Prayer is powerful because God is powerful. When we pray, we express our dependence on a God without whom we can do nothing. Prayer, then, should be like breathing—unceasing, habitual, and necessary for the very act of living.

Why, then, do we waver in our prayers? Why does it seem like there is time for everything but prayer? I suspect it is because the enemy knows the power of prayer. He knows the power of coming into alignment with the will of God. Take it one step further and consider the power of united prayer among believers. The life-giving power of God flows through His children when they are united in purpose and prayer (see Psalm 133).

Your financial support enables us to accomplish much for the Kingdom of God as we fund various outreaches and programs—but your prayers, your agreement with God’s work here, also help bear the spiritual fruit. Without aligning ourselves with the will of God through prayer, our efforts will accomplish little. At the end of the day, only God can save the lost. Only God can bring the growth.

Leading The Way is bathed in your prayers. We feel it and we know it because we have read your letters telling us about how you pray for us. We pray regularly for you, too. We know that you are united in prayer for the Gospel to be shared with power through our broad-casts around the world, and for that, we cannot thank you enough.

We receive many prayer requests from ministry partners like you—prayers for family members to know Christ, prayers for our nation, or prayers for our listeners around the world. Whatever you find yourself praying for, I hope that this month’s journal will serve as your prayer guide. I know you will be blessed as you pray for God’s will to be done!

In Christ,

When I think of the great prayer warriors of Scripture, I think of Paul, who probably spent as much time on his knees as he did on his feet. I think of

Daniel, whose prayer life enabled him to stand strong in the midst of compromise. And finally, I think of the Lord Jesus, who regularly retreated to be with His Father, knowing that nothing was more important.

When God does something miraculous, you can almost guarantee that somewhere, somebody prayed. In 1948, that someone was one local pastor who followed the leading of the Holy Spirit and urged my mother to go through with her pregnancy. God used that pastor’s prayer, and my mother’s obedience enables me to write to you today.

As I look back at Leading The Way’s history, I see the way God has faithfully answered such prayers for His glory and renown. The growth we have seen at Leading The Way is truly an act of God, whose plan has always been to glorify Himself through our work here.

As you read through this month’s devotionals, I encourage you to pray faith-filled prayers that move mountains for Christ. I pray God would ignite your prayer life and give you an urgency to pray for our nation and world.

Thank you for your prayers. God has brought us this far, and I look forward to seeing where else He takes us!

In Christ,

However, if we are firmly anchored in the Rock of Ages, if we trust in the living God, if we are vigilant in prayer and fellowship with God, our families can stand strong against the enemy’s schemes.

We have a great responsibility to the next generation. They may not yet realize the dangers they are facing or how to pray for protection and guidance, but we know. We can pray big prayers to God on their behalf. We can pray for God to build our homes and our cities on His foundation. We can model for our children how to pray selflessly and ceaselessly to God. We can model for our families that our trust and security are in God, not in our

material possessions or earthly successes. If we fail as adults in praying for and praying with the next generation, they can become spiritually unsure. But if they see us clinging to the promises of God, they can grow up learning to trust in His goodness.

When a generation begins to feel defeated and uncertain, its people begin to lose their spiritual balance. They may

halfheartedly attend church, but inwardly they have lost their biblical moorings. Only God can build a home and guard a city, and that is why we need to call upon the Lord on behalf of the next generation. We need to call upon the Lord for our homes, for our cities, and for our nation.

When we call upon the Lord for the next generation, we can trust that the Lord will work in their lives to cultivate their relationship with Him, to bring them wisdom, to develop their spiritual and intellectual maturity, to strengthen their resolve to walk with Him, to nurture their love of God, and to become powerhouses for Him.

The psalmist describes the next generation as arrows: “Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are sons born in one’s youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their enemies in the gate” (Psalm 127:4, 5). Let’s pray that our children will become arrows into the heart of the enemy. When they face spiritual warfare, when they

and the wonders he has done.”Psalm 78:4

witness the moral decay around them, when they see the enemy’s foothold on our society, may they be like arrows in the hand of the Almighty God to penetrate the enemy territories and to shatter the spiritual deceptions.

