A LETTER FROM THE CHAIR OF THE ASSOCIATION May 6th 2019

My Dear Friends,

The FURLONGS FESTIVAL is going from strength to strength.

Unfortunately the crowds coming last year meant that it was quite cramped for space around the arena & you had to push past stalls to find your way to a cup of tea… So the Committee of the Residents Association has arranged with Sutton-on-Sea Rovers to use the WHOLE of the football field this year, freeing up the field we usually for parking & for the Dog Show… allowing dog owners to use their cars for shelter or shade for their dogs while they are not being judged.

And a great number of acts have been booked in… among them the MIGHTY SMITH SHOW. My namesake (fortuitously!), Adrian Smith, weighs in at 266lb & is 5’ 11’’ high wth a 54’’ chest & 21” biceps… As well as bending 6” nails & walking on a bed of broken glass he promised to pick up a lady on a chair with his teeth & challenge our children to a tug o’ war.

Among the other acts to which we are looking forward is a Mountain-bike Aerial Display team (pictured below) with the acronym MAD…

“We’re all mad here!” says the Cheshire Cat to Alice: and when the little girl asks “How do you know I’m mad?” the Cat sagely replies, “You must be, or you wouldn’t have come here.” Many of us must feel like that about Sutton-on-Sea!

Certainly there are times when visitors to our resort turn up without having been warned in advance that we have a Tea Dance on our promenade or Romans skirmishing on our sands or ladies doing formation dancing on shopping trolleys in the street must be bemused to say the least. So do give anyone you know who might be heading our way in August notice of the date: August 21st.

Meanwhile, going back to our strap-line about going from strength to strength we can also let people know of other blessings abounding in our resort. I have the 1934 Town Guide someone has given me which speaks of the considered medical opinion that SUNSHINE IS GOOD FOR YOU.

Many things have changed over the years, but this benefit of living in Sutton-on-Sea has not. Because of the sea on one side of us & the low-lying Wolds on our western horizon we enjoy a vast expanse of sky & longer days. If the considered medical opinion of the 1930s is right we can also expect to enjoy longer lives (even if that does not mean we are going to go around picking up ladies with our teeth…) (We are still currently lacking a Dentist after all…)

With all good wishes,

Adrian

“WHAT’S ON” IS NOW COMING OUT WEEKLY ONCE MORE

Since the autumn of 2016 Brian Wesley (of the Coastal Centre & our local radio “Coastal Breeze”) has been compiling the weekly “WHAT’S ON” guide, supplementing the material that appears every other month in “TROVE” & the MERIDALE NEWS with up to date info on local events.

This last winter, however, the Coastal Centre committee agreed with Brian it should take a break. It was in a way a victim of its own success. So much material was flooding in that the booklet became more & more time consuming to produce, & more & more expensive to bring out. The small charge for it did not cover the costs & collecting money for adverts was quite a labour. Still, even though much of the material was still appearing on line (on the Coastal Breeze website), when hard copies no longer appeared THEY WERE MISSED… so the Coastal Centre Management Committee felt the idea should be given another go.

In particular words of Dr Simon Lowe at the Marisco Medical Practice rang true: “More people die of loneliness than of pneumonia.”

One of the great things about “WHAT’S ON” was that it helped people meet people & helped them join in a range of activities. Friends we meet by belonging to a club or trying out a different activity can often help in a casual way. They can buck up our spirits when things are getting us down … & there are not many “pick me ups” like that available on the NHS!

The new format of “WHAT’S ON” is much simpler. The outside is in colour with adverts for key events on the front (& a charge of £10 for one-off plugs). Inside usually will be the current Friday to Friday events on the left, while on the right the following week-end’s events will be flagged up. On the back there is a calendar of future events. The other bit of information people ask for are the local tide times… useful if you are going fishing or beach-combing or exercising your dog. The high tides will be rated low, average, high or very high. The info is available on line but it is often simpler to check in this little leaflet.

