50th Anniversary: You Did Us Proud!

In April, KSPS officially marked its half century of being on the air but the celebration doesn’t end there! There are events and milestones planned throughout our 50th year, so the party has just begun.

In the last issue of Prevue, we encouraged you to share your memories and anniversary greetings — and you did not disappoint! Here is just a tiny sampling of your kind words to mark the occasion:

• Congratulations on 50 years! Thank you for the hours of great entertainment…And thank you for all the shows that broaden my knowledge of the world and nature and music and, and and!! — Coeur d’Alene, ID

• I started watching KSPS in the 1970s as soon as our cable company started to carry it. I taped Bob Ross shows for my brother and took them to his farm. He watched 2-3 shows and disappeared to the basement. About an hour later he had done his first wet on wet painting. — Edmonton, AB

• Through the years, I’ve watched many quality children’s programs with my daughters, my grandsons and now my great-greadkids. — Spokane, WA

• You make it possible to live a rich life here on the farm. We love Masterpiece, Mystery and the PBS NewsHour, Thank you so much! — Ione, WA

• KSPS programs have taken me out of myself and brought me to tears often, with excellent staging, scripts and acting. We live in a remote area and would not otherwise enjoy professional theater. Happy 50th, KSPS! — Wallowa, OR

• I am a widow living alone and enjoy my TV on all day…keep up the good work and thank you. — Camrose, AB

From the Board…Hello Friend,

A few weeks ago, a friend reminded me that “April showers bring May flowers.” It has been a very gray, wet spring; so the beautiful spring bulbs, flowering bushes and trees bring a smile to my face and make me want to spend all of my time outside working in the yard and garden.

Recently your KSPS Board of Directors spent two of those cold, gray days inside working on updating our Strategic Plan to carry us through the next three years. If you’ve never done this for your business or volunteer organizations you are affiliated with, I’m here to tell you it is hard work. However it is an amazing process that gets the creativity flowing.

One of the first changes we made was to our mission statement. You’ve probably seen the mission statement every month when you open Prevue yet didn’t notice the subtle — but important — change. We added “Public Television” to delineate what KSPS does. It may not seem like much; but, interestingly, people still sometimes confuse KSPS with the “other” Spokane public media: radio.

Our strategic priorities for the next three years include:

1. Building a Foundation for a Sustainable Future. We will grow funding and stay relevant in an ever-changing media environment. Without financial stability we are unable to fulfill the mission.

2. Facilitate Community Conversations. We will continue to be a credible, impartial source for public affairs programming in the communities we serve.

3. Inspire Lifelong Learning. We will be the place that diverse communities turn to for unique educational resources and programming that support their desire for lifelong learning.

Accompanying these initiatives are detailed objectives with timelines as well as the department responsible for execution. Additionally, we created a Vision Statement and a list of core values. The Board will be monitoring the progress towards these goals as a part of their regular board meetings.

As we continue through this beautiful time of year with the increasing hours of daylight and warmer weather, don’t forget to stay tuned for all of your favorite programs; and be sure to participate in the

many special events we have lined up to help us celebrate 50 years of great Public Television.

I look forward to seeing you soon.

All the Best,Pati Dahmen

Chair, Friends of KSPS Board of Directors

Indian Summers: Nespelem Art Colony 1937 – 1940Premieres Thursday, May 11, 7 pm

This brand-new KSPS documentary explores the forming of an art colony by Washington State College (now WSU) at Nespelem, WA, on the reservation of the Colville Confederated Tribes in north-central Washington.

The art colony, founded by WSC professors Worth Griffin and Clyfford Still, created the first extensive visual record of the Native Americans of Eastern Washington; tribes that were thought to be rapidly diminishing in the 1930s. The artists painted warriors and descendants of the Chief Joseph band of Nez Perce, Chief Moses’ Sinkiuse, the Sanpoil, Nespelem, Yakama and Palouse.

The documentary highlights a precise moment in time when the Native people of the Colville reservation and people of the Inland Northwest faced the challenge of dramatic change.

As you may have heard by now, both the President’s proposed budget and a bill in Congress call for the defunding of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB).

CPB provides critical federal funding support for KSPS and hundreds of other Public Television and Radio stations around the country.

The impact of eliminating federal funding for CPB would be devastating for Public Television stations nationwide — including KSPS, where this funding makes up nearly 20 percent of our annual budget. It would severely impact nationally and locally produced programming, and the educational, public safety and other services KSPS and other Public Television stations provide to their communities.

• Think about the people, places and great stories on Northwest Profiles

• Think about our documentaries that chronicle the history of our region – from how it was formed (Sculpted by Floods) to how it developed (Uncharted Territory) to the events and people who made it what it is today(Reflections by the River – Expo ’74, Carl Maxey: A Fighting Life).

• Think about the events that bring us together as a community (FitKids Day, MediaFest)

• And finally, think about the KSPS initiatives to help make us a better community, including Kids Forward and our Emmy-Nominated documentary — Born to Learn — about the importance of Early Childhood Education.

All of these, and more, are made possible with support from you and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

If that goes away, the impact would be especially hard on smaller and rural stations and their communities who rely more heavily on the funds from CPB to continue providing free, quality, over-the-air television and educational programming.

For some examples, the loss of federal funding for CPB (which amounts to about $1.35 per person in the US) could result in fewer programs, including: research-based educational children’s programming from Daniel Tiger to Dinosaur Train; Masterpiece (from Sherlock to Victoria to Poldark;) and other programs we’ve all come to know and love — Antiques Roadshow, Frontline, Nature, Nova, NewsHour, as well as our local productions. The prospect of fewer programs, fewer resources and fewer stations places the entire system at risk.

This is the biggest threat we’ve seen to our funding in recent memory; and it’s up to all of us to make our voices heard to our Members of Congress, who will ultimately decide whether or not to protect funding.

Protect My Public Media (protectmypublicmedia.org) is set up to show your support for KSPS, PBS and all of the other public media impacted by this budget plan. Please go there to find out more about how you can help.

The federal budget process (committee hearings, votes, etc.) could take months but now is a key time to be heard. I’ll do my best to keep you posted as that process continues.

Thank you for your support of KSPS…and please contact me if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

VOLUNTEER TRAINERSHayley LockerbieMary RushMike SimockMarilyn Jones
