After over a decade of NAIA coaching, Madonna Head Coach Greg Haeger con-tinues to define Crusader Baseball. His brilliant mind for the game and focus onthe development of student-athletes continues to establish Madonna Universityas one of the most elite collegiate baseball programs in the country and onethat consistently vies for conference and national titles each year.

Haeger, 40, enters his 14th year as Crusader head coach amidst a string ofaccomplishments that have undoubtedly been a direct reflection of his coach-ing style. The 2009 edition of the Crusaders made program history last season, becoming the first ever Madonna University baseball team to advance to theNAIA National Tournament. The '09 squad also earned the program its highestever national ranking, peaking at No. 8 in the coaches' poll on April 7.

The Crusaders set the school record for winning percentage (.765) en route towinning the program's fourth Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference title in thelast five seasons by posting a 39-12 overall record, and earned Haeger his fourthWHAC Coach of the Year honor in the same time frame.

He has now coached three conference Players of the Year in Kevin Zerbo (2008),Ben Ramsey (2006) and Joe Greene (2005); along with a trio of ConferencePitchers of the Year in Jeff Sonnenberg (2009), Will Kennedy (2008) and DerekDufrane (2005); and has had three players in the last five years (Ramsey in 2006and Dufrane in 2005 and John McCracken in 2008) earn NAIA All-America hon-ors with first, second and honorable mention team selections, respectively.

Personally Haeger has been honored as the WHAC Coach of the Year four times(2005, '06, '08, '09), NAIA Region Coach of the Year three times (2005, '06, 09) andNAIA Great Lakes Section Coach of the Year once (1998).

Haeger is the architect behind one of the nation's top pitching staffs as theCrusader arms carried the team to their third straight 30-win season in 2009 andtheir sixth straight post season appearance. The Crusader hurlers posted aleague best 4.26 earned run average and allowed opponents to hit at just a .278clip. Madonna led the WHAC in complete games with 20, and the staff's earnedrun average ranked it 23rd nationally.

Since taking over for Mike George on June 24, 1996, after a pair of seasons asGeorge's pitching coach, Haeger has led the Crusaders to a 387-294-5 overallrecord. In recent years his teams have been a constant contender in theWolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference and have gained national attention withtheir top-25 rankings.

The longest tenured coach in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference entersthe 2010 season ready for the challenges that await his ball club. No longer dothe Crusaders have the luxury of sneaking up on opponents as they have inrecent years. After a 2005 season that saw the team start the year with a pair ofwins at No. 7 ranked Spalding University and go undefeated (11-0) on the springtrip to Florida, coupled with 2006's near berth in the World Series and last sea-son's upset of No. 13-ranked Fresno Pacific in the National Tournament, the wordis now out that Madonna is a force to be reckoned with nationally.

Adding to the buzz surrounding the past six seasons was the inaugural game atwhat is now Ilitch Ballpark on March 27, 2004. Formerly known as MadonnaUniversity Ballpark, the new $1 million home of Madonna baseball features amajor league playing surface, full infield and outfield drainage, major league-sized dugouts and most importantly, an on-campus home for the team. InOctober 2005, a generous contribution from Detroit Tigers and Red Wings own-

ers and Little Caesar's Pizza founders, Mike and Marian Ilitch, led to the unveilingof the field's major league-sized scoreboard bearing the new name beyond theleft field fence.

"That was a special day for our program and one that I will always look backupon with fond memories," stated Haeger. "The University and AthleticDepartment really made it a special day with all the fanfare, first pitch, nationalanthem, you name it...it was great for our kids."

On the field, Haeger places a strong emphasis on teaching the game of baseball.Whether working as a team or through individual instruction, he has constantlyworked to improve fundamentals. In addition, he preaches an aggressive styleof play, as the Crusaders' stolen base numbers demonstrate. His work with theMadonna pitching staff is undeniably a major reason for the team's success inrecent years. Last season alone, MU pitchers led the conference in numerous sta-tistical categories and were among the nation's leaders in ERA and strikeouts.

