Your Permanent Chance of Station (PCS) does not have to be overwhelm-ing if you plan well and do your re-search.

According to the calendar it is almost PCS season, the time between Memo-rial Day and Labor Day when the Mili-tary moves more than one third of their total shipments for the year, which is about 600,000 across all of the branches. So with an even busier PCS season fast approaching, Service Members and their Families will need to get organized, stay focused and most of all remain flexible. Luckily there are some programs in place that can assist Families, whether it is their first or four-teenth PCS.The first priority should a visit to Relo-cation Readiness Office for information on moving and post-move orientations. At Fort Buchanan, we offer assistance with in-transit situations by providing classes on move-related topics and of-fer individual PCS planning also main-tain a loan closet from which Families may borrow basic household goods and small appliances. Office is located in Bldg 390 Crane Loop, suite 101, (DFMWR/ACS) and can be reached at (787) 707-3682, from 7:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday.

To find the relocation office at your new/next duty station, visit www.militaryinstallations.dod.mil and select the installation, then go to “programs and services” and select “Family Center”. Military OneSource also provides on-

line resources through their Relocation Assistance Program

www.militaryonesource.com and live help at (800) 342-9647, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Among topics on renting or buying a home, spouses finding new jobs and the stress of re-locating abroad, Military OneSource offer step-by-step guides to the actual, physical move.To prep your children for the upcoming relocation, parents and kids alike can check out Military Youth on the Move (http://apps.mhf.dod.mil/pls/psgprod/f?p=MYOM). There is also a section for parents to help them handle the stress that their child may be feeling.

The newest resource offered by the DOD is www.move.mil, which was created in an effort to make moving a little bit easier for Military Families and acts as the internet-based gateway for household goods and is called the De-fense Personal Property System (DPS). By signing up for and using the DPS, you can submit your application online, instead of traveling to a Transportation Office, track your shipment, file claims online and receive the full replacement value of lost or damaged goods. Plus you can complete customer satisfaction surveys on the moving company you are assigned.

Lastly, there are a few sites that can help you figure out where you’ll live when you arrive at the new duty station. Your

BAH rate will most likely change, so visit: www.defensetravel.dod.mil/perdiem/bah.html and simply put in the new zip code with your rank to get the appropriate BAH rate. Automated Housing Referral Net-work at www.ahrn.com can help you secure housing off the installation.

Dreams of JoyWritten by: Lisa See

In her beloved New York Times best-sellers Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, Peony in Love, and, most recently, Shanghai Girls, Lisa See has brilliant-ly illuminated the potent bonds of mother love, romantic love, and love of country. Now, in her most powerful novel yet, she returns to these time-less themes, continuing the story of sisters Pearl and May from Shanghai Girls, and Pearl’s strong-willed nineteen-year-old daughter, Joy.

Reeling from newly uncovered family secrets, and anger at her mother and aunt for keeping them from her, Joy runs away to Shanghai in early 1957 to find her birth father—the artist Z.G. Li, with whom both May and Pearl were once in love. Dazzled by him, and blinded by idealism and defiance, Joy throws herself into the New Society of Red China, heedless of the dangers in the communist regime.

Devastated by Joy’s flight and terri-fied for her safety, Pearl is determined to save her daughter, no matter the personal cost. From the crowded city to remote villages, Pearl confronts old demons and almost insurmount-able challenges as she follows Joy, hoping for reconciliation. Yet even as Joy’s and Pearl’s separate journeys converge, one of the most tragic episodes in China’s history threatens their very lives. For details, visit or call the

Are you looking for a little good luck, or perhaps you just want to experience a local tradition? Join us at the Wa-ter Spout on the night of June 23rd. La Noche de San Juan, or Saint John’s Night, is celebrated annually on the night of June 23rd, the eve of the birthday of Saint John the Baptist. Puerto Rico was originally named after Saint John, but a mapmaker’s mistake resulted in a reversal of the names of its largest city and the island itself. In Puer-to Rico, at exactly midnight between June 23rd and 24th, people walk backward into the water and fall backwards into it. This is done three times in a row. The water is said to be “blessed”, so dipping into it is supposed to cleanse you of the bad things and bring good luck or at least help ward off evil throughout the year. Last year this was a very popular event. We suggest buying your tickets in advance to both save a few dollars, and ensure you can participate. Leading up to the midnight tradition we will have a steel drum band to help set the Caribbean party vibe. Food and beverages will also be available for purchase throughout the evening. The party kicks off at 8:00 pm and will go until 1:30 am. Tickets are $5.00 in advance, for Water Spout members and for chil-dren ages 5-12. Adult tickets are $8.00 on the night of the event. For more information call 787- 707-5105.

