Recently while overseas, our family had the privilege of meeting a brave convert from Saudi Arabia. Her story began at the age of five with dreams and visions of a man, Jesus, visiting her and telling her that He was watching over her and would never leave her.

In her heart, Anna knew this was Jesus, but her Muslim parents had tried to convince her that these dreams were coming from an evil spirit. She was desperate to know more about what the Bible said about Jesus. She even tried searching the Internet from Saudi Arabia, but the content was blocked. It wasn’t until she was in her 20s and was able to flee to Europe that she came to know Jesus as revealed in the Scriptures.

One day, Anna walked into a Leading The Way partner church in England where she was plugged into a Bible study and baptized six months later. Once Anna knew Jesus through His Word, she said something I will never forget: “The feeling of sadness and emptiness that I used to feel is now filled with something else—great happiness, peace, and love, the love of Jesus our Savior.”

We hear incredible stories like Anna’s every week. A Muslim has a vision of Jesus, and through our media efforts in the region and personal follow-up, they come to know the living God and love Him. This is the point of every dollar we spend, every hour we work, and every prayer we pray here—to love the One who first loved us and to see God awaken that Truth in others. There is no greater calling than that.

Thank you for your continued support and prayers as we continue to proclaim Christ as Lord to more Annas in every corner of the world. Let us never lose our awe of Christ and all He has done for us.

The greatest calling we could ever have as Christians is to know and love Jesus Christ. In other words, our greatest calling is not to be a missionary, to

pastor a large church, or to raise a family—it’s simply to know and love God! Yet, how many of us lose sight of our primary calling because we prioritize other roles and responsibilities over our first love?

Paul had a grocery list of incredible religious accomplishments, but he declared that they were rubbish compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus. My prayer is that we would have the same heart cry today.

Loving Jesus intimately is one of the most important things we can focus on as the world competes for our passion and attention, resulting in a diluted faith. Whether your relationship with Christ is vibrant and healthy, or whether your love for Him has grown cold—I pray that God would use these devotionals and this series, To Know Jesus Is to Love Him, to challenge your love for Christ and transform you deeply.

At no point do we ever arrive at a destination in our love for Christ. Loving God is a journey that will never end, because even in eternity we will be forever worshiping, knowing, and loving Him. So today, as God begins to push the boundaries and limits you have in loving Him, I hope you will answer His call with a resounding “yes!”

these words as the ship passed by his daughters’ ocean grave:

When peace like a river,attendeth my way,

When sorrows like sea billows roll;Whatever my lot,

Thou hast taught me to say,It is well, it is well, with my soul.

After four years of utter despair, having lost nearly everything, Spafford bravely worshiped God. His words now constitute one of the most well-known hymns in history.

The Bible teaches that God is near to those who praise Him. He knows the deepest concerns of our hearts (Psalm 139). Praise melts our hearts so that we are no longer hardened by sin or disappointment. And while God never requires our praise, He certainly desires it. But what is it about praise and thanksgiving that brings the Lord and the believer so close together?

Praise re-establishes God’s reign over our hearts.

Praise is often difficult because it is an invitation for God to have authority in

your life. Turning the authority of your life over to Him means not having to worry about your future. With God as your loving King, you will be able to stand on His promises ( Jeremiah 29:11).

Praise reveals the true spiritual condition of our hearts and molds us into His image.

When praising God, what do you say? Your words are important because they reveal what is in your heart (Matthew 12:34). Your praise reveals the places in your life where God is working and how much you really believe in

Him. Through praise, God opens your heart so that you will know and trust Him more deeply.

Praise refocuses our hearts so we can see God’s plan for the future.

In this life, you will face trials and troubles ( John 16:33). If you focus solely on your problems, eventually you will believe that disappointment is your destiny. However, Jesus has overcome every evil obstacle, and He is your hope. If you focus on God’s power, love, and glory, you will realize that redemption and victory are possible in Christ.

Praise fortifies our relationship with God.

