Letter F R O M T H E E D I T O R

Meadow Pointe residents, May is generally a busy time for most families: school projects need to be finished, summer camp and swim class dates need to be confirmed, and summer vacation dates need to be booked!

Since May happens to be “National Barbecue Month” it’s a good time to get your gas grills cleaned and refueled for backyard parties. One such occasion is Cinco de Mayo (the 5th of May), a day we celebrate Mexican heritage and delicious Mexican food and drinks. (There are recipes inside for you to try.)

Of course, don’t forget to give your Mom EXTRA attention on Sunday, May 12th. She will appreciate a much-needed break from her busy to-do list, and some extra hugs and kisses! (Why not make a list of all the reasons you APPRECIATE her?)

May brings us Memorial Day which occurs on Monday, May 27th. Memorial Day is a day of

remembering the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Formerly known as Decoration Day, it originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in that war. By the 20th century Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who have died in all wars. (Please see the article about our local Amputee Veterans of America Support Team and how you can donate or volunteer to assist their worthy cause.)

And finally, May is “National Photograph Month”. What better time to gather together your kids, friends, and family pets for photos? Or perhaps capture lovely nature photos? Please send them in to your community magazine cover contest! (A high resolution of 300 is required for the cover).

We always look forward to your articles, photos and input,

The Joint Use Agreement ( JUA) with MP4 is set to automatically renew in October of this year unless we act, and so it is time to decide whether JUAs are in the best interest of MP1 residents. The Board of Supervisors (BOS) has been in deliberations on this issue for the last month, and on April 4th, we heard from several residents who came to our Board meeting to voice their opinions. Other residents came to previous meetings, and often we hear from residents who come to the office. It seems everyone has an opinion on Joint Use! We want to hear from you ([email protected]).

There are valid points on both sides of the issue. Those in favor of extending the JUA with all the Meadow Pointe communities enjoy and value the flexibility and variety of using all the amenities in the other communities. Those

who are wary of extending the JUA feel that it is not an equal arrangement, and opening our amenities to other CDDs may place a burden on our own residents, both in availability of facilities, and in assessments.

The Meadow Pointe CDD Board of Supervisors realizes this is an important issue. For now, we have decided to reach out to MP4 and offer to extend the JUA for a period of one year. If MP4 is amenable to this, we will ask them to gather data on how many MP1 residents use their facilities, and MP1 will continue to do the same. We want to be welcoming, and we want to be fair. Ultimately, the responsibility of the BOS is to the residents of MP1, and our goal is to represent their wishes and to be good stewards of both their tax dollars and the facilities purchased with them.

March 30th was a beautiful day to ride a pony, climb a rock wall, pet an animal or 2, or just wander among the many vendors. Costumed characters were out looking to have their pictures taken, and the grill was sizzling with delicious treats. Special thanks go to Dennis

Costa and Keith Fisk along with their staff of volunteers and workers for putting together another wonderful event for the community. More pictures can be found on our website at www.meadowpointecdd.com.

(Woods) Please remember to protect our conservation/wetlands! Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) will place fines on the CDD if there is any disturbance to conservation/wetlands. This includes walking through, playing, clearing, planting, building forts or structures, etc. Parents, please remind your children about this issue.

check storm drains during Heavy rains

Because street storm drains carry rain into our pond system, it is vital that these drains remain clear. Mulch, sticks, and other things may wash into the streets during heavy rains and cause the openings of the storm drains to clog. If clogs are not removed, water will back up onto the street surface very quickly and then into yards. Residents need to check storm drain openings on their streets during heavy rains and remove any clogs.

• Raise the lawn mower blade to at least 3 inches or the highest level. A high cut encourages grass roots to grow deeper, shade the root system and holds soil moisture better than a closely clipped lawn.

• Plant mature and/or drought tolerant grasses, ground covers, shrubs and trees. Once established, they do not need water as frequently and usually will survive dry periods without water.

• Water wisely. Ornamental plant and fruit trees need only 1 inch of water per week. Adjust for rain—don’t overwater and conserve water!

Nothing is more frustrating than finding the perfect cu-cumber or head of lettuce at

the farmers market, paying top-dollar for it, and then... tossing it out a week later when it has gone moldy or slimy in the refrigerator.

No doubt one reason so many of us eat too many convenience foods and too few fruits and vegetables is that it can be hard to get our busy schedules in sync with the produce we bring home with the best of intentions.

