Mead w Pointe news

Inside is an informative article on Trick or Treat/Halloween safety. This may be old hat for some,

but it can’t hurt to brush up a bit and see if there are any new thoughts on the subject. Halloween is definitely one of children’s top holidays and we want them all to have fun and stay safe. And remind them to stay on the sidewalks. The streets will be busy with cars and some costumes are hard to see. Remember to send us your costume, party and Trick or Treat pictures for the November issue. [email protected] There are some fun events planned for October in different parts of Meadow Pointe. Check inside for details.

In November we will have our Christmas Coloring Contest. Look for a full size coloring page for children to color and send. The first place winner will receive a $25 gift card to Toys R Us on December 20th and the top 10 will be posted in the December newsletter.

Happy Halloween!!

CDD SUPERvISOR

Tell a little bit about your background…Meadow Pointe became home in 2001 shortly after moving to Florida from San Francisco. I was looking for a family-oriented neighborhood with plenty of amenities for my young son, and Meadow Pointe 1 had it all.

My career shifted from business and bookkeep-ing to communications and design after a 2-year stint in southern Africa with the Peace Corps in the early 90s. I have been a graphic designer for 18 years, and for the past 10, have worked at the Department of Child & Family Studies at USF. I have always enjoyed volunteering, and in my spare time, am active in my son’s school PTA; assist Hillsborough River State Park with its marketing needs and Haunted Woods event; and at the end of this month will join thousands of others walking 60 miles in the Susan G. Komen’s 3-Day for a Cure.

What made you want to be a MP1 CDD supervisor?I first got involved with the CDD when I vol-unteered to create a website for Meadow Pointe. I learned from my Sand Pine experience that by getting involved and volunteering, you can get plugged into what is really going on, and using

the web, can then share the information with other families. Initially, what made me interested in running for a seat on the CDD board was a decision the Board made that I disagreed with. By being on the Board, I could have a vote in what happens in our community and perhaps make a difference. Now that I’ve held this seat for 3 years, I have tremendous respect for the work of the CDD and what it takes to keep everything running smoothly.

What are your top priorities for improving our community?I am excited about Meadow Pointe 1’s continued upgrading of our facilities. It is a challenge in this economic environment to keep assessments down and stay competitive with the newer communities in our area. We are doing just that with our new racquetball court/fitness center, splash pad, playground being planned, and more projects planned for the future. By keeping people informed through www.meadowpointecdd.com, as well as the Meadow Pointe monthly magazine, I hope residents will feel more connected to our community and each other.

How do you see Meadow Pointe 1 in the future? My hope for Meadow Pointe 1 is to continue to improve the amenities, while giving residents an opportunity to have a common place to gather for family activities and events. I want to live in a community where neighbors not only know each other, but are there to help their neighbors in need.

During the August 4 CDD meeting, the Board of Supervisors approved the budget for FY 2012 (October 2011

MP1 Budget & Assessments for FY 2012

comparison, single-family homes in non-gated villages

in Meadow Pointe II will pay assessments totaling $1359 in FY 12. Our

district will pay off the remaining balance on our bonds no later than May 1, 2012.

Therefore, the remaining DSF assessment (which is $332.43 this year for FY

2012) will be eliminated from the FY 2013 budget, further reducing the total assessment next year.

Our district will have the distinction of being the only district in Meadow Pointe without any debt. The budget contains sufficient funds to replace the aging playground equipment at both the Community Center Park and Pinedale Park and bring them into compliance with the new Americans with Disabilities Act requirements going into effect in 2012. The Meadow Pointe 1 budget can be found on our website at www.meadowpointecdd.com under Finances. v

The Meadow Pointe Community Council (MPCC) is a group of residents represent-ing each of the 11 villages in MP1. The group operates in a relaxed environment at its monthly meetings. Collaborating with the CDD, we plan events and projects enhanc-ing MPI. The MPCC is currently looking for a representative for Pinedale village. We also welcome anyone from the other MPI villages who wish to join the group—even if we already have a village rep. More members

means more representation which means more impact on our community. Together we can make a difference. The hour-long meetings are the first Monday of the month at 7pm. Stop by one of the meetings, see what goes on and join the group if you like. We’re now planning the annual Holiday Fair to be held in early November.

I n the last couple of months we have had a lot of rain. The ponds are very full right now. As residents

it is important to remember a few things in regards to the storm water pond in your community. Never blow your grass clippings in the ponds, in the street culverts or in the street. These will cause algae blooms in your pond which are unsightly and can smell bad. Keep grass fertilizer 15 feet from the pond’s edge. Fertilizer that enters

the water can cause a rise in nutri-ent levels which will cause algae and underwater growth.