Praise reminds you that God loves you with an everlasting love. Praise helps you recall that you are not alone. By expressing your adoration and thanksgiving to Him, you not only accept His love, you also learn how to reciprocate the love He gives to you (Revelation 5:12).

In Psalm 100, the psalmist instructs us to “Shout for joy to the Lord. . . . Worship the Lord with gladness; come before Him with joyful songs. . . . Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations” (Psalm 100:1-2, 4-5).

What is the ultimate reason for our praise? Verse 5 provides a clear answer: “For the Lord is good.” We praise God because He is worthy of all worship,

no matter what we are experiencing or how we are feeling. As a result of God’s immense generosity, praise then puts us in the position to receive His blessings.

Through praise, God prepares us to worship Him completely—mind, body, and soul. When we behold the worthiness of God in praise, it’s hard to leave unchanged. When we praise Him fully, His greatness overcomes the hopelessness of our situation. When we exalt His name, we experience the depths of His love. That is why Paul admonishes us to “rejoice in the Lord always” (Philippians 4:4).

Do you want to love God extravagantly? Do you want to trust Him more than you ever have before? Begin to worship God for His faithfulness. Exalt Him for His love. Thank Him for His nearness in trouble. Praise Him for His overcoming power. Let nothing hold you back from giving Him all your worship.

Would you describe your relationship with Jesus as vibrant and growing, or as a lifeless religion? Regardless of where you are along the spiritual spectrum, the journey to loving Jesus more deeply and intimately begins with a dissatisfaction with your current state of loving Him.

When you want to love Jesus more deeply, you will seek more of Him, more of what He loves, and more of what pleases Him. However, in seeking Christ more fully, you will experience spiritual resistance. Allow God to turn these obstacles into stepping stones, and He will lead you to greater depths of faith, intimacy, and spiritual maturity.

This month, you will be challenged as you read about how to know Jesus and love Him more deeply and intimately. You will discover what a powerful tool the mind is in loving Jesus, and you will learn how remembering Jesus’ faithfulness leads to loving and trusting Him more. We pray our Lord Jesus leads you to a new level of love and intimacy as you seek Him through this month’s devotionals.

Is it possible to love someone and still neglect that person? Can you love someone only for what you get out of that person? Can you truly love someone without wanting to know everything about that person?

There are lots of people who say they are followers of Jesus, but they are far from obeying Him. In Isaiah 29, God says, “These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me” (Isaiah 29:13). It’s easy to talk the talk of Christianity without walking the walk of intimacy and obedience. Is your love for Christ all-encompassing, or is it safe and convenient?

Maybe you’re wondering: “Why is it so important to love Jesus more deeply, intimately, and uniquely? I received Jesus as the Savior of my life, I made my profession of faith a long time ago, and I’m fine.” Just as wedding vows are only the beginning of a marriage, so a profession of faith is only the beginning of something much greater: a daily, living relationship with Christ.

The Apostle Paul was a religious man, zealous for his religion. But after a life-changing encounter with Christ, Paul’s desire to grow in love for Jesus caused him to regard all of his accomplishments as trash. In Philippians 3:8, after going through his list of religious accomplishments, Paul boldly states, “Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish.”

Loving Jesus begins with a dissatisfaction with your current level of loving Jesus. A love for Jesus starts with a yearning to know Him and love Him more than anyone or anything in life. This love leaves no room for complacency or mediocrity, because Christ is always worthy of more.

When you come to the point of saying, “Lord, my love for You is so pathetic, so shallow, so superficial, and so self-centered,” this is when you have taken the

first step in the right direction.Jesus longs to nourish our minds with the Truth. He longs to fill our hearts

with His love. He longs to lift our imagination into new heights. He longs for us to surrender our will so that He may fill us with His. But it all begins with dissatisfaction.