Food scientists, however, have dis-covered a remarkably effective way to extend the life of fresh-cut fruits and vegetables by days or even a week. It doesn’t involve the chlorine solutions, irradiation or peroxide baths some-times used by produce packagers.

And it’s easily done in any home by anyone. This method, called heat-shocking, is 100 per cent organic and uses just one ingredient that every cook has handy — hot water.

You may already be familiar with a related technique called blanching, a cooking method in which food is briefly dunked in boiling or very hot water. Blanching can extend the shelf life of broccoli and other plant foods, and it effectively reduces contamina-tion by germs on the surface of the food. But blanching usually ruptures the cell walls of plants, causing color and nutrients to leach out. It also robs delicate produce of its raw taste.

Heat-shocking works differently. When the water is warm but not scalding — temperatures ranging

from 105 F to 140 F work well for most fruits and vegetables — a brief plunge won’t rupture the cells. Rather, the right amount of heat alters the biochemistry of the tissue in ways that, for many kinds of produce, firm the flesh, delay browning and fading, slow wilting, and increase mold resistance.

A long list of scientific studies published during the past 15 years report success using heat-shocking to firm potatoes, tomatoes, carrots, and strawberries; to preserve the color of asparagus, broccoli, green beans, kiwi fruits, celery, and lettuce; to fend off overripe flavors in cantaloupe and other melons; and to generally add to the longevity of grapes, plums, bean sprouts and peaches, among others.

The optimum time and tempera-ture combination for the quick dip seems to depend on many factors, but the procedure is quite simple. Just let the water run from your tap until it gets hot, then fill a large pot of water about two-thirds full, and use a thermometer to measure the temperature. It will probably be between 105 F and 140 F; if not, a few minutes on the stove should do the trick. Submerge the pro-duce and hold it there for several minutes (the hotter the water, the less time is needed), then drain, dry and refrigerate as you normally would.

The bottom line is that soaking your produce in hot water for a few minutes makes it cheaper and more nutritious because more fruits and veggies will end up in your family rather than in the trash.

Heat-shocking Guidelines

The optimal time and temperature for heat-shocking fruits and veg-etables varies. Use these as general guidelines.

Asparagus: 2 to 3 minutes at 131 F

Broccoli: 7 to 8 minutes at 117 F

Celery: 90 seconds at 122 F

Grapes: 8 minutes at 113 F

Kiwi fruit: 15 to 20 minutes at 104 F

Lettuce: 1 to 2 minutes at 122 F

Oranges (whole): 40 to 45 min-utes at 113 F

Peaches (whole): 40 minutes at 104 F. v

My name is Gabrielle Barnes and I am an honor roll student in

the eighth grade pursuing my dream of becoming a profes-sional dancer and choreographer. I began my career at New Tampa Dance Theatre at the age of 4. I have performed in Dance Theatre of Tampa’s annual sum-

mer concert series as well as New Tampa Dance

Theatre’s annual Spring Production.

I had the opportunity to per-form with the Ballet Flem-ing and Gaspar Master Class. I’ve also performed

numerous roles in DTT’s annual production of the “Nutcracker”.

In previous seasons I’ve performed as Mouse, Sheep, Lead Battle Doll, Demi Angel, Polichinelle, Snow Flurry, Snow Flake, Party Child, Flower, and Lead Chinese. In this most recent season I was featured in and performed the roles of Clara and Lead Russian in the “Nutcracker”.

I recently attended my first summer intensive audition and to my amazement was accepted into the summer intensive program at the very prestigious American Ballet Theatre (ABT) in New York. “One of ABT’s main missions is to ensure that the traditions of dance and movement are sustained and carried on through exposure

and celebration, education and training.”

I am currently seeking sponsorship or donations to help me with the cost of tuition ($2,750), housing and boarding expenses ($1,735). Any amount you can contribute will be greatly appreciated because this will allow me to continue pursuit of my passion in the art of dance. I am so excited for what the future holds for me.

Thank you in advance for your support. If you have any questions or need any additional information, please contact us at (813) 994-9009. v

When you walk the hallway at New Tampa Christian Academy,

you may hear the days of the week sung to a snappy beat, number chants in English and in Spanish, or a chorus of little voices singing Thank You God for Making Me. A peek inside the busy classrooms will reveal two-year- olds creating play dough shapes, three-year-olds

identifying and using the alphabet, and four-year-olds applying their number skills to counting, grouping, and totaling.