“Motorcyclists are completely in contact with it all... in the scene. The process and experience of motorcycling forces the rider into the present. The environment of the road engulfs the senses, and the need for constant awareness fills the mind. The total involvement in motorcycling leaves little room for worrying about tomorrow, or second-guess-ing yesterday. Many motorcyclists ride as a way to relieve stress, to “clear the mind.”High speeds on a motorcycle can also be more exhilarating than high speeds in an automobile. This fact creates a greater responsibility for riders on motorcycle maintenance, safety gear and procedures, certifications, registrations, and insur-ance. Just as importantly, the “Bike Culture” requires that the machines look their best! Join us at the Motorcycle Show as an exhibitor or to get first hand information!

Happening at the Community Club & Conference Center

In today’s culinary world there is so much to be desired. The Food Net-work channel has numerous chefs who tout their delicious flavors and recipes around the world. It is hard to make choices, but if you are really in doubt about preparing a special meal and want to impress family and friends then BBQ food should be your choice. There is no gourmet with BBQ food. It is just good old time grilling with your favorite BBQ recipes. BBQ food usually requires outside grilling, but sometimes you can even recreate the flavors indoors with the right season-ings and sauces. But nothing makes a person feel comfort like good old fashioned BBQ food.

Indoors and OutdoorsIf you need some special appetizers with a BBQ flavor there are a couple of very simple recipes that can be used. Take a jar of BBQ sauce and put in a warm fondue pot and cut up hot dogs and drop into the sauce. It is so simple and such a delicious BBQ food to add to any appetizer table. Cooking some small pork ribs with BBQ sauce poured over them in your oven is another simple appetizer idea. There are many BBQ sauces that come in jars with all types of different

smoky flavors. This is the type of sauce you will need for these BBQ food reci-pes. Cooking BBQ on your outside grill is the best way to make your guests swoon. The smell from the BBQ food cooking will probably get to their senses first and they will be ready to dive into whatever it is you are cooking. There are delicious chicken, beef and pork BBQ recipes. The BBQ food recipes do not stop with the meat lovers. Vegetables and pota-toes can be grilled and made into BBQ food as well. Who hasn’t had corn on the cob barbecued on the grill? Shish kabob skewers full of meat, squash, onions, peppers and tomatoes are a big BBQ food favorite. If you are a vegan, all you need to do is lose the meat and you still have a full and filling meal. There are thousands of BBQ sauce recipes for ribs, steak, chicken, brisket and pork. There are major BBQ cook-offs in the south especially in Texas. The best BBQ comes from Texas, whether it is pork, beef or just the sauce itself. When in doubt on what to cook for Sunday dinner just dust off some of mom’s old BBQ food recipes and your palate will not be disappointed. By Jean Reeves

Thinking OfMILITARY MOMS

This year on Mother’s DayWe should think of offspring lostAnd Mothers of all those TroopsWho paid the ultimate cost.

They’ve watched Sons and DaughtersSent off to a foreign landTo fight wars and give their allIn some conflicts so ill planned.

But no matter what the reasonsThey’ve always stepped up to the lineTo give their lives for FreedomsEnjoyed by all of yours and mine.

We must Honor all those MothersOf all those who have ServedAnd Sacrifices that they madeWith our, “Thanks!”, so well deserved.

It takes a very Special LadyTo let Her Child go off to WarOr just to join the MilitaryWith the pride and fear and more.

There’s too many Gold Star MothersAnd if you might know of onePlease send Her a special wishTo praise Her Daughter or Son.

Military Moms are the GreatestWith a strength beyond compareWho hope and pray their loved oneComes Home safe, from over there.

So, let’s keep them in our thoughtsAnd hope their prayers come trueAll those Moms and all those TroopsWho stand Strong and Proud, and True.

This poem was sent out from the Ombudsman for the families of the Sailors on the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower.