As your love for Jesus grows deeper and higher and more intimate, even the heavy and crushing circumstances and experiences in life will become light for you. Why? Because you know that on the other side of life, when you get home, you will see the face of the beloved Jesus. When your intimacy with Jesus is all-encompassing, all of the suffering along the journey will not compare with His beautiful face that you will see on the other side.

You can start today. And even if you’ve already started, you can always go deeper. There is no end to loving Jesus, and we will keep on growing in His love until we see Him face to face. Hold nothing back today as you seek to know and love Christ with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength.

2Loving Jesus in Spite of Obstacles

If we are honest with ourselves, whenever we see the rocks and the bumps along the way of our Christian walk, few of us really see them as stepping stones. The fact is, if we want to grow in intimacy with Jesus, we will encounter obstacles and difficulties along the way. We will face barriers and derailments along the way. We will meet distractions and encounter temptations for detours and diversions. However, the question is, will these obstacles detract us from our love for Jesus and growing in intimacy with Him, or will we see them as stepping stones for climbing higher and growing deeper in Christ?

In pursuing a deeper love and intimacy with Jesus, there are three things that stifle our relationship with Him: the inability to accept correction, the unwillingness to change, and the temptation of confusing the journey for the destination.

Let’s look at the first type of obstacle: the inability to accept correction. Few of us have the discernment to recognize our own prideful nature. We all like to imagine ourselves the way we want to be rather than the way we really are. So when a godly person points out some of the blind spots in our lives, how do we react? Our reaction to them is an indication of the level of our love for Jesus. Our willingness to accept correction from a loving Christian brother or sister is one of the greatest indications that we are growing in our love for Jesus.

Secondly, to love the Lord Jesus with all of our hearts, we have to be willing to grow and change. Some people detest change. Some people are afraid of change. Some people want to cling to the past. Some would rather live comfortably than obey Jesus no matter the cost—but as believers, shouldn’t our middle names be change and growth? For that is the nature of sanctification.

In our efforts to love Jesus more intimately every day, we must realize that whatever heights we’ve attained, there is more. Whatever level of growth we have reached, there is always further to go in our love for Christ. The day we

J o u r n a l w e e k stop changing and growing is a day of immense spiritual danger.Finally, the third obstacle to loving Jesus more intimately every day is

confusing the journey for the destination. We either see ourselves as citizens of this world with a passing interest in heaven, or we see ourselves as only passing through this strange land on our way to our final destination. Loving Jesus intimately means that we are keeping our eyes on our destination, and yet serving Him here and now while waiting with all of our hearts, all of our minds, and all of our lives.

As you think about the obstacles in your way to loving Jesus more intimately, pray: “Lord, help me to accept correction. Help me to accept growth and development and change in my life. Lord, help me not to confuse the journey for the destination. Help me to examine my life and recognize where I have fallen out of love for You. Help me to repent and begin to grow in loving You every day. Father, I pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.”

In Matthew 22:37-39, Jesus spoke about loving the Lord with all your mind: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment.”

Why is the mind so important? The mind is the seat of the intellect and determination. The mind is the seat of the will and commitment. The mind is the battlefield. When you win the battle in the mind, you have won the hardest part of the battle.

If you want to grow in intimacy with Jesus, it has to be a continuous, decisive act of the mind and will. If you leave loving Jesus up to your feelings, moods, or circumstances, which change and fluctuate, your love will always waver. It has to be the priority of your thinking, your decision making, and all of your dreams and longings. It must be the priority of your time, your energy, and even your money.

Maybe you’re recalling a list of priorities that you made once upon a time. Maybe you couldn’t keep up with everything fighting for your attention, for the top spot on your priority list. What if you were to take that list and imagine it as a bicycle wheel, with Jesus as the axle? When Jesus is the axle around whom all the spokes of your priorities revolve, when Jesus is the hub from whom all of your priorities emanate, when Jesus is the very center of your life, all other priorities will fall into place as everything begins to revolve around Him.

When Jesus is at the center of the priority wheel, we will give Him the first fruit of the day—not the rotten, leftover fruit of our time and energy. We will make decisions with His will in mind, rather than starting with the question, “How will this impact me? How will it affect me?”

