Ohio BRN Highlighted at State Board Meeting

The Ohio Business Resource Network (OBRN) held a panel discussion at the Workforce West Virginia quarterly board meeting on April 17, 2019 in Charleston, WV. WorkForce West Virginia is the state

agency funded through the U.S. Department of Labor that oversees the state unemployment insurance program as well as a network of workforce development boards and services designed to provide West Virginia's citizens and employers the opportunity to compete in today’s competitive global economy.

Two years ago, OBRN staff began to meet with workforce development boards from northern West Virginia and southwestern Pennsylvania to consider expansion of BRN across state lines, particularly to help those companies that operate in the shared economy of the Ohio River. Five Pennsylvania workforce boards and two West Virginia boards have agreed to adopt the program in their regions

Serving on the panel were Matt Falter, OBRN Project Director, Jim Denova, Vice President, Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation, Rosemary Guida, Executive Director, Northern Panhandle Workforce Development Board, Wheeling WV and Janelle Comstock, Program Director, Mid-Ohio Valley Workforce Development Board, Parkersburg, WV. Much of the presentation focused on how the model can help local economic development professionals partner more closely with local workforce development boards to implement a regional business service delivery strategy, demonstrating an ability to meet employer needs. The discussion also focused on the OBRN expansion currently underway in the Northern Panhandle and Mid-Ohio Valley regions and how private philanthropic organizations can be utilized across state lines for replicating best practices and innovative projects related to workforce and economic development.

A key part of the BRN interstate strategy is to help businesses seek new markets and business contracts. The tristate BRN teams will work closely with regional manufacturing extension partnerships, which, under Appalachian Regional Commission funding, are mapping new suppliers and clients for manufacturing firms that traditionally relied on the coal industry. The BRN also supports the Tristate Shale Coalition’s efforts to grow the energy related manufacturing sector in the region.

Local Staff Attend Ohio Workforce Leadership Forum

Stark Tuscarawas Workforce Development Board staff Jennifer Meek Eells and Dan Sipe, along with OhioMeansJobs Stark and Tuscarawas Counties staff JoAnn Breedlove and Amy Miller, participated in

the Ohio Workforce Leadership Forum on April 25th and 26th. The Ohio Workforce Association sponsored the event, in collaboration with the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, Office of Workforce Development. Lynn Bajorek and Beth Brinley, consultants from Maher and Maher, facilitated the two-day discussion, with support from Carol Wargo, a state-contracted trainer with OWD.

Workforce Board Directors were encouraged to bring key workforce staff to the event to discuss challenges and opportunities in Ohio’s workforce, including assisting with the opioid crisis, and looking at performance as a driver in planning and decision-making in workforce programs. The event was held at Mohican State Park and was well-attended. Maher and Maher will prepare a report from the discussions to assist workforce efforts statewide moving into Program Year 2019 that begins July 1st.

VITA Celebrates Their Best Season Yet for Tax Returns

United Way of Greater Stark County’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program celebrated their best tax season ever on April 26 with a celebration that included recognition of volunteers and an

awards presentation.

In 2019, United Way of Greater Stark County’s VITA program and its volunteers helped income tax clients in local communities collect over $3.6 million in tax credits and refunds. 106 local volunteers donated 2,685.4 hours of their time and helped complete 5,385 Federal and State returns so far. Tax returns will continue to be processed through October due to extensions and amendments.

“Every year, our VITA volunteers bring more money back into the community, which stimulates the local economy,” says Tami Stephens, VITA Site Coordinator for United Way of Greater Stark County. “The average tax return costs $200, so we are helping them save there but we are also helping them keep their hard-earned money through their refund and valuable tax credits, like EITC and ACTC. Because our volunteers receive specialized training from the Internal Revenue Service, they often find tax credits that may be overlooked by other tax assistance programs. This tax season, VITA volunteers identified tax credits equaling $1,356,487.”

VITA also hosted two successful “Take Your Taxes for a Ride” drive-thru tax filing events on February 23 and March 30. Drive-thru events allow more flexibility for people with busy schedules. Tax payers dropped off their tax information without leaving their vehicles. Returns were processed with 48 hours.

Voted one of the top 3 tax services in Stark County in the Canton Repository’s Readers’ Choice Awards for several years in a row, United Way of Greater Stark County’s VITA program was recently named the #1 Ohio Benefit Bank Tax Site in Ohio for tax season 2019. This designation is based upon the number of tax returns filed and amount of refunds received by taxpayers.

“VITA plays an important part in the community,” says United Way of Greater Stark County President and CEO Maria Heege. “This program gives many taxpayers back a significant portion of their annual income. VITA offers our neighbors an opportunity to build a solid financial foundation for the future. The program also connects clients to our Financial Prosperity Center, which focuses on additional services available to help clients achieve financial independence. The center offers workshops in financial education and career readiness, plus budget coaching, credit counseling, benefits application assistance, auto car repairs and more – all services that benefit financial health and stability.”
