The Mablethorpe Area Partnership is hosting a drop in session at the Coastal Centre on Saturday 29th February… the extra day the Leap Year gives us. It will give us the opportunity to take stock of the many ideas coming forward inspired by the offer of up to £25 million from the government’s Towns Fund. On offer as well is an investment in opening a railway line to Mablethorpe, & an expression of interest in this has been lodged with the government.
MAP holds regular leaflet swops so businesses & community groups can let others know what they are planning. This swop will be used to give everyone the opportunity to all to think about our future & take part in shaping it.

“Challenge” is a great word with many connotations. We physically challenged ourselves to dig deep holes in some of the densest jungle & rockiest terrain imaginable. We challenged ourselves mentally, travelling in ways we aren’t used to, staying in accommodation we would have never deemed to be safe & living in a new culture that is so vastly far removed from our own. Lastly we challenged ourselves emotionally. Seeing sights we will never forget, fighting our moral compass on cultural behaviours & being left emotionally drained after shedding tears for the Ugandan people living in the most unimaginable poverty.
AND NOW …ANOTHER CHALLENGE
Sarah Louise has been invited by ELDC to chair the Board that has to prepare the PLAN which has to be presented to the government by next summer so it can be considered for an investment of up to £50 million, half for Skegness & half for Mablethorpe. Sarah Louise’s appointment together with that of Chris Baron, Resort Director at Butlins, as Vice Chair, was unanimously endorsed by a show of hands at the first meeting of the Board held at Sutton-on-Sea’s Bacchus Hotel on January 27th.
Although entering the terrain of our sea-side resorts might be compared to entering an African jungle Sarah Louise does not have that far to travel as she helps run her family business, supplying eggs to our major supermarkets, from her home just outside Alford in Bilsby. And from here, as a mother of four, it has been pretty natural to bring them to our resort for breaks during the holidays.
The new Joint Board has been named the CONNECTED COAST BOARD … and, so it can examine in depth the needs of the two distinct resorts two “PLACE REFERENCE GROUPS” are being set up.
◀These are the words of Sarah Louise Fairburn,
seen above [RIGHT] with a fellow volunteer taking part in the challenge to plant 1,000 trees in Uganda. ………………………………………………………………….. In its Prospectus the government emphasizes the need for local & private business involvement. The Board itself has to be business-led & the ELDC has to take ultimate responsibility for spending any forth-coming funds: but the TOWN PLAN has to be generated at a local community level.
In 2014 Mablethorpe Area Partnership won government funding to set up the Coastal Community Team. Its open general meetings have ensured it has on it key sector representatives & they have already been engaged in much preliminary spade-work. It was very much due to these efforts that our MP Victoria Atkins was able to put our resort forward as one of the smallest towns to be considered for this amazing funding.
The CCT Treasurer Janet Stubbs of Woodthorpe has been invited by ELDC to be a business rep on the Board & she has been active networking with many of our local businesses to identify their concerns.
Cllr Helen Matthews, the Chair of the CCT & of MAP, was invited by ELDC to chair the Place Reference Group. Our Mayor Cllr Carl Tebbutt was elected to the Board to represent the Town Council, while I was elected to it at an open meeting of the CCT. We will be present just about all day at the MAP DROP IN on February 29th when we hope to start exploring the many exciting ideas now bubbling up. PLEASE DO COME WITH YOURS!!!

CORRESPONDENCE FROM A CARTOONIST
Hello ,
My wife and I have visited Mablethorpe many, many times over the last thirty years or so. We have a caravan at Saltfleet & in many ways consider Mablethorpe & Sutton to be our second home for much of the year.
I have been creating & supplying single panel "filler" cartoons to community magazines such as yours for the last few years. The idea is that these will fill space where you have not been able to recruit a suitable advertisement.
They have proved popular in other areas & I am offering these cartoons at no cost to yourselves. The only thing I would ask, if you do choose to use them, is for you to post a copy of the first print edition to me for my files.
My only other objective is to spread a little light humour.
Look forward to hearing from you. Best Rgds,
T. Noons
MANY THANKS! At the moment we are fortunate in quite a number wanting to