What do your thoughts revolve around? The center of your thinking—whether Christ, self, or something else—is the object of your worship. Only

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able

to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” – Romans 12:2

as you prioritize His desires over your own will you truly begin to love Jesus with all your mind. As you become more dependent on Christ, the process of submitting your thoughts to Him will become more and more natural and joy-filled.

Ultimately, God cannot take you where you are not willing to go. You will not be able to grow in your love for Jesus if the chains of past wounds or struggles are holding you back. Your mind has to be set free, and only Jesus can set your mind free. You cannot change what happened in the past, but you can place the past under the blood of Jesus, then intentionally decide to love Jesus without holding back. As you partake in this act of worship, aligning your thoughts with His, He will be able to take you to new depths of intimacy with Him.

Throughout Scripture, we see how the Lord is truly offended when His people forget Him—His past mercies, His past graciousness, His past deliverances, and His past supernatural intervention in their lives.

Numerous times, both in the Old Testament and in the New Testament, we see the heart of God and the depth of His disappointment when His people forget about Him and His past mercies, blessings, and grace. In fact, the reason God established all the festivals, feasts, and celebrations, from Yom Kippur to Rosh Hashanah to Passover, was so that the Israelites constantly, physically, with their own eyes, would remember God’s gracious hand that delivered them out of the slavery of Egypt and brought them into the Promised Land. He wanted to provide a visible, tangible reminder of His work. In the New Testament, the reason our Lord Jesus established the Lord’s Supper and baptism was for us to remember His indescribable love toward us.

Why does God want us to remember? God’s desire for us to recall His past mercies has nothing to do with His own personal insecurities, but everything to do with us worshiping Him rightly. Every time you vividly remember the depth of God’s love for you, He is inviting you to love Him back more deeply and more fully. Every time you remember His matchless love, it brings healing and wholeness, challenging you to respond with praise and surrender. Every time you recall to memory His immense sacrifice, it brings hope and trust that He will do it again. Remembering Him is for His glory and for our good.

If you are feeling defeated and discouraged, you have forgotten something vitally important. Go back to the point where your trouble began and ask, “How did I get here?” Re-evaluate your thinking. Is it based on your failures or God’s faithfulness? Look back and instead remember those moments of God’s faithfulness.

“I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I willremember your miracles of long ago.” – Psalm 77:11

J o u r n a l w e e k4 Our past memories are linked to our future hope. So many people are held back from greater growth in Christ because they are held back by those chains from the past. Cut the chains and see new growth in Christ as you focus on His faithfulness rather than your failures.

Because your past memories link you to your future hope, loving Jesus with your memory is of vital importance. When you remember what Jesus has done for you, you will experience a renewal of love for Him. When you love Him with your memories, you will become filled with hope for what He will do, regardless of the present.

Psalm 42 is a great example of how loving the Lord with your memory can fill you with hope, pull you out of the pit of discouragement, and propel you into more fervent faith. Here David declares that only the memory of God’s past faithfulness can lift us up in hope; only the memory of God’s past interventions can deepen our love for Him; and only our memory bank of the Lord’s past blessings can renew our intimacy with Him. Here David presents a problem and a solution: “My soul is downcast within me; therefore I will remember you” (Psalm 42:6 ). Whether you’re in the valley or on the mountaintop, let David’s cry be your prayer.

But something had been weighing on him for a while now. After learning about Christianity on Leading The Way’s satellite channel THE KINGDOM SAT, Salem had questions about the beliefs he had been following for his whole life. He called the channel and eventually spoke with Adel, a member of our follow-up team.

Over time, Adel built a relationship with Salem and continued to answer his questions. Their friendship, which no one in Salem’s life knew about, was a refuge for Salem; nobody could know about the questions he had asked about Islam.