If you live near a pond and see an al-gae bloom, please contact the Meadow Pointe II clubhouse @ 991-5016. Thank you, Tony Smith Regional ManagerAmerican Ecosystems Ponds

AskMolly

The Meadow Pointe II newsletter committee is excited to introduce a new column Ask Molly. Each month we will try to answer your questions/concerns. If you have something to ask Molly, please email [email protected].

Dear Molly:

I live on a quiet street with terrific neighbors. We all get along wonderfully. There is only one prob-lem. One of my neighbors has a filthy mailbox. It is a pet peeve of mine and I have been trying to give her ‘hints’. For example, one day when she was outside gardening; I grabbed my spray bottle (water/Clorox mix) and started cleaning my (already sparkling clean) mailbox. I cheerfully pointed out how easy it is to clean the mailbox with a spray bottle. She giggled, and agreed that Clorox mixed with water sure does a super job. Also mentioned to her that the clubhouse sells mailbox paint for $6.00 ($3.00 each color) … Well, well, well, it’s been over a week and guess what, her mailbox is still dirty. I told my husband I was going to ask her if she minded if I cleaned it; my husband strongly advised against that. I am frustrated, and don’t know what to do.

Help! … Desperate in Deer Run

Dear Desperate:

No worries, help is on the way. Unkempt mailboxes are a violation of the deed restrictions. Flyers are being hand delivered to all homes in non-HOA villages gently reminding residents that mailboxes and posts need to be kept clean.

If left unkempt, a deed restriction letter will be mailed to their home. No one wants that!!!

Dear Molly:

My husband and I are empty-nesters, having survived, I mean, raised three boys who are now married and living in other states. We are new to Florida having recently purchased a home in Meadow Pointe II. My husband loves to tinker in the garage (how could one man spend so much time in a hot garage, I don’t know). He is, how-ever, quite content ... I would like to venture out into the community. Any ideas? Feeling Antsy in Iverson

Dear Antsy:

Welcome to Meadow Pointe II. Please stop by the clubhouse and introduce yourself. We’ll be happy to take you on a tour of our facilities, give you a new resident packet and take your picture for MPII ID Card. Some activities for you to consider: The Tampa Bay Newcomers group meets at the clubhouse to play Mah Jongg and they also host other activities. Or, why not try our water aerobics. (If you need to lose a few pounds or are just health conscious-- and who isn’t-- join our fitness center (for a one time $10 fee – what a deal!) It has numerous exercise machines, a TV, air conditioning and fans (you’ll stay so cool, you might not even break a sweat), lockers, a restroom and a scale (for those brave enough to weigh themselves).

If your husband ever decides to leave the garage, perhaps he would like to join the Men’s group on Friday evenings. Or perhaps, if the two of you are light on your feet, try the Dance Con-nection Class. A professional dance instructor teaches the Foxtrot, Waltz and East Coast Swing (for a small fee). Check out the Clubs List for more activities/info. v

This month’s Volunteer Spotlight is on Jan Roberts. Jan is a lifelong resident of Tampa Bay and moved to Meadow

Pointe in 1998. She resides with her husband Tim and two daughters - Jennifer and Brittany.

Jan first became involved in the community by joining the Sand Pine PTA Board and the Stu-dent Advisory Committee (SAC) and volun-teered in the classroom. As her children moved on she moved with them. She has volunteered at Weightman, then John Long Middle School SAC and currently serves on the Wiregrass Ranch High School SAC.

She is active at Crossroads Community Church where she feels serving on every committee in the church helps her understand the church body. Jan is a member of a team her daughter

leads for Wiregrass Relay for Life. She also volunteers with both the Wesley Chapel and Zephyrhills Chamber of Commerce, serving as Ambassador and is currently running for Honorary Mayor of Wesley Chapel.

In earlier years Jan was a Girl Scout Leader for eight years and also volunteered with Big Brothers Big Sisters and now works for the organization, so BBBS is her selected Charity for her volunteer fundraising.

When we asked Jan why she volunteers her time she replied “It makes such a difference to help; whether serving on a mission trip locally or in Africa, or just helping in the kitchen at the church; assisting at the school, or raising funds in her free time for Big Brothers Big Sisters, just helping others – it is all so rewarding.” v

The Wesley Chapel Cowboys is celebrating their 10th an-niversary this season one year

behind the 10th anniversary of the Wesley Chapel Athletic Associa-tion. Over the years, Mike McCarn and Dawn Wetherby started and nurtured the tackle football and cheer programs. The Cowboys were origi-nally part of the West Coast Youth Football Conference, which included long-standing teams such as the Plant City Dolphins and East Bay Bucs.