IN MEMORIAM
There was a packed church at Trusthorpe to bid farewell to Joan Bowers pictured here with her sister Mary (RIGHT wth their dog) on their way up the pullover.
Joan, described as “everyone’s best aunt” worked at the railway station & then as a school bursar but she came into her own as a Sunday School teacher. She took the smaller ones while Jack Parkinson the Rector taught the older ones.
******************** In our last TIDINGS we printed a poem by Jean Broady recollecting the Carnival of 2019 in which she had taken the part of the Carnival Queen Mother. It is so sad in this issue to have to report her death.
Joan was in the first of the Trusthorpe pantomimes : ….the 73rd “Little Red Riding Hood” is on this half term!
Jean had delighted so many people in her lifetime, especially with her poems: but at least we might say she went out in glory… riding through our streets [ABOVE]
with such enthusiasm & dignity.
A Little Love Scene captured at the Mablethorpe Seal Sanctuary & Wild Life Rescue Centre on February 10th…. Just in time for the photo to be circulated on St Valentine’s Day!
The Mayor, Deputy Mayor & Town Clerk with members of the Town Council gathering at the commemorative rock (near the Skateboard Park)
on the anniversary of the East Coast Flood: January 31st This was the initiative of Janet Shields, the widow of Bud:
the first anniversary since the death of her husband for whom the Flood was such a life-changing moment.
From 31st March the Boatshed will be formally transferred to the group currently meeting in the Old Toilet Block opposite the Loewen Cinema: The Men’s Shed…. one of 500 such groups throughout the UK. community hubs where both men & women learn new skills & form friendships.
£17,986 from Ørsted's East Coast Community Fund plus £4,796 from the Big Local Coastal Community Challenge will facilitate crucial major works on the building including new windows, extensive brickwork repair, a new boiler system & decoration throughout.
The Boatshed began its life as just that, the shed that the lifeboat was housed in. It was built & opened in September 1900. Since then it has weathered 2 wars & the Flood of 1953, seeing Mablethorpe grow from a small rural village into today’s loved resort.
The Shed is open Monday to Saturday 9am to noon. For further info contact

THE BOATSHED BECOMES A MEN’S SHED
THANK YOU To all who took part in the GOOD NEIGHBOUR PROJECT SURVEY: Really heartening! We now have a full committee & enough volunteers to allow help to be offered when the project is up & running, hopefully this Easter. Interestingly there were more who were offering help than who were saying they needed help (the right way round for a good launch…!) & more men than women responding ! ~ Canon Chris 440 039
DOWN MEMORY LANE
…. Or should we say “Down Mablethorpe High Street?”
Mel Bloss has shared this photo of his Dad some time before 1962.
The elephant was made with a engine to drive it so he could give rides to children up the and down promenade! Does any one remember it?
And this one [RIGHT] came from Alison Freame when she was doing a clear out. Taken on Sherwood Field after a Knock Out session as part of a Carnival Week some time in the 1990s, this was the Lifeguard Team who took part (“AND WON!” Alison adds.) “Neil Herbert was the Captain (hiding or whispering sweet nothings in Miss Lincolnshire's ear) Dawn, Mark & me. Richard this right hand end but can't remember anymore names.
Barbara Hall, though, could: “Alison Brookes nee Burgess on the end think. That was the year I was a Judge & Natty Lord blacked my eye with a baton those were the days!”
◀ And here’s a more recent
memory from Bobby Baldwin… You remember those high winds we experienced in the February of 2020???
Alison Freame herself is in the middle & it was quickly noted that the photo has caught her with a
nice pint in her hand.
Please drop in any photos you would like to share
(old or new or mucked about with}
to the Coastal Centre or e-mail them to
ONCE UPON A TIME…
Mablethorpe Library is unveiling a new touchscreen collection of over 5000 images of the surrounding area.
Using equipment purchased through a Big Local Lottery Grant, members of Sutton Railway Group have scanned & indexed the collection of local photographs held at Mablethorpe Library & would like to welcome the public to view the launch of the new system on Thursday 27th February at 2pm at Mablethorpe Library.
Library Manager Kathryn Gowling writes “We are delighted that our comprehensive collection of local history photographs & slides will now be much more accessible to library users”.
If you would like to view the collection or contribute your own memorabilia to it
please contact Mablethorpe Library, 01522 782 010 or e-mail [email protected]
2 0 2 0 marks the 50th anniversary
of October 3rd 1970 the day we last saw a train in Mablethorpe after the implementation of the Report by Dr Richard Beeching. We were told we might have a hovercraft service linking us with Skegness… & that in any case the future was in road transport. Well the hovercraft idea did not take off…. & although we now no longer run into cows blocking the roads four times a day going to & fro at milking times
there are still the tractors to overtake on our very bendy roads. It can take two hours for us to get out of the county by car, while the line between Skegness & Nottingham ~ with only two coaches & a single line that too often makes for delays & cancellations ~ can be horrendous at peak periods. So not much to celebrate you might say!??!!
But ELR50 has been planned as a family friendly festival celebrating the Railway Heritage
of East Lincolnshire. The first public event will be at Poplar Farm in Sutton-on-Sea the week-end of 4th & 5th July. There will be an exhibition at Bateman’s Brewery throughout the summer holidays, & then, after various other events along our coast, the Festival will close in Mablethorpe, hopefully with a visit from the steam locomotive the Princess Mary Rose. ELDC has given permission for the use of the car park next to the Co-op & application is being made for an event to be staged on this site building up to the actual anniversary of Saturday October 3rd…. a feast for those who are nostalgic about the good old days of rail travel… & it will be an education on the huge impact the railway had on our resort!