The stripped back version of “WHAT’S ON” will be made possible by pruning away all the regular events which make our community so vibrant. There are over 24 venues & 200 or so groups meeting in them. These will be eventually listed in INSETS which will be themed & updated once a month. On the first week of the month the inset will list weekly social events, the 2nd week will list hobbies & special interest groups, the 3rd week will list sport, health & well-being activities, the 4th week will list arts & crafts & drama & music groups, & when there is a 5th week the inset will carry info on faith groups, churches & points where special help is available. These insets will be updated each month but will be available at the Coastal Centre, at Marisco & at the libraries. So if someone is searching for a particular activity they will be able to ask for the current version. They will then be brought together in a single booklet which of course under this system will be regularly up-dated.

“WHAT’S ON” can be picked up from mid-morning each week from Lammiman’s & Samantha’s (just up Station Road from the Co-op), from the Broadway Library Community Hub & from the Info Area at Marisco. And of course if you want an event advertized do let us know!

ADVANCE NOTICE FROM THE ENVIRONMENT AGENCY

An update about the resurfacing works we will be carrying out on our sea wall between Trusthorpe & Sutton-on-Sea later this spring.

We previously let you know that we will be doing some further work in addition to our normal beach nourishment campaign this year. The surface on top of our sea defences between Trusthorpe & Sutton-on-Sea has become worn over the years. This surface contributes to the protection of the structural integrity of our sea defences by providing a protective layer which prevents salt water from entering our structures. It is therefore important that we maintain the surface to prevent cracks & other issues from occurring.

We are now able to confirm that this work will be taking place from 3rd June onwards. We expect that limited sections of the sea wall will need to be cordoned off from the public for a period of some weeks to allow our contractors to carry out the necessary resurfacing work.

We will be putting up advisory notices along the sea defences & at various locations in the community to inform residents & visitors.

We will endeavour to limit any inconvenience caused but if you have any queries about these works or about this year’s beach nourishment campaign, which is set to start in May, please feel free to contact me on [email protected]

or by calling me on 07840 639 326.

Yes, although the name [AND the reputation!] of this group is now firmly established, it has to be underlined that its members come from all over our part of the coast, Sutton-on-Sea certainly & from as far afield as Chapel. And it is not just for men. Women are very welcome!

The group meets, currently, in “The Old Toilet Block” at the Golf Road Pullover (opposite The Loewen Cinema) in Mablethorpe on Monday, Thursday, & Saturdays between 9am & noon. Members interchange skills & assistance to enable members to make a variety of items such as Bird Feeders, Bird Boxes, Rocking Horses & Ornamental Wheelbarrows. The range of items is limited only by the space & tools available. The group’s efforts can be seen in the form of the Train Flower Planter at the High Street end of Station Road in Mablethorpe. It has also produced planters for “Furnichurch”.

Membership is o0pen to all over 18 & costs £24 per year but people are allowed the opportunity to try it out for a couple of times before asking for enrolment. Check out the group’s website:

The aims of the Men’s Shed are:

◎ To increase participation

in practical activities Its objectives are:

◎ To provide a venue where members

Every year in the UK we throw out around 1.6m tonnes of furniture & bulky waste, most of which ends up in landfill. Yet with a bit of imagination many items of furniture can be given a new lease of life, saving both the planet & our bank account!

A new shop called Chester & George will be opening in May at 19 High Street, Alford, which will offer a wide selection of the things you need to upcycle & repurpose furniture. They even offer a repair & renovation service if you haven’t the time to do up your furniture yourself.

Chester & George is the only stockist in Lincolnshire of GraceMary Chalk and Clay paint, which is handmade in Cornwall. The paint is VOC free & comes in an array of beautiful colours. It’s easy to use & has amazing coverage.

