Captains Report

Welcome back to 2018 Term 1. We would like to welcome back Mrs Gale and the new kindies and hope that they enjoy 2018 in their new classroom. We would like to welcome our new kids to our school and hope they make good friends. Just remember that the swimming carnival is coming up as it is on the 19th of February.

On the nineteenth of February the swimming carnival is coming up. It includes freestyle, backstroke, butterfly and breaststroke.

There is 100 metre freestyle ,50 metre freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly. There is also medley relays. If there is any children over the age of eight they should be going to the swimming carnival to either participate or cheer our school on.

Billy cart fun at Meadow Flat. Thanks Mr Brendan for the great helmets! We love our track.

Dogs in Schools

The Companion Animals Act (1998) prohibits dogs on school grounds, except where the

principal grants permission. In general the use of dogs for educational purposes in schools

is limited to the following:

- Working dogs on the school farm

- Visits by organised groups or programs, e.g. Responsible Pet Ownership

- Visits by community owned dogs, e.g. for news items

- Assistance dogs or Service dogs.

Classroom visits

When dogs visit a classroom, it is inappropriate to subject them to any procedures other

than observation, discussion of behaviour and limited, well-supervised handling.

A source of fresh drinking water should be provided and dogs must be protected from stress

such as loud noise and the approach of children who are not closely supervised by their

teacher. If the dog shows any signs of stress, it should be removed immediately from the

environment.

Risk assessment and reduction

To reduce the risk of injury and transmission of diseases from dogs to humans, teachers should ensure that students practice appropriate handling and good hygiene, including:

• interacting with the dog one at a time – those waiting standing well clear

• standing still and speaking quietly until approached by the dog

• using the handling techniques explained and demonstrated by the handler

• washing hands and contact areas thoroughly with soap and water after handling the dog

and before eating

• avoiding putting their hands near their faces while carrying out these activities

• not allowing the dog to lick their faces.

Dogs in the Tales of Tails program are temperament tested, up to date with all vaccinations,

and in good health with no injuries or illnesses.
