Members Explore Issues & Options with Government RepsRecognizing the impact which government imposes on business, Chamber members meet often with local public officials. Two sessions held in April illustrate the mutual interest in the economy which business and government share.

The Public Affairs Council (PAC) hosted a candid, constructive discussion with Assemblyman Phil Palmesano (R-132nd) on April 10. The conversation focused on business related components of the State budget, as well as a variety of other issues on the Albany agenda.

The group praised some budget developments, such as the tax cuts for manufacturers and the phase out of the 18A utility surcharge. Some progress was made toward eventual eradication of the Gap Elimination Adjustment, but the punitive impact on local budgets is still severe.

Among other topics discussed were saving Monterey Shock, implementing Common Core, funding highway improvements and storing liquefied natural gas.

A particular highlight of the meeting was the Assemblyman’s report on his effort to move the Assembly to a more productive and less stringently partisan body. A delegation of four Downstate Democrats meets informally with Mr. Palmesano and other Upstate Republicans like Chris Friend (R-124th). They host reciprocal visits and tours of their districts and discuss relevant issues with constituent groups from each other’s community. Mr. Palmesano believes that rapport will pay dividends for all New Yorkers in years to come. The Chamber agrees.

On April 21st, three Town Supervisors met informally with the Chamber’s Board of Directors. Ed Fairbrother of Big Flats, George Richter of Chemung and David Sullivan of Elmira gave overviews of their communities and the array of issues which they have in common, as well as some significant items which distinguish each town as unique.

The purpose of the session was to enable board members to recognize the diversity of attributes and challenges which characterize each of the 17 municipalities in Chemung County. “There’s obviously a lot more to Chemung County than just the neighborhoods where each of us lives and works,” said Chamber Chair Jan van den Blink (The Hilliard Corporation). “This was enlightening.”

No one who has worked with the new Elmira Jackals and First Arena was surprised when the National Hockey League’s Buffalo Sabres announced a long-term partnership with the locals. The alliance, which also includes the AHL’s Rochester Americans, promises collaboration on coaching, administration, promotions and especially player development.

“Now it’s our job as a community to show the Jackals and the Sabres that we’re behind them,” said County Executive Tom Santulli. “This opportunity is huge,” he said.

The Chamber agrees and has already engaged in discussions regarding how best to promote both teams here in Chemung County. Members are invited to share ideas and suggestions by sending an email to [email protected].

Harris Hill to Host Schweizer Anniversary Event

This year will mark the 75th anniversary of the Schweizer Aircraft Corporation and it seems only fitting that there will be plenty of celebrating at Harris Hill, the birthplace of soaring in America! For well over half a century, the Elmira-based firm was the single largest glider manufacturer in the U.S. and today its sport gliders remain the most numerous American-made gliders still flying in the western hemisphere. The National Soaring Museum (NSM) and Harris Hill Soaring Corp. will commemorate the anniversary with a Schweizer Homecoming weekend from June 26-28 that will include a banquet honoring the family, a picnic and, of course, “plenty of fun flying”! For more information, call NSM at 607-734-3128 or go to www.soaringmuseum.org.

Journalists Tour Twain Country

Two travel bloggers left with plenty to write about last month after wrapping up a week-long media tour through Finger Lakes Wine Country! The tour was a joint initiative by the Chemung County Chamber, the Steuben County Conference & Visitors Bureau and the Watkins Glen Area Chamber and was designed to generate media coverage and further brand the region as an appealing and pet-friendly destination.

Kenin and Lauren Bassart of TheConstantRambler.com travel across the U.S. and Canada with their dog, Zoe, to cover dog-loving destinations offering plenty of art & culture experiences and outdoor adventure. As a result of their trip to Finger Lakes Wine Country, they will create a comprehensive digital guide on road tripping in the region, along with several feature stories on various attractions, restaurants and accommodations that link back to the guide. In addition, they will produce a Finger Lakes travel map on Pinterest.

During their time in Chemung County, the Bassarts toured Harris Hill and the National Soaring Museum, paddled on the Chemung River with Southern Tier Kayak Tours, hiked the Twain Trail at Tanglewood Nature Center, visited the Mark Twain sites, and sampled craft beers at Birdland Brewing Co. and Splitrock Brew Pub. A Finger Lakes-themed picnic dinner was provided by Wegmans and meals were hosted by Turtle Leaf Cafe and Splitrock. Candlewood Suites donated overnight accommodations.