Finally, after many questions, prayers, and hours of study, Salem was ready. After being a devout Muslim for his entire life, leading prayer at the mosque week after week, Salem made the decision to follow Jesus.

No Longer WelcomeWhen Salem’s wife learned of his conversion to Christ, she was outraged and fearful at the thought of her husband’s betrayal. Having no choice, she took the house and their children and kicked him out of their home, and ultimately, their family.

Salem’s family made it clear that he was no longer welcome among them. He could not attend church or any sort of Christian fellowship without endangering his life. Salem became very depressed and even considered suicide. With no support except for the occasional fellowship of Adel, and knowing that his family was still watching him, Salem knew that he had to leave his hometown.

Starting OverAfter learning of Salem’s situation,

Facing southeast toward Mecca, Salem led the mosque in the Muslim call to prayer every week. As a highly-respected member of his community, Salem had been appointed as the imam of the local mosque.

our Help The Persecuted coordinator met with him to discuss how Leading The Way could help. To begin a new life, Salem needed six months’ rent—just $100 a month—and startup funds to open a small supermarket and make a living in another city. Through Help The Persecuted, he was able to begin his new life there.

The Challenge for New ConvertsAlthough it’s one of the most dangerous places to be a Christian, the Muslim world is ripe for harvest. In the last two decades, the rise of technology—access to the Internet, radio, and satellite TV—has opened doors for the Gospel that did not previously exist. With secret churches multiplying in closed countries, mission researchers speculate that up to 7 mil-lion people with a Muslim background

are now Christians. However, many of these Christians—some say up to 90 percent—return to Islam because of the hostility and lack of support they face as new Christians.

“Many broadcast ministries have the idea of answering a letter or an email, but that’s it,” says George, Regional Manager of THE KINGDOM SAT. “To them,

integrating people into churches is not their business—let the churches do it. But that is a very Western mentality. Most people don’t understand that in many areas in the Middle East, churches don’t exist. There is no such thing.”

In an effort to support Christians in closed countries, Leading The Way provides personal ministry through on-the-ground follow-up teams and directly meets the needs of the persecuted. In the last year, Leading The Way has provided much-needed support for thousands of Christians in the form of startup funds for new businesses, rent for families fleeing their countries, medical expenses for torture victims, and food and hygiene kits for Christian refugee families.

Although we cannot prevent persecution from happening, we can support new converts from our broad-

casts by discipling them, connecting them with underground churches, and ministering to their needs. Against all odds, they can experience the strength, hope, and healing that are theirs in Christ.

Repeating Yesterday’s Question

In February 2013 we asked the question, “What is for sure today?” focusing on the current economic climate. Things look very different as I write this column today.

While interest rates are still very low, there are plans to increase them. The stock market has continued to rise despite periodic setbacks. Stock averages have hit new highs this year. Real estate values have risen significantly. And the overall business climate has substantially improved.

So one could again logically ask the same question, namely, “What is for sure today?”

Many in the retirement stage of life are seeking to protect their asset values and are seeking an income source that can answer “yes” to the following questions:

• Is the investment secure?• Is the income stream guaranteed?• Does it have a good rate of return?

One investment vehicle answering “yes” to these questions is the Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA). Leading The Way offers these through its partnership with the National Christian Foundation (NCF). A certain monk announced that he would be preaching a sermon called “The Love of God” to the congregation at the next evening service. That Sunday, the congregation gathered in the dark cathedral, wondering why

the room was so dim. As the starting time approached, the monk entered the front of the cathedral, lit a candle, and carried it to the crucifix on the wall. First, he illuminated the crown of thorns. Next, the two wounded hands. Third, the marks of the spear wound.

The room was blanketed in silence. After a long moment of quiet awe and adoration among the congregants, the monk blew out the candle and left the room. His sermon was over.

There is no greater symbol of God’s love for us than the Cross. Christ’s act on Calvary reminds us just how worthy He is of all our love and worship. As we reflect on the pain and anguish He endured for us, let us respond with total surrender and wholehearted worship.