How much time do you spend in prayer for the next generation? Even if you do not have children, God wants to hear your prayers for the future of His people. He wants you to model how to live a life of faith and devotion to Him. We need to show the next generation that God

is not a stranger, but He is our Father and our friend and our comforter and our foundation.

If you are struggling in your faith and commitment to daily prayer, pray for the Holy Spirit’s help to strengthen your relationship with Christ. Your walk with Christ can affect the generations to come. Commit today to praying daily for the next generation. Commit to modeling for them a daily fellowship with God. Commit to living the life of faith that you are professing to your children.

You may have heard someone say, “If God knows everything, why then should we pray?” Prayer is the means by which we can commune with God, praise Him, hear from Him, and petition His direction in our lives. God wants to hear us pray. He wants to commune with us more than we want to commune with Him. Why? Because He loves us far more than we will ever be able to love Him. So, to pray rightly is to pray with pure motive. To pray rightly is to pray for God to display His glory and power. To pray rightly is to give God the opportunity to move in our lives. When God’s people pray, God is glorified and we are transformed into the likeness of Christ.

In Matthew 6:9-13, we are privileged to learn from Jesus Himself as to how to assemble our prayer offering:

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

This month, let us learn from the example of Christ Himself as we come boldly before the throne of grace in prayer.

J o u r n a l w e e k1Father, Be Glorified

Perhaps there is no time when the enemy is more active in our lives than during our prayer time. In 1 Peter 5:8, Peter wrote, “Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” Constantly on the move, Satan is always plotting, scheming, planning, and looking for opportunities in which he can weaken us in order to attack. And when it comes to the time of prayer, Satan moves like lightning.

There is nothing that would please our enemy more than to come between the Lord and us in this sacred hour of intimacy. Why? Satan knows that prayer is the secret of our power, our strength, and our victory over him. And if he can cut our power at the source, he will do it in his attempts to weaken us spiritually.

Jesus habitually rose early in the morning and went out to commune with His Father. If the Son of the Living God decided that this was the most important way to start His day, how much more should we? Jesus’ communion with His Father was like the air that He breathed. In fact, He told the disciples in John 4:32, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about.” He was talking about that spiritual feeding He received in communion with the Father through prayer.

Like Jesus, when we pray, we are opening the floodgate of heavenly blessings. To pray is to have power in our lives and to have power in the high places of heaven. To pray is to be spiritually breathing, and if we are spiritually breathing, we are spiritually alive. However, the problem is that many of us have built the foundation of our prayer lives upon bad habits and wrong ideas. But the purpose of prayer is not to inform, persuade, or manipulate God. Prayer is obedience and sincere surrender before the Living God, who sees our hearts.

Jesus’ example of praying in the Lord’s Prayer reveals how important it is that we understand not just how to pray, but what to pray. The Lord’s Prayer is not a magical prayer recipe unlocking the blessings of heaven. Instead, it

reveals the elements that all prayers should include: praise, adoration, petition, and confession.

As in the Lord’s Prayer, the purpose of all purposes in prayer is for God to be glorified. We are not the purpose of prayer—prayer is God’s opportunity to reveal His goodness and power. Prayer is God’s opportunity to be magnified. Listen to what Jesus said to the disciples in John 14:13: “And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified.” That is the purpose clause. That is the purpose of all purposes—that the Father be glorified.

Is the purpose of your prayers to bring glory to God? Rise early and offer the first fruits of your day to the Living God who sees your heart. Praise Him, adore Him, confess before Him, as you seek His glory and honor in your life.

2Our Father in Heaven

Too often, we treat heaven like a house we bought but didn’t move in to, or a trip we planned, but didn’t take—we seldom think about it, nor make any attempt to find out more about our eternal home. We busy ourselves with making more plans for this life, rather than investing in eternity.

In the Word of God, from Genesis to Revelation, the word heaven is used to describe three different realms: the atmospheric realm, the realm of the galaxies, and the heavenly country where God resides. God is in control of all three realms—it is through His power that He is sustaining all three. Yet, as incredible, vast, and transcendent as He is, God lives in the believer’s heart.