Twain Exhibit Opens at Cowles Hall

The thousands of visitors stopping at the Mark Twain Study at Elmira College this season will find an enhanced experience with the premier opening of the Mark Twain Exhibit in its new campus location at historic Cowles Hall.

According to Dr. Barbara Snedecor, Director at the Center for Mark Twain Studies, the relocation of the Mark Twain Exhibit immediately next to the Mark Twain Study will provide a more seamless and convenient way to tell the story of Samuel Clemens and his legacy in Elmira. As Snedecor explained, “Visitors will be encouraged to begin their visit at the Study and then follow the directional signs to Cowles Hall for a guided tour of the Exhibit, located in the building’s north wing.” She further explained that the Exhibit gives a glimpse into the author’s private life and consists of antiques from the Langdon Mansion and Quarry Farm, family images portrayed in both media & photographs, and a bookstore. Staff from the Center for Mark Twain Studies will also be on hand to guide visitors and answer questions.

Both the Mark Twain Study and Exhibit will be open for the 2014 season on Tuesday through Saturday, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. beginning on May 1st and continuing through Labor Day weekend. For more information, call the Elmira College Center for Mark Twain Studies at 607-735-1941.

the spectacular views on the Mark Twain Trail.

Raising Dough for Kids Provides Gift to Support Chemung ARC

Chemung ARC announces that a gift was received, in the amount of $300, from Pizza Hut’s Raising Dough for Kids. These funds will be used to purchase an indoor bocce ball court as part of the agency’s recreation program.

Chemung ARC’s recreation program creates recreation, socialization and leisure opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. People with intellectual and developmental disabilities living in the community are very often socially isolated and lack the social skills to pursue a life with meaningful relationships. Chemung ARC’s recreation program provides people with the opportunity to experience social interaction in an environment with professional oversight where these skills can be taught. People who lack these opportunities often find themselves increasingly socially isolated and secluded as their social skills deteriorate. Activities include bowling, swimming, dances, Special Olympics and occasional day trips.

“So many area youths will benefit from these grants and we owe it all to our hard working and committed employees and the generosity of our guests,” said Jessica Woodburn, Marketing Manager for Hospitality Restaurant Group, Inc.

In 2002, the locally owned and operated Hospitality West, LLC, d/b/a Pizza Hut, formed Raising Dough for Kids, a non-profit (501-C3) organization to raise monies for Western New York children’s charities. Since 2002, Pizza Hut restaurants have raised and donated over $717,000 to Buffalo, Jamestown and Elmira area charities and that amount continues to grow.

HUNT Honored with ACEC AwardAlready honored on several fronts for its design excellence, the Alternative School for Math and Science (ASMS) in Corning recently earned a significant award for its engineering innovations.

The project, designed by Hunt Engineers, Architects & Land Surveyors, PC (HUNT) was recognized by the American Council of Engineering Companies New York (ACECNY) with a Diamond Award in the category of Building/Technology Systems.

Representatives from Corning Inc. and HUNT were honored at the black-tie ACEC New York Engineering Excellence Gala on March 29, at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City.

The award from ACEC New York – one of just four awarded statewide in the category and 26 total projects throughout the state – follows recognition for HUNT’s design by the American Institute of Architects (AIA), with a Design Excellence Award from the Southern New York Chapter of AIA and a Design Excellence Award in the category of Interior Design/Environment from AIA Rochester earlier this year. With the ACECNY Diamond Award the ASMS project is automatically entered in the national competition for Design Excellence.

Additionally, HUNT has received a Silver Award for Design and Installation from the Central New York Chapter of the American Concrete Institute for the ASMS project. The project also received a LEED Silver designation from the U.S. Green Building Council.

HUNT is a professional consulting firm with offices in Horseheads, Rochester, and Towanda, Pennsylvania, offering compre-hensive engineering, architectural and surveying services to municipal, commercial, and educational clients. More information is available at www.Hunt-eas.com.

Holiday Inn Earns Prestigious Awards

In January of this year, the New York State Hospitality & Tourism Association (NYSHTA) presented Stars of the Industry awards to Mark Catron, Maintenance Employee at the Holiday Inn Elmira Riverview (2014 Outstanding Lodging Employee of the Year award - 150 Rooms or Less); Shelly Marshall, Breakfast Room, Meeting and Banquet Manager at the Holiday Inn Express Horseheads (2014 Outstanding Manager of the Year award -150 Rooms or Less); and Holiday Inn Express Horseheads/Holiday Inn Elmira (2014 Community Service Award). NYSHTA then submits their award winners to the American Hotel and Lodging Association (AH&LA) for national judging.