New Tampa Christian Acad-emy, located across the street from Walmart in the Tampa Bay Presbyterian Church, has been giving children, ages 2, 3, and 4, an outstanding academic and spiritual

foundation for life and learning for the past 17 years. Director Cheryl Barber identifies several distin-guishing characteristics of NTCA. Together, our staff has over 75 years of teaching experience and several individuals with masters’ degrees. Most teachers have been at the school for at least 5 years, and all demonstrate their love for children and ability to provide an engaging and challenging learning environ-ment. The program includes a music component known to parents by the productions presented twice annually in the church sanctuary, and by the active songs that become part of every child’s experience and preschool memories. NTCA’s commitment to the individual child is seen in the school’s regular maintenance of a much lower than required student-teacher ratio. The two teachers in each classroom work as a team, encouraging children to progress individually, give expression to their ideas, and develop social skills. NTCA, a decidedly Chris-tian school, serves a culturally- and religiously-diverse population with

warmth and grace. Ms. Barber says, “We teach children about the God of the Bible, His wonderful creative acts, and His redeeming love. This teaching is foundational to every subject taught and provides the context in which the truth about all things is explored”.

NTCA is currently enrolling stu-dents for the school year beginning in August of 2013. The morning preschool offers two or three day per week programs. The reasonable tuition prices range from $175.00 per month to $285.00 per month. The private pre-K-4 program at NTCA maintains a low student-teacher ratio, gives emphasis to the Christian teaching described above, and exceeds the academic standards for kindergarten preparation. For more information, or to schedule a tour, call us at 813-973-2443, or visit our web site at www.newtam-pachristianacademy.org. You can reserve a place for your two, three, or four-year-old by contacting us today! v

organization is a statement of the dedication of the officers, advisory council and members. The AVAST amputee color guard was started in 2012. “Our purpose was to raise awareness, hope and inspiration for wounded veterans and amputees. We wanted to show the people of the community and the nation that even though you’re an amputee, you can still come back and be a productive part of society,” says Rudy Salas, president of AVAST, and Meadow Pointe resident. “A lot of wounded vet-erans returning home don’t know that. The color guard is only part of what our organization does.” The first Wednesday of every month, AVAST members gather at Terrace Hill Golf Club along with patients from the James Haley Veterans Memorial Hospital. They work to develop adaptive golfing skills and help coach the veterans in the game’s rules and etiquette. Each day out on the golf course is a gift to all who participate.

“There are so many people responsible for our growth throughout the year; I cannot thank all of them,” adds Rudy. “To all the organizations who invited us to golf tournaments, I say thank you and keep those invitations coming!”

There are a variety of ways that you can participate, help or donate. Cash or donations by check or money orders are always beneficial to assist with transportation, fees and expenses related to the out-reach of our members. t he Meadow Pointe II CDD received a copy of a letter that was sent to the Pasco Chief Assistant County

Attorney from Business owners at Cross Creek, some 40 business and employees signed a petition to urge the County to open Mansfield/Kinnan Road.

As we previously reported “After ongoing discussions between the parties, the City and the Developer may be revisiting the existing zoning and the terms of the agreement given the change or conditions and the needs within the New Tampa area. So at this time, neither the City nor the Developer is in a position to be responsive to the Pasco Requirements, as outlined”.

Email discussions with The Pasco Chief As-sistant County Attorney and County En-gineers have indicated there are no plans to move forward at this time with the opening of Mansfield and Kinnan. Does this mean that it’s a DEAD ISSUE? The answer is a resounding NO!

Thanks to everyone who has been voicing their opinion on the issue, both pro and con. Keep the emails coming. Your input to your community is important to all of us.

We Want Your opinion!

We are consider-ing a slight change to the hours we are

open at the clubhouse. This would affect club-

h o u s e use, room rentals, the sports courts, and the fitness center. We cur-rently close at 10 pm. The proposed change, with a target date of June 1st, would have the clubhouse and facilities close at 9 pm.

We did an analysis of usage based on ID card gate swipes and it was determined that less than 1% of the facility usage oc-curs between the hours of 9 and 10 pm. It seems this would adversely affect very few people with a pretty significant cost

savings. The hour change will easily save the CDD budget at least $7,500 annually based on staffing and lighting costs be-ing reduced by 365 hours per year.

Obviously most residents would love to keep CDD fees as low as possible, but we also want the facilities to be available if there is a desire. So we encourage ev-ery resident to give this some thought, and let us know how you feel about the proposed change. Should we keep the clubhouse and facilities open as they are, or close at 9 and be more cost effective? Email us at [email protected], call us at 991-5016 or stop by in person!!