Our Father is very much in heaven, and yet He walks with us and He talks with us every single moment of every day. Our Father is in the outer heavenly place, and yet He also comforts us, blesses us, and speaks a word of peace to our troubled hearts. Our Father is holding together the engine that orchestrates the vast galaxies as they rotate, and He keeps them from spinning out of control. Yet, He is closer to us than our hands and feet.

In the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus did not waste a single word. Jesus told His disciples, “When you pray, say, ‘Our Father, who is in Heaven.’” He wanted the disciples to focus on where God is and where we are going. What Jesus was saying was this: Heaven is the home of our heavenly Daddy. It is His native environment, His natural abode. Heaven is His home, which He wants to share with all of those who love His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. Heaven is heaven because our heavenly Father is there, and His government there is supreme. There is no devil, no sinful nature, no world to come against us there.

There is not a single Christian who does not experience on a daily basis the incredible pull of the world, of sin, and of the devil. Every single day, we are tempted to make more plans for this short life rather than making plans for the eternal life. Again and again in the book of Revelation, Jesus said that

J o u r n a l w e e k whatever rewards are in heaven will be given to the faithful—those who stand firm, refusing to compromise, resolving to love God with all their hearts.

Take a moment to reflect on this wonderful prayer the Lord Jesus taught us. Write down your praises, petitions, and confessions before the Lord:

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

J o u r n a l w e e k3Praying the Will of God

From the oldest spiritual veteran to God’s newest son or daughter, all of us have wondered, “How do I know the will of God?” In the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus prayed, “Your will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven.” Many are content to pray those words . . . right up until the will of God clashes with their will.

In this statement of the Lord’s Prayer, the emphasis is on His will, His kingdom, His name. Jesus’ life showed us that the Christian faith is not a list of do’s and don’ts—that is legalism. Jesus’ life showed us that the very essence of the Christian faith is a Person—a Person who has been robed in splendor and majesty from before the foundation of the earth, and yet hung on a cross to die and give His life so that He may save those who believe in Him. This is why the true Christian faith is colliding more and more with a world system that is based upon self-centered needs.

If our own needs become the focus of our lives, they will soon become our god. God knows that if our needs become central in our lives, His glory, honor, majesty, and name will not. The only true fulfillment, the only joy in life, is to know that we are bending our wills to His, living in submission to His authority in our lives.

Jesus’ words, “Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven,” tell us that, as we walk in obedience to the Word of God in our lives, we are bringing heaven to earth. When we are enjoying doing God’s will—not just enduring it—we are experiencing a taste of eternity.

To know the will of God, we must start with Scripture. In order to obey God’s Word, we must pray for the Holy Spirit’s guidance throughout every part of our day. Seeking godly counsel and requesting prayer from trusted friends opens us up to hearing God through someone else and can help us to discern God’s will for our lives.

As we pray and seek God’s will, we must wait patiently and expectantly

“This is the confidence we have in approaching God:that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.”

– 1 John 5:14

for the opening or closing of opportunities. Open your eyes and examine the workings of God regarding what things He is closing off to you and what things He is opening to you.

Often, when we seek the Lord’s will, it may seem that God is silent—but His delay is not denial. During the wait, God is working out His purposes in our lives, shaping us into the likeness of Jesus. Just as a potter shapes the clay, God shapes each of us to be more like Him.

If you are living for yourself today, you can pray, Lord God, I want to live for You. Lord, I want to submit my will to Yours. Lord, I want that joy; I want that contentment; I want to know that I am at the very center Your will.

God may have delayed some answers to prayers that He laid on your heart—but do not give up. His delay is not His denial. At the eleventh hour, when it seemed that all hope was lost for the disciples, Christ returned from the grave. It seemed almost too late, but He came. He always comes.

J o u r n a l w e e k4Delivered from the Evil One

Jesus’ words were not random when He gave the disciples His model for prayer in Matthew 6. His prayers were logical and sequential petitions which ended with His last prayer: “Deliver us from the evil one.”

As the chief angel in heaven, Lucifer thought he could take God’s rightful throne. It was pride that turned the chief angel into the chief devil. It was pride that took him out of the courts of heaven and put him into the pit of hell. And it is pride that he is always trying to replicate in us.