Allen Fusco, District Director for both the Holiday Inn Elmira and Holiday Inn Express Horseheads, is pleased to announce that AH&LA has awarded, on the National Level, Catron with Outstanding Lodging Employee of the Year, Small Property; Marshall with Outstanding Manager of the Year, Small Property; and the Holiday Inn Express Horseheads/Holiday Inn Elmira with the Outstanding Community Service in the Small Property category.

Catron and Marshall have worked for the hotels for a combined 50+ years. Their commitment to customer service, their hotels, fellow employees and attention to detail shows in everything they do. “Our company is very fortunate to have these great individuals working for us,” Fusco said. “We are very proud of them in receiving these well-deserved awards.” He also said, “Our staff is committed to helping others within the community by organizing and participating in fundraising events. They are thankful to receive such recognition, but are even more grateful that they can help their community.”

Restaurants Invited to Participate in Taste NY

Chefs and restaurant owners are invited to sign the Pride of New York pledge to increase use of New York grown and produced products in their establishments. Those who take the pledge will be listed on the Taste NY website, which gives customers the opportunity to identify and give patronage to a restaurant knowing that it supports local food and beverage purveyors.

The Pride of New York pledge, originally announced by Governor Cuomo in 2013, includes promising to do the following: increase sourcing of New York grown and produced products towards a 10% goal of total procurement; feature, promote and increase New York wines, beers, spirits and ciders on wine lists and drink menus towards a 10% goal of beverage sales; communicate commitment to New York foods and beverages with suppliers; educate and maintain staff knowledge about New York’s locally grown and produced products; highlight seasonal ingredients by featuring food dishes and drink items as daily or weekly specials; note, whenever possible, the name(s) of the farm(s)/company(ies) that are featured on the menu; and promote taking the pledge and display any associated signage and materials related to the program whenever possible.

2013-2014 Leadership Chemung

The Leadership Chemung Class of 2013-2014 recently completed presentations highlighting their volunteer projects for a variety of community organizations.

Kurt Bartenstein (Empower Federal Credit Union), Michael Castellano (The Hilliard Corporation), Christopher Coletta (Chemung Canal Trust Company) and Chris Walters (The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes) created a computer lab with 10 PC’s and monitors for the YWCA Elmira & the Twin Tiers. They worked with CyberDark Computing to create the lab and secured grants from Empower, Chemung Canal, Hilliard, and a mini-grant from The Community Foundation of Elmira-Corning & the Finger Lakes to fund software and equipment for the computers. The lab will be used to assist women who are re-entering the workforce and for educational purposes for children who utilize the YWCA.

Jennifer Fulton (Mengel, Metzger, Barr & Co., LLP), Lynzie Nelson (First Heritage Federal Credit Union) and Matthew Sharpe (Cameron Manufacturing & Design, Inc.) partnered with Chemung County Habitat for Humanity to aid them with the development of a short- and long-term fundraising plan; the group plans to continue to meet with Habitat for Humanity’s Board to discuss specific options they can take moving forward.

Craig Harvey (The Hilliard Corporation), Lori Richardson (Swan & Sons-Morss Company, Inc.), Jennifer Sczepanski (Chemung Canal Trust Company) and Dianne Watson (Glove House, Inc.) worked with the Southside Community Center. They reached out to community contacts and their employers to ask for donations of shelves for storage, carpeting, furniture, tables, folding chairs and a small storage shed that were needed by the center, many of which were received and are currently being utilized.

William Kasian (Capabilities Inc.), Don Miller (Five Star Bank), Ed Steinhauer (Realty USA) and Kelly Stewart (Stewart Agency, Inc.) chose the Chemung County Humane Society & SPCA. Initiatives by group members included creating, building and donating a cat scratching post and tower that can be sanitized and used by many cats; helping with the “Catstravaganza!” event in February; doing community outreach to help individuals learn more about the SPCA; and raising $500 in monetary donations, which the SPCA will use to purchase a privacy net to surround the outdoor exercise play yard and alleviate anxiety for dogs that occurs when other dogs walk past the yard.

Leadership Chemung Commencement will be held on Thursday, May 1st at the Elmira Country Club. For more information about the program, please contact Julie McInerny by calling the Chamber at 734-5137 or e-mailing [email protected].