Currently, the Cowboys are a part of the Gulf Coast Youth Football Conference.

The Cowboys experienced tremen-dous growth and success; there are five age group levels for both the tackle football and cheer programs ranging from 5 to 14 years old. Originally, the Cowboys practiced on any patch of grass they could find or in the field by the firehouse in Meadow Pointe. They would

play their games on the field behind Thomas Weightman Middle School. For the past four years, the Cowboys called the Wesley Chapel District Parks on Boyette Road their home.

The Cowboys Cheerleaders ac-cumulated quite a few trophies over the years. During the conference Cheer-Offs the Cowboys cheerleaders brought home 28 trophies. In cheer competitions outside of the confer-ence, the Cowboys have 48 trophies with 3 grand champions’ titles. This year’s current varsity cheerleading squad hold the defending champions title for the East Bay Cheer Classic, Gulf Coast Cheer Classic and the GCYFC Cheer-Off. In addition, many of the high school varsity teams at Wiregrass High School and Wesley Chapel High School were former Cowboys Cheerleaders.

The Cowboys Tackle Football program has had its fair share of wins including four Super Bowl Cham-pions. Also, many of the Cowboys have gone on to play at both the high school and college levels. This year at the homecoming game October 1st

against the Brandon Bears the fol-lowing players will be inducted into the Cowboys Hall of Fame: Frankie Walther, Kenny Bryant and Dylan Koesling.

The Wesley Chapel Cowboys are also proud to be a supporter of the Wesley Chapel Community. Over the years the Cowboys have been known for giving back by donating to schools and organizations. The Cowboys supported the Tampa Fire/Police Badge Bowl for many years with baskets for their auction and the cheerleaders performed at their half-time event. They also helped kids who could not afford to play organized sports with scholarships and financial assistance.

The Cowboys continue to promote good sportsmanship, fair play and teamwork. If you are interested in more information go to the Wesley Chapel Athletic Association website at http://wcaa.countmein.com/. Reg-istration for Tackle and Cheer will begin again in March 2012. How ‘bout them COWBOYS!! v

Insurance New tampaInsurance New Tampa, LLC just

celebrated the first year in busi-ness as an independent agency!

Partners, Susan Casey and Robert Black, are very excited to make the next announcement, the opening of a second office. The current office is located at 54 & Eiland Blvd. in the Home Depot plaza next to Wendy’s. The new office will be at 1527 Dale Mabry Hwy., Suite 106 in Lutz across the street from Walmart.

Being an independent agency, Insurance New Tampa has access to multiple A-rated insurance com-panies. This allows the “shopping” of rates and carriers to see which best suits your needs. This can be done for auto, home, motorcycle, boat, business, accident, and life insurance. Financial services are also offered through the agency. In today’s

very stressful economic climate it is more important than ever to review your current position against your financial goals. Certified and licensed professionals offer a free, no obliga-tion, and completely confidential consultation.

Their growth over the past year is a reflection of the quality of services of-fered. They have invested in state-of-the-art technology that includes an agency management system, which keeps all of our policies and clients organized. It keeps us abreast of future changes of policies and condi-tions that may affect our policyhold-ers. This gives them the opportunity to be proactive instead of reactive on behalf of our clients. If you are an online person you can visit the agency at www.insurancenewtampa.com 24/7 and obtain quotes for your

auto insurance and request additional information.

Insurance in Florida, especially homeowners, is in a state of flux. They pride themselves on being informed about changes and pro-posed changes enacted by legislation. This allows them to help our clients make informed decisions on their insurance. Anticipating the trend of homeowner’s insurance companies leaving Florida, they have positioned ourselves to offer replacement insur-ance for those losing their coverage.

The philosophy of their agency is to be involved with our clients and keep them informed. They do this by monthly newsletters that include cur-rent insurance events, such as sink-hole coverage changes and seasonally appropriate information, for example

hurricane awareness. In addition, to show their commitment and thanks they also hold customer appreciation events throughout the year. These events are a great opportunity for them to stay in touch!

They invite anyone with insurance questions and concerns to contact us. You can reach us by phone at 813-435-6350, by email at [email protected], online at www.insurancenewtampa.com, or visit us at either office. v

The Shops at Wiregrass has always allowed well behaved pets on leashes, but on

October 29th, the Shops goes to the dogs . .and cats . . and birds.

Animal Based Charities, Inc., is hosting their 3rd Dogtoberfest Pet Costume Contest and Adoption Event at the Shops with prizes including trophies and gift cards for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, in each of 6 different categories, so people and their pets can get creative.