GFWC Pasco Junior Woman’s Club Pinwheels for Prevention initiative has

begun. Pinwheels can be seen from the west bound lane on Highway 56 in Wesley Chapel. On Saturday April 6th the pinwheels will cross Interstate 75 and continue in the west bound lane.

“There have been some ups and downs with this project,” said Patricia Murphy project chairman “we placed 400 pinwheels on Easter Sunday and on Wednesday half of them were gone. We had our permit number on our sign as required so I assume they were stolen.” However, Murphy won’t let a little thing like stolen pinwheels slow her down. “Fortunately the pinwheels in front

of Mini Wesley Chapel are intact and spinning. The team at Mini has been great and they have an excellent security system so we are hoping they caught the culprit on tape.”

Meanwhile, Murphy has contacted JD Porter, JR Sierra and Jim Quinlan to request permission to plant the pinwheels on their property inside the fence. “The Porter family is amazing and has a long history of philan-thropy,” said Murphy, “so I hope this project appeals to them and they grant permission to plant on Wiregrass Ranch.”

According to a 2011 report from the Florida Department of Children and Families, Pasco County had 7,434

reports of child abuse. A result of those 7,434 reports 844 children were removed from their homes and placed in the Florida foster care system.

“The mission of Pasco Juniors is to empower women and enrich the lives of Pasco’s children. We believe this initiative is paramount to reaching our goal to decrease the number of children abused in Pasco County,” said Murphy, “and it is our hope

that we can work together with the community to bring this goal to fruition.”

If you would like to participate please visit the website at GFWCPascoJu-niors.wix.com/Welcome for more information on the project or to vol-unteer. You can also attend a meeting on the first Tuesday of every month at 6:30pm at Seven Oaks Country Club in Wesley Chapel. v

Wesley Chapel Home sales

Data doesn’t lie; this is a good time to put your home on the market. Every market has a “sweet spot”. For real estate that sweet spot is when the number of homes for sale is low and interest rates are too.So what has turned the market around in Wesley Chapel?

Investors have led the recovery. First the small mom and pop inves-tors who buy a few homes to pro-duce rental income for their fami-lies. Then big investment funds got in on the action. There are several funds buying up homes throughout Wesley Chapel. They buy homes at just below market value, in good locations and condition. They have almost forced first time homebuyers out of the market. They pay cash, which is desirable over buyers try-ing to obtain mortgages in a strict lending environment. The number of homes on the mar-ket was already in steady decline for each month of 2012. So many homeowners are underwater on their mortgages and sell only when they have had to. But as inven-tory got lower each month and a lot of cash came into the market it pushed prices higher. The average

price per square foot in Wesley Cha-pel in February 2012 was $65.00. The average price as of February 28th 2013 was $74.00 per square foot that is a 12% increase year over year. The number of properties on the market went from 195 in Febru-ary 2012 to 130 in the same month of 2013, a 33% drop. Interest rates have increased one percentage point over the last year. They are still crazy low at 3.5% for buyers with good credit. But even these low rates, created by the Fed-eral Reserve, can’t last forever. As prices rise due to shortages of available housing, more homeown-ers will no longer be underwater on their mortgages. Owners that have wanted to move over the last six years will begin to put their homes on the market. This reduces pressure on inventory and stabilizes prices creating a more balanced market. A balanced market doesn’t favor either the seller or the buyer. So if you are considering selling your home, sooner is better than later. USF School of Music Concert Hall. “Seis de Mayo: Fiesta del Vientos” will feature an evening of Spanish

and Latino music ranging from classical to contemporary. springtime is here, which means many different things. To many it is a time for new

life, freshness and renewal. For those in cat rescue, it means kitten season is upon us.

Cat Crusaders, an all-volunteer, no-kill cat rescue of Tampa is based out of the New Tampa Petsmart located on Bruce B. Downs. Their vision was to re-home as many adoptable cats and kittens as possible. Re-homing

adoptable cats is one piece to the puzzle, spaying and neutering cats and kittens are another piece.

By spaying and neutering the population of cats and kittens are decreased, thus ensuring that the numbers of cats and kittens being euthanized decrease in our society. So Cat Crusaders is also active in TNR. (Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate, Return). This method enables the feral community to be controlled

humanely, since they cannot reproduce. Cat Crusaders of Tampa is also the leader among cat rescues regarding pulling cats from Animal Services to place for adoption.