After an outstanding high school career at Detroit Catholic Central, Haeger wasnamed Michigan Amateur Player of the Year, and was drafted by the DetroitTigers following his senior season. Haeger put his professional dreams on holdto accept a baseball scholarship and pursue his education at the University ofMichigan. Haeger enjoyed a tremendous career at Michigan, earning All- Big TenConference honors in both 1998 and 1989. He led the Wolverines with eightgame winning RBIs as a sophomore when he batted .292 with five home runs.He tied for third on the team with 38 RBIs as a sophomore. A career .290 hitter,Haeger spent the majority of his time as a first baseman for the Maize and Blue.

In 1990, Haeger was again drafted by the Tigers and opted to turn pro followinghis junior season. While with the Tigers, Haeger moved up through the farm sys-tem, earning All-Star honors in 1991 and playing on the Florida State LeagueChampion Lakeland Tigers in 1992. Unfortunately, a knee injury ended his pro-fessional career. Following the injury, Haeger returned to Michigan to continuehis education in 1994. He later joined the Madonna staff as an assistant. Hisimpact on the pitching staff was immediately noticeable as the team's ERA fin-ished in the top 15 of the NAIA in two of his three seasons as pitching coach. Inaddition, he was part of Madonna's first sectional championship team in 1995.

In addition to his duties in the dugout, Haeger is responsible for maintenanceand upkeep of Ilitch Ballpark as well as University Field and assists the AthleticDepartment with game management duties at MU sporting events.

Off the field, Haeger and his wife Jean reside in New Hudson with their sonsGregory III [Trey] and Evan.

THE WOLVERINE-HOOSIER ATHLETIC CONFERENCEThe Wolverine Hoosier Athletic

Conference was formed in 1992 out of the oldNAIA District 23. As then ConferenceCommissioner, and former Concordia AthleticDirector, Dr. T. Alan Twietmeyer recalls, shiftingnational allegiances and new NAIA playoffguidelines were cause for action.

"...Northwood, Hillsdale, and SVSU wereabout to, or had just, gone NCAA II and withsome new rules and strategies on the horizonwe needed to form a conference for playoffmatters, political clout, etc. The ramrod ofthese early meetings was Glen Donahue ofOrchard Lake St. Mary's. We must have met sixor eight times with very little progress. A majorhurdle was that OLSM only had men's basket-ball. As the NAIA established affiliated confer-ences it mandated a conference size (at leastsix schools) and each school was to have atleast six sports. It is ironic that the impetus forthe conference came from an institution thatis not in the league. About this time ButchPerchan, former AD at Tri-State University, gotinvolved and was interested in joining. Hepulled TSU out of their district and joined theWHAC. Butch was the first WHAC Presidentand did much to set up the conference, estab-lish fees, move paperwork, etc."

The Conference's six charter memberswere, Aquinas College, Concordia College,Cornerstone University, Siena HeightsUniversity, Spring Arbor College, and Tri-StateUniversity.

Madonna University joined the confer-ence in 1997, with Indiana Institute ofTechnology joining a year later in 1998. Morechange came to the conference at the conclu-sion of the 2003 year when Tri-State left theWHAC to apply for NCAA status. The confer-ence also lost Spring Arbor following the 2004campaign as the Cougars joined the MCC.

The WHAC Executive Council voted inUniversity of Michigan Dearborn as a mem-ber on July 1, 2004 to replace Spring Arbor, again giving the WHAC seven teams. The con-ference regained its eighth member in 2005when Davenport University joined Dearbornas an associate member in the sports of men'sand women's basketball and men's andwomen’s soccer and golf. The Panthers addedbaseball and softball for the 2009 season.

The WHACwill add a new member for the2010-11 season when the University ofNorthwestern Ohio joins to make the leaguenine teams strong.

In its 18 years the WHAC has becomewell respected not only regionally, but nation-ally. Conference schools have securedNational Championships in several sports, both in the NAIA and the NCCAA. TheWolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference hascome a long way since its inception, and welook forward to even greater heights of bothacademic and athletic excellence!