This particular petition has to do with our wills. Satan’s original sin was the sin of pride, and pride attacks the will. We can memorize Scripture and read it for hours on end, but if it is not permeating our minds and changing our hearts—aligning our wills with the will of God—then our efforts are fruitless.

The death and the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ did not only deliver us from the penalty of sin, which is eternal torment, but it delivered us from the power of sin in our lives. Whenever we feel that we are unable to overcome the power of sin in our lives, it is because we are not asking for God’s power by faith; we do not want God’s power to work in us completely; or we have believed Satan’s lie—that we cannot have power over sin.

In order to be victorious in Jesus, we must choose to walk in the freedom He has given us. Paul said that our old self was crucified on the Cross of Christ, “that we should no longer be slaves to sin—because anyone who has died has been set free from sin” (Romans 6:6). Our prayer is then, “Lord, You have delivered me from the evil one eternally—now deliver me daily.”

The reason we pray with confidence, “Deliver us from the evil one,” is because Jesus is interceding on our behalf. Read Hebrews 7:24: “Because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood.” Scripture is saying that the Lord Jesus Christ is able, for all time, to save those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for us. He is making

“Let us then approach God’s throne of grace withconfidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace

to help us in our time of need.” – Hebrews 4:16

J o u r n a l w e e k4 intercession for us right now. So when we are under the gun and cry out for God to deliver us from evil, we can be sure that He has not only heard us, but He has answered us.

If the Holy Spirit is speaking to you, whatever you do, do not shrug Him off. If you have been oblivious to the sin of pride, let your prayer be: Heavenly Father, to You my heart is open and all my desires are known. Cleanse the thoughts of my heart by Your Holy Spirit, that I may perfectly love You. And Lord, that I would magnify Your holy name. I pray that I would not be ashamed, but that I would proclaim Your name boldly. You alone are worthy to receive glory, honor, majesty, dominion, and power forever and ever.

One year ago this month, Leading The Way hosted its largest on-the-ground outreach in Indonesia, the most populous Muslim-majority nation in the world. After three nights of worship, ministry, and powerful teaching

by Dr. Michael Youssef, nearly a thousand people had placed their faith in Christ.

“There are so many who need to continue to hear the Gospel, and that is why this revival is just the beginning of the work God is going to do through

REPORT

On May 24, 2013, the impact of Leading The Way to Revival was evident. Nearly 300 people came forward to accept Christ at Istora Stadium in Jakarta, Indonesia. After hearing about the passionate, sacrificial love of Christ, some could not help but express how God had touched them:

“This is a message that can change my family.”

“No one has ever told me about this Jesus.Tonight was something I’ve never experienced.”

Leading The Way in Indonesia,” Dr. Youssef said after the event. “Leading The Way will continue to expand our Gospel work in Indonesia through radio, television, THE KINGDOM SAT, and solar-powered Navigators to reach the lost and equip even more believers to passionately proclaim the uncompromising Truth of Christ.”

A New MilestoneOne year later, God is using Leading The Way to continue the momentum. On March 1st, we launched THE KINGDOM SAT Indonesia—a significant milestone in our outreach to the nation. We are now able to reach millions more as we broad-cast the Truth of Christ subtitled in Indonesia’s own language.

At 10 a.m. in Jakarta on launch day, Leading The Way Indonesia board members and supporters gathered to celebrate the milestone. After the launch,

Beng Yeoh, Leading The Way’s Vice President of Asia-Pacific, shared the significance of the new translation project with the rest of our team:

“Today marks a big step forward in the Lord’s mission to reach Indonesian people. It is an important step forward in a journey of partnership between Leading The Way with Dr. Michael Youssef and our Indonesian brothers and sisters, for which we thank God and them.”

“This program has opened my eyes”Leading The Way’s outreach to Indonesia has also expanded through distribution of Navigators, solar-powered devices equipped with the Word of God and Biblical teachings. As we make plans

to distribute thousands more, we are encouraged by the testimonies we have already received from Navigator recipients in Indonesia:

1Pray for those who made decisions for Christ at the event in May 2013. Pray that they would continue to grow spiritually, stand firm in the Truth, and share their faith in a predominantly Muslim society.

“Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fear-lessly make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains” (Ephesians 6:19-20).

Lord, fill these new believers with courage and discernment as they minister to those around them.

2 Pray for God’s blessings over the local church in Indonesia. Pray for God to strengthen the Body of Christ in the midst of opposition and hostility.

“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. . . . And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved” (Acts 2:42, 47).

Lord, strengthen and grow the Body of Christ in Indonesia as they continue in their faith.

REPORT

“The Navigator tells me so much about Jesus. . . . Through this NavigatorI understand God’s heart. It has strengthened my faith.”

“I feel the change in me just by listening to the Navigator.”

“This program has opened my eyes, and I am so blessed by it. Please keep this program running because we believe that it will change many lives.”

What God accomplished in Jakarta in May 2013 was only the beginning. As we continue to reach out to the people of Indonesia, we know that God will faithfully and abundantly pour out more of His love and Truth.

This month, to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the Indonesia revival event and our new milestone through THE KINGDOM SAT, join us in praying through the following prayer requests and Scriptures for Indonesia.

3Pray for all those who will be tuning in to THE KINGDOM SAT Indonesia for the first time. Pray that God would touch multitudes more with His Gospel through Leading The Way programming.

“But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it. This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown” (Matthew 13:23).

Lord Jesus, open their hearts to Your Word so that they will accept Your Truth and walk in the light.

4Pray for our teams as they continue to invest in this huge undertaking. The Indonesia team has just begun translating and subtitling over 1,000 English and Arabic programs. Pray for perseverance in this mighty work.

Thank you for your prayers. May the harvest continue to be plentiful in Indonesia!

Why Give to Leading The Way?

There are many reasons why people make charitable contributions and give to certain organizations. Some give to offset tax liabilities; others may fund a charitable gift annuity for the lifetime income; and others may be influenced by friends or family in their giving decisions. Some may give simply out of a sense of duty.

But we believe the overwhelming reason people prayerfully give to Leading The Way is because of what the ministry does. For many, giving is their way of saying “amen” to what God is doing here. Their giving recognizes and affirms the vital work of the ministry.

Donors who look ahead and make planned gifts certainly have this view in mind, as they want to invest in the long-term vision of the organization. Planned gifts can be made during a person’s lifetime or deferred until much later, and they usually involve legal documents and estate resources. This kind of long-term giving requires intentional thought, detailed preparation, and considerable prayer.

Before making any gift, we urge you to get to know our organization thoroughly. You can do this through our website at www.LeadingTheWay.org, where you will find updates on our domestic and global outreach efforts and exciting testimonies

Hudson Taylor had one burning passion—to reach the millions in China who had never heard of Christ. In his lifetime, he distributed the Word of God to thousands, adopted Chinese culture as his own, and ultimately

became one of the most influential missionaries in China’s history. His story began with a simple act of prayer. In 1849, the young Hudson Taylor was perusing his father’s library looking for

something to read when he picked up a gospel tract. Unenthused by the idea of reading a sermon, but enticed by the idea that there might be a good story somewhere in the pages, he read through the pamphlet. As Hudson read through the tract, the reality of the Gospel began to sweep over him. Filled with joyful conviction, he gave his life to Christ.

Overwhelmed by the joy of his salvation, Hudson eagerly awaited his mother’s return home from an out-of-town visit. Upon her arrival home, Hudson met his mother at the door, excited to share his good news—but it was as if she already knew what had transpired. “I know, my boy,” she said. “I have been rejoicing for a fort-night in the glad tidings you have to tell me.”

Seventy miles away on the same day Hudson had stumbled upon the booklet in his father’s library, Taylor’s mother had experienced an intense yearning to pray for her son’s salvation. Resolved to pray until her prayers were fulfilled, she retreated to her room and locked the door. Hours later, she felt the peace of God come over her and assure her that her prayers had been answered.

Hudson Taylor’s impact on missions in East Asia is immense and immeasurable—and it all began with his mother’s relentless prayers before God.

This month, we celebrate one of the greatest blessings a child can receive—the prayers of a godly mother. Happy Mother’s Day! Your prayers can change the course of history.