The Tampa Bay area is flooded with cats and kittens every year looking for places that are safe that will enable them to survive. The feral population is huge, partly due to the tropical seasons and lack of hard winters in Tampa.

Cat Crusaders continues to do amazing work in the community and this is seen every time the group receives an email or phone call stating their adopted cat is doing great in their new home and brings happiness to the pet parents. More often than not, the cat or kitten was pulled from a kill shelter with only days or moments left to live. The cat or kitten was given a second chance and it happened because of the Cat Crusaders volunteers.

Cat Crusaders is always looking for volunteers, whether it’s adults to help

do adoptions, or families to foster cats or kittens, or teens looking for community service hours, there is always plenty of work to be done. Cat Crusaders goal for the future is to have a mobile adoption unit. This would allow the group to reach out to more places in the community and conduct adoptions from outside of Petsmart. Those who do not have the means to get out and see cats and kittens in stores and shelters would now have the opportunity to meet and adopt from the mobile adoption unit. With a mobile unit, more cats and kittens would find their forever homes.

Cat Crusaders conducts adoptions every Saturday and Sunday at New Tampa Petsmart. Cats are $50 and kittens are $75 or two for $100 to adopt. All cats and kittens are tested for feline leukemia and feline immunodeficiency virus, are up-to-date on their shots, spayed or neutered, and have a microchip. Great news for all garden enthu-siasts. Our plans for a community

garden place are moving forward as your Board of Supervisors has graciously approved a site, located in front of the tennis courts. The Board has also approved a dedicated site to start composting for the garden located in the rear of the clubhouse. A big THANK YOU to Jessica List for her community dedication and interest in jump starting this project for MPIV.

We are currently working out some minor details before we can officially break ground, but please check back each month as we will try to keep you updated on the status of the garden.

We anticipate a great interest so if you would like more information on reserving your very own garden plot, please contact Jessica at [email protected] or call 813-507-9898.

This May 17th, come to Freedom High School for Relay for Life New Tampa, and look for 15 women wearing pink cowboy hats. They are the Mary Kay Sisterhood. Over the past three years, this rip-roaring team has raised thousands of dollars to cure cancer.

Their wine tasting in March raised $880 of the $3,147 already banked

with the American Cancer Society. Quail Hollow Golf Club, Time for Wine, Jersey Mike’s and Hampton Inn stepped up to help. Bay City Bank in Lutz collected $137 in change at teller windows.

If you missed that event, come to the Mary Kay Sisterhood tent during the Relay. Buy chances for a Miche bag, Mary Kay skin care basket or an MK Men’s basket. After putting in your miles, get a foot and leg rub with Mary Kay energy cream.

The Sisterhood is especially passion-ate because two members are cancer survivors.

“It’s important for us to be there as sisters supporting each other and our faith. We have really bonded. The Luminaria Event is really special,” said Donna Moyer, Mary Kay Sisterhood team captain. To order a luminaria in honor or in memoriam of a loved one, call Moyer during business hours at 813-333-6668. v

Pasco County and District School Board members received first place in the

Public Education Category for their “Public Outreach in the 2015 Penny for Pasco Renewal” at the 21st Annual Future of the Region Awards luncheon sponsored by the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council, March 25th.

The award application highlighted the County, School District and Penny for Pasco Political Action Committee (PAC) work efforts and strategies for public education and outreach. Both the County and School District conducted public presentations, video informational segments, and held interviews with the media; while the County pro-duced utility bill Inserts, Penny for

Pasco Quick Facts, and sited Future Penny signs at strategic transporta-tion corridor locations. The Penny for Pasco Political Ac-tion Committee (PAC) was staffed with community representatives and leaders that reached out to the public with “Penny for Pasco” signs, a direct mail strategy, dedicated Penny website, Facebook page, and E-newsletters. The success of this

Public Outreach Campaign initiative is now being shared with other local governments (Charlotte County) try-ing to renew their local government infrastructure surtax. “The Penny Renewal Campaign was an outstanding team effort that included two public agencies and a dedicated group of private business interests working together. That team deserves this recognition for their out-standing efforts educating our citizens,” said Michele Baker, Chief Assistant County Administrator. “Additionally, we would like to say thank you to the Pasco County citizens who welcomed us into their clubhouses and classrooms to speak and who ultimately voted yes to support this critical investment in our community.” You can learn more about the Penny for Pasco page ( http://www.pasco-countyfl.net/index.aspx?NID=453) and how your penny works for you. Please follow us on facebook to stay current on local programs and initiatives. v