The categories for the pets this year include Most Festive Costume, Cutest Costume, Scariest Costume, Best Costume Transforming Pet in to a different animal, Best Celebrity look-a-like , and the one that allows humans to be part of the festivities, Owner/Pet look a like. Registration begins at 10 a.m. in Center Court.

The event is shaping up to be THE PET EVENT of the year because

surrounding Center Court will be more than 50 different pet rescue groups with adoptable pets and pet-related vendors. While there will be a lot of dogs and puppies available for adoptions, with cat and kittens as well, there will be other less common pets available for adoption. “Its hard to announce what rescues will have available on the day of the event, but ferrets, guinea pigs and lizards will probably be available as well.

There will be Halloween themed pictures available for a donation for anyone in the costume contest or anyone who adopts a new family member. All proceeds raised go to the animal rescue organizations participating, to help more animals.

Whether you come out to enter your family pet in the costume contest, to find a new family pet, or just to be part of the festivities, it will be a great day for all. v

CLEANINgMailboxes need a little attention from time to time. That’s especially true for the ones located under trees. An occasional spraying with Clorox Cleanup or a comparable product will cut through any dirt and algae with a minimum of rubbing and scrubbing. After cleaning, think about applying a coat of car wax to the receptacle to help keep it clean.

REPLACEMENT RECEPTACLESIf your mail receptacle can’t be cleaned, has too many dents, or has a faulty hinge, you can buy a replacement at any hardware store. Metal mailboxes have the most curb appeal, but vinyl receptacles will do, too. Only classic, curved-top rural receptacles are permitted; rectangular mailboxes are not.

PATCHINgEventually, all wood mailbox posts will need patching and paint. Minor cracks in the wood can be filled with spackle, but you’ll get better long-term results from an exterior-grade product like Elmer’s Wood Filler. If there are signs of rot in the wood,

you’ll need to apply a hardener to stabilize the wood fibers, then fill with an epoxy product made for the job. Minwax makes a good hardener and a good epoxy filler.

PAINTINgOnce all the cracks are patched, it’s time to sand the entire surface and apply a coat of paint. In Meadow Pointe III & IV, the body of the post is beige, and the accent color is teal. The pre-approved paint colors are:

REPAIR & REPLACEMENT SERvICESThe association knows of craftsmen who have a proven ability to repair or replace any mailbox in Meadow Pointe III or IV, at reasonable cost to homeowners. The contractors will inspect your mailbox and mailbox post and quote prices for the appropriate alternatives. Help is available from: • Sam Ogden (813) 406-4545 [email protected]• Harris Romaner (813) 991-6069 [email protected]

REPLACEMENT POSTS Wood mailbox posts no longer are being produced by the original manufacturer. A few homeowners have purchased 6”x6” pieces of timber and made replacement posts that are barely distinguishable from the original. The do-it-yourself solution continues to be an option.

Another alternative is a vinyl mailbox post from the company which installed the wooden models. The vinyl models are a little smaller than the original versions, and they are less expensive.

Most residents have a post that supports just one mailbox. That costs $238 plus tax. A dual-mailbox post costs $302.40 plus tax. Installation of either style costs $40. (Professional installation is recommended, mainly because the postal service can refuse to deliver mail at mailboxes that do not conform to standards for mailbox height and distance from the curb.)

To order one of the new PVC mailboxes, call Creative Mailbox and Sign Designs at 818-7100 and ask for the Meadow Pointe III & IV model. v

gIRL SCOUTSSUPPORT SISTER gIRL SCOUTS IN JAPAN In March, Girl Scouts of the USA encouraged girls to make origami cranes (Sadako) to send to their sister Girl Scouts in Japan as expressions of friendship after the devastating earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011. Girl Scout Senior Troop 457 (Wesley Chapel) took the call to heart and made 1,000 cranes to send to Girl Scouts in Japan. They started making the cranes in June and continued dur-ing each meeting over the summer. Thank you Ashley B., Laura B., Alyssa B., Alexis B., Aspen C. and Dana L. – your support is sure to bring smiles to your sister Girl Scouts!

LOCAL gIRL SCOUT WINS NATIONAL ROCkET CONTEST For Second con-Secutive Year Girl Scouts of West Central Florida (GSWCF) is thrilled to announce that Girl Scout Cadette Mari Hernandez (grade 6) of Tampa was one of six national winners of the year-long Reach for the Stars Rocket Contest, presented by the Helping Kids Reach for the Stars program.