The Wolverine-Hoosier AthleticConference offices are located on the campusof Cornerstone University in Grand Rapids,Michigan, situated in the back yard of threeconference schools.

SR. ROSE MARIE KUJAWA - UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT

The Board of Trustees at Madonna University appointed Sister RoseMarieKujawa, a ‘66 graduate and mathematics major of Madonna University, to theposition of president of Madonna University, effective July 1, 2001. Sister RoseMarie also completed graduate work at Drew University and the University ofGeorgia, and holds master’s and doctoral degrees from Wayne StateUniversity.A native of Detroit and a member of St. John Cantius parish, SisterRoseMarie is the daughter of Anna and Francis Kujawa. After graduating fromFelician Academy in 1960, she entered the Felician Sisters in Livonia and begancollege studies at Madonna. She pronounced perpetual vows in 1968. Her ear-liest ministries included teaching at St. Valentine school (Redford Township),Bishop Borgess High School, and Ladywood High School where she also servedas assistant principal.

To prepare her for the presidency of Madonna University, Sister Rose Mariebrings a host of experiences associated with her 20-year plus tenure atMadonna University. During her first appointment in Madonna’s mathematicsdepartment in 1975, Sister Rose Marie organized and taught the first computercourses offered at Madonna. This was followed by responsibilities in the Collegeplanning and development office. Appointed academic dean in 1979, SisterRose Marie organized the first graduate program in 1982, a joint venture of thenursing and business departments. Approval by the regional accrediting bodyprepared the way for the export of Madonna’s graduate program to Taiwan, astep which confirmed the University’s direction in international studies.

During Sister Rose Marie’s 17-year term as academic vice president, the sab-batical policy was developed and implemented, the faculty teaching load wasbrought in line with national standards, and the size of the faculty and the per-centage of faculty members holding doctorates doubled.

Concurrently, departments and programs were encouraged to seek profes-sional accreditation and approvals. In addition to nursing and education which

were already accredited by their respective organizations, social work, dietetics, and the legal assistant program sought and received the coveted approvals.New undergraduate programs were also introduced: applied science, biochem-istry, computer science, hospice education, hospitality management, interna-tional studies, Japanese, long-term care administration, merchandising man-agement, church music, music management, pastoral ministry, professionaland technical writing, psychology, and television and video communications.“Madonna Magazine,” a regionally syndicated public service program, became apermanent fixture in Madonna’s long list of opportunities for students toenhance their understanding of the world and to improve it through an everwidening circle of communications. “Writing across the Curriculum” was estab-lished as a norm at Madonna as was a computer course requirement for everystudent graduating from the University.

Sister Rose Marie claims the highlight of her academic career was the transi-tion of Madonna College to Madonna University. As chairperson of the“University Study” committee, Sister Rose Marie compared the academic quali-ty and support structures of Madonna with thirteen other private universitiesand discovered that Madonna compared favorably with all of them. The region-al accrediting body and the State of Michigan department of education agreed, thus ushering in Madonna University in 1991.

Besides her work at Madonna, Sister Rose Marie has served on the boards ofSt. Mary Mercy Hospital, St. Joseph Home (Jackson), SS. Cyril and MethodiusSeminary, the Orchard Lake Schools, Angela Hospice (advisory), MarywoodNursing Care Center and Marybrook Manor, and Maryville Center (Holly). Shewas elected to the leadership team of the Felician Sisters of the Livonia province(1994 - 2000) where she served as Provincial Secretary and coordinated themajor meeting (chapter) of the province in 1999.

Her travels have included fifteen trips abroad and visits to 23 countries.Outgrowths of these international meetings reaped several benefits forMadonna University: a professor from the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, anexchange program with Nagoya Gakuin University in Tokyo, as well as an ongo-ing relationship with Edgehill College near Manchester, England which provid-ed internships for nursing and teacher education students.

Personal Message Madonna University was founded to prepare students like you for a full life.