Chester & George

19 High Street Alford

Tel. 07957 272852

“At Chester & George we want to support British independent companies & so our range, from brushes to stencils are made in the U.K.” Chester & George’s proprietor explained. “We want to showcase items that can make your upcycling project a joy to work on. We are blessed on the East Coast with lots of really good second hand furniture shops. So you pick up furniture really cheap & with a little bit of effort turn it into a bespoke item. Or you can update a tired piece of furniture you already own. You don’t have to be “arty” to achieve stunning results.”

Chester & George also plays host to an Art Gallery featuring original artwork for sale by local artist Sai alongside a selection of furniture for sale that has been upcycled to showcase the colours & finishes of GraceMary paint & provide you with inspiration for your own projects.

So don’t throw away that old table or wardrobe, renovate it... Because furniture doesn’t have to cost the Earth!

AN UP-CYCLING STORY

A couple of months ago we pencilled in Spring Bank Holiday Monday 27th May for a Grand Bell Launch Party. But we are still tangled up in a bit of red tape from government agencies such as The Crown Estates & the Marine Licencing Organisation. And despite some good cooperation from the various people involved, things have moved a bit more slowly than we hoped. We’ve now rescheduled the Time & Tide Bell launch event to

Midsummer’s Day.

On Friday the 21st June, the longest day of the

year, sunset & high tide coincide at about half past nine in the evening, a few hours after the moment of solstice. We hope we will be able to hear the Bell ring for the first time at this auspicious moment, the motions of the Solar System reminding us of our place as we continue our greenhouse gas emissions, forcing global warming &sea level rise. We will offer the Bell to the oceans as the rising waters of the Greater North Sea engulf it over the coming decades & centuries.

Ronald Brian Shields (but invariably known as Bud) was born in Sutton & lived here all his life apart from when he was away on National Service & when he was training as a teacher. He was born in 1931 & lived to be 88. He was a teacher at Sutton school but left teaching to take over his family's garage business when his father became ill.

Bud's first wife was Margaret but she died in 1984 after over 26 years of marriage. Bud already knew Janet since they had taught together & they married the following year. They have enjoyed over 30 years of happy marriage. Janet has cared for Bud wonderfully during his long steady decline in health from Parkinson's disease. They supported each other in their many interests and commitments & they particularly enjoyed their holidays in their motor home.

A TRIBUTE TO BUD SHIELDS M.B.E.

Bud at the family garage during the Flood

Bud was always adventurous. At the age of four he went to Mablethorpe & back on his tricycle without telling his mum where he was going. As a young man he swam to save a woman from drowning during the 1953 Flood. In the army he drove Centurion tanks. Later on he drove round Le Mans racing circuit & tested tyres at Silverstone. He was a member of Mablethorpe Motor Club & was navigator for David Skinner. One year they won every trophy going.

Bud liked to say “yes” to every opportunity. He climbed to the top of the Humber Bridge, went out to a North Sea rig, went on the dredger that recharges our beaches, & was “rescued” from the North Sea by our inshore life boat. He paraglided in Switzerland & flew in a microlight plane.

There is insufficient space to list all that Bud did for our community but here are some. He was a Town Councillor for some 40 years & served as mayor three times. He was elected to the ELDC in 1987 & served as Chairman 1994/5. He was a member of Alford Drainage Board from 1978 & its Chair in 1990/91. He was a founder member of the Rotary Club & was elected as its president in 1987. For these & many other services to our community & environment Bud was made a MBE in 2000. In honouring Bud we offer our condolences to Janet paying tribute to the way she has cared for Bud over his last years.

Geoff Clarkson of Station Road has passed to us a perceptive piece on the current BREXIT impasse. It ends comparing our situation to that of the Babes in the Wood: “the two toddlers welcomed into a beautiful woodland cottage & given all they wanted while they were growing up. As time moved on they only wanted to be free but could not get out because the exit door was too small. Perhaps we in the UK are in the same plight as those two bewitched young children in the fairytale because we are too big to get thtough the exit door.” Geoff’s analogy suggests another one: of the effort it took to rescue Pooh after he had eaten too much of Rabbit’s honey!