Mari and her family will visit Kennedy Space Center (Ca-naveral, Fla.) this weekend, where she will have the oppor-tunity to launch her rocket. When asked how she felt about winning, Mari said, “It’s pretty amazing – I didn’t ex-pect to win. A girl who didn’t know anything about science just won a rocket contest!” Mari built her winning rocket earlier this summer during the Minds for Design day camp, attended by more than 30 girls. Mari and Charnae Horton, another girl at the day camp, launched their rockets and landed closest the pre-designated target and were entered into the national competition.

“One of Girl Scouts’ initiatives is STEM (science, technology, engi-neering and math), and we wanted to offer a STEM day camp that would give girls the opportunity to try new things,” said Patricia Hemenway, pathway collaborations manager, GSWCF. “Mari is a terrific role model for girls of all ages – whether or not they’re in Girl Scouting – to reach for the stars… anything is possible!” Mari is the second Girl Scout from west central Florida, and the third Girl Scout overall, to win this pres-tigious award. In 2010, Girl Scout Cadette Azriel Clary of Kissimmee (then in grade 7), won the top prize, and in 2009, Michelle Jorgensen of Colorado Springs, Colo., took home the award. In addition, Girl Scouts has a rich history with NASA – 22 career astronauts are Girl Scout alumnae. Girl Scouts recognizes the need for girls to pursue educational courses in STEM (science, technology, engi-neering, math) at an early age; have opportunities to participate in STEM activities; and the overall benefit to the workforce and economy result-ing from girls and women pursu-ing STEM careers. As a council, GSWCF offers STEM programs throughout the year. v

does your mailbox have wood dam-age, need repaired, or painted. Sam

Ogden, the mailbox medic has been repairing and painting mailboxes in Meadow Pointe and the surrounding area for the last year and a half. In fact, it’s possible many of you reading this have utilized his services. A basic restoration cost is $30. The process consists of cleaning the mailbox with mildew cleaner, removing the box and numbers, sanding the entire post and arms, and filling in all exposed cracks with spackle/sealant.

The post and arms are then painted with the required Meadow Pointe colors and the box and numbers are put back on and reattached to the post. If there is major or minor repairs Sam, will assess what needs to be done in order to get your mailbox back to pristine condition. If needed, he can even replace the post if it is beyond repair. Call Sam Ogden, the Mailbox Medic, at 813-406-4545 and get your mailbox restored.

According to statistics, children are likely to be injured from falling accidents on Hal-

loween night four times more than any other night. It stands to reason what with improperly fitted costumes, masks that block vision and hearing, and children crowded together, pushing, in a hurry to get to the next house. There are basic safety tips that can insure your family has a safe Hal-loween night.

But don’t wait until Halloween night to spring all these safety tips on them. Because of the excitement of

the night, the sugar they may have consumed before going out, and the natural ability of children to tune adults out, you may want to begin addressing this issue long before then. It’s easy to sneak in a safety tip here and there throughout the week before.

Costumes are one leading cause of accidents during this holiday, which can be alleviated by making sure the costume doesn’t drag the ground. By allowing the child to wear the costume before the big night, you can check to see if it needs hem-

By Angela Lytle

ming. And above all else, check the label and make sure it’s either flame retardant or flame resistant. Polyester is generally the best choice of material for the costume since cotton has a tendency to burn quickly.

Other safety measures include making sure your child’s mask is easy to see out of and there are no sharp items being carried that can cause injury when falling. Have your child carry a flashlight, even if you’re going out with them, or one of the many glow sticks available. By going with children you are insuring their safety, but when you can’t, always make sure children travel in a group and there is someone old enough to supervise.

Shoes that match the costume are not always a good idea, especially if these shoes are hard to walk in, wobbly, or too elevated. A safe shoe to wear for tramping door to door on this dark and scary night would be tennis shoes. Maybe paint “Tinkerbelle’s or Buzz Lightyear’s white tennis shoes with sparkly glitter and other decorations.Remind them about sharing and

making sure they don’t crowd to the front of the line and push fellow trick-or-treaters. Shoving causes accidents. Keep the excitement down by not allowing them sugar treats before they leave the house. And above all else: No candy consumed until they get home to have it inspected.

For older children who will be trick-or-treating without parents, make sure there is a curfew set, or better yet, make sure those older children check in with you periodically so you know their safe.

What would Halloween be without carved pumpkins? But remember, a candle-lit pumpkin on the porch, or dangerously placed, can be hazard-ous. Place the lit pumpkin away from where the child will stand waiting for candy. Talk to your kids about the hazards of burning jack-o-lanterns and lit up decorations.

Have a safe and healthy Halloween. Enjoy the night! v
