win against Belhaven to prevent a three-game sweep on Feb. 28.From there, until April 4, the Rams went17-5 to improve their record to 26-16.The run was bookended by a pair offive-game win streaks. The offense cameto life in that stretch, scoring seven runsor more in 17 contests, including double-figures in 10 games. The pitching staffalso started to come to life, holdingopponents below four runs in nine ofthose games.

"The season was starting to get awayfrom us, but our guys responded and gotus back in the running for a conferencetitle," Jacobs said.

The Rams played just-above .500 at 6-5the rest of the regular season, and

entered the GCAC Tournament with a32-21 overall record and a 19-15 confer-ence mark.

The double-elimination tournamentopened with a loss to Belhaven College. The game forced the Rams to use fourpitchers and put the team one game awayfrom elimination.

"It was disappointing to bounce backfrom the early-season struggles, only tohave the same thing happen in the postseason," Jacobs said. "But, we didn'tpanic and just took things one game at atime from there."

UM rebounded with a 9-6 win overWilliam Carey and an 8-5 victory overrival Spring Hill College. That set up atitle contest with Belhaven College. TheBlazers would need only one victory towin it all, while Mobile would have tobeat Belhaven twice for the championship.

Working on three days rest, NelsonCurry limited the Blazers to one run ontwo hits in six innings of work, thatallowed the Rams to build a 2-1 leadheading into the final inning. Ace relieverDustin Lee came on to close out the

game, but the Blazers tallied the winningrun when Craig Westcott won a 10-pitchbattle by delivering a walk-off RBIdouble just-over the head of CarlosRomero in centerfield.

"I was proud of the way our guys battledback after the tough opening game,"Jacobs said. "We were right there in it,but just fell short, and I hate that for ourseniors."

For their efforts, Kevin Orso was nameda First-Team NAIA All-American, andRomero was named an HonorableMention All-American. Orso hit .357with 17 doubles, 15 homers and 59 RBI.Romero finished with a .374 average, 66runs scored, 14 doubles, 4 triples and 15homers for the Rams.

Those 15 homers tied Romero and Orsowith Josh Kendrick for Mobile's single-season homerun record. They also finished their careers No. 1 and 2 inhomers, with Romero hitting 36 andOrso hitting 27. Jared Baria finished asthe career hits leader with 275, followedby Romero with 253. Romero is also thecareer RBI leader with 193.

Carlos Romero became the Rams’ all-time leader inhomers, runs and RBI in 2009.

Kevin Orso was named 1st-Team NAIA All-Americanin 2009.
