Success Story - Marlena Herrera

On October 3, 2019 Marlena Herrera lost her job. She had filed for unemployment benefits and needed to get assistance any way that she could, which brought her into OhioMeansJobs Stark County. She

attended several workshops during the weeks of October 14th and October 21st, including “How to Ace an Interview” and our special event workshop “Job Search Technology: You’ve Got Questions, We’ve Got Answers!” After completing the workshops, she used the resources in the resource room to assist with editing her resume, applying for jobs, and got advice from resource room staff. She eventually got an interview and used what she learned in the “How to Ace an Interview” workshop. It paid off!

On November 4th, Marlena came into the center for two purposes. Her first purpose was to complete online forms for a job that she had been offered. The second purpose was to thank Melissa McKissick, the Resource Room Specialist that had facilitated the“How to Ace an Interview” workshop. Marlena stated that she learned so many valuable skills for job searching and interviewing during the workshop.

Marlena says “Because of what I learned here with Melissa, I applied it to my interview and almost immediately, they called and offered me the job!! “ She believes that what she learned in the workshop helped her prepare for an interview, which led her to being well dressed and confident. Marlena will be working at A. Schulman as a Chemical Mixer/Blender starting off at $16.25 an hour. She is very positive and feels that all of the struggles that have come about since losing her job are ending. She is very thankful for OhioMeansJobs.

Local Staff Attend Ohio Economic Development Association’s Economic Development and Workforce Summit

STWDB Executive Director Jennifer Meek Eells, Workforce Initiative Association Chief Operating Officer JoAnn Breedlove, and Business Resource Network Manager Matt Falter attended the Ohio Economic

Development Association’s Economic Development and Workforce Summit in Dublin, Ohio on October 7th. “Much of the discussion and presentations at the summit tied in nicely to what we’re accomplishing through Strengthening Stark,” said Director Meek Eells. “Efforts to outreach to businesses and share with them opportunities to utilize programs like Tech Cred through the Office of Workforce Transformation are key in upskilling existing workforce, so that companies can then hire in new talent to backfill entry level openings over time. Whenever there’s an expansion or an attraction opportunity for a company, availability of a skilled workforce is a top question asked by the company.”

The one-day summit featured insight from: The Ohio Economic Development Association, The Governor's Office of Workforce Transformation, JobsOhio, The Fund for our Economic Future, The Federal Reserve Board of Cleveland, Ohio’s Community Colleges, and The Ohio Manufacturers Association. John Trott, workforce board director for Area 7, and Lisa Patt-McDaniel, workforce board director for Area 11, participated in two panel discussions and shared their perspectives on how talent and workforce development go hand-in-hand with economic development.

Job Seekers Tackle Technology at Workshop Event

On Tuesday, the 22nd of October, OhioMeansJobs Stark and Tuscarawas Counties hosted a special workshop event titled “Job Search Technology: You’ve Got Questions, We’ve Got Answers!” The

workshop was designed for job seekers to learn different aspects of technology that have become part of a job search.

The day kicked off with a presentation on three areas of technology that have become integrated into job search: job search security, mobile apps and applicant tracking systems (ATS). OhioMeansJobs facilitators C’Erra Wingo, in Stark County, and Shannon McClay, in Tuscarawas County, taught the attendees the importance of recognizing red flags during an electronic job search, how an ATS works and how to increase the chances of their resume moving to the next level, and how to use mobile apps to do a job search.

Immediately following the presentation, the workshop attendees were joined by employers who utilize ATS as part of their hiring process for a networking lunch and panel discussion. Each employer shared how they utilized ATS and discussed what they do and do not want to see in a resume. Employers also took questions from the group regarding ATS, their hiring expectations, and what they wanted job seekers to know when applying for jobs.

The employer panel participating in Stark County included Tony Roe and Taylor McCartney from Pioneer 360, Kristen Miday from Aultman Health Foundation, and Chastity Baker and Crytal Guilliiams from Caring Senior Services of Canton. In Tuscarawas County, the panel included Carey Moore from Gradall Industries, James West from Pioneer-360, Chad Keyser from Advance Auto Parts, Cali Salazar from Resource MFG, and Danielle Thomas from Randstad.

Tech Tips - Microsoft Excel and Outlook

This month’s Tech Tips look at two Microsoft Office tools, Excel and Outlook. These tips are from the web-site, How to Geek, which provides a wealth of helpful tips.

How to Cross Reference Cells Between Excel Spreadsheets By Alan Murray

In Microsoft Excel, it’s a common task to refer to cells on other worksheets or even in different Excel files. Cross reference a cell range, format data as a table, and use VLookup for dynamic references. At first, this can seem a little daunting and confusing, but once you understand how it works, it’s not so hard.

What Are Notes in Outlook and How Do You Use Them? By Rob Woodgate

Microsoft Outlook lets you create electronic sticky notes that you can display either in Outlook or right on your desktop, letting you get all those real sticky notes off your desk.
