Henrob Self-Pierce Riveting (HSPR) Technology Henrob is the global leader in self-pierce riveting production and equipment services. As more manufacturers look towards weight-saving, self-pierce rivets are being used more. This is due to the move towards lighter materials such as aluminum and mixed metal joining applications.

Henrob Self-Pierce Riveting (HSPR) is a cold joining process used to fasten two or more sheets of material by driving a rivet through the top sheet(s) and upsetting the rivet, under the influence of a die into the lower sheet, without piercing it.

The Curtain is Coming Down The end of my second stint as Chairman of the AWS

Detroit Section is fast approaching, and as I suspected,it’s been a lot tougher than the first time back in 1993.First, there’s a lot more to do; and second, I’m a lot older!

So much to do; so little time. But the help andassistance of the many members of the AWS ExecutiveCommittee gets the job done. So this is a big THANKYOU to the Committee and to the many active membersof the Section. Keep up the good work.

Quiz The Experts…Our April Technical

Meeting was held April14th at Tony M’s inLansing, Michigan.Feature of the eveningwas our annual AWSSection 11 “Quiz TheExperts” contest. Thisevent is a great night offriendly competitionbetween District 11professionals. This“Expert” competitionhas been renewedannually for years.AWS sections fromDetroit, Ferris StateUniversity (studentsection), West Michigan, and Central Michigan attended this year’s event.The event was moderated and MC’d by Jeff Carney. Jeff is an AssociateProfessor in the Welding Engineering Technology Department of Ferris StateUniversity. The AWS-Detroit section team represented by Ashley Webel,Nate Miller and Wes Doneth pushed the contest into overtime but cameup just short against a talented group from the Central Michigan section.However, there’s always next year!

“Ask the Welding Engineer” column will return in the Fall 2014 to answer all of your welding questions!

Golightly VoTech ProjectJeffry Hill, Detroit AWS Section Education Chairman

Ray Roberts and I have been working with Golightly Vocational School in Detroit this past school year. I have been elected Chairman for their Weld Advisory Committee which Ray is also a part of. Our AWS Detroit Section has helped the school with welding supplies and has been working on changes along with Juan Whiting, the welding instructor. We have discussed the possibility of setting up a robot training station and maybe looking at S.E.N.S.E. Alex Pazkowski, SkillsUSA winner, has agreed to speak there. We are trying to get local manufacturers to employ some co-op students or summer interns. You can contact Pat Bell at patricia.bell@detroitk12.org.

One important thing we have done is to set up an AWS Student Chapter at Golightly; it may be the first ever within the city of Detroit. As an advisor to the chapter, I will continue to work with the students to make this chapter self-sustaining as they move forward. I have just finished with the school’s Career Day event, and it was well received by both the students and the faculty. I am proud to say that these are some of the best students that I have had the pleasure to work with and look forward to continued support of the school and its welding program.

Sheet Metal Weld Conference XVI & Hands-on Workshop

The 16th AWS Detroit Section Sheet Metal Weld Conference will be Oct. 22-24, 2014 at the Schoolcraft College VisTaTech Center in Livonia, MI. We have had a really good response to the Call for Papers. Thank you to all who have submitted abstracts. The Technical Committee is busy selecting and organizing the papers. 74th Annual AWS-Detroit SectionLadies Night Event

April 12, 2014 was a wonderful spring evening forthe Ladies Night gala at the beautiful Detroit MGMGrand.

This annual event has been an important activityfor the AWS Detroit Section for 74 years and affordsa unique opportunity for the welding community tocome together and celebrate the achievements of ourindustry. Most importantly, funds raised from theevening gala are used to support the AWS-DetroitSection Scholarship program. Since its inception, theDetroit Section of the AWS has contributed well over$750,000 to scholarships for students pursuing acareer in welding.

First Vice Chairman of the AWS-Detroit Section DanWellman acted as Host and MC. He was joined byDennis Harwig, Vice President Technology & BusinessDevelopment for AWS-National in Miami and 530other like-minded welding professionals that allowedthe section to add over $10,000 to its scholarship fund.

The evening’s dinner was enhanced by a lusciousdesert, various entertainment and dancing as wellas conversation amongst friends, colleagues andpeers in the industry. Hello Clint, tell us a little bitabout yourself.

Hello, I’m Clint LeaTrea andI am an Engineer/ProjectEngineer for Viking Products,Inc. out of Grand Rapids,Michigan.

What do you enjoy about your position at Viking Products? My job offers me exposure to a vast array of different

manufacturing processes. Cold forming, stamping, resistancewelding, MIG welding, tube bending, threading, (I havebecome an expert on threads) and a lot of different materialsas well. This is great, because I love learning and it is somethingnew all the time. I wouldn’t say I dislike any part, but it is mostlya desk job and I am a hands- on guy.

Clint, tell us why you joined AWS Detroit?I joined AWS to gain more knowledge in welding, and

welding processes. That’s great, because a good part of the AWS is to “educate”

and keep “educating” the welding industry in its various formsand fields.

Do you have a favorite event that AWS or the AWSDetroit section sponsors?

Fabtech! There is so much energy, great people and cooltechnology. 2013 was my first time going. I also took the RWMAclass, which was very cool.

Well, now that we know a little about the professional“Clint,” tell us a little about what you do with yourdowntime.

I have always enjoyed theoutdoors, photography, andworking with my hands. Istarted welding/fabricating mysenior year at MichiganTechnologicalUniversity for anengine poweredbicycle project; soonafter I purchasedmy own welder.Since then, I have enjoyed a couple of fullmotorcycle builds and countless projects of myown and others I have helped with.

I recently started trying to build functional“art” from repurposed metal. I have some coolfurniture ideas. So far, I have made just a fewcoat racks. Mostly, I like to fix things that arebroken.

I really enjoy riding my motorcycle. Some ofmy most memorable moments have been onthese long motorcycle rides. One in particularwas a 1500 mile trip around Lake Michigan.

I also enjoy spending time with my fiancée,Jessica.

Who would you consider to be amentor in your life?

Mr. Richard Hudson, weldinginstructor at Muskegon CommunityCollege was my first weldingmentor. He was a tough cookie.If it wasn’t perfect, he let youknow. I’d like to think that I getand give something in everyinteraction, mentor or not.
